Hi all,
I did a few searches before this and it seems like no one else has asked about this yet. My goal is to get some type of external radio working on an Android phone in hopes to learn more about the system and possibly get a USB LTE radio talking to Android. I know most of the phones use usb Micro which supports a host protocol but I don't know if the Android system supports it.
My first goal would be to get a usb wifi dongle or 3g dongle working. My reasoning is because those have linux drivers so maybe I could try to get the driver on the android phone? Just my thoughts.
Does anyone think this is possible? Thanks for any help.
PS: I am aware that I would need an adapter to make the dongle fit to the micro usb port.
SO far I have been able to get host mode working on a nexus one. Now I need to get into adding different kernel modules compiled. Does anyone know a good guide to follow to ge me started? I did a quick google search but it didnt really turn up anything other than compile the actual Android Kernel.

I've been searching but I haven't been able to find an answer...does the hd2 support USB host while running android? I'd like to b able to connect a web cam to it...I've have also found Bluetooth webcams, also wondering if using one of those with the hd2 would b possible....I'd just like to b able to video chat with the hd2 and I wouldn't mind carrying an attachment....

Android is based on a linux kernel isn't it ?
So, if USB host is supported under linux builds, why is it impossible on android ?

I don't think android in general allows USB host on any device... that's the problem. The linux kernel supports it, but android doesn't. If you use ubuntu you can have usb host on the HD2.
Actually, the Notion Ink Adam runs Android and has USB host mode. With a bit of kernel hackery, this could well be possible on the HD2.
Using a USB Y-cable and providing external power, it should be possible to connect all sorts of things. I'm patiently waiting for this capability as I have a USB SSD HDD that I connect to my car's head unit that I'd like to connect to my phone when I'm at work

You're right, I have seen other android tablets with usb host, too. I remember seeing the devs explain somewhere why android on the hd2 doesn't have usb host... I thought I remember it sounding like it wouldn't be able to happen until a later version of android... but I could be wrong or misunderstood. I'll try to find where I read this.

It's an easy way to use the USB connector in host mode, works under ubuntu.
with some adaptors you can build it also by using an y- cable.
But I think android for HD2 doesn't support anny usb features until now, perhaps someone will activate it in the kernel.

Yes, most of us are aware that host mode is usable whilst running Ubuntu. The problem is that Ubuntu is not really convenient as a main phone OS; Android is and some devices seem to have host mode while running Android.
Hopefully one of the devs will see this thread and give some insight.

yes, the ebay one is for a device that already supports USB host so will provide the power needed to host a USB device, and will not work with the hd2.
The xda one is a very clever workaround to get some usb host functions working on a non usb hosting device, that may just about support a usb keyboard and a memory stick, and no...............
Also i would like to ask if someone has tested such thing before, as i dont know if the 3g modem will be recognized...

You could always take the sim out of your 3g modem and use it in your phone, , not ideal but,.,,,

so with the ebay cable i wont be able to give power to anything external.....
i know that i can change sims but this is a very frustrating procedure, and besides the time it takes to change sim and boot phone, in the internet sim i cannot take calls, its an internet sim.... Would an dual sim adaptor work in my case?

I'm looking to get a tablet to introduce BackTrack 5 to. I don't believe this tablet has a wifi chip capable of injection, so I wanted to connect a USB wifi adapter to it (this one right here). I read in the update it's able to register the usb port for usb devices, but which exactly work without me having to create a driver? And, I'm sure there are linux drivers for said USB adapter, I assume I could take that and (easily) create one?
From what I've read so far, the USB port handles things like hard drives, keyboards and flash card readers (and not necessarily all of them).
A Wi-Fi adapter may function under Linux but you would probably have to be rooted on the device to install drivers since they are not natively included in the system build that I know of.
Backtrack 5 works fine on the A500. I'm running it right now. I've had no issues with it.

I am thinking about putting Backtrack on my Iconia A500. Following up on a previous question by NickkxNekro, would one be able to plug the Alfa wifi device into A500 and make use of it?

Greetings! I've been lurking on XDA for quite some time, and first I would like to give a big thank you to all the developers. I would never have purchased a Kindle Fire if I didn't have faith in your ability to unlock the hardware's true potential. You guys/gals rock.
Here's my question: I develop and troubleshoot municipal and commercial wired/wireless networks and I would really like to be able to use the KF with backtrack. I understand that OTG support under ICS is very close to being a reality, would it be possible to support an external wifi adapter via OTG?
Drawing power is the first problem that comes to mind, so my thought is to mod a USB OTG adapter to draw from an external DC source instead of the KF.
This could have some awesome potential if it could work. I'm willing to do whatever I can to make this happen, so if one of you veteran developers could set me on the right track to backtrack it would be greatly appreciated.
I'm no wifi/kernel expert but as far as i have understood it:
It should be possible if you get the right wifi modules to work. Android uses a modified wpa_supplicant, so even if you have linux wifi drivers for usb you would need to patch them to get it running. The current kernel does not have mac80211/cfg80211 modules compiled it, but i think that you probably would need them (i think they are in the kernel source, they are just not set yet). The current module for the tiwlan is proprietary and is also uses some strange ibCustomWifi as wrapper around WEXT, not sure if they also did some changes there.
If the 3.0 kernel boots we should anyhow change to a mac80211 wifi driver and also use wpa_supplicant 0.8 instead of 0.6 so your chances should be a lot better with the 3.0 kernel.
So it strongly depends if your external wifi adapter is very well supported for linux (or better for Android ....) und if we get otg running. (There might be some hidden problems to discover).

Has it been done already? Not to my knowledge.
'Theoretically' you should be able to get this working. Like Arrrghhh said, anything is possible. I did get a usb otg cable for the rhodium (well, not FOR the rhodium, but 'theoretically' it should work) and found that this function is supported in the specs for our processor chip.

That thread isn't talking about host mode, that thread is talking about transferring files via USB mass storage mode....
At any rate, I'm pretty sure the software simply supports it. Getting the hardware to talk properly is the hard part (again, as far as I understand it...)

i got the Female cable, but it never took the flash drive, dont know why? Tried Zeno's Drivers and Also Leo's too but its not working out, does it require an external power supply?
any one got it working ever?

No one ever got it working, I thought I made that perfectly clear...
I'm not sure what you need, again there's probably quite a bit of legwork that you'll need to do in order for it to talk on our devices. I don't think you can just "use" the LEO drivers in this case - however, adapting them might be a good place to start.

I thought I read somewhere that the TP2 can not provide power. You had to use a powered usb hub + device to have a chance at getting it working.
The downside being that you had all this stuff to haul around if you wanted to use an OTG cable.
