I preordered the 16gb, and how much gbs are allotted to install apps? I have the galaxy s2 and my limit was about 2gb, and I ran out of room.. Will I have the same problem with Nexus 7?
The 16GB should allow around 14GB for you to mess around with. Somebody posted an exact number somewhere on here....
13.33GB

Questions go in the Q&A section
On Android 3.0 and above you no longer have seperate partitions for apps and data.
The Nexus 7 has 5.7 (8gb) or 13.3 (16GB) GB of space for apps and all other data.

Why, is it that my galaxy s2 on ICS, is still limited to 2gb?

might be cause it is a Pre-ICS phone.
I never understood why device manufacturers always take away some GB from the available storage. Why not dedicate storage separate from everything else for the system/OS and give us the full 16gb?

Hmm, I guess, it was gingerbread 2.3.6 and then they released Kies ICS, and I upgraded it but still restricts to 2gb.

assuming dark of the moon is actually on the flash storage and isn't streamed, deleting it if you don't want/like would give more maybe even 1gb......

If everything is on the same partition, then how does mounting USB storage work? Do you have any links regarding the partitioning?
If you had a Pre-ICS phone like the Galaxy S II then the partions would remain like they were before.
My post only applies to devices that shipped with ICS, and specifically nexus devices since i can't speak for any device i don't own.
@fox: from what i've read, Transformers is almost 2GB of data and is not downloaded already (at least on the I/O ones). The storage space i posted is confirmed actual space from the I/O Nexus 7 and 16GB Galaxy Nexus. That is total space, not free after system/sd data
@AZImmortal: The device uses MTP for use on Windows. Macs require some software (www.android.com/filetransfer)
This allows you to only see the /sdcard partition and the system is protected. Also has a lot of stupid issues as well but it's the best way to keep the system secure. Many people who have Galaxy Nexus devices use AirDroid or other similar apps to transfer data since MTP is very annoying.
Ah, thanks for the explanation. My devices have all shipped with Gingerbread or lower so far so I haven't been exposed to MTP.

no problem. it was a huge shock for those of us who bought Galaxy Nexus devices as well.
MTP does suck sometimes, but it really is the best way to deal with it. I do recommend checking out AirDroid. just amazing app and works over your wifi network so no USB cable needed. And transfers are a lot faster than USB/MTP

Hi,
We are able to unlock the bootloader ...
We got root ...
My question, is it possible to repartition the storage?
For example: Right now, there is only 1GB space for internal storage.
Is it possible to create 2GB?
And if it is possible, will it be a problem if Google have another OS update?
I meant, does Android OS update will check the "original" storage "layout"?
Thanks
excellent question.
I'd like to know as well, as i already have 1.5 GB of apps & games installed on my SGS that i plan to restore to the Nexus S when it arrives
meaning i'm already over the limit, and i've not even started yet
The answer is probably no. The same question was raised on the MT4G/G2 forums regarding their internal storage and it was determined that the eMMC/storage/whatever it's called chip can only be flashed one time. After that, it is physically impossible to change how it's partitioned in any way.
Now, granted, this is a Samsung device and, thus, they may use different chips. I find it unlikely, though, that it will be any different.
there might be a chance if Nexus S is indeed another breed of the Galaxy S family.
if it's fixed size and not changeable, then it's a good news for us, we will not see the corruption problems we found on many SGS when people repeatedly formatted their Internal SD to try different things
but on the other hand, it will kinda suck, as that will really limit the amount of Apps we can install in the device.
which will put a very heavy enphasis on using App2SD even more

You know, a gigabyte for apps goes a very long way. I had 130 apps on my i9000, lots of big ones like CoPilot and some games. I never even got over the 500mb mark on using up my app storage.
Never say never, of course, but I can't imagine worrying about app space on my phone. I'm sure I'll have a new one with much better specs by next summer, which, if apps start growing in size, will have more memory.
How do you have 1.5GB of apps? I have over 150 installed, and they're only like 300MB. Granted, I don't have a ton of games, but I still think it would be hard to get that many apps.

