Has anyone done back to back tests of using Power Saving mode through a whole charge vs. not?
I have done this, I was able to increase my battery life by more than 1 hour. I did have to disable the background screen setting however, it didn't work great with the stock email app, and my emails appeared blank, because it would change the text to white, but not change the background to black.
I'm in the process of doing this
it worked reasonably well, probably about 20% or so improvement. I then uninstalled a bunch of bloat and lowered brightness more and have it at 2 days with light use.
I'm trying to figure this out as well. Although I can very easily tell the difference with power savings on, it DEFINITELY takes a performance hit. If it nets less than an hour improvement, totally not worth the performance hit.
I was able to make it all through today and finished with 28%, all with power savings off. I think the auto brightness tends to keep the screen a little too bright for indoor settings, so I turned that off and went with a nice low level.
I might try power savings without the CPU limit option checked. What power savings is applied to the screen? Is it just refresh rate and brightness?
I noticed a difference when using screen power saving. The description says it causes slightly lower frame rates which I haven't actually noticed. But I did notice lower battery usage from the screen.
I didn't want to touch the CPU savings because I don't really want to sacrifice performance to save battery.

Before the battery dies I feel like it drains alot of battery was wondering whats the most it can stay on for.Im starting to think 2 hours.
It's much more than 2 hours...I remember reading in a few threads people have gotten 7-8 hours of display time. If your phone is dying in 2 hours of display time there is something seriously wrong with it. 2 hours probably brings me to 75%
7-8 hours with the screen on the entire time I dunno thats crazy I wish it lasted that long im gonna test it soon as i get a full charge
Yeah, my impression is that 4-5 hours of actual screen use time is average. It's the standby times that really matter, in terms of variation in batt life.

I agree 4-5 hours on auto brightness is probably the average, depending on what you're doing, obviously. I've hit 10+ hours with the screen on while using the Kindle app with white on black and minimum brightness.
I usually get around 2 hours max at 25% brightness...
You guys must be doing something wrong - like something wrong with your clock. I can play Angry Birds for more than 2hrs. Obviously, that's screen on, plus significant CPU/GPU usage.

If you're only getting 2 hrs, there's something wrong with your phone.
I needed to drain my battery completely last week so I cranked the brightness all the way, turned on GPS and 3G, set it to never sleep and set Angry Birds running and it took well over 2 hours to drain completely, and that was from 80% charged.
I got 3 hours with farm story open entire time I let the phone sit 10 percent left lowest brightness I did everything else to save battery but when it comes to display I'm at a lose any ideas

Just for some reference,
I have 50% battery now,
72% Is display and its time on 1h42m
Sounds normal isn't it?
Though I don't really like it
I was looking at system panel farm story was using 100% cpu the time it was on maybe I'll try with angery birds and see what happens 3 hours tho is bad id be happy with 5 at least

So does anyone have any idea how to prolong the amount of battery used while the display is on? I think someone suggested clearing the battery cache but I'm not sure how to do that...

"Reconditioning" your battery will not make it last longer. At all. It will EVENTUALLY (after several complete charge cycles) make your reading of the battery level more accurate across the whole discharge cycle. Wiping battery stats is, for the most part, a placebo. The only time you should wipe your battery stats is if you flash to a drastically different ROM/kernel or if you get a new battery.
If you want to get less drain from the screen itself your only options are:
1) low brightness
2) avoid the color white. A black pixel on a SAMOLED is literally off, a white pixel consumes the most power possible and it's a sliding scale in between.
I was browsing for about 2 hours and battery dropped to 70%. Brightness is adjusted 25% or less though.

I did a comparison test between Auto brightness On and OFF. Both time have wiped battery state to just make sure it wasn't the wipe that improved battery life.
no widgets were placed, google services were up all time.
cellphone signal were pretty good. 3G all the time. -70dbm~-80dbm, sometimes was -65.
Under the same usage, I managed to get extra 20% of battery left for my phone with Auto brightness off.
Anyone wants to try this?
btw my screen brightness was set 50%, so i'm not cheating
Most people already knows about this. if you want to save the battery turn off the auto brightness

I usually run all my devices at 25% brightness. Then again, I only ever need a phone to last about 11 hours at a time.

maybe is a software issue so that the sensor is ON all the time and using the cpu to calculate the ambient light condition?

I think the main issue, is that auto brightness sets the brightness too high for most conditions (at least in terms of usability vs. battery life). I keep mine at 35% most the time.
And this has nothing to do with CM7 in particular, this is true on any ROM, including stock.
I kept my phone standby for 9 1/2 hours with Wi-Fi ,sync opened and in that time my 10% was drained......then I kept the phone on standby for the same time period and this time power saving mode was on and Wi-Fi and sync were off but the battery drained was the same 10%........... so does this power saving mode really works or is it just........

