Can any Google i/o attendees confirm, whether usb modems work or not?
As I dwell in country side India. I don't get around to wifi hot spots. Would be nice to know.
Also, if not native, please test out if it works after installing chain fire.'s stick chain app. As it adds support for usb drives(but not ntfs write)
has anyone tried yet to get a usb modem working on a nexus 7?

Hi all,
I did a few searches before this and it seems like no one else has asked about this yet. My goal is to get some type of external radio working on an Android phone in hopes to learn more about the system and possibly get a USB LTE radio talking to Android. I know most of the phones use usb Micro which supports a host protocol but I don't know if the Android system supports it.
My first goal would be to get a usb wifi dongle or 3g dongle working. My reasoning is because those have linux drivers so maybe I could try to get the driver on the android phone? Just my thoughts.
Does anyone think this is possible? Thanks for any help.
PS: I am aware that I would need an adapter to make the dongle fit to the micro usb port.
SO far I have been able to get host mode working on a nexus one. Now I need to get into adding different kernel modules compiled. Does anyone know a good guide to follow to ge me started? I did a quick google search but it didnt really turn up anything other than compile the actual Android Kernel.

currently, none of these USB 3G dongles work on the Transformer because they need drivers to work, but I guess it will be soon before someone figures out a workaround.
Best thing to do now is to get a MiFi device (D-Link & Huawei) has it. But costs a bomb about S$170 for D-link and $200+ for the Huawei one. FYI, this MiFi device is actually a mobile wireless router where you need your Data Simcard to be inserted into the device and it can be shared with other users (like a normal wireless router).
i hve the mifi device given by starhub.. but i heard that someone managed to get tbe 3g usb dongle to work on the xoom so iwas hopingit would work on the tranzformer

Someones taken the work that was done to get Huawei USB dongles working on the Folio 100 and ported it to the Acer A500.

I've tried these changes on my Transformer but I've been unable to get it working though I'm unsure if that's because the Wifi Transformer kernel doesn't contain the necessary bits or if I just haven't worked out what needs to go into the build.prop file.
I'm hoping (if no-one's cracked it before then) that the upcoming release of the 3G Transformer will add more pieces to puzzle.

But on the eepad does it necessarily require to connect to the docking station or is it possible to connect in some way directly to the tablet?

The custom port on the bottom of the transformer is (amongst other things) a USB port and people have had success using a Female to Female USB adaptor to plug devices into the USB cable ASUS supply.
Asus are also supposed to be releasing an official adaptor to allow connection of devices without needing to go via the cable.
The problem isn't really connecting the USB modem it's working out what modules and drivers and possibly kernel changes are needed to get the Transformer to recognise the modem.
im hoping someone can get it to work..
It looks like we need specific Kernel Modules for the Transformer to have any luck of getting this to work which will requires skills far beyond mine so I think for the moment we have to hope that one of the Transformer ROM devs decides this is work doing.
I'll happily put up a bounty of $30 for whoever can get 3G modems working properly on the transformer

I'm looking to get a tablet to introduce BackTrack 5 to. I don't believe this tablet has a wifi chip capable of injection, so I wanted to connect a USB wifi adapter to it (this one right here). I read in the update it's able to register the usb port for usb devices, but which exactly work without me having to create a driver? And, I'm sure there are linux drivers for said USB adapter, I assume I could take that and (easily) create one?
From what I've read so far, the USB port handles things like hard drives, keyboards and flash card readers (and not necessarily all of them).
A Wi-Fi adapter may function under Linux but you would probably have to be rooted on the device to install drivers since they are not natively included in the system build that I know of.
Backtrack 5 works fine on the A500. I'm running it right now. I've had no issues with it.

I have just added these 2 lines in "/osh/etc/network/interfaces" for DHCP autoconfiguration :

Nice to know. Ethernet might come in handy for a lot of people docking as their PCs.
I guess any other USB ethernet card that works with a normal Linux PC should work here.

