Hi All,
I'd like to start a thread listing USB DACs that are compatible with the Galaxy S3.
Here's what I've got or have read about:
Compatible:
Headphonia USB DAC cable (was very excited about this one!)
HRT MusicStreamer II
Fiio E7
Incompatible:
Fiio E17
M-Audio Transit
Can anyone add to this list?
Good thread. I can't add to the list right now, but I'll be watching with interest.
Froot loop,
What file types did you play with the HRT MusicStreamer II? I'm interested in playing 16/44.1 and 24/96 FLAC files. Have you verified these or would you mind testing it for me?
Thanks in advance.
I just got my USB OTG adapter and am happy to report that my HeadRoom Total BitHead headphone amplifier is compatible.
Are these DACs much better than the Wolfson DAC already in the SGS3?

Froot Loop Awesome Thread....I have a quick question does the E7 have EQ?
I am very interested on the Fiio products. At the moment I have been leaning towards the E11 for my laptop and occasional use with the SG3, but after reading this the E7 makes more sense as It should reproduce a better sound from my laptop as well. My IEM's are a bit bass heavy when listening on my laptop...on the S3 I have installed an EQ that has allowed me to shape the sound curve closer to my liking. My IEM are the Thinksound TS02+mic..they are really good, but depending on source, Low tones can dominate.
Thanks for the feedback!

Much less "noise" at the very least.. A whole enclosure just for a DAC would (generally) > one packed in a phone/ipod/etc
And I thought that the S3 didn't have the Wolfson?
That being said, I'll try to test my ObjectiveDAC if I can find some sort of micro to mini usb solution...

So, has anyone tried to connect a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter)
I just ordered a FIIO Q1 From Amazon, and just wondering if it will work at all.
Thanks in advance.

I tried a co-worker's DACmagic the other day and it certainly worked flawlessly and transparently (no fuss, just plugged it in and it diverted audio instantly).
However, I couldn't notice any difference at all between straight output from X Force and from the DAC back-to-back (as far as possible) with my Sony MDR-100AAP headphones.
I'm assuming that this reflects well on the X Force in-built DAC rather than poorly on the DACmagic (given universal praise of that USB DAC as far as I can find)

What kind of files did you use? The main reason i wanted the DAC is for lossless files through Tidal. So, if the built in DAC on our Force is that good, guess I'll be returning Fiio's DAC.

that is a small caveat; I tried it with the "high quality" download from Play Music, so not lossless, however I still stand by there being barely any perceptible difference - particularly considering the DACmagic (and others) bills itself as improving even "SD" audio...
I would consider myself "picky about sound quality" rather than full-on audiophile, but I know what to listen out for - and what I (personally) consider good sound quality - and I would say the X Force headphone output with the MDR-100AAP sounds great to me. Better than the headphone output on the SoundBlaster X-Fi Ti in my PC, actually. In other words, I don't consider the difference with the X Force to be worth ~$100 of USB DAC
Then again, I'm also sceptical of the difference between high bit-rate MP3/AAC/OGG vs. FLAC in the first place, so maybe I'm just not the right kind of person :silly:
Of course I'd recommend you try back-to-back with and without the FIIO when you get it and decide for yourself (presumably you'd do that anyway!)! After seeing the size and weight of the DACmagic (USB powered, no battery!), I was considering getting one for myself until I tried it and determined that it just wasn't worth the £50 to £100 they typically retail for! I may change my mind in the future, though...

Well, call me crazy but I do hear the difference between Spotify and Tidal, in terms of streaming services, so i guess I'll update this post when my Fiio arrives.
Also, did you use the DACmagic as an amp, or as DAC with USB OTG, or both amp and DAC?

I guess for me it's mostly a case of the difference not being worth the cost increase!
The DACmagix XS (the specific model) is a DAC - as in it only has micro-USB on one end and 3.5mm jack on the other, nothing else other than volume up/down buttons!
I've been tempted to try Tidal premium for a while, but again the cost/worth tug-o-war comes in vs. my current only £7.99 per month for Play Music...
Just got an X Force in the UK and can confirm it works with my Chord Mojo DAC under Marshmallow.
Hi
I'm looking at options to get better sound on my S8. Does anyone know if the HTC U11 3.5mm adaptor with the built in DAC will be compatible with the S8 and if it will improve audio listening through spotify?
Has anyone tried this?
The adaptor is only £10 to buy so could be a cheap way to get better audio.
I'm not interested in rooting as I find samsung pay and secure folder useful so Viper isn't an option for me.

I currently use a Fiio E11 headphone amp. Its a little bit of bulk but the sound quality is night and day different. I am in the market for a new one soon as this thing is a good few years old and taken a beating, so I don't know if there is something better / smaller out now, but as and when I start looking I will update with any cool options I find
Funny, only reason I didn't switch from HTC 10 to U11 (and am considering S8) is the lack of normal headphone jack and that freaking dongle, lol

Just did a side by side comparison of S8 and HTC 10, on the same source, using the same Neutron player with the same settings (after calibrating S8 to my ears). Sad story - S8 is noticeably worse...

