question about the rom development - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

i see we have a forum for each carrier's android dev. i thought they were essentially the same save perhaps the radio, maybe the kernel?
the question i have is this, does this mean that we won't be able to swap roms between the carriers? are they really that different? or would it be as simple as injecting an appropriate kernel/radio and then they would work?

I dont quite get the question exactly but think of the ROMs as an alternate OS for your phone. You flash it onto your phone (make sure to read all the guides before doing this) and it replaces the previous one. If you dont like it you can download the original ROM from your providers website.
so the rom works just like a normal memory? whats the difference then?
here's a wealth of information on upgrades, questions, etc...enjoy

To have the latest and greatest, or one that fits your needs better then what your service provider thinks your needs are.

No worries man, welcome to the community Chances are however you may end up with a few 'Just search!!' answers but I understand there is almost too much info to understand out there but do check out the sticky threads at the top of the HD2 rom development forum as there is a wealth of detail there.
In answer to your question: 'why would anyone want to mod the rom or mess with it? please kindly answer it.'
There are many reasons for doing this, I assume that you come from the 'HTC probably know whats best for their phone as they made it' point of view, this is not always the case.
Let's take a real simple example: There is a limited ammount of space in internal memory and the more you can get the better and some of this space is taken up by pre-installed applications and images that you may never use and some of these can't be removed simply by deleting.
This is where 'cooking' roms comes in: In order to remove those apps you have to create a new OS image (rom) without them in (this is cooking, which is generally performed by experienced people who will publish their roms in the roms forum) and then to be able to get that on your device you need to 'flash' the cooked rom (OS image) onto your device (think of flashing as installing the OS like you would windows from CD on a PC) , and viola you have a new rom on your phone which leaves you more space in internal memory to use for yourself.
There are obviously far more complex reasons for cooking roms (speed improvements, fixes, mods and changes to the UI) but in order to keep this short and simple I've used the above example. If you want to know more check the noob tutorials in the rom forum.
Be careful however, and ensure you read all the information you can search for / find in there as there are some potential pitfalls if you don't do it properly.
Thanks prime! I got it now :]

[Q] Dev Phone boards

So I ended up with a big box of g1 parts and it included 2 boards that are 1.0 but are very different from the regular android os, it includes all kind of HTC icons for testing purposes....from the research I done it leads me to believe that these belonged to the dev phones,
From what I understand, these are unlocked and "rooted" from the factory....
Please school me,
1.Do they have any inherit value?
2. any reason not to install another rom on them?
3. Will the unlock feature stay put when the rom is changed?
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Identifying Roms JQ1 ROM vs JPA vs JQ3?

I'm sure this question has been answered before but the terms are so vague its difficult to search for. So I'm gonna ask and hope I get an answer or maybe someone can point me in the right direction to research myself.
What is a JQ1 ROM vs JPA vs JQ3? Is this in reference to the modems, I notice they have similar names (though not always)? I'm hoping this is something simple I am missing but I am willing do do the leg work if someone knows of a place with definitions or something.
One more question can you install any modem with these different ROM's or does the name infer the modem type that must be used with it?

[ROM] Need information to understand how it works

Hi all,
I'm newbies in this domain and I would like to trie to make my own custom rom to understand. However i miss concept and I did'nt find any information how I can backup my actual rom from my galaxy S5 to obtain the firmware tar.md5 like those give by sam-mobile to use it to restore on a any phone or to extract to modify it to make my own custom rom.
Can you help me ?
Kind regards :good:
It's not clear what you are trying to do? Modify your own phone (ROM). Or create a custom ROM for redistribution to others?
Making a custom ROM for others is something that should be done by someone knowledgeable, which you aren't yet. If this is your goal, you have a lot to learn and should start reading a lot of existing threads. Do some searches for threads on repackaging firmware and creating custom ROMs. There are existing threads for both as well as a lot of tutorials on various aspects of Android, ROMS, flashing, et cetera.
Also why would you be doing this? There are a lot of existing great custom ROMs.. so what would do you plan doing differently to distinguish yours? At the most basic level, there are modified stock ROMs varying from simply debloated to highly customized. And ROMs built from source code (from scratch).
OTOH if you really meant that you just want to modify your own phone, then your post was misleading. You should still read the stickies and peruse the forum. Or at least do a search and read some threads intended for beginners so that you have some basic knowledge of how everything fits together. But you won't need to know very much compared to developing and supporting a custom ROM for others. If you're lazy.. you could just pick a custom ROM at random and follow the installation instructions in the custom ROM thread.
