Now That You Have ICS Is Your Note Noticeably Faster?

I'm not intersted in Quadrant or Antutu scores. I'm just curious if after upgrading to stock Samsung ICS you actually notice speed improvements on your note.
Meaning, does switching between screens seem faster? Does moving around the phone feel slower? Things of that nature. Now that the hardware GPU is actually being used can you see/feel the difference?

I can't recall whether the app drawer and screens scroll better but one thing is for certain, web browsing and scrolling through the market is hugely improved.
Messaging is also less laggy and more responsive, the S Memo has been improved a great deal.
It's a good update but I wouldn't be shocked to see another incremental update to polish it off.

For me it seems more laggy and drains battery faster. Few apps crashed as well. I'm sure sammy will release few more updates but I'm not too thrilled for this release. I have heard people bricking their phone & missing key feature apps for premium suite (MyStory and s-note) with this update too, feels like Samsung did half ass job on it.

The areas that it is definitely faster for me are:
1. Coming out of the lock screen
2. Pulling down and pushing back up the notification bar.
3. In ADW EX, pinching to zoom in and out of the homescreens and homescreen previews is smooth now, It used to be pretty stuttered in LC2.
4. Music apps that require touch input to trigger sounds eg. Solo, TheDrum, Grand Piano. There is noticeably less latency between touching the screen and hearing the sounds.

I can confirm the following after testing this release under myriad conditions
ICS Stunner is a 100 times better!!

Hi There,
First off all, the N-7000 didn't move officially to Ics yet, since we're all still waiting for the first Samsung stock leak.
Now what you see, are some AOSP, AOKP and CM roms based on Ics 4.0.4. They are more than ready for daily use, stable, but surely missing some Nice features like SPen....
On this forum, there is one leak from Samsung, witch is making Success, a chineese Ics leak, that is originally for the GT-9220, A Galaxy note released in the china, but not with the same processor, thus making the leak not compatible with the N-7000.
Super Devs like Chainfire, maxicett, Alba and others, took this and made it usefull for us!
Some says that it's risky, but believe me, I'm on the maxicet's one " TheMidTeam", and for me is the Best so far!
All the Samsung features are present, The rom is smooth, super fast, stable, and the Best is yet to come, once we'll have our own N-7000 Ics Samsung leak : let's say this Q of the year.
Once said, my freind : make your backup and choose one of the aboves Ics.
Just follow every step the Dev says, and you are set!

I think you will find that ics is out for the note... have a look at the rest of the forums. Released ota in Germany.

All the ICS ROMs I've tried were snappier than GB in general.

Installed it yesterday. Cannot really say it is noticably faster at this point. I have noticed the browser is faster and has many more settings. I have not had any issues and think it is a nice upgrade. It is certainly not slower.

For me its made a massive difference, everything loads instantly now, totally impressed how much so, never thought it would make that much difference.

My note started slower than with GB. Some FC, unable to use the camera, for example, as it frozes. But after some use, things are getting better.
I feel like apps data needs to be updated somehow, so with the use of every application it's getting better.
Anyway, I'm a bit "disappointed". I felt a higher improvement when installed ICS on my Desire HD, so I thing I expected in some way that Note will have a great improvement too. And yes it's better (now, with the use), but not so much as expected.
Maybe is just because with GB my note was already nearly perfect

Initial releases are usually buggy and it seems that it's the case here.
What I can put it down to is whether or not ICS was installed after a full wipe as it appears that those who did it this way don't have the problems you mention above.
I also got it from kies as I was on stock LC1 (DBT) and have these annoying problems so if it continues I will either wait for an update from sammy (anyones guess when this might happen) or wipe then flash the new ICS.

I updated kies on my computer and plugged in my GNote. I have an DBT unlocked version I bought on Amazon in December. It updated just fine.

Yeah it's probably best to start with a clean slate. When you've got all kinds of data from GB floating around while using ics stuff can get borked and whatnot.

ICS in general is ok but I'm having issues with bluetooth. It regularly loses connection with my Nissan Connect car system. Also before on GB when streaming music over bluetooth the car unit would show the name of the track playing, on ICS it doesn't.
The exact same thing happened when I updated my Galaxy S2 to ICS. I want to try another brand phone, maybe HTC, thats running ICS to see if it is a problem with ICS or my Nissan Connect system.
As I wasn't having any serious issues on GB I reverting back until the bluetooth problem is sorted.

