Hiya,
I just showed my girlfriend my new Nexus One, and honestly I expected her to love it as much as I did. Anyway, she found the screen exaggeratedly large, and said it didn't fit in her hand. In short, she would have loved a smaller version of it.
She has a Samsung Corby and its smaller screen seems to be enough for her. That made me think, has there been word about making an Android phone with a much smaller screen, and thus a much smaller size? Truth be told, that would save battery which seems to be the main problem with these phones right now.
Do you think such a phone would sell well? Would there be a market niche for it?
I think 3.7 inch is the perfect size. Going higher would make it too big, but going lower would reduce the viewing area too much for my liking.

Sounds like your girlfriend is used to having small things in her hand?
Seriously though, LG do a small phone and it looks great unfortunately the screen resolution and quality are very poor. It could have been really nice.
Samsung makes retarded looking phones. You can't ever expect anyone who likes Samsung to like a different style. And...the learning curve would be too much for her to handle.
Wouldn't a myTouch 3G fill that need perfectly then? I do believe it is a bit smaller than the N1, and it does have a smaller screen at 3.2.
The hero is a great phone. And it's got a small screen, 3.2 inch I think.
Personally I think anything smaller than 3.7 is too small for a smartphone. The iPhone has a wierd screen size ratio to make it seem bigger, but i often found it was too small still.
I haven't tried anything such as the HD2 so 3.7inch is the largest phone i've used so far.
I think 3.9/4 inches would be an ideal size, but ONLY if the battery was above 2000mAh. With a phone that long, the battery wouldn't even protrude much at all.

Yes, it's resistive. But it's a great upgrade from the Corby.
On the other hand though, what isn't?

I've played around quite a bit with the Touch HD2 and I must say I wouldn't buy a phone that big. Sure it's fantastic to have that kind of screen real estate, but as a phone for day to day use, no.

Fair enough... I haven't had a chance to play with anything with a bigger screen than the N1. Interested in trying it out, but I can see your point.
I would gladly rock a 4.3" Android in a heartbeat, cant wait till a few come out, if theres one thing instantly noticible about the Nexus its the massive screen size compared to the G1/MyTouch, I think the HD2 is a great size, just needs a keyboard and android : )
As awesome as the note is what are your thoughts on what screen size you would like to see in the next note? I love big screens so I would go with 6" myself. Your thoughts?

If the overall size and the weight will remain the same as of the present Note I sure wouldn't mind a 6 incher.

6" sounds about right, as long as they can minimize dimension increases by using a smaller bezel. In bed at night when reading ebooks or browsing the web, I hold the phone between my thumb and middle finger, pinching from top to bottom (large hands), and can barely do it with the Note, so don't want any larger height. Also, the weight's about at the limit for tiring my fingers over extended reading periods.
I'd be inclined for it to go somewhat smaller at 5"
and also change the res to 1280x720, cutting 10% off the width.
Are you guys crazy? Here's the size of an 5,7". It's looks so much bigger than 5,3! :0

Huge bezels on that e-reader make a big difference, but on second thought holding my fingers up to my screen making it 6 inches loss pretty big. I think 5.5" is more reasonably possible without increasing outside dimensions too much.
Yeah, ANYTHING bigger than 5'' is too big and will not fit in the pockets, it's pointless.
The BIGGEST size phone I'd buy is 5.5'' as something larger will not fit in my pockets & is therefore useless to me.
I like a device similar to the Note which is a balance between a smart phone & a tablet both in one.
It MUST fit in my pocket. The Note just about fits so people that are happy with a 6'' device will find it difficult fitting it in MOST of their clothes!
I think the Note is physically about as big as you can get before crossing into the Tablet space.
The niche of the Note is pockatable phone tablet.
The line is very narrow.
The Note is probably pushing the limits already. I bet the largest demographic for the Note is men... Because we're comfortable with the size. Most women wont be.

+ 1 It fits in my pocket, but it's tight, and difficult to get out if I'm not standing up. Just a hair smaller would help, but still bigger than the nexus.
I would go 5.5 inches at the most. I am pretty happy with the screen size. I'd love a 5.5 inch version, the same physical size but with smaller Bezels, mated to a quad core CPU, LTE, NFC, and a 4000mah battery. Also, a notification light would rock.

I agree - if it was exact 720p it would be narrower - the LG Nitro HD is only 68 mm wide, barely wider than the Atrix 2.
Anything 70 mm wide or less would be much easier to handle one-handed. The 83 mm width of my Note is quite daunting. I love everything else about it, or I would switch to the Nitro HD. If SG II HD LTE would only come with S-Pen, it would be my dream device ATM.
So screen size of 4.5" to 5", with 1280x720, would be the sweet spot for me!
I am used to the HTC 4.3 phone for about 2 years and switching to Galaxy Note is not problematic for me at all. I love the beautiful screen and the size is also an upgrade and moving toward a small Tablet territory. I like to read and watch video and also surf the net. This size appear quite good for those. I would not mind having a slightly bigger screen up to 6 inches as long as it as thin and remain fairly portable.
This Galaxy Note is so good that it is a mini version of the Tablet. It serves my needs for the time being and remain portable and still function as a phone - 2 very big pluses for this device. I can skip getting a tablet now.
I like big screen & i think this is the biggest it should be for note. If too big, it will be pain in the ass to carry every way..haha..

