Hi, I've been reading alot for the past month trying to decide between Defy and Defy+, and cant help it to start a thread where it will be said all in one place.
I've been told that Defy+ has additional ROM space where u can put your apps or a secondary ROM so they can work faster, and that the regular Defy can't do that, but here in a thread somebody said that they have the same ROM size and that there is no difference, also the fact that Motorola states it in the Defy+ documentation that the device is having additional 1GB ROM confuses me additionaly.
So the main question is: Is there any difference between Defy and Defy+ other than the camera module and the CPU frequency(i know the CPU is the same but differently clocked)?
DEFY-MB525

DEFY+ (MB526)
Lens- Red
CPU- same as DEFY ocd to 1ghz
OS- 2.3 ( Some come with BL7)
Battery - 1700mAh

Difference b/w Defy+ and green-lensed Defy (speaking of HW differences) - camera module and battery
Difference b/w Defy+ and red-lensed Defy (speaking of HW differences) - battery
That's it! Everything else is SW differences.
Defy™ MB525
Processor: 800mhz TI OMAP 3610
Camera module: soc (green lens) or bayer (red lens)
Battery: 1500 mAh BF5X
Defy™+ MB526:
Processor: 1000mhz TI OMAP 3620-1000
Camera module: only bayer (red lens)
Battery: 1650 mAh HF5X
The processors are basically the same, and are fully compatible with each other.
Ok, so the thing on GSM Arena stating that the Defy+ has additional 1GB ROM is false?

Absolutely. So a normal defy user can use a gb kernel and buy a defy+ battery, no one would know the difference. Except pt maybe the colour of the battery door lever and usb port cover etc...
But the thing is green lens (soc camera module) doesn't work with a gb kernel, only red lens (Bayer camera module) works with gb. Froyo kernel otoh works with both modules. So an soc module user would have to give up the camera. Not ideal. If that wasn't the case, everyone could have upgraded to the gb kernel and avoided all this defy rom, defy+ rom, froyo and gb kernel issues.

If you can find them at the same or close enough price, then go for a DEFY+, because the larger capacity battery does make a difference.
My 2 cents
(2 DEFY+ in the house )
Thank you all for the info :good:, it helped alot to finaly get things sorted out. I got confused by all those different posts.
One other thing that bothers me is that i see a couple of posts regarding broken screens for Defy with a drop from a height of a meter or two. Are there series that don't have the gorilla glass? And does it happen with the Defy+ also?

Gorilla glass in not something enormous, it is just superb when compared to normal glass (believe me, worked for Corning for a few years ;-)).
It is just as 'unbrokeable' plates etc. All depends on how it hits an obstacle and what stresses are produced in the glass plate then, sometimes 5 m can be ok, sometimes 1 m is too much.
Best tip is: try not to throw your mobile phone, no matter with or without gorilla glass ;-)

Sorry, haven't seen such reports really. I've dropped it more times than I would have liked, but no screen damage here...and I highly doubt there were any bad batches either, Hardware is pretty good when coming from Motorola.
Lol , no, i didn't intend to drop the phone but was just curious if it realy has gorilla glass since the part of the price the phone is wearing is because of its ruggedness and one of the reasons i gave the Defy a advantage over some other models is exactly that. Also was wondering that maybe motorola has implemented the real gorilla glass later in the Defy+ model.
As far as the type of impact is concerned, it makes total sense to me what you are saying(i just thought thar Corning made the glass to be resistant when hit from any side), and it seemed to me as motorola has not implemented real gorilla glass after watching videos on yt where that same glass was hit with what not(i don't want to sound stupid for believing yt videos but it can realy bee seen taht the galss with motorola logo on it was still in perfect condition after hit with a hammer, which seemed to me alot more than a drop from a meter of height).
So i thought to ask in some more relevant place than yt for a direct experience .
Hi!
I can confirm, that a Defy can survive in one piece without crack simple drops from 1-1,5m and harder impacts with a wall, multiple times. (I don't like to explain it... )
As far as I know, if you have badluck and drop your phone exactly to its corner, the GorillaGlass could crack, too.
Questions go in the Q&A section
Touch Screen
Might not be the best place to post, but since it has to do with differences (or maybe equalities):
I have a Defy+ (MB526) with broken glass. One retailer says that the replacement touch screen for Defy (MB525) does not fit the Defy+, and another one here does not know. When I search internet for suppliers, it seems to be several that lists that the MB525 also fits the Defy+? While others does not list this. What is right?
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DEFY AND DEFY+
Defy MB525 =
Camera Module SoC (Green) OR Bayer (Red)
Battery 1540mAh
Defy+ MB526 =
Camera Module Bayer (Red) ONLY
Battery 1700mAh
EVERYTHING ELSE IS SAME AS DEFY
INCLUDES HOUSING ETC PLASTIC PARTS AND SCREEN ETC..
Also i think the chipset ils not the same