Back to ICS for me....

For the meantime at least...
I skipped ICS and went straight from GB to jelly bean, to be more exact, helly bean..
Now helly bean did run fairly slick for me, but the other night there I was bored, so decided to flash a couple of ROMs just for something to do, and since I skipped ICS, I thought I'd try slimICS with semaphore kernel.
My phone is totally instantaneous now, running even nicer than it was, also, I now have 220MB of free ram compared to the 80 or something I had on JB, which can only be good.
Considering I had the Google now disabled on JB before, I can't even think of any features of jb that I miss not having, and it looks pretty much the same too. I just can't warrant losing 150MB nearly of ram, and my phone running a little slower, even if its barely noticeable.
Also, battery life is a lot better in ICS compared to JB, and I did go through correct procedure to try and improve it in JB.
So for now I'm gonna stick with slimICS, at least until the next time I'm bored
I may end up going back to JB, but right now I'm kinda thinking that mainly because of ram constraints, that the trusty old i9000s are better off on ICS.. or am I wrong??
Would be interested to hear of others views or experiences... Cheers...

Latest GNexus release has 150 - 200mb of free ram too. It also includes a task manager to kill unneeded processes. For me it is the best Rom right now (I upgraded from slimics). I feel the butter of jb with triple buffering now
maybe your bad experiences are caused by devil kernel and/or different sd partition of heallybean Rom?
For me heallybean Rom lagged too. So I switched to semaphore which gained my device more speed and stability

I'll maybe give GNexus JB with semaphore a try next time I decide to flash a rom then.
How do you find your battery life is with it? Cos I really am noticing a big improvement in my sema/slimICS compared to my old devil/hellybean. Just got 19 hours out of a charge when I was used to about 11, not scientific I know but I use my phone a very similar amount each day. Definitely a lot better.
If I could get back to JB, with as much free ram as I have now, and a similar battery life I'd be a happy person.

Now I am not a power user but I second the GNexus rom.
Using the default Semaphore kernel it seems to use 2 to 3% an hour. This is just sitting in my pocket with wifi on.
I haven't run it below 50% so I don't know if the 2 to 3% is lineair since I have a charger in the car and at work.
About the free memory, well it all depends. I also have a S2 which I use for data (S uses a company paid sim but has very limited data) and I don't think the S2 is alot faster. The only thing I really notice is that the camera is faster, but what do you want.
This rom is smooth and does all I need it for.
I would suggest to give it a go without looking at the memory etc.

Same as first post for me, right now I don´t have enough time to try all the differents rom around but decided to install CM10 and the impressions were not so good, including fast battery drain. Surely gonna give it another try, but now I´m back with old good CM9.

I also loved Slim ICS 4.2. But now, slim bean 2.3 makes me forget about slim ics.
Together with semaphore is as stable and maybe faster then slim ics.
And 2.4 is almost out

I have to agree that ICS and SlimICS in particular is better than any JB rom out there now. Especially if you take advantage of the "Power Saver" feature in ASS, then it is definitely a keeper.

Bit less free ram than I had on ICS but if its gonna run this sweet I don't care. Its all good in the 'hood so far

Seriously, it's like treacle! I'm about ready to root and install gingerbread.
Dialler takes forever to come up, when I tap the search button it takes many seconds for the keyboard to appear.
No-one else seems to mention this problem?
I have very few apps installed, and certainly no bloatware like task killers, etc.

No, you aren't the only one. Our phone is just a bit too old. All we can do now is bear with it until we upgrade.

Jelly bean is slow as **** for me. I guess most of the people just can't notice that jb's animations and reaction time when touching the screen is just delayed.
I've been frustrated with my nexus not acting fast untill i tried one combination. I'm i9023 user and this combo is just perfect for my phone. No input lag whatsoever, no animation lag, everything is just fast and instantly responsive. Give it a try and tell me what you think.

Use it with apex launcher, because trebuchet may lag when opening app drawer. To avoid dialler lag, i suggest using exdialer, it's downloadable from the market.

Even the keyboard is just faster than on jb. Scrolling, switching between windows, statusbar is more responsive. Try and tell me what you think.
Sometime I wonder how come poeple say jelly bean is faster than ics. First impressions are good, but after very short time of usage jelly bean is full of slow ****. Every rom based on jb is just slower than this combo.

Nope. No problems here. Phone is fast and stable, although a little struggling with battery life, but like I said before somewhere in these forums, life is full of tradeoffs.