Hi XDA members,
I just got my new S4 and was playing around with it until i wanted to move my files from my old phone (S2) to the S4.....
I bought the 16gb version but when I plug it in it only shows 9,22 GB how come?
I know there is space needed for the rom and such but i dont think the rom needs 7gb of space?
is there a way to get my beloved GB's?
Thanks for any response
The internal memory is never a true 16Gb to begin with. It's closer to 13 or 14. I forget the reasons why, it's something to do with manufactures misrepresenting t hings slightly. For example a 1tb hdd has only about 958gb available.
Secondly, the s4 rom is indeed massive. It's up around five to six times the size of vanilla android thanks to all the features Samsung added to it.
There are ways to mitigate the problem, the newer firmware has the ability to move apps to the external sd card and if you're rooted you can use the "folder mount" app to transfer any folder to the external.
I hope that going forward Samsung will start providing 32Gb internal as standard especially if they keep adding more "features" aka bloat. In the mean time it's what we have to deal with.

Is it in the works? I really want a 64GB version. 32GB is not enough for me. Keep running out of space.
Also:
I'm pissed off that Google intentionally kept us from upgrading, doing the same shady crap Apple does, exploiting consumers and stealing from them with the business model. by intentionally not adding expandable storage and charging more for higher memory.
I'm disappointed that Galaxy Tab 7 still isn't close to the performance of Nexus 7. (dual core, etc.) I would gladly pay more for a device which had the same performance and looks of Nexus 7 but with external SDXC slot.
Your posting in the wrong section. Should be in qa.

Thanks for the tip, didn't know about that section.
As for complaining, I can complain from an ethical standpoint.
Don't really think I would consider that unethical.
More memory = higher cost for manufacture.
Same thing as buying a 500gb hard drive vs 1 tb.
Also you can use a flash drive with an adapter

Not true.
More memory does Not = higher cost for manufacturer.
Put in 16GB and add an SD card slot. Then consumers can decide if they want to buy extra memory which is MUCH CHEAPER than the "upgrade" to the 32GB closed device.
Didn't you know this?
Google has no justification except Apple's - intentional consumer exploitation to make a profit.
The logic that Google has a 0-profit margin is irrelevant. Because if they were really not trying to make a profit, then they'd let us upgrade to as much storage as we want.
I don't think so about a 64gb version. The Nexus supports USB thumb drives using OTG cable. They make OTG microUSB-microSD adapters.
Google is pushing their cloud storage services so a 64gb would not be in their best interest.
Plus what do you need 64gb of data for use at all times? You don't need to carry a whole movie or music collection everywhere you go. If you're going on a trip then throw what you need on there. I have never gotten a low storage message on 32gb.

First off, I'm NEVER buying cloud. EVER. I'm not even going to get into my reasons for this.
Second, USB is not practical. Then you've got this thing hanging off the end. We don't want that.
Third, ideally I'd like to have my full ebook and audiobook collection as well as music collection and videos too available on my device. I can connect to my home PC filesystem when at home, but when I'm away I don't want to have to stream data over a network. I want the data on my device.
By the way, SDXC supports up to 2TB SD cards. Obviously 2TB SD is not out yet, but it has the upwards capability.
I get low storage on my 32GB daily. I started getting it shortly after buying the device. Because I do tons of stuff and have TONS of data that I WANT on my device. It's what I want, you can't argue with what I want.
I would like terabytes worth, but since that's not possible I at least want to be able to CHOOSE if I want to upgrade the device to the maximum memory possible - which by the way is currently a 256GB SD card.
In 2009, almost 5 years ago now, Wired talked about how 2TB micro SDXC card is coming soon. So it's on the horizon.
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/01/two-terabyte-sd/
In this video of the Mobile World Congress 2009, the manufacturer talks about how "2TB micro SD could be about 5 years to come out". That was in 2009. 5 years from 2009 is 2014.