hey all XDA guys
i am planing to buy defy
my usage is not that much
simple phone calls of 2-3 hours a day and SMS
no 3G or 2G
but yeah 2-3 hours of wifi will be used
so what do you say , should i go for it
and if possible please say your experience with defy
thanks in advanced
if you are not interested about owning the ultimate phone, and you will use a custom rom, defy is a great phone with such many features. camera is the only thing i dont like very much
As an owner for the last few months I highly recommend it.
The pros and cons from my experience:
Pros-
Excellent value for money.
Compact yet has a 3.7" screen
Gorilla glass means no scratches.
Waterproof / dustproof (although the USB plastic band is getting less and less tight fit,
as you need to pull it every time you charge).
Cons-
Camera not so good, especially at non ideal lighting.
wifi receiver a bit weak.
Motorola Defy
I call a defy for about one year my own.
First: Its no High End Mobile...
But for everyday use, like sms, internet or of course Phone its great.
I never had the feeling its the wrong mobile for me.
For people who are using this Phone for social activities like facebook, twitter and stuff, the motorola interface, called motoblur, is quiet nice. I've been happy with motoblur... but then i installed a custom rom. its definetly smoother... But motoblur is not that bad
Everything works fine. Camera Quality is not the best, but for snapshots its enough. Also Video is not that goot, no 720p for some Defys and sound quality is also not that good.
another great thing about the defy are the developers. Custom Roms, Mods and Stuff like that are great. In the begining i said its no High End Phone, but thanks too the developers my Defy with CM7 and overclock to 1.2Ghz scores better Benchmarks than an Optimus 3d on Stock...
Battery lifetime is quiete nice. My Phone is almost the whole day in use. But battery lasts about one day... I'm using customroms for about a half year, so i forgot how it was with stock setttings.
Of yourse another great thing about the defy is that it is "undestroyable",... my last 3 mobiles broke after half an year... but the defy still works great and it dropped it a lot of times. its waterproof, i tested it. Gorillaglass, nice feature, but not as "awesome" as you may think. its not 100% scratchresistable, but its better than normal glass.
Hope this helped you.

