Google's Warranty - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've never own a Nexus device or have purchased it directly from Google. How is Google with respect to warranty for the device?
Not all devices are perfect and being an early adopter always has risks but I want to preorder the 7. Lets say the 7 has a Wi-Fi or battery problem which can be fixed by switching it with a new device, do I have to pay for shipping both ways to Google? Or since its built by Asus, is the warranty provided by Asus instead?

The Nexus 7 is manufactured by ASUSTeK Computer Inc. ASUS provides a limited 12 month warranty for the Nexus 7. Please refer to the warranty card in the Nexus 7 packaging or ASUS for details on the ASUS limited warranty.
I also read that for the first 15 days Google will provide free UPS shipping to get an exchange if it's defective.

If you notice a problem when you first use it, return it....you do not want a RMA with Asus. Horror stories abound on the Transformer Forum concerning wifi and other issues on the Prime. Good luck getting them to pay shipping when or if you need to send it back.

Where is the Best Place to Buy the Nexus 7? (UK)

I bought a Nexus 7 from Tesco Direct. They are only of the only retailers who have them in stock still.
They are able to to deliver to your nearest Tesco store, even a small Tesco Express store the very next day for you to pick up.
I had to issue of screen separation, I was able to return and get a refund very easily over the phone. They will come to collect the Nexus 7 and refund in 3 to 5 days.
I called Google, who said that they are aware of this issue which has been fixed by Asus, which means all the new Nexus 7 are fixed according to them.
I wish to know if this is true?
1) Are the new Nexus 7's fixed of this problem?
2) Are Google Play good and fast as taking goods returned and refunding?
3) Do they meet their delivery times?
4) Do you have to pay for any postage to return the item or anything?
Normally I only buy from retail stores, which means any time i have an issue i can go to the store and sort the problem out quickly.
However i am worried about buying from Tesco's even though they have very good service, I am worried i will get the older stock which still hast this screen separation problem, as they may have the older stock.
But i am also concerned about buying from Google Play because of the hassle of dealing with someone on the phone and posting the item back and waiting for delivery and so on. Hard to say if they have indeed fixed all of the issues... They say that they have addressed the screen separation issue and I can attest to that. As for taking returns, refunds, and exchanges Deff call them if you have any problems. The Google rep that I spoke with was very pleasant and more than willing to send me a replacement unit for my tablet which had dead pixels and a bad digitizer. The tablets are shipped via UPS 2 business days and my first tab took 4 days to get to me, called Google Friday and ordered my replacement the same day and it shipped Saturday. And to answer ur final question should u need a replacement Google will put a temporary charge on ur card for the replacement unit and they will email u shipping labels and RMA forms so u can get the exchange and once u receive the replacement just box up the defective unit and ship it back and they will remove the charge from ur card. Overall my experience with Google has been excellent and I would highly recommend doing business with them

[Q] Warranty from Google Play store?

Does anyone know if the warranty for the Nexus 7 (if purchased in the USA direct from the Google Play store) is transferable to a new owner?
I pre-ordered my Nexus 7 16GB during the Google IO announcement, and this weekend something on it borked out. Screen shut off and I couldn't turn it back on, and when I plugged it in the screen had a weird snowy/static pattern (accompanied by static crackling sound from the speaker).
I called Google and they are sending a replacement (that I basically had to order through the google play store but they are not charging my credit card unless I don't return the defective one).
So the reason that I ask is that I might just sell the replacement one since I now have a Galaxy Note 2 and the N7 isn't all that useful to me anymore. Can I claim that it is still under warranty until July (1 year from the date when I received the first one)?