If what you want is more storage, and you are not willing to argue what you want, I guess I have only one question for you.
Why did you buy a 32GB tablet, knowing full well that it has no removable storage and you refuse to use cloud storage? You knew it wouldn't be enough storage yet you bought it knowing this and then complain. I don't get it, unless I'm missing something.
I could be wrong, but I think Google or Asus would have to pay some type of licensing fee if they wanted to include a microsd card slot. I think that was their reasoning for not having it and the cloud of course.

Maybe instead of spending your time complaining you can learn to mod the device. Someone modded a GS3 to hold 128gb or something like that.
Oh wait I know what your reply will be... "But it's MY money and I should be able to spend it to buy what I WANT."
I'm just letting you know that you sound like a spoiled kid. You are entitled to your opinion and whatever but idk if you're using your time wisely.

Hm, sounds like your needs are not met with the device you have. So, Why not research and get a device that fits your needs?
1. Your needs are that you need to store all of your ebooks, audio books, etc without putting it on cloud.
2. You realized that 32gb is not enough storage, and currently there are no plans for Google to come out with 64gb version of nexus 7. (at least that I know of)
3. You do not want an OTG cable and something hanging from the device.
4. I think it may be in your best interest to find another device that fits your needs or, make modification to your current device as some of the other members mentioned.
Good luck.
There's a microSD reader in the works that's barely larger than the card itself. That should suffice anyone. I however also agree that not offering a card slot is greedy on Google's part. Hell I'd would have still bought the 32G version if it had an expansion slot and probably stuck a 64G card in the slot. Of course I'm a storage whore.

I don't think it was that OTG isn't working but the android functionality used by Nexus Media Importer to get notified and mount the drive wasn't working.
The kernel support for OTG must be working because stickmount works.
NMI uses Android level access so doesn't need root. Stickmount uses lower level access so it needs root.

Hi, DrewReaLee...
I wouldn't worry about it... my 'grouper' 16Gb Nexus 7, running rooted KitKat 4.4.2 with franco kernel, is showing similar figures to yours...
25.7Mb free out of 639Mb
(27,029,504 bytes free/670,826,496 bytes total system capacity)
Google are no different than other software companies when it comes to OS updates... they have a tendency to 'grow', with each new update/release. And Android is not immune from this tendency to expand...
...for example... I have a 3 year old HTC Wildfire, running Android 2.2.1 FroYo... I just use it as a spare 'phone these days. And it still works pretty good as such.
...but Android fits comfortably into it's allocated system partition of just 250Mb, with 50.28Mb's to spare! That's megabytes... not gigabytes!!! And that's not just pure Android either... it also includes HTC's Sense 'skin'. All in less than a quarter of a gig!
Today, Android devices are measured in gigabytes, not megabytes... I don't have the second generation Nexus 7 2013, but I would hazard a guess that the system partition is larger than 640Mb. I wonder how long it will be, before Android devices start shipping with NAND storage measured in terabytes...
Anyway, back on topic... removing stuff from /system is not a good idea, as it will interfere with any future OTA updates... assuming of course, Google see fit to grace the old Nexus 7 with any further updates after KitKat.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Umm, GedBlake, given that the largest size Nexus 7 2013 is 32gb, it would be impossible for the system partition to be 640gb. I don't know exactly since I don't own one, but it's probably around 1gb. I doubt that we'll ever get as high as terabytes for flash storage... There will probably be a new technology by then!

Hi, masterslacker...
Yep, you're right. My mistake... for some reason, I had it in my head when I wrote my post, that system was measured in gigabytes and not megabytes. Not quite sure where I got that from. That post has now been corrected. It also means that, as you say, the possibility of Android devices ever shipping with terabytes of storage are very unlikely indeed.
Thanks for the correction.