Yes this thing is slow. Its actually kept me from being involved with the phone. I don't add different ROMs or anything anymore because they all feel to heavy for this phone.
I'm just counting down the days until the next Nexus is released.

For all of you who are not happy with the speed of Nexus S, try using this rom -

I can assure it is definitely much faster than the stock ICS or jellybean ROMs. If you have been using the stock Nexus S ROMS, you will see noticeable difference in the colours. They are much better on this Xperia ROM and does not have that yellow shade. I love the ROM and believe me I have tried almost every ROM available on XDA for for Nexus S.
Though there are 2 issues, for which I haven't found any solution, it blocks the calls coming from unknown numbers and you do not even see a missed call. And you can't use the default screen locks. But apart from these, the ROM is rock solid, never crashes or hangs, everything works fine and it is ultra smooth.
If you think your phone is running slow, I highly recommend this ROM. Everyone should give this ROM at least a try.

I don't really notice a difference speedwise between ICS and JB. They are both a little slower than GB was, but not unbearable. The added features of ICS/JB are well worth it IMO.
Overclocking a little bit can help, although it can hurt battery performance a bit.

Agreed. Current combo keeps up with wife's combo. Don't know what the OP is talking about. See sig for both setups.

I agree with jellybean being kinda slow. However, i dont know if it's just the rom's were installing on our device, cause i kinda remember stock JB being pretty fluid which is kinda making wanna go back to stock again

GB was stale, solid, and best battery life.
I miss having a flashlight app that worked and better battery life.
ICS and JB have been ok up until I started having power button issues last week.
JRO03L update seems to have fixed the majority of freezes, crashes, and power button issue.
After the reality has set in, I would have stick with GB

no problems here. aokp jb build 2 and beladus marmite 4.4 kernel combo is running smooth on mine.

Are you implying that every end-user of android phones should learn to root or install custom roms/kernel to get a DECENT experience? While I'm content to see Google supporting a device almost 2 years after its release (Apple does that as well btw), I'm kind of feeling disgusted about the overall user experience, laggyness, crashes, random reboots and decreased battery life. I wish Google released a FINISHED product/operating system and not leave its customers in a sort of beta-testing fog.

I'd suggest backing up your data and wipe your whole device like a madman. Format.
And start from scratch with the rom of your choice
Might be that time for your ol' precious Nexus S.

Memory management is the problem...
I think the problem has to do with the way memory is managed in ICS/JB... I still can't find found a recent ROM that will keep the launcher in memory no matter what. That's terrible for user experience! None of the task or memory manager apps in the Google Play Store seem to help either.

^ this. I was having a bad experience with JB as well until I formatted my sdcard. And I'm not talking about wiping from CWM. I'm talking about mounting it as USB storage and formatting from a PC.

Since official JB - i hate my phone!

Let me start off by saying - I have never rooted or installed any custom roms or whatever on my phone. The reason is that I just wanted a phone and not play around with it anymore (playing around = more can break).
Since my SGS3 notified me about the JB update and I installed it via OTA i literally started hating my phone. Here are multiple reasons why:
WiFi does not work. I have the same N-router I had before JB and since then my phone couldn't log in to my WiFi network - always stuck on "authenticating". I then configured the phone to use a static IP and not DHCP and it can connect successfully to my network - but I have NO internet connection. I now my router is fine because it used to work great before and my Nexus 7 as well as ALL other devices work without a problem. I refuse to downgrade my routers speed to B- or G-speed.
Google Calendar won't sync. Under Sync -> Google, for more than a week it says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly.". Mail and Contacts etc. sync just fine. Calendar on my Nexus 7 syncs fine too. ****ing annoying to not have your appointments visible.
Battery dies _much_ faster. For some reason the battery doesn't last anywhere as long as it used to with ICS. I'm not doing anything different, the battery just drains and drains. I have a suspicion about "gpsd" which sometimes pops up under "Settings -> Battery" even though I haven't used Google Maps or anything. I keep killing it but the phone still dies at least three times faster than before. So it must be more than just gpsd.
F*cking hot! Using it to text someone real quick - the phone gets really hot at the bottom. What the F is up with that? I'm not playing a game or watching a movie or whatnot. 1 minute of WhatsApp makes my phone go toast. On ICS i had to really push the phone to become hot.
Slow. Navigating menus etc. got of course more smooth than on ICS but I have a feeling that a lot of apps now work worse than before. For example the contacts app starts even slower than it did before (>2 seconds). No matter which browser I use, it lags far more often than before. Don't know what it is, but it's definitely there.