I worry A LOT about its size because according to the most recent rumors it will have a 5.7" display while even the previously rumored 5.99" one disappointed me...
I think these rumors will turn out to be accurate seeing how Samsung recently made the S4's display slightly bigger than the SIII's while actually making the device itself "SMALLER".
I really hope they will offer at least 2 display sizes: a 6.3" one like the Mega (which I can't buy because of its too low specs ) and a smaller one which I really don't care what it will be...

A mobile phone should be the largest size possible which fits where I have *always* kept/carried my mobile phones/smartphones. 7" tablets are too big but not by much (a couple of years ago I tried the original Galaxy Tab 7" as soon as it came out but returned it), a Mega 6.3" would be more or less the perfect size for me. Eventually we will get there, I know it.
I have *always* wanted something like the Mega 6.3", even when people gawked at the first 4" smartphones or, later on, were saying that 4.3"/4.5" were "just too much"...
I think the market will coalesce around a couple of "standard" sizes: 5" and 6.5" (of course with small bezels, light, thin etc)

I am not interested in one handed operation in the slightest. I have always found "irritating" trying to operate touch screen mobile devices one handed, even when smartphones had less than 4" displays.
Large displays may be "overkill" if you look at it (and use it) as a "mobile phone", I see it (and use it) as a "pocket computer" because, well, it is.

7 inch tablet and 6.5 inch phone may have almost the same screen size but ease of handling and using it is not comparable because in most cases phones have very small bezel while tablets have wide one. As stated before if Note 3 has 6 inch screen and is still not much bigger than Note 2 then there is no problem with handling, it would be even easier than Note 2 to use. All that aside, personally I have used 2 hands approach since I got Note 2, the only gripe I have with it is I can't answer phone with one finger without serious stretching... I think it would not be hard to code answering (or not) mechanism that looks like Pie control in shape but from right or left down corner, or even better when phone is ringing and you touch the screen, then from that point sliding left answers the phone, right denies the call (with sliding directions to be configured as you like).
Forgot to mention I have big hands, so this is why it wouldn't be a problem, unlike someone with average sized hands,

Just been holding the Samsung mega 6.3, it's a great size, kind of thinking if the note 3 is not even 6 it will be quite disappointing, when you hold it in your hands and realise the thinness, it's not a big deal at all, I say 6.3 all the way.

I think it would be noticeable if you were moving, say, from 3.5" to 3.7". From 5.5" to 5.7" I'm not so sure it makes much difference. With the Mega 6.3", Samsung proved that the Note 2 bezel can fit a bigger screen without increasing it's size. I believe 5.7" is doable with the current bezel size and 6" with a minor increase in size. Maybe just a couple of millimeters more in width and height.

I had the S3 and the S4, you definitely can notice the difference between the 2 phones in use. It won't be a HUGE difference from 5.5 to 5.7 but it'll be noticeable. Same with the Galaxy S2, I had the I9100 that had a 4.3 inch display and also had the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 which had a 4.5 inch display. You could definitely tell the difference.
I think 5.7 inches would be perfect in order to keep a decent amount of ppi with a 1080P panel. 6+ inches would be too big, in my opinion

After almost a year of using my ONE, I don't think I'll be able to go back to phones smaller than a 5.5 inch screen. At first when I got my phone, I found it to be too big for my smallish hands but I got used to it quickly. Yea, I was helping someone with their Samsung Galaxy 4 phone and during that whole time I was wishing the screen was bigger .
Android is Always About New Opportunities and I'll always be interested with whatever is to come
I don't think I would want to go bigger than 5.5, it's nice having a big screen but a bit pointless to go to 6", especially for me as I have a 7" tablet. I think anywhere between 5-5.5 is the sweet spot, probably 5.2.
LOL, I know what you mean. Everytime I pickup my GF's S4, I can't believe how small it is. I don't remember it being that small when I was using it. That said, I don't think I'd want to go much bigger than 5.5". Maybe 6", but I'm not sure. That's one of the thinks I love about Android though, there is always someone willing to try something to see how it works in the market so we can push the boundaries and experiment.
Yeah, even My Nexus 4 feels so tiny. I picked up my Nokia E52 from the abyss of my bag and bam, it was microscopic Fascination how technology changes so fast.
Well, i look down at my friends iPhone 4's and ask if it's a toy.
I've got used to it very quickly. After a couple of weeks I've noticed how small my Xperia Z was. Bigger screens are just much better for reading
I love the screen size now. Had a S3 Mini before and it now feels tiny.
Finally i am able to read ebooks properly on my phone!
But i think that the screen size of the Nexus 6 would be my absolute maximum, not bigger than that.
The only thing that i would like to see is some progress in the stock launcher/Google launcher.
As Screens get bigger i think gesturres are even more important. For example Nova/Apex launcher, swipe down on screen and open Notifications.
Why isnt this implemented in stock launcher?
Big screens are addictive, I had an og droid and liked it, then got a galaxy nexus and thought it was the perfect sized screen, then got a droid maxx and thought 5' was actually perfect, now I have a one plus and of course 5.5 is perfect. It's going to be 5.4" to 5.5". It's still a rumored spec, but if you see the hands on video, it's clearly bigger than a GS6, which is 5.1". It's safe to call this thing a phablet. The bigger the better, makes that portrait slide out keyboard that much easier to get onboard with!