I am using Kitkat 4.4.2 and the same situation. But I want more ROM space to flash some mod (WALKMAN and Launcher Port) but they required more System ROM. What about the best solution? Can I delete/uninstall some apps, or increase/extend my ROM space by some trick?
Thanks.
I posted a "top 40 by space" list for 4.4.2 stock in this post
I didn't really give any recommendations, but I would certainly avoid deleting any library files. How about removing these apps?
app/QuickOffice.apk 12,919,557 bytes
app/Hangouts.apk 10,903,908 bytes
app/Chrome.apk 10,417,331
app/YouTube.apk 7,531,998
app/Maps.apk 7,455,155
and maybe "Magazines", "Books", "Currents", too?
Certainly Chrome, YouTube, and Maps can be installed as market apps if you want to use them, but don't want them installed as "System" apps. I don't know about the others listed above (apparently some apps won't function correctly when you re-install the .apk as user/market apps).
If you do this kind of thing by hand, you probably also want to delete the:
1) corresponding Dalvik Cache entries in /cache/dalvik-cache/
2) corresponding application data folder in /data/data/
3) corresponding stuff in /data/app-lib/
before you re-install the .apk into /data/app.
Obviously, modding a Stock ROM will quite possibly break the update-ability (use of OTAs). But that's nor really a big surprise.
Make a full Nandroid backup before you start, name it in a meaningful way (so you know what it is in a couple months) and get a copy of it off the tablet.
good luck
I'd like to know why people are moaning about there being "only" 10.7GB available space on the 16GB model. Samsung are one of only a few companies to still give us MicroSD card slots to expand memory. We can put ALL our music, ALL our videos, ALL our photos and SOME of our apps onto MicroSD so stop complaining! There's not many manufacturers that let you do that these days.

dude no permission to install on ext-card since android4.0 ICS (it s not for KK)
and it has ~10GB.
on demo units thr was something about unpacked 5 and mwc and ... so first of all we saw report about 8GB internal by mistake
then new reports shows it has 10GB
source
Yeah those demo units were set up for the event so had less available space. The retail units will have 10GB+.
As for permissions, the S4 on 4.3 allows app to sd. I assume it will be the same for 4.4 on the S4 otherwise all the links will become broken. Samsung implement the feature since Google stopped doing so.
I have a Mega 6.3 on 4.2.2 and that has app to sd.

I believe the developer has to code there app specifically to allow for the APP Data to be moved to the SD Card, the actual APP has to stay on internal memory. At least thats how I understand it is supposed to work.
The main thing is that pictures/videos/music can go on the SD card as in reality that is what takes up the majority of the space on my device. The rest of the internal memory can be used for games and apps, 10gb is enough for 3-4 of those large games like San Andreas. If you need to keep more than 3-4 of those games on your device at a time, you should invest in the 32gb model or invest in a 32GB Nexus 7.
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
Kitkat uses memory/storage differently.10gb is plenty if you dont play any good games.
A lot of the best games are 1-3gb in size, and moving the app and game data to the micro sd card may not be possible with this version of kitkat? need clarification is this can be done, although not all games use the memory card.
If the 32gb model is readily available then this is the way to go.
Good Luck with that! Until we see a retail version NO ONE knows what a retail version will have available space wise. The fact that you SAW 8.56gb AVAILABLE at MWC means that is what you should expect. Especially with Samsung, they aren't known for removing stuff, but for adding stuff.
That's why the Note 3 is still the way to go. 3gb ram and 32gb is the smallest configuration.
OK I've Googled it and actually seen what Google are up to That is really bad. They want to get rid of external storage because "people are confused with it". How thick are some people?? If they're confused, don't use it. I love having the choice of using something or not using something. Google gets more and more like Apple each day, forcing things on people.
There is no way I'm updating my Mega 6.3 to KitKat as I have lots of apps on the SD card at the minute.
We'll be able to still store videos, music and photos on the SD card presumably? Will photos and videos taken with a phone running KitKat be able to save them directly to SD card, or will we be forced to use "The Cloud"?

32Gb or 64gb should be the options. Like the iFruit. (OMG wash my mouth out with Lifebuoy! )

The MWC unit showed only 8.56 GB because some demo videos, apps, etc has been stored in the internal memory for demo purposes and occupied about 2.33 GB of internal space. Out of the box you will get 10.7 GB in the retail version and the MWC device also had the same.

It literally had a MWC 2014 folder with 2GB of data lol. Check Sammobile.
