Hi everyone,
The increase in speed and overall performance of the HD2 is truly impressive, even when upgrading from a capable device like the Raphael.
Still, when sifting through the various threads, I see more and more users either complaining about the speed of stock ROMs and/or praising custom ROMs for their performance.
I got my device with a stock ROM dated from Dec-09 (don't know the exact build cause I flashed it immediately ), and performance was a dream. I've tried a couple of cooked ROMs on top of it, and each one performed similarly: very responsive and incredibly fast.
That's when I started thinking: just how fast is really fast then? In other words: what makes a ROM appear fast? Is it how smooth you flip through the Manila tabs, load and scroll through web pages, install an application, copy files, play a video etc.? For me, it's all of it (well, kind of). And my Leo responds almost instantly whatever I want it to do which makes it a dream device to use.
Just curious to hear your opinion/experience on that.
Cheers.
In my opinion the Manila Part is really making the thing. Fast Manila means Fast Rom for me. And I like good results on my CorePlayer Benchmarks
Thats about what makes it feel "fast" for me.
whatever we get we always want more, human natures greed streak!
so yeah it is fast but until it moves faster than our brains react then people will not be happy!
me included.....
Fast manila
But according to me the problem with leo is not the speed or performance
in which there is no comparision at all
the basic prob. Lies is battery
so we want a rom with radio included best for least amount of battery consumption which i hav noticed lasts for less thn a day when ever htc sense is activated and of normal routine use
For me increases in speed are less noticeable than decreases. So when something does improve speed I don't notice it all that much and if I do, my mind quickly gets used to it. But if I do something that decreases speed it's immediately and forever noticeable.
I believe it depends on your aspect. I mean, can you catch the difference between the two sport cars when they are at the limit of their velocity like 300km/h and 310km/h with your senses. I can't
But could you measure it? of course yes.
So i think, it depends on which side are you stay.
For me it feels fast when i can scroll through the manila tabs really smoothly and fast

Definitely...
Recently I was upgrading my good old Kaiser, I totally know what you mean
With the HD2, it's pretty difficult to make it slow, so I don't really think there is that speed aspect left now.
With ROMs, there's much less performance, much more about the features you want.
There are a few roms I have tried and noticed sense occasionally lag, and it instantly makes me change to a different rom. I know the phone is capable of being smooth so I wont put up with it not being.
For me, Sense must be fast, but opening the usual things like emails must be near instant too.
Fast = instant, no waiting, < 2 seconds to launch *any* app. Or in other words, iPhone 3GS-like performance (at least).
Of course, features and stability are also very important must-haves in custom roms.

The iPhone does something that WM doesn't do, and that is animate to a blank screen/splash screen before actually loading anything. Lots of games have splash screens that take an age to load, whereas WM just loads the program and when it's loaded it displays full screen.
I think there are two roms that set some good stds.
Xanny's Evolution rom is one of the fastest Manila Roms. Very quick and snappy in Manilla. Outside it is also good.
Kholk Eugneia Rom with the 1GHZ rom is average in some areas but some apps it is seriously fast. TomTom loads in a flat 2 secs with Aussie maps. Compared to 3.5 secs for most other roms.
If Xanny tries the 1Ghz hack then my phone might just melt.

That speed you are seeing is not from the 1ghz hack it is from Extendir which increases the speed of File systen read time. So opening some programs will be faster. The down side if it is not properly configured the Notes will not sync and cause other problems accessing the storage card like music etc.
fast is when, you listin to music+go to the setup installation+ browse websites
"fast" is very subjective judgement. i like to see my HD2 make smooth transitions from screen to screen and "clouds to moove smooth".
talking about fast in program loading only points out your unknowing of how stuff works expecialy when you compare things to iPhone.
fast with other name might be Android, which really works on phone raw power and not some cheap tricks to make it look smooth.
WWWROEOEOEOEMMMM that's fast!
Strange.
The 1ghz rom had quite slow disk access (SPB Bench) compared to Xanny's
However the 1Ghz Rom's CPU marks were faster than Xanny's
On average Xanny's rom is the least laggy of any rom. Very nice and snappy.

OK, from what I've seen so far, I conclude that it's mainly Manila that needs to be smooth and snappy to make the ROM appear fast. Makes sense, cause everything else is already super fast on this wonderful device.
Been on Cyanogen basically the majority of my android life. looking to try something new.. wanted eclair but there's so many no time to flash each individually.. which one is really the "best/stable" ROM out now?
Unfortunately you will get nothing but fanboys and each their own opinion. I personally tried xRom, King, and OpenEclair and must say so far the fastest, more stable, is OpenEclair. I've even gotten faster times than on Cyanogen.
Open Eclair eh? hmm thanks i'll keep that in mind.
On it now seems nice, only reason I kept cyanogen though is because of the bluetooth..
edit; open eclair isnt meant for mytouch is it.. stuff doesnt display centered?
it is meant for both i believe, check issue tracker via thread to see if maybe its an issue with the mt3g or maybe you just need to reflash.