I believe you could, but the best thing to do would be to call Google and speak with them yourselves. Although, I am sure that warranty transfer is possible

Did the buyer then get the months that were left on the warranty?
Yes it is. I bought mine off of Ebay from some guy for 170$. The USB port was broken completely (wouldn't connect to any computer). I asked him about a return and he said I was S.O.L and to call Asus. So I just kept using it for another week or two until randomly it just shut down and wouldn't ever reboot again no matter what I tried. So I bit the bullet and called them. I gotta say they have OUTSTANDING customer support. All he asked for was the serial number and told me it was still under warranty period. I didn't even have to show a receipt or anything. They must be able to get purchase records by serial number or something. Anyways, he emailed me a FedEx pre-paid shipping label and less than an hour after getting off the phone with them I was shipping my Nexus at absolutely no cost to me. I sent it in to them Unlocked running a Rootbox nightly and a custom kernel. I recieved it today EXACTLY 10 days after shipping it out. It did get wiped ( I expected that) and it's running the stock 4.2.2. But it works great now and I can connect to my computer now.
In short, YES, it is transferable as long as it really is under the warranty period.
Asus, has EXCELLENT customer support in my experience and I would recommend them to anyone.

I sadly broke my Nexus 7's(2013) screen and digitizer in less then 5 days. Shameful I know, but anyways I contacted Asus since there wasn't anything else I could do. Their customer service set me up with a representative within 5 minutes. I explained my problem and he told me that they can fix it but it may cost me. There wasn't another option so I said okay. So they sent me an email with a form and told me to ship my Nexus to a Asus repair facility. I did and within in a week they sent me it back and fixed the screen and digitizer for FREE! Yes free well unless you count the shipping which was a small price to pay for fixing the device that wasn't their fault in the first place. Anyways if any of you have problems contact Asus I'm pretty sure they can help you. I'm so happy thought I lost my Nexus.

That great to hear ASUS did that... +1 for Asus
Walmart sold me a 2 year accidental glass break/water damage warranty coverage for $28 it was a heck of a lot cheaper than Best Buys 2 year warranty at $70 so I got it. Hopefully if anything happens to the device its easily covered and ill get a new one instead of something fixed.
Off Topic - Does anyone have any experience with Walmart warranties they can share?
Asus was nice and pleasant to deal with.
I had to RMA one of my TF101s three times. It was the contracted repair shop (in Texas) who didn't fix the issue the 1st/2nd time.
They just re-flashed the stock image and sent back to me saying no-problem-found (I carefully documented the issue and suggested
they replace the mainboard due to faulty flash-storage). The 3rd time, I talked to Asus/San Jose directly and they asked the shop to
replace the board. It works beautifully since.
On the 1st RMA, somehow I unexpectedly got a new charger in the mail, from Asus (the issue was the unit didnot power on
even when plugged in). The 1st time I sent it out, it had a customROM onboard .. haha.
I've also only had good experiences with asus technical service. When my pc motherboard failed after a year, new one free!

I had a terrible experience with my N7 (2012) and Asus. Sent it in for a bad screen, and took 2-3 weeks to get it back. Glad to hear they're getting better

ASUS Warranty FAIL

I got my Nexus 7 for Christmas. Immediately after using it I started having random reboot issues, as well as touch screen response problems. I requested an RMA and paid to have it shipped to ASUS. I received my device a little over two weeks later. I couldn't tell you if the reboot issue is fixed or not, because I haven't used the device at all. After pulling it out of the box I noticed that the bezel was cracked and missing a piece on the bottom left side of my device.
What kind of horrible Quality Control process does ASUS have when they repair a device?! Obviously they broke it while opening it up to replace whatever they replaced internally (motherboard maybe?). I sent an email to ASUS immediately after noticing the problem and said I wanted them to repair it ASAP and that I would not be paying for shipping again. I have not received a response, but received an automated message providing me with a new RMA number. No email from a customer service representative apologizing or offering to cover my shipping costs.
I'm pretty annoyed with Google/ASUS and don't think i'll ever buy an ASUS product again.
Just though I'd share to warn anyone else who may be on the fence.
Why was it not taken to the establishment that sold the device? Google or Asus should be your last step not the first, it's like you people are just looking for reading to cry about now

The seller is still the first step, could have had a new replacement and not a refurbished replacement

He's right though. If you are within 30 days (or whatever the return window is), always exchange it for a new device. RMA should be a last resort. I just went through this with Dell with my Venue 8 Pro. I called Dell for tech support and they wanted me to send it in. I told them there was no way in hell I was sending a brand new tablet in for repair and I am just going to exchange it through Amazon. What amused me is that they insisted I don't do that and send it in to Dell. I told them to suck it.
With the situation you are in, I would keep calling Asus until you get ahold of someone who is actually helpful. I've never dealt with them before so I don't know how hard a task that may or may not be. Where was the tablet purchased from? If it was from Google, you might want to call them and explain the situation, they have seriously awesome customer service.