Hi,
I've been looking around for any possible alternatives to the defy for use in the US on Tmobile. I'm actually quite happy with my Defy (except the earpiece failed, and when i tried to replace it w/ a k850i earpiece it didn't fit right and even after trying to cut off little bits, it didn't work - i probably broke it) and am hoping to fix the earpiece soon, but was wondering if there's anything w/ similar specs. I like the compact size w/ a screen bigger than the iphone.
The defy is pretty much all i've ever wanted in a phone, so do any other android (or windows phone) makers have anything that i'd like?
My current Defy is on cm7 w/ no problems.
In my opinion, the Defy is still the best option for US T-Mobile, especially with all the dev work. Although T-Mo doesn't carry them anymore, you can get good deals on ebay. I just helped my two younger brothers buy defys on ebay during the last couple of weeks: a new one for $200 and a used one in excellent condition for $150. You might also try Craigslist. Just make sure you're getting the USA T-Mobile one (with the white border); some of the ones on ebay are the all-black ones imported from other countries, and may not be compatible with the baseband frequencies used on T-Mobile's 3G networks.
Ye,
that's what i thought too. All other "rugged phones" are way underpowered, and there isn't a phone with the same screen size, but in a small package like the defy.
I'm just worried about another earpiece failure (assuming i can't fix mine) and i've been searching for a red lens defy on ebay, but they're not too common
Samsung
Maybe you could be interessted in a Samsung Galaxy Xcover S5690 phone or a Samsung Galaxy Ace. The Xcover is also an "outdoor" smartphone and has nearly the same size. The resolution is quite smaller, but the battery should last longer.
In fact I also think that the Defy is a nice smartphone and I think I would buy a new one, or maybe a Defy+
Ye I've looked at the samsung xcover, but as I said before, all these other phones have less processing power and smaller screens.
I guess if it comes down to it, I'll just have to keep my eyes out for red lens defy. (DEfy+ doesn't work in the US right?)
Yeah, T-Mobile USA uses 1700 and 1900 MHz frequency bands for high-speed data, and I don't think there are any versions of the Defy+ that are compatible with 1700 MHz. (There is a version compatible with 1900 MHz, though.) You'd still be able to make calls and get 2G data, but unless you happen to be in a 1900 MHz coverage zone you wouldn't get high-speed data.
I've been quite happy with my green-lense defy, although I too had the earpiece failure. (Fortunately my phone was still under warranty at the time.) You could always try another green lense, and hope for the best. I think I remember reading somewhere that only the earliest green-lense models had the earpiece problem, but I might be wrong about that.
ye i've actually enjoyed tinkering around w/ my phone. I haven't done much of that stuff since i was in middle school and high school playing w/ irqs and installing new video cards and sound cards, nics, etc. on my dad's old pcs.
Not sure why everyone was recommending the k850i earpiece to replace to defy earpiece though. mine did not come close to fitting, and even after removing some extra plastic it was way to think for the phone, and i accidentally broke it. I'm waiting for a new defy earpiece now. hope it works. using speakerphone and wired headphones isn't too bad, but getting annoying. probably better for my radiation levels though.
My Defy is showing its age. It doesn't have USB-on-the-go, its 512 MB RAM is no good for multitasking large apps, 2 GB internal memory was good two years ago but as the apps are getting bigger... And every 4.x ROM I tried is either slow, buggy, sucks my battery dry, or all of the above.
So what's next? Defy+ is not much more than an overclocked Defy and Motorola is a sinking ship anyway.
I'm looking for something with these minimum specs:
Size & weight
Not much bigger than the Defy, because it has to fit comfortably in my jeans, and in my running shorts when I'm jogging.
Max. footprint 115x62 mm, max. weight 130g.
Display resolution
Equal or better than the Defy: 480x852 pixels or more.
Frequencies
Should work in Europe, USA, and Asia, so three 3G frequencies or more.
4G would be nice to have as well, but not essential.
Storage
Should have a microSD card so I can always get at my data, even if the phone breaks.
Android
I don't care what it gets shipped with, as long as there are fast bug-free (no data bugs!) battery-efficient custom 4.x ROMs available. Of course my new phone should be easily flashed back to factory state without any traces of custom boot loaders/menus/etc. left behind.
CPU
At least 1 GHz, more is better.
RAM
At least 1 GB, more is better.
Battery
Battery life should be similar or better to that of a tweaked undervolted Defy. I like to carry a charged spare battery when I travel, so the battery should be replacable.
It looks like replacable batteries and memory cards are on the way out. But the main problem is size, because most new phones look more like a tablet than a phone. Is there anything out there that meets my size restrictions without compromising on specs?
I'm looking for one too.
Desire X ...
It is slim, the battery is not bad comparing to others....
Xperia P seems nice but no micro sd

Honestly I'm quite fine with mine. Don't understand why others experience issues. I'll keep my Defy as long as lord Quarx will continue his awesome work.
Anyway, I guess Sony devices are the best. Pick whatever you like. They're really good with open source.

That`s amazing.... The man says "what car should i replace my old VW BORA with ... ?
90% answer : Mercedes S Classe, BMW 7er or AUdi A8 ...
90% of people around here must be kids....
I think the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 it's a nice replacement...
It depends alot on what u expect....
I like defy because it`s size...i do not need 2 hands to handle it...
All the other phones are bigger. Defy has the size of a normal 3,5` of any other phone....but it has the display of 3,7`
Also no competition regarding battery it it`s sizes...
For me it is a matter of size and defy will always win...
I gave up an Desire X and an Atrix 4g for a Defy +
Thanx for the suggestions.
The HTC Desire X could be a good Defy replacement if it would fit some more pixels in its 4" screen, but at 400x800 its resolution is no match for the Defy. And it only has two 3G frequencies.
Xperia P & U have lots of 3G frequencies, but Sony likes to waste a lot of space below the display. Even so they only managed to fit in a 1300 mAh battery. You can't even pop a charged spare into an Xperia P unless you bring a screwdriver and kill your warranty. And it looks like Sony hates removable memory cards. With only 16 GB (Xperia P) and 8 GB (Xperia U) internal memory the lack of a microSD slot is definitely a deal breaker.
So I guess I'll keep looking for a Defy replacement a bit longer.
If Motorola would make a 4" version of their RAZR i/M so they could make it a cm shorter, and make the battery removable so you can revive a dead phone with a charged spare battery they'd have a winner.
Check out Xperia V, water and dust proof.... very nice specs and nice design
The best fone ever a nokia 3210 or a 3310 ther battery last ages and it hss greenscreen lmfao