I've tried a few Eclair builds, and none were anywhere near smooth. Even had one on day before yesterday. Also video recorder was borked and youtube was broken.
Super-D is stable. Completely to the best of my knowledge, on my phone anyway. For the last few weeks it has performed flawlessly.
Before that I was using a non-Super-D and experienced FC's and freezes.
Is OpenEclair as smooth and fast as super-D 1.8? I'm not a Fanboi and will gladly try a better ROM. But I do need everything to work. At least basic features.
Does the video camera work on OpenEclair? Is YouTube broken on OpenEclair?

So far on any 2.0+ rom is going to have a broken YouTube and Video Camera due to no drivers available yet in the AOSP. So unfortunately you do lose on that aspect. However yes to the speed of SuperD, they both clocked identical speed. Check the thread and read the latest posts, they are discussing this now.

I'm reading it now. It looks like they're doing some MB/sec type of benchmarks, and FLOPS and stuff.
I may have to flash it myself to check responsiveness, but I don't want to be disappointed.
Have you ever used Super-D 1.8?
There is a difference between MFLOPS and the smoothness of the GUI and managing multitasking and opening and closing apps.
Can you honestly tell me that OpenEclair is as smooth as Super-D?
Also I saw one guy a few pages back who had his screen black out and freeze when he unmounted his SD card, and someone else had a problem with MT3G rebooting when he plugged in the USB cable. And it's reported that aGPS doesn't work.
Here's an ugly one: "Anyone else having issues where the home icons, folders, and widgets disappear when the screen rotates? I have to restart the phone to get the icon/folders/widgets back.
I have seen this at random with the WG and CM builds...but happens consistently with the OE 1.1.1."
Most posts I've read there so far say it's showing potential but not yet a daily driver.
Well i havent had any those issues but then again i could just be lucky, the only thing is i use OE 1.1 not 1.1.1 because 1.1 uses JIT which makes it a very smooth and faster for me, transitions and apps. But JIT is considered unstable for some so 1.1.1 pulled it out.
My only suggestion is just to flash it like you said and try it out, if you dont like nandroid back.

The rom I am using does video playback fine. Youtube and also videos that I already had on my sd card work great. Video capture does, however, result in a FC.
Even with launcher pro there is a noticeable lag switch between windows or scrolling around not found in any other nand build i tried, but only with mdj's. Is anyone else getting this weird problem?

I think MDJ's 2.3 so popular b'cause he's the first one (i think) who perfect 2.3..

And I believe he's still the only one with a CM7-based ROM. Haven't been that active here the past weeks though so may have missed something.
MDJ is like a household brand. Typically he is quick at releasing updates and new ideas. Generally his ROMs are also Overclocked, which makes them "faster". I have found that there tends to be more minor 'glitches' in his releases, (not to the point that they are unusable though, and most go unnoticed), mainly because he is so quick at incorporating new ideas. Generally, if you want a ROM that is 'cutting edge' you use MDJ's Roms, if you want a stock look and feel rom, you don't.

Indeed my sentiments exactly.
My experience of MDJ's CM7 rom was mainly juddery ui and juddery launcher, no matter what I used. It was like someone cut the frame rate down to like 20 fps when moving around the rom. Everything loaded fast, and games seemed to run ok, but the UI was a complete mess for me.
I've now moved to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909096 with MDJ's 10.4 OC Kernel ripped from his CM7 rom and I couldn't be happier performance wise. Of course I'm missing the CM settings, and Facebook sync doesn't work, but the UI is now a pleasure to navigate round again, and most importantly, it's as fast as his CM7 rom CPU performance wise (measured with Linpack).
I have not had any lag with MDJ 2.6 (nand) since I switched... You might have experienced conflicting app since Gingerbread is not fully supported by ALL of the existing market apps.
JDMS (SD Card version) I used was great and fast but MDJs is much smoother
Hi to all.
This post because I've always experienced some lags with any keybord ( IME, Swift, Gingerbread, etc )
After the installation the speed was very high, but after few days there were lags here and there.
Any advice? Is this behaviour common to you too?
Now I'm running Froyd Villain 1.6.2 ...
Thank you
Pich
Many people from what I have read they have this problem with gingerbread, I am one of them..
Beside the fact that our Hero hardware is old, we just need to wait until a better and stable release will be available..
Thank you for your answer.
Yer Our hardware is old ... :-(
Anyway I have a Froyo Rom, and the problem was present in Android 2.1 and 1.6 too...
It happens to me aswell, it annoys me alot, even overclocked to 710Mhz, obviously its not as laggy as 528Mhz but still laggy, so i think i am going to get a different phone like an iPhone