For me is working just fine, I get like 15-20% more battery time with Power Saving mode ON
You can't possibly notice it when your phone is in standby whole time. You can notice your battery drains slower when you actually you using your phone. For example it lowers max cpu clock, which means if you use your phone, your max cpu clock will be lower than default values. in standby its always low so it doesnt affect battery drain.
* it depends on your power saving settings.

that's the reason it craps out when playing dead trigger or asphalt7. That time I switch off PS mode. Other than that it helps in the sense that it allows the battery to drain slower.
I really haven't found any use for the power saving feature. It slows down games a lot and it doesn't have any use when the device is idle. Dilemma, dilemma.
Power saving works wonders for me.
Try having endomondo recording workouts and listening to music with power saving off and on and then come back and tell us it doesn't work

Power saving mode is awesome everyday at work before i start my shift i leave my phone on power save mode. I make calls and use whats app with power save mode on. Whatsapp i just switch on data but leaving power save on. Anyway my battery is still 70 to 80 percent by the end of my shift..
So maybe it's just your phone for me this is the best feature ever.
Power saving is crap slowing the device as hell
even the app drawer become slow and its stutter as **** with PS :silly:
but its good if someone need to save some battery
Power saving mode does not work for me too.
My S3 was slow as hell and lag most of time.
Yeah same here

If your device was slow it means that PS is working just well, doesn't you think? Mine is fast enougb, even with power saver turned on. Most of time I have it enabled.

Only problem I had with power saving and auto brightness on at the same time is little flicker/stutter of screen after wake up,for which I can't find anywhere weather is it normal or not. Other than that it does miracles.
The battery on this phone is generally good, but some things drain the battery more than I think they should. Standby drain is great (3-5% overnight) but the screen murders the battery. It drops 1% every 4-5 minutes of light tasks such as browsing social media and Chrome, but the drain gets much worse with anything that's more demanding on the processor. For example, 23 minutes of gaming on my PS1 emulator killed 10% of battery, and just 13 minutes of Crossy Road killed 6%.
Is there any way to improve battery life when the screen is on, or is this normal power consumption for a 2k display like this one? For reference, I have it set on auto brightness at the lowest setting to save battery already. Also, my phone gets 4-5 hrs SOT with moderate usage and maybe 30min-1hr of gaming. If it's the latter, I'd take a 1080p screen any day for better battery life...

Turn off auto brightness. Other than that, the screen is going to draw a fixed amount of power. Also, resolution has very little to do with how much power the screen uses, it's all panel size and brightness.

Pretty much the only knob you have is display brightness.

I thought resolution has everything to do with how much power the screen uses? The way I understood it a screen with a given resolution has the same amount of pixels whether it's 5.5" or 5.7" or some other size, hence phones with different size screens but the same resolution having different PPI's.

I turn it on only when I'm outside. Aside from affecting power draw due to brightness, does auto brightness also draw extra battery from having to operate the light sensor constantly as well?
Other than that, I've already been doing everything you guys have suggested. Do you all experience the same type of drain that I do?
The backlight is the primary power user in the screen. It doesn't care if there is 1 pixel or 5 million. The GPU will use more power at higher resolutions, but a 5.5" FHD screen will use nearly the same power as a 5.5" 4K screen.
Sent from my DROID Turbo 2
But OLED displays such as the one on the Turbo 2 don't have backlights, so the higher the resolution, the more pixels the battery has to light up and the more it drains the battery?
The pixels are smaller, and there is less power use per pixel than on a lower resolution display. Will it drain more power? Yes, but the amount is likely negligible.
What I would recommend
I know a little about a lot, When it comes to Android phones and phones in general,
The auto brightness feature always has an effect on battery life I always tell people it is much better to set this manually and to change it when it's needed. Also more modern phone os's allow this setting to be toggled quite easily. As to what screen panel uses more power I don't know a lot about that but I would have to agree with the idea that the higher the resolution the more power it draws. Good luck to you and hopefully we see marshmallow soon around the globe!
Okay. I've also noticed that the screen drains power a lot slower once battery level is below 30%. Has anyone else experienced this? Regardless, I'll calibrate my battery today and report back if it makes any difference or not.
You could also try Lux, it has a lot more options when it comes to auto adjusting the screen.
I am just absolutely STUNNED at the battery life on this thing. 46hrs total and 6hrs SOT on one charge, and I still had 5% left (probably could've got another hour of total time on and another 1/2 hour SOT). Pretty damn great if you ask me. It lasted me 2 full work days!
Battery Life pics= http://imgur.com/a/FhyGW
I do have some tricks though, maybe this can help yall. At around 10-11pm (an hour or 2 before bed) I put on power saving mode, bc at that time I am not using my phone much. I also activate and keep on power saving mode at 20% until I need to charge. My PSM settings are: -10% decrease brightness, screen resolution= HD, CPU Speed Limiter= on, Background network usage= on (turn off for even more superb idle battery life), Always on Display= off. Lastly, I have a Tasker profile that will turn auto brightness off, and my brightness way down whenever I am connected to WiFi, and I believe that helps as well.
I've had the GS3, GS4, GS5, GS6 & now GS8. The GS8 is by far my favorite and in a league of it's own IMO. How's your battery life on your Sprint GS8+?!
Especially if you don't install facebook. What a battery turd.

You can use METAL or METAL PRO, much better, full functionality, none of the battery drain.