The Sony Xperia SX would be a good model to build on. If Sony adds 1 or 2 mm width and/or thickness to fit a bigger battery, and add european frequencies (it's japanese only now) they'd have a very good Defy replacement.
AW: [Q] Which new phone to replace old Defy?
If mine dies this time I'll buy a new defy.......
MB525 red lense
Atrix 4G is high-end Defy, but I don't know...on Jeally Bean bad camera, no HWA...IMO bad upgrade for a long time. I really like Motorola Razr M and Xiaomi Mi2. They are little bigger, but I think it's still OK. But what about I really scared is digitizer. If you damaged Defy display, you can buy new digitezer on Ebay for 8$ and replace by yourselve. If you damage Razr M or similar handset, you can buy a new phone :/
Edit: And Motorola make 4" Razr M -> Razr D3.
the defy seems to be showing its age and for the next replacement, perhaps a sony life-proof model or the next motorola successor? moto will be doing some releases later this year i believe.
anyhow, i want a small size and portable phones instead of 5" gigantic screens.
thx.
p.s. how about Sony Xperia V? is it well supported by cyanogenmod?
So, Sony is the way to go?

RAZR M has an edge to edge display design which makes it smaller compared to other phones with same size display. You can easily use it single handedly.
And as far as performance is considered, the KRAIT inside it makes it far better than xperia P or U.
Removable battery needs a little more space, and when every manufacturer is trying to make their device slimmer, I think we'll be seeing more and more of 'unibody' phones so try to cope up with it..

I had a Defy+ about a year ago; I stopped using it right around the time the first KitKat ROMs were coming out. I'm tempted to get it again primarily for its ruggedness as well as for it's awesome phone call (GSM) quality. However, I'm worried that it will run slow, and I'd rather use a KK ROM instead of CM7 (if that even makes a speed difference).
My alternate choice is the Moto E. I was impressed with Motorola for the Defy+, and am encouraged by the Moto E's Gorilla Glass and "splash" protection.
Has anyone used both? Thoughts?

Hmm... It's good to hear that someone else has gone back to a Defy too, and it's not bad of a review on the lagginess considering the device's age. I'm also cool with 4.2.2, I just didn't want to go back to Gingerbread.
I'm more encouraged to get the Defy now...
I used both. The Moto E is much faster but apart from speed, the Defy is generally better. The Defy has a much better camera (with LED flash and macro), a compass, water resistance, removable battery, better GSM as you said. The splash resistance of the Moto E is nothing compared to the water resistance of the Defy. I think the display quality is a bit better for the Defy but the Moto E has a bigger one and a better Gorilla Glass. I also think the sound quality of the Defy is better. The problem of the Defy is that is very slow compared to the Moto E...
Why not get a Moto G instead?

Thanks for the Moto G suggestion; it slipped past my radar not having an IP rating. But I ended up ordering a Defy+ anyway. I'm really looking for water resistance and ruggedness, but also that call quality. Those qualities are paramount to me where I'm living: rainy season, spotty GSM connections and lots of conversations not in a native language. The extra oomph of the earpiece really helped with that, and I remember getting a lot of comments that I sounded clearer/louder too. I also forgot about the removable battery, too, or at least that others don't have one, which is a plus. You did help sell me, haha.
Also, I have a Nexus 7 LTE. I usually have that on me 50% of the time, and would rather read news, chat or check Facebook and stuff on that. Hopefully if I minimize social media on a Defy to say, Twitter and Instagram, and basically keep it minimal, it won't be too laggy. But I suppose current versions of all these apps are pretty RAM intensive.
Hi everybody, i open this thread in order to archive some important things and some questions about the Moto Z Play/Moto Z Play Droid, like a guide for the new owners and the old ones like me or some of you.
I wish that you could colaborate posting in this thread important news. Let's start.
Be careful with your Z's screen
In xda there is a user that posted an image with his MZP broken, but he is not the only one, in other forums (htcmania as an example) another user reported that his phone was cracked at the first drop leaving the phone completely useless, i have heard about some people in whatsapp groups with the same problem (the first drop broke the phone), in reddit two users posted the same problem, their screen was cracked and it turned off forever. In the following links you will see the proof:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Moto_Z/comments/5a63md/cracked_screen_moto_z_play/

