[Q] Is my Nexus 7 linked to the buyer account? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dad bought me a Nexus 7. He doesn't remembers if he checked or not the "link to this account" check box when he bought it while paying from his Google account. How can I make sure it's not linked, or how can I unlink it from his account? I want the $25 on my account, not on his.

When you turn it on, it will ask you to log into the account you want it linked to.

I know that. If I do so the $25 will be given to his account.

Read my answer. The device is not linked to any account until you activate it.

That's not entirely true. There is a checkbox when you order from Google Play that links the device to your account before shipment (meaning, your Google account is already stored in the device, all you have to do is enter your password to confirm)
It just so happens that checkbox (at least for me) was checked automatically as the default setting. So to the OP, it probably remained checked if your dad didn't opt to uncheck it.

Thanks, this is what I meant.
Is there any option to un check it after placing the order?

I don't think anyone really knows the answer to that yet, as none that were ordered from the Play Store have shipped yet.
So it's yet to be seen, although I can't imagine it would be too difficult to select a different user from the device itself after receiving it.

I emailed Googleplay about this as I am in the same position here is what Dan from the google play team said:
Thanks for contacting me, sorry for the delay. You will be able to add your account to the device and you will be able to receive the credit on your account. Your Google Play $25 credit is our gift to you when you have, or add, a valid form of payment to your Google Wallet account.

Well, since you still have to enter a password (only the username is pre-entered), when you first turn it on and asks for your (dad's) password, just press cancel, then put your own account details in instead.

I called about this exact question last week. I was told by 2 different Google CS reps that option is for warranty information and would not be connected to the device. So you could still just log in with your account and then add a payment method to get the 25$ credit. At least this is what I was told, we all know that we probably shouldn't believe what the CS reps say.

WAIT WAIT WAIT that's CANNOT be right - App store question

(Yeah please excuse the subject typo...rage and all)
So I've just come across an interesting problem. With the Froyo update I took the opportunity to change what I'll call the root profile Gmail address from my personal to work (on Google Apps). Alls well until I go to reload my apps which won't because it's under a different Gmail address. Samsung support says "Nope" it won't combine email addresses.
My question is, will Googs allow this? I've got enough invested in apps that I do NOT want to buy them over again and quite effing honestly, SHOULDN'T HAVE TO.
Something else comes to mind (speaking in future tense now)...if I had purchased them through the Amazon Marketplace this wouldn't have been an issue?

Your purchases are registered under one gmail profile...seems pretty straightforward to me. You couldn't buy apps with one Apple ID and download them on another. Why not sign your original gmail back in and then add the other gmail?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
From a developer stand point, I understand why not.
Then I could just register one address with all of my families android devices and they would all have the apps that where only paid for once.
go back to the other email address....
Yeah, just log out and log back into the old gmail account.

I think that is what google does not want to happen, the apps were paid for once from the owner of the purchase. They don't want people adding emails to a google account and giving away paid apps free just by adding emails.
Can't go back to the other address. The phone is for word so I'm using my work address going forward. Meanwhile everything purchased is back with the personal email. Any way to combine them? Quis how do you add another email to your account?

Go to gmail > accounts > add account
You can set either account as your "preferred" account, but you have to have your original gmail account as your main to link the apps you purchased.
I would have to say that i agree with google here. i know it sucks in your situation but you know how many people would take advantage of that. I could buy an app and then let my wife have it on her acct too. like 9kracing said just add both accts to your phone.
Yeah but cmon is that info and warning displayed anywhere?!? I should have the ability to *transfer/move*, not multiple times to multiple accounts but just to another email address. Both are even under the same first name! 1:1 transfer nothing more. As if to say "Hey Google, I'm over here now".
@9kracing: "Go to gmail > accounts > add account" does that work for Google Apps? I'm not seeing that option at all and I've got OPS.

You could forward all work mail to your personal account, and create a filter in gmail to give them a Lable, like "Work" and skip them showing up in your personal inbox.

I looked into this for a long time, simply put, there is no way to swap app purchases from one gmail account to another.
That's really *really* annoying. Thoughts on if using Amazon Appstore gets around this issue?
Why not log into the gmail account that has the purchases and copy them to the sdcard? Then log in as the other account and install them from the sdcard.

I'm a little confused.
When I go to Gmail and hit menu, there is an "accounts" option. Go there. Now at the bottom of the screen, I have a little button that says "add account". I only have 1 gmail so I haven't tried it, but the concept seems pretty simple to me....
Yeah that's simple enough too. Then you can have all your paid apps on your sd card

Well, the apps purchased from the Amazon Appstore is also tied to the account that purchased it, but you can always change the email associated with the account.

Nexus 7 "linked to Google account option" - safe to be resold without opening?