I found out that also depends on the rom that you flash, everyone phone is different.
When I used to have Android 2.2 with Froydvillain, many people in the forum said that it was awesome and that the battery life was amazing, for me was not, and it was terribly laggy.
After I switched to floyo, a new Hero was born, It was flawless and the performance outstanding, I didn't experienced any lag or issue and I kept it for many weeks...
So as far as I know, for me it could also depend on what you flash sometimes, I guess is just simple as that..
i use the handcent sms ...with the tasty froyo 1.2, and is also quite laggy...
being a rom flash addict, i have tried most of the roms posted here. only overclocking seems to help slightly, though the lag wasnt that bad on the original sense rom
Swiftkey with any AOSP/CM based roms works good for me
Yeah... I have the same problem too. I use HTC-ime mod on Elelinux GB rom, but it lags from time to time randomly.
It is very irritating to see every single 2.3.3 theme spammed with:
*where is the link? how to install it? you stink give us ROM now! Why is my screen al red? Why is my mother making me pay for my COOKED diner...*
So I've imagined this thread REVIEW ONLY. So post your reviews, no questions, no comments. We can open another thread questions/comments for this thread.
So I've tought some guidelines for reviews that everyone is asking, having problem with or just wish to know:
What doesn't work? (some people mentioned accelerometers, animations)
How did you install it? (give simple explanation, method you used, with or without bootloaders, etc)
Are there any problems so far? (beside if something is not working, FC-s, app incompability, etc)
General performances? (how fast is the rom, compare it with ROM you used before)
GPS? (no explanation necessary...)
Battery life? (ompare it with ROM you used before, what is the magnitude of battery drain?
Anything else.
I hope this thread is well accepted, I truly believe it is the best way to get all data everyone needs.
Thanx, CROrION
flashed stock + jvk bootloaders + speedmod k13d with heimdall
went into recovery and flashed the rom kitchen beta
then without rebooting rooted in cwm recovery
rebooted.
3D does not work properly
Browser is nicer
Smoother/faster
Theme is a little different
Other minor things I forget
This rom is still beta, samsung would be stupid to release it publicly
What doesn't work? (some people mentioned accelerometers, animations)
Nothing detected. Screen off old-TV-like animation is just a missing feature, removed by Samsung, not a bug.
How did you install it? (give simple explanation, method you used, with or without bootloaders, etc)
Odin + 502.pit + repartition (bootloader upgraded)
Are there any problems so far? Lower WiFi sensitivity/range than in JPY 2.2.1 stock ROM, probably new modem uses lower power to save battery at the cost of range.
General performances? (how fast is the rom, compare it with ROM you used before)
Fastest ever, some minor lags when installing multiple apps from the market, but acceptable.
GPS? (no explanation necessary...)
OK, as good as latest 2.2.1 stock roms
Battery life? (ompare it with ROM you used before, what is the magnitude of battery drain?
Battery life has never been better (only option changed: WiFi Sleep Policy, pure stock rom).
Anything else.
I installed it yesterday with 512 pit file and its ok its faster than js8 in my opinion and bit ram hungry still but not as much as jv1 was useing tottaly stock no mods and quite happy i expect it has disapounted many as it still looks likes froyo also had bit lag in gallery had no fc or major issues seems stable and useable thanks samsung

For now, fastest ROM ever. No lags detected. Top bar is green-gray, looks better than in older version of GB. I've installed using odin, pit 512 and repartition.
3D Not Working Properly
No Ad Hoc Wifi Support
Still Lags
Many Apps gives force close
---
2.2/ 2.2.1 is still better than this
Battery life is great ! Only had 2% in 8 hours.
Really smooth and lagfree (even before the hacked kernel from supercurio)
Like this ROM and will keep it for now
10 charrrr
What doesn't work? (some people mentioned accelerometers, animations)
- Everything Working accelerometer etc...just Gameloft Nova shows white screen, rest of all Gameloft 3D games RF2011,SC, MC2, BIA, Asphalt6 & many more (10+) works perfectly & better than any froyo. Could not install angry birds from market had to unmount ext SD, install & remount again. This way it works fine...
How did you install it? (give simple explanation, method you used, with or without bootloaders, etc)
- Odin + 512.pit + repartition (bootloader upgraded sbl version) + check bootloader upgrade in odin
Are there any problems so far? Lower WiFi sensitivity/range than in JPY 2.2.1 stock
- probably new modem uses lower power to save battery at the cost of range since wifi signal is slightly weaker but everything runs fine so no big deal.
General performances? (how fast is the rom, compare it with ROM you used before)
- Fastest ever, some minor lags when installing multiple apps from the market, but acceptable. So far its been 12 hours....not a single FC or problem, already installed like 40 apps from market....
GPS? (no explanation necessary...)
- As good as latest 2.2.1 stock roms
Battery life? (ompare it with ROM you used before, what is the magnitude of battery drain?
- Battery life has never been better (only option changed: WiFi Sleep Policy to sleep when screen off, pure stock rom).