While I agree in principle, taking it back to the dealer first doesn't always work. Best Buy for example, has a 14 day limit. I bought my Transformer Prime from a company that simply refused to do replacements or returns (on the Prime specifically, for the record.. they must have heard in advance of the problems with that device...). It's even worse with Google because although it's a Google device - made for Google and sold on their website as their product - if you buy it ANYWHERE but from Play, they won't touch it.
I hate to make the obvious comparison but... consider iPad owners. Regardless from whom they buy the tablet - they can take it to any Apple Store or have it returned to Apple for repair. For them, Apple is the FIRST place you go unless you're returning it for a refund. And in general, Apple actually fixes the defective device (if it's within warranty period or if you have AppleCare) without giving the customer a hassle.
The guy's complaint is basically 'why can't ASUS be that good' - your response seems to be 'because they aren't.' More to the point, consider what you're actually suggesting: that ASUS is such a poor company to deal with that you shouldn't deal with them until you're out of options. Worse, you're suggesting that this is OK and that the guy is at fault for expecting the company that makes his tablet to be responsive and helpful.
That's kind of.. bizarre.

XDA users are so rude these days...
Swiss asus repair is pretty good. Got 2 tablet with defects and they fixed it in 2 and 3 weeks.
It depends where you send it for repair.
Asus repair issues? First I've heard of that...
Being in the computer retail and service industry, I sell MANY asus monitors, and I've had great success with them not having issues. Only twice have I had to deal with customer service, and in both instances they sent me replacement monitors and a shipping label to return the defective units.
That's a real shame you've had a bad experience with them, and as someone suggested, call customer service and request a higher level tech support/customer service agent until you are satisfied.
For future reference, do that for every customer service line you ever have to call, EVER.

Anyone have any luck getting a replacement from Huawei?

I bought my phone from Huawei directly at launch, and I have the typical shutdown randomly when taking pictures problem, even after having an OEM battery installed 3 months ago using my SquareTrade warranty.
I called Huawei and they didn't really GAF. Asked me to do a factory reset (which I had already done multiple times, with different versions of Android) and that was pretty much it. They didn't seem to really want to fix it. I *know* this is an issue, because I know Google is replacing these phones out of warranty for those who bought them from Google directly.
My question is, has anyone had any luck having this issue resolved through Huawei?
It's a shame, such an awesome phone, and although I've since replaced it with a OP5, I'd love to get it back into working order.
Did an RMA for a good friend with 6P. Contacted Huawei UK via chat. got in a return email all the details. a few days later got mail with padded envelope. Sent the device and got it fixed about 10 days later.
Battery was replaced and they even replaced charger module free of charge.

This was out of warranty?
They turned me down at Huawei UK. So shall use house insurance to get a replacement. I need my 6p working.

She had her warranty until March 2018 so didn't have much trouble to get it fix for her.
I didn't send the phone directly to huawei but a company in my country (Slovenia) that is authorized to repair huawei phones, it took almost 2 months but they sent me a new Nexus 6P. Didn't even buy the phone in my country but it still had warranty since I only had it for a year.

Another thing Apple is doing better. iPhone is manufactured by Foxconn, just as N6P was manufactured by Huawei. But all the marketing, design, and branding is Google. If you buy an iPhone at Best Buy, Apple is still responsible for the customer service and replacement, you can still bring your device to an Apple store.
This is moronic, I don't know why Google thinks they are special. All the papers, materials and boxes that came with Nexus 6P have Google branding, not Huawei.