Nexus 7 "linked to Google account option" - safe to be resold without opening?
I got sick of waiting for my Play order N7 to be shipped so I bought one from Tesco Direct... but now the Play order is shipping. Ooops.
When I ordered I selected the option to have it pre-linked to my Google account. Can anyone who also selected this option tell me what the difference was when they first booted up the device?
I want to re-sell my Play N7 as "Brand new in box" but if it would be a security risk to give someone else a device pre-linked to my account then I would have to open it first to reset it.
Does it ask for your account password on first boot? If so, is it possible to ignore this and sign in as a different Google account (and not have any remnants of my Google account remaining after they do this)?
I did find a similar thread here but that was from before anyone had received their order and was just going on the word of CS reps; I wondered if anyone could confirm the situation now that orders have shipped...?

Nothing in theory but...
1) I'm having it sent to work as I live in a flat so it would be a pain to have it sent there during the day.
2) I'm on holiday after tomorrow (hence I was so desperate to get the device before I went away).
3) Our receptionists can be a bit dense so I don't entirely trust them with requests such as refusing delivery for a specific package, i.e. I'll tell them but I'll probably end up with the package when I get back anyway.
4) Now that they've sold out on Play, they are selling on eBay for more than I paid.
Because #3 might end up happening, I want to know whether I can execute #4 successfully

I got a 8GB PS Nexus 7 and sold it to a co-worker but opened it up first to check for defects and what not. If I recall correctly (was in a haze looking at the amazing device ) it does require you to put in your password and also gives the option for another Google account. I skipped it all and booted into the home screen then decided to just factory reset. But if you don't want to open it, I'm lmost 90% sure you should be ok Hope that helps :good:

I can tell you for a fact--I forgot that I selected that option and when it said "Hey, jcracken!" it kinda creeped me out. It actually did say that, I think I also use that name for my Google+ account or something. Anyways, it does ask for your password, and there was a button that said "Not jcracken?"

I ordered mine 1st July so just after the cut-off for receiving last week rather than this week.
I'm wondering if that was the cause of some delays in shipment. Does it come up before you even have a chance to connect WIFI? Means it was done at the factory.

It comes up after you've connected to WiFi.
I'm pretty certain that the Nexus in the box knows nothing about your login id, and it is only when you've connected to the internet that it transmits the serial number or MAC address of the device to Google which in turn allows Google to "pre-populate" the login ID since they presumably maintain a database of which serial/MAC they dispatched to Play store customers.
Regards,
Dave
For ultimate piece of mind change your Google password now that it has shipped, that way if (big if!) for some unknown reason it was shipped enabled with your account + password the account wouldn't be able to purchase anything

Phone number stolen

Hi!
In the past few days, several people have called me claiming I've been texting them about their items on craigslist. I haven't been texting, and the people calling me are from states in the mid-west. It appears that someone took my number and added it to their Google Voice account. When these craigslist people call me, it does the whole, "state your name and we'll try to connect you".
What can I do, aside from getting a new number?
Try to reclaim your number via Google voice
Get (if you don't have one) a Google voice account
Add your number to it
It will say "this number is in use would you like to reclaim it" (or something similar)
Note: the person(s) that had your number added WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL ABOUT THE CHANGE.
You could contact your carrier as well, otherwise this might become a cat and mouse game between you and the other person(s).

I tried adding my number to my Google Voice account, and it gave me the following error:
"This number is already being used on two other Google Voice accounts. Forwarding numbers cannot be shared across more than two accounts."
It didn't give me the option to reclaim it. I have 3 Gmail accounts, and it isn't an any of them.
Thanks!

Locked out of US Play Store

I travel in and out of the US a couple times a year. ATM, I have a US payment method and address, I'm in the US using a T-Mobile SIM. I can't access country-restricted apps, such as Pandora and Hulu. According to MarketHelper (or whatever it was called) I am T-Mobile US. I've called contacted Google, and they've refused support since I'm running a custom ROM (CM nightlies). Hence two questions:
Any ideas about the market issues?
How can I revert to stock and be able to come back to CM easily? I can't make a nandroid because I have 10GB of Google Music.

Google uses a combination of the country your email address was reg in, as well as a few other things to determine what country store your app uses.
That's unfortunate, but how can I force it to reset? I don't even remember what country my email was registered in, but I'm sure in the US now and have been for the last year. I can confirm it's account related because I logged into another account and it works fine.

Only way is to contact google about it and tell the what is going on. They maybe be able to help you but dont hold out to hope.
Yes, they're support is pure garbage. I've been in contact with them but they're really no help.
Try going to Google Play My Account > Settings and confirm the carrier and device is correct. Next, try to install Pandora to the device. If it wont, it tell you why.
As I said previously is T Mobile US and I can't install Pandora. It seems to be an account issue because with a different account on my phone or on the website I can install Pandora

Try installing it from the web site with the same account that does not work on your phone. I may hint as to why it won't install.
When I had my Nexus S in Paris on SFR SIM, I was able to install SFR apps, but not update some US restricted ones, so I believe the market is tied to the SIM card, regardless of where the Google account was created. Other services, like Google Voice would depend on where the account was created (US only).
SIM, payment method, addresses are all US now.
I can't install even from the web (using my account).
With a different account I can install from my phone or web.
From the website it says: "This item cannot be installed in your device's country"

OK, your account still thinks you have a NON US SIM card. Power off, remove the SIM, power on and connect to WiFi. Check the web and see if the carrier clears itself. If you have market enabler installed, remove it, or try a different US carrier.