I just wish I could get my FiiO Q1 to work with my S8. I've tried the included USB C to USB adaptor that came with the phone, an aftermarket one, and a USB C to micro USB and none of them have worked. I might have to try this dongle.
Has anyone tried to compare the audio quality of OP6 via headphones jack with that of OP6T via the dongle? Just trying to find out if OnePlus uses another DAC chip in Type C port or the one in SD845.

The Type C dongle is passive the DAC is in the phone and not the dongle whihch is dissapointing and the quality is around the same as OP6 better off trying to source a 1st gen Google dongle or find a brand that makes a good one.

Exactly. The audio quality out of the dongle is so disappointing. It makes my FiiO F9 Pro soundstage sound narrower that it's supposed to. That's why I'm currently deciding whether if I should buy a FiiO Q1 MK II. But I never tried any of these amps before, I don't know if there would be a substantial improvement over the dongle

If there is a DAC in the phone, does plugging in a cable like this (which as a DAC built-in) tell the phone to send a non-processed signal straight out to the cable (so that the cable can do the d/a conversion)???

I'm not entirely sure how it works but the Type C bullets by OnePlus have a custom DAC in them and they're made for the OP6T

Is there a way to confirm which DAC it's using? I'm not doubting it's passing audio from phone to your headphones but is the D/A conversion still being done on the phone and sending an analog signal thru your active cord OR it the cord actively doing the D/A conversion? Is there a way to tell?

I read it in a Reddit thread where it was mentioned that if you're using a dongle with a built-in DAC, it will use the DAC in the dongle instead of the one in the phone. I'd assume it's the same for other DAC as well. https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/9uu3jy/oneplus_6t_has_an_analog_dac_inside_the_usbc_port/
Edit: After testing for many times (I hope the port life won't reduce after those tests), I can conclude that the phone is using the external DAC. Noticeable difference in the soundstage
Then theoretically op6t with fiio k1 should work, right? I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 598
I don't use any external DAC. I stream in the car, and I use V4A for audio processing, and it sounds incredible.
Get yourself one of these https://www.nexum-design.com/aqua - couldn't recommend them enough. I have one and it is absolutely the best 'dongle' you can get. Battery does take a hit because of the integrated amp, but well worth it...
Hi Guys;
Want to talk of the external DACs.
As we do not have jack on our phone, here a little list of compatible DAC.
Ibasso DC01 ~50$
Review
Unfortunatelly Ibasso says that there's some compatibility issues with Galaxy Series including Note.
It works very well on mine. N975F
Ibasso DC02 ("unbalanced version" of the DC01) ~50$
SMSL Idea ~85$
Review
EarStudio ES100 ~99$
Review
Audioquest DragonFly Cobalt ~299$
Review
Hidizs Sonata HD-D ~30$
Review
I've an Ibasso DC01 and it's wonderfull. I never had a sound like this with a smartphone.
Do you use one too ?

I use the Fiio BTR3 as well, great little DAC/AMP especially once you enable the LDAC codec in dev options and stream HiFi audio with a source like TIDAL. Paired it with 1MORE Quad Driver earbuds that run 32Ohm impedance which the BTR3 is able to output.

Yup, although I am using Etymotic Er4XR with this. I unfortunately am using Apple Music, stuck in their ecosystem. But sounds great so far with LDAC!
Question, do you have the ability to change the LDAC settings to highest quality in dev options? I tried but it keeps reverting to best effort?
I have Hidizs Sonata using exynos model. Best sound Ive ever heard using my Westone W60's. Even better than my previous LG V30. Large soundstage and very loud. I didn't expect this but I'm very happy about it.
I found a cheap $7 adapter/DAC and it plays nicely with my KZ earbuds (supports 24bit/384). Before I was looking into the UP4, BTR5, etc. But for now I'll hold off buying more expensive gear.

I have a pair of se845s as well. I just bought the Shure usb-c to mmcx cable which obviously has a DAC built in. It's a beautiful thing. Hello everybody.
I would like to buy an adapter from usb-c to 3.5mm earphone plug. I see it is a little bit more complicated than I thought- There are adapters with DAC chip, without a chip, others won't fit Samsung, etc.
I just want an adapter because of the lack of 3.5mm socket and keep listening music like I did so far. I would like to have the option to use this plug with none-Samsung phones ,too.
What kind of adapter and brands do you recommend to buy ?
Thanks in advance,
Arye

I'm not surprised, given that it's 10x the price of the Samsung one!
Samsung's is flimsy... it doesn't inspire longevity confidence.
The great Samsung flagship missing 3.5 mm jack fubar continues... lame.
I advise you to acquire an adapter that allows you to charge the phone at the same time.
So an adapter with double inlet, USB-C for charging and 3.5mm Audio

Presumably because it does not incorporate a DAC. The only adaptors that work with the Note 10+ are those with a DAC in them.

I advise you to acquire an adapter that allows you to charge the phone at the same time.
So an adapter with double inlet, USB-C for charging and 3.5mm Audio

Yeah it's tricky. Worse no clue how good that one is.
It was much better with a known internal phone DAC and the 3.5 mm jack. The Note 4 was a better audio platform. WTF?
Samsung really dropped the ball Special Olympics style...
Whatever the dongle DAC is I doubt it's a 32 bit Burr-Brown. Ha!