http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=1245224
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/help/type-screen-glass-scratch-resistant-t3462455
The back of the phone is covered with plastic
This images has a better description than my word haha, but let me explain why that plastic is very important:
The plastic must remain with the phone, because in case of a fall, if the glass breaks, that will remain it together.
Gorilla glass 3 or 4?
Some people says that the Moto Z Play has gorilla glass 3 because is cheaper than the 4, but in lenovo forums they say that is gorilla glass 4, you can check it here:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-Z-Play/Moto-Z-Play-glass-protection/m-p/3452157#M55
Scratches in the main camera?
As the back glass panel, it seems to be that the camera lens has a plastic, but if not, the glass gets scratched very easily, so if you can, buy a plastic protector
IMEI 0 after flashing a new rom?
Some people has this problem with his MZP, after flashing another version (like the verizon one or something like that, i don't know about U.S. carriers) their imei gets 0, so i recommend that stay in your current rom.
Moto Z force and Moto Z Play can wear the same cases?
It's like a rumor, but in youtube you can see some reviews about MZP cases that were builded for the Force edition and it fits perfectly but the only one problem is the place of the headphone jack, actually i have a case that says "MZ Force" and it fits like it was builded for the Play edition.
Apps non optimized for MM
There are some apps (specially that ones which has some time without an update that wastes the battery, for example the "Xperia digital clock" that Is a widget which shows time and weather but it drains the battery giving to me only 8 hours of screen. At the final of the post you will see the averrage of my battery (work in progress)
If you have something to share with us, leave a reply.
ps, sorry for my bad english haha
Reserved...
The screen will obviously crack if you drop your phone and it lands on the screen. That's obvious and not exclusive to this phone. Saying that we should be careful and use a case and screen protector is absolutely redundant.
I've flashed a stock ROM to unroot my device. At that moment there was no RETBR rom on the stock rom thread, so I tried LATAM.
Now my IMEI is 0 even after flashing the RETBR or any other ROM. (dialing *#06#*).
But when I enter fastboot and give the command "mfastboot getvar imei" it gives me back my correct IMEI number.
Nice post! Think realistic battery life (%/hr with screen on and %/hr with screen off) might be good to add so people can figure out if they have wakelocks. This phone hides it well, but once you figure those out, the battery life is honestly on another level. Again, great post, can't wait to see it grow as we all collectively learn more!

Gotcha. I'm thinking of replacing it with a dbrand skin. Hopefully removing the plastic and replacing it with the skin will help with the mod staying on since the skin makes it slide a little.

dude, have you fixed that? I'm facing the exact same problem :/
Got another one that's not super obvious: the Z play, unlike most phones that use the snapdragon 625, is running 32-bit android. That's why it has 3gb ram instead of the now very common 4gb (32-bit android doesn't support more than 3gb). If you look at both battery and performance of the Z play vs sd625 phones that run 64-bit android (Moto g5+, Xiaomi note 4, Redmi 4 prime, etc) the Z play blows them out of the water. This is why. Afaik it is the most powerful 32-bit phone ever.

Is this for real? Amazing SOT, what type of use do you give to the phone? WiFi, 4g? Tell me more please, I have a htc10, and normally 5 hours of SOT, and 20hours of use is the norm.
IMEI 0 any way to fix this tried flashing stock ROMs all day and custom no fix I guess.
From Nougat to Oero the place where the IMEI is stored changed. if you downgraded, the IMEI can't be found. But be aware that AFAIK there is risk to completely brick the device when doing the upgrade again after a downgrade, and I'm not sure if a suiting blank flash is available to revive it if that happens.