I can confirm this works, I logged in from my work gmail and it works just fine. It seems like it would be a radical step to switch my Gmail account though. Theres gotta be a better way.
I called again, and this time they had me do something similar but slightly different (and ridiculous if you as me). I went to a paid app that WAS available to me (I randomly chose Minecraft) and I clicked buy (it was showing the wrong currency but I clicked anyhow) and then accepted the permissions, leading me to the next screen, which is a confirmation screen, in which the app will be purchased if you hit buy again but you don't, and you hit back and go back to the app. At this point you exit the Play Store and then (without force stopping it) you clear its data. You open it again, accept the terms and voilá! At least in my case this solved it, for some reason...
I must add that I removed foreign credit cards from google wallet (which according to previous conversations with them should have been a non-issue unless it was selected as default, which it never was), that I had on file but haven't used lately, so maybe that was related and that + a wipe of play store data was needed, I guess I'll never know now...

Has anyone received their $25 Google play credit yet?

I performed all of the steps to register my us wifi 12.2, and went to the website listed on the little slip of paper included with the instruction manual, but I haven't recieved any of my promotional offers yet. Additionally, I sent an email through the samsung site asking for support and haven't heard anything yet. Yes, I did check my spam folder

Got my $25 credit instantly. BTW, thanks to the OP- you just saved me $25! I didn't even know about this, I was all set to just ignore most of the Samsung Apps on the tablet until I read this thread.
All I did was sign in to Samsung Apps, clicked the link to promotions- that sent the email with the $25 Play Store redemption code.
Pasted code in "redeem" in PlayStore and *poof* instant $25 credit.
Got mine as well, just not my Evernote Premium. Seems to have conflicting information about the free year but I suspect that as an existing free user I'm SOL.
Got mines instantly by email.
Yeah after further investigation, it appears that regardless of what you do on the website with regards to registering the device, you need to open and log into the Samsung apps application on the device to trigger the perks email.
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
I received mine before I finished setting up my device....almost instantly.
Registering ad receiving the Perks for my 2014 Note 10.1 was more of a process than my Note Pro 12. Once I opened Samsung Hub n the Pro 12, Instantly got an email with all the perks, which included a redemption code for $25 Play. The Note 10 gave me an extra $50 credit at Samsung Hub and Samsung Apps, which I think spending an additional $250 for the Pro 12 should have entitled me to the same. The key to perks is to make SUREto register for "Samsung Account", and check the email with such account. If you don't create the Samsung Account and login from Pro 12 you WILL NOT get the perks NOR the free premium Wacom Office Suite that automatically downloads as an update once registered. Hope this helps!
Can you explain? Which ap do you run to trigger the perks email ? If a browser which browser (I hope not chrome because I already reset chrome's bookmarks) ?

My theory would be for those who already owned a Samsung device and had a Samsung account, during setup you are prompted to create or sign in to your existing Samsung account. When I signed into my existing samsung account and Google account and when everything began syncing during first time setup I had a email in my email account associated with Samsung. As a matter of fact I do recall surfing the net while updates were being applied to pre installed apps via the built in samsung browser and it took me to Samsung's website as though it was already bookmarked in the app. I can't quote the actual verbiage on the page, but it eluded to a "thank you for registering your device". I really didn't pay attention to it, although I did receive my perks email shortly thereafter.
I believe this is where it auto registers your device with no effort on your part. Being that the browser is connected to your Samsung account.
Never the less, I know for a fact I didn't purposely register my device like the standard way of inputting serial numbers etc., thus adding a device to your Samsung account.
On a side note....is it normal that you can't stack the dropbox 50gb promo on top of an already existing 50gb promo? I had purchased a Samsung device last year, can't recall if it was the note 3 or 10.1-2014, and I received 50gb. However it didn't add the note pro 50gb promo when I setup my dropbox account on the note pro. Now when I created a new dropbox account and linked it to the note pro I received the 50gb. Now I have 2 separate dropbox accounts with 50gb.

Just open-up "Samsung Apps" from new device then Menu/Settings/Account and make sure it shows your email. Then you should be able to open your Gmail with the Gmail app and look in "Promotions" folder and there should be a "Thanks For Registering" from Samsung. They only register and send perks to Google Mail addresses (@Gmail).

Anyone who hasn't gotten their 1 year in evernote try opening evernote in pen window. I did that and it popped up for me. Also apply for the evernote beta in google+ they have handwriting support
