What are the exact dimensions of the screen? For some reason, I haven't found a review site that bothered to use a ruler. As a result, everyone knows the [supposed] diagonal but not the width or height.
Also, if anyone could measure the height of the nav bar buttons, that would help in computing the de facto screen size. See here.
Please note that I'm not looking for diagonal measure, but height and width (though you can include it as well, it's not necessary because of Pythagoras).
H: 5 15/16" or 151mm
W: 3 11/16" or 94mm
Notification bar: 5/32" or 4mm
Nav Bar: 11/32" 9mm
Total Diag: 7"
Going off a screenshot:
Notification bar: = 33px
Nav bar: 75px
So usable content area of 800px x 1172px.

Thank you!
From this we can calculate:
Dimensions: 151mm x 94 mm = 5.94in x 3.70in
Diagonal: 177.9mm = 7.00 inches
Dimensions (not counting nav bar): 142mm x 94mm = 5.59in x 3.70in
Diagonal (not counting nav bar): 170.3mm = 6.70 in
Dimensions (not counting nav or noti bars): 138mm x 94mm = 5.43 in x 3.70 in
Diagonal (not counting nav or noti bars): 167.0mm = 6.58 inches.
[Accuracy to sig figs not guaranteed - because I forgot all that stuff.]
By comparison, the Galaxy Note (full phone, not just the screen) is 145.8mm x 82.95mm = 5.74in x 3.27in, (therefore with 167.7mm = 6.60in diagonal).
So the screen is 1cm wider than the Galaxy Note and about as tall, depending on how you're counting. Full-sized Note can be found here.
Good sign.
This just shows how small the Nexus is T_T
Now that I think about it, I'd prefer if it has no bezel at all...but that's preposterous.
Someone else started another thread on this subject a few hours earlier than this one, please continue all further discussion there.

In playing around with the Today screen background/wallpaper images, I have noticed that the Athena screen pixel count is actually larger than a true VGA screen.
The photos below show the screen on QVGA resolution with a background image sized on my pc to 640x480 pixels:

Now here is the same image running under RealVGA mode:
Note that since Real VGA is running, the Start and Calendar/Contacts bars on the top and bottom of the screen are thinner, and as a result, the background image tiles (starts over) on the bottom.
So the question is, what is the true pixel count of the Athena screen???
The image does not seem to tile horizontally, so I believe the width to be 640 pixels or less(?), but the height is definitely greater than 480 pixels.

Bump:
Another way to re-phrase the question, is there a way to find out how tall the Start bar at the top of the screen is in the registry?
Same goes for bottom of screen bar (Calendar/Contacts)
Thanks
Keith
theoreticly you could try to take a screenshot and measure the pixels?
It's not the pixels
rather, it's the image. WM cuts off and/or shrinks background images before using them as the theme.
In Standard QVGA orientation, the top Start Bar may be 26 Pixels. I have the Batti-2.1 bar in the top of my screen that lets you set the number of pixels height for the battery bar. The square Start button is set to 26x26. If I set the battery bar height to 26, it covers the start bar completely. I haven't loaded Real VGA with this ROM yet but could do so for a test if you are interested.
Thanks for the information.
I also got some answers on the newest Real VGA thread. FWIW, Tobias has the newest version and it is quite mature and it is worth a download:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327830
To sum up menu bar heights:
QVGA/192dpi : 52 pixels ht.
128 dpi: 34 pixels ht.
VGA/96dpi : 26 pixels ht.
(I don't know if those registry values are total height of both bars, or only one bar)
In registry:
You can find it in: HKLM\ControlPanel\SIP\MenuBarHeight WM5(?)
WM6: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SIP\MenuBarHeight
And finally fwiw, I checked, the screenshots that I have in Corel Draw, and Merlin is correct, the image is actually compressed vertically assuming that you have 52 pixel ht. menu bars.
So if you have VGA 640x480 background and run Real VGA on the 96dpi setting, it squeezes the background to make space for the 52 pixel menu bars, but since your menu bars are only 26 pixels, it then tiles the image to make up for lost real estate!
Now if I could only find that shrinking feature in the registry and tame it!!!