I guess I could reset my phone to factory. But seriously - that's not acceptable. Backing up my texts, messages, photos, app settings etc. is too time consuming and annoying. And what if after resetting the phone the WiFi still doesn't work - am I supposed to use my mobile data to download all those apps (Google Search is like 10 MB, other apps are no little fly either). It adds up (time + money).
That Google Nexus 4 is starting too look really good right about now. But I'd rather keep my Samsung. Although I'm probably NOT gonna buy any Samsung phone again any time soon.

You are just bad luck for been updated with faulty firmware.

I don't know if I'd agree with all the issues you're having, but is have to agree with you on the fact that Sammy jellybean for the s3 is not really that good...I've tried all of them including stock odexed and deodexed, wanam, insertcoin, omega, etc etc... they're all great roms, but the base is still Sammy jellybean, and battery life sucks when compared to ics. Also, app performance is better on ics based Roms. The buttery smoothness also lasts for only some time after boot and gradually the UI status stuttering, as do the launchers, whether touchwiz or third party... probably the reason why I'm still on an ics Rom.

Thanks for the valuable info mate. Is there no alternative for us to use jellybean?? Will AOKP/AOSP or Cyanogen Roms help?? I am on Jellybean base currently. ICS was a lot better

AOSP based Roms are definitely good options to official Sammy jellybean, but the problems are with closed source drivers etc that are not available to AOSP Roms. So stuff like tethering, camera, etc will never be as good as the official firmware...
Best thing is for Sammy to develop a jellybean update with these issues fixed... till then I guess you should stick to AOSP/AOKP for a better jellybean experience.

That's why I have dual boot. Paranoid as primary for performance; smoothness (and only 160 MB to download !! plus google apps), and a Sammy ROM as secondary for tethering when I need it.

Let's wait for a wile... Sammy promised to public some sorces. Will see in just a week what it will be.
Bad side - most good programmers left developing cm10 for sgs3...
So not many who will be able pick up the cm10 flag and rise it again even if Sammy will public sources..

I had the same problem until yesterday, when i decided to factory reset my phone. Used TitaniumBackup and took about 2 hours to restore everything :|
Now it's much much better. I had to restart my phone about 2~3 times a day before. I haven't since resetting.

Slow. Navigating menus etc. got of course more smooth than on ICS but I have a feeling that a lot of apps now work worse than before. For example the contacts app starts even slower than it did before (>2 seconds). No matter which browser I use, it lags far more often than before. Don't know what it is, but it's definitely there.
What the f*ck is this bullsh*t Samsung? I'm not a power user and have no "special" apps installed. Stock ROM, no root etc. and still a buttload of problems since JB. On ICS everything was great.
I guess I could reset my phone to factory. But seriously - that's not acceptable. Backing up my texts, messages, photos, app settings etc. is too time consuming and annoying. And what if after resetting the phone the WiFi still doesn't work - am I supposed to use my mobile data to download all those apps (Google Search is like 10 MB, other apps are no little fly either). It adds up (time + money).
That Google Nexus 4 is starting too look really good right about now. But I'd rather keep my Samsung. Although I'm probably NOT gonna buy any Samsung phone again any time soon.

On the contrary I started loving my phone after jb update and I even dumped aokp for samsung rom
Smooth ui
Faster than ics
Improved camera features
Much more to say
There are one or two glitches here and there but none of them are show stoppers, absolutely happy with jb

I returned to stock rom because it has a better battery life than wanam his. But i love it. I dont have any problems you mentioned. I wish the best for you and I hope you full whipe and flash again. This would propably fix all your problems.
Also to people who are restoring apps with TB, i stopped this method because I am convinced it does more harm to the rom than good

To each his own I guess... but I believe the battery is much worse on jellybean as compared to ics on Sammy Roms...and apps behave much better on ics too.
As far as project butter is concerned, UI smoothness is nowhere near what jellybean promised at release... still stutters badly at times... ics feels more at home on the s3, at least with the current lot of jellybean releases by Sammy

Me too... Went from great phone to hate phone. JB just brought me more STOP errors. Even gallery now stops 1-2 times a week.
I hate the grey topbar. I have a bug that when i exit an app, i can see the shadows in the icons slowly returning back instead of beeing instant in ICS.
The phone is also slower. Project butter is just not there. It's like samsung took that out...