First I would like to say that I'm glad that in the last few weeks i finally managed to let my heavy 15.4' 9 cell Dell Laptop on the Office and bring home the Atrix + LapDock everyday including weekends and holidays
I have what i need on my LapDock + FullUbuntu: gedit, gnome-terminal, OpenOffice, PDF readers, Psi+ (jabber client with PGP Encryption), GNUPG, Mumble Voice Chat, Firefox (with client SSL certificates ) and OpenVPN.
Everything else, like e-mail, music and video players i'll prefer running on the Android
So, i want to buy this USB -> Ethernet adapter to make it even better!
I thought buying the TrendNet but it seems somewhat bigger than other adapters that use the same "chipset" (ASIC). I also find those adapters cheaper than the TrendNet one:

It seems great but now i'm not entirely sure what's the chipset on the TrendNet: AX88772A or AX88772B?
The one i'm buying uses the AX88772B.
The difference seems to be very small, the drivers seems to be the same and the "B" version supports checksum offloading and it's intended for Low Power consumption. Here's the detailed specs of both chips:

It's really cheap, small and uses the AX88772B chipset.
But i'm not able to test yet, simply because it's not here yet
I bought using standard Air Mail that takes something like 20 days to get here in Brazil... And when it does arrive here it's going to take 10 more days (or even more) for Brazilian (Fuc***) Customs to release it for Brazilian Postal Service to finally deliver it... This sucks.
But well, i promise that as soon as I get it, i will test and put the results here.

I tried this with an Airlink 101 today. I didn't add the extra lines listed in the OP, but I did start the dhcp client manually and it got an address and webtop was happy. Does anyone know if the android portion of the phone is able to use the wired Ethernet connection? From my quick test it didn't seem like it did.
I have a much slimmer Cisco USB to Ethernet adapter that I plan to try. I used the Airlink because it was lying around on my desk doing nothing.
And with all the webtop talk starting up, this may be of interest to others.
AX88772B not working

As i said before, it uses the AX88772B chipset.
I have confirmed that and installed the driver for my MacBookPro and it's working just fine.
I have downloaded the drivers from:

It's noticeable that there is also a driver for Android but it's the source code, not the compiled kernel module.
So i think i'll will need to get the Atrix kernel source compile the driver with the headers and prey to work...
Maybe it's something with my ROM... I have updated to the latest Motorola official 2.3.6 build for Brazil.
Could you guys tell me what's the output of these two linux commands, as soon as you plug the USB device ( the last 10 lines or so):

Can't wait until they bring the webtop to CM7. It was a loss when I upgraded, but the smoothness and capabilities of a CM7 rom are worth the loss of the webtop... for now.
It's good to know that when it get's working again I can use a USB to Ethernet with the Ubuntu mod.

Don't hold ur breath.....cm9 is underway don't think webtop is gonne come yo cm7 but u can always mirror with lapdock

Would like to be able to use a usb ethernet adapater on my unaltered Atrix running 2.3.4. If I were to root, make the changes to the two lines and then unroot again, would the changes remain?
In Post 6 above there is mention of the usb ethernet adapter only working under webtop. Is there a way to make it work on the phone itself as well, i.e., for the phone browser / market / email / etc.

i have this issue also, connecting usb broadband detects it as cd-rom drive. i have zte mf627 broadband kit. ill attached screens later. dmesg result show port but has no device name.

A nearly 2 yr old dead thread just had to be brought back to the surface? esp with your results being the same as the previous member's results?
If I understand it correctly, ant+ is the same 2.4 GHz as wifi and I see there is an ant+ driver on the play store. So will ant+ networking work on the n10 (or any android 4.2 tablet) or is it something the manufacturer need to hardwire into the hardware?
I have several devices including several heart rate monitors and a bike cadence / speed sensor I would like to use with my tablets. I use them on another android device and the frequency is there... So there should be a way to get then n10 to recognize it?

The 2.4Ghz band is used by many different wireless products (ANT+, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cordless phones, car alarms etc), but they will not run on your tablet without the correct firmware and drivers to run them. The N10 does not have ANT+ firmware or drivers (there's a list of devices on the Play Store page you link to) on the hardware it includes. So yes, the manufacturer must build a device that has ANT+ built in to it.
However, you can still use ANT+ on your device. As the N10 supports the USB Host feature, you should be able to connect an ANT USB stick with the ANT USB Service (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dsi.ant.usbservice) and a USB OTG cable.
Hopefully this is a solution which works for everyone until there are more devices available with built in ANT+!

Using the otg+USB on the N10 is an option at the gym on a stationary bike or stair climber. Just have to be REAL careful about the USB port and doing any damage. Using it with my Samsung Tab 2 7.0 and my bike would be a little trickier since I have a weather-proof case that mounts to the handlebars. Getting a USB stick or cable into it would not work. Such a shame since there are so many great sport/fitness programs for Android that do support ant+. A little surprising that Google would note code it into their hardware since they are all about tracking/obtaining data.
Could it be done with a custom ROM or is it even deeper in the hardware?
Going to have to do some real hard research for my next tablet.... Find something that does it all?