yeah !!! and maybe for delete you have to shake the diamond
And use the touch sensititve wheel to draw the pictures!
I agree with Bombzhome, just switch to vertical or horizontal mode, then move your finger around the touch sensitive circle. Also shake to start a new picture is a good idea.
This is a great idea!
That's an amazing idea! I might have a play around
Here's a quick demo I knocked up - enjoy
Use the menu in the bottom left to toggle between Horizontal and Vertical. Use the wheel to draw the line as follows:
Horizontal
Clockwise = Right
Anticlockwise = Left
Vertical
Clockwise = Down
Anticlockwise = Up
The menu on the right is used for clearing the screen and changing the line thickness (I've found thick works best but I guess it depends what you're drawing)...

Thanks a lot for this. A great start! It would be great if you could draw the lines by tilting the device.
All the best

Wouldn't that be cheating and against the "etch a sketch" way..?
My thoughts for an update included things like:
Saving the finished drawing.
Playback to show how, from a clean screen, you drew it.
Ability to load a previously started diagram and continue from where you ended.
Possibly add an option to change the way you draw (i.e. tilt)
Somehow highlight where the current position is
Hi,
For you good FPS fans, here is a QuakeLive wallpaper ported to HTC Desire A8181 dimensions:

Best usage:
- Use your Android desktop manager wallpaper feature (stock launcher, Nova), in "Settings > Display > Wallpaper > *MyDesktopAppChoice* > *ChooseImage* > *CropIt*"
- Crop to "Portrait mode only" or equivalent feature: wallpaper will fully fit your screen width, without having to scroll between desktop pages, and will display not to bad in landscape mode too (full image visible but a little too much zoomed-in/pixellized)
Features:
- Auto-centers in portrait mode, on the latest Android version (greater or equal to 4.4.4)
Specifications:
- Width: 720px
- Height: 800px
- PPI: 96
- Color depth: 24
Original desktop version (1680 x 1050), created by "Elude7":
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j186/mabrison/Quakelive_Wallpaper1_by_Elude7.jpg
Note:
- On Android 2.1, stock wallpaper dimensions are (2 x resolution width, resolution height) = (2 x 480, 800) = (960, 800), 96 ppi, 24 color depth
- On latest Android version (4.4.4 as of now), this doesn't auto-center the wallpaper. It gets auto-center (without cropping I mean) by having wallpaper dimensions of (1.5 x resolution width, resolution height)
*** If you do have a better wallpaper management knowledge with Android, to get a better display in both portrait and landscape modes, with the whole image foreground contents visible in a single page viewport, feel free to post a better version from the original desktop version ***

Hi, I just bought the 7 inch onn tablet (2022 model). I found that the pixels are not in a perfect square shape. Despite the screen resolution being 1024x600, the physical screen window is actually more like 16:9. This screen looks like one of those used in the portable dvd players back in the day, which is the same 1024x600 resolution but maintains a 16:9 aspect ratio. This means each pixel is actually a rectangle shape instead of a square shape. In other words, everything on the screen is actually slimmer than it should be:

Even the official picture/render on Walmart's website looks squashed, just look at the icons:
Now if you don't see anything wrong and/or think I'm crazy, here is a Google image search for a circle shape, note that all circles look squashed, like an oval:
So I tried to change the screen resolution to 1024x576, to trick the system to think this is the resolution and then it would be a proper match for the 16:9 aspect ratio. I used "adb shell wm size" for this. However, after I made the change I found there are black bars on both sides, so basically it only uses 576 pixels instead of 600 pixels, leaving the unused area black, which is not what I wanted:
Then I tried different 16:9 aspect ratios, such as 1280x720, 1366x768 and 1920x1080, and also different densities from 80 to 480. They all have the same black bars on both sides, I also tried the scaling option, but both "auto" and "off" gave me the same result. It seems like the system is stick to the scaling and not willing to stretch the image. I then found the "faded-area" option which should be the "overscan" equivalent for older Androids. But this option does not work at all. Even if I set it to some numbers, it still shows "none" and won't take any effect:
So now I'm stuck here. I wonder if there are ways to change the screen resolution and at the same time stretch the image to full screen. The current/default settings (1024x600) is not looking right, as everything is squashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