Happened to me when I had my Galaxy Note. Did an ICS OTA update and everything went wrong.
Now, I'm using S3, I am now using custom ROM and happy about it, faster and lighter with no problem at all.

I wasnt referreling to you. I was just as positive as you are
Restoring from TB is just a personal weirdness, I have the idea that pushing all that data into /system sometimes corrupts. I prefer a clean install from Play.
Also i have seen dozensbof people restoring ICS apps and data and complaining the Rom is bad. Thats why I prefer people not too.

Either root and install a custom rom or wipe data and setup from scratch.
Every now and then software can and will be broken by an update, it doesnt matter if its samsung/android, windows, or even ios - updating can go wrong. Go ahead and get a nexus, even though the chance is slim its possible that the same thing happens when the next update is pushed out.
Im not defending samsung at all, obviously it sucks having to wipe data to fix the problem, but in the end it will solve it - as well as rooting and installing a custom rom will.
Whats with the F*kn language btw?

1 . try wanamlite, android revolution hd and checkrim
2- s-memo and stock browser eat battery disable them.
those two should fix most of ur problems if they dont it's a app u installed.

Stock browser? This is the first time I heard that it affects battery life.
Doesn't it give better battery than chrome?

Stock ics vs stock jb

I have waited so long for this update and finally its out. The much hyped nature UX. I didnt like the new TW. I am still in love with the Tw my nite has since the beginning. Does anyone of you feel the same. Is there anyway to put the old tw launcher on the new jb???
And obviously thr main question is the stock jelly bean worth the update???? It didnt feel as if its on par compsred to the ics in performance.

I've been running my German Note in the UK with stock ROMs for 16 months, only flirting briefly with Paranoid Android for a week or so. I updated from ICS to JB the day the official German release came out and was soon back to ICS due to terrible battery life with WiFi enabled on the JB ROM. However, after a few days I had itchy fingers and decided to try again. There are a couple of new features, although in practical daily use I don't think I'm taking advantage of any of them, but still the battery performance with WiFi on is inferior to ICS.
I do have my device rooted and have DPI set to 240, which means TW is a bit useless to me, so I'm running Nova Launcher instead. I would hope that there will be further updates to address the WiFi battery drain issues, but right now I would be as happy on ICS as JB. I just can't be bothered with yet another ROM swap and rebuild when I hope the future will soon bring performance improvements for JB. That was certainly the case when the first lamentable ICS ROM was released and it took two further releases before that settled down to be a decent ROM.

Try the LSF fw for Trinidad and Tobago. The battery life is much better for this release than the German LSF for me.

Well my region PAK always receives the update very late. So by the time i get my hands on it, its already refined. I tried the german rom but in the end felt disappointed by the visuals and overall performance. So i am pak on my JPLR8 ics.cthe multiwindow thing always charmed me. But if by any means i get my hands on this feature on my current rom. I would be much more happier than having a full update. The stock ics on note is such a complete package for me that its nit even letting me change my phone. From default keyboard to any other utility. Its outperforming all the other android oems in software.
Glad to know that some other people share the same opinion.

Hello mate, fyi I have just gone back to ICS from JB (LSZ). I found that there were a few things with JB that....just weren't quite right.
Whereas, for me, ICS works perfectly and has great battery life too.
In terms of new features, JB doesn't really have much to be honest. The multi window is quite cool (watching youtube whilst messaging, for example).... but in my humble opinion, the note is just too small to use the multi window effectively.
If Samsung can release a JB firmware that is fault-free, like ICS..... then I'll go back to JB.

I stick to stock, save for the kernel, but after reading thousands of threads about JB, and for what I use the device for, I think I'll stick with
ICS. I pretty much use phone, email, web, camera, text msg and that's about it. Other than a youtube video, that's it on video, and I don't really
use the audio player. It's a solid work device for my use, and ICS has been rock stable, and even with wi-fi, I can get pretty much a days worth
out of the battery. If the Galaxy S-IV from leaks appears as good as it looks on paper, I'll get JB with that, but I think I'll stick with ICS.

ICS 4.0.4 still win, you know the one with old touchwiz i forgot what version is that. Im sure thats the last android version that is meant for galacy note..

sammy kept on telling the very aspect of ics which triggered the brick bug also gave it the razor sharp edge
