Every time I boot the phone, the process android.process.media takes up 100% of the CPU for about a hour or so. In this time the phone responds very slow, and makes it almost unusable.
I do have a lot of pics on my SD-card (about 30.000), but they are in a hidden directory. Shouldn't the media-scanner skip hidden directories?
If I remove the pics the phones response is good. If I disable the media-scanner the phone also responds good, but the Gallery does not work anymore...
Does any one has a solution? Or is this a bug in CM9?
By the way: I do not have this problem in CM7.
Place a .nomedia file in your folder (any file should do or try an empty file. Just rename it to .nomedia)
Media scanner (and gallery apps) will skip the folder. 30 000 images?
Related, but not really the same thing: When I have a lot of music on my phone, my ram suddenly goes full, and everything is super-sluggish. Solution here was to uninstall doubletwist.

I already tried the .nomedia trick. But it doesn't work. Therefore I think it is a bug in CM9. The .nomedia file shouldn't be necessarily in hidden directories anyway.

I'm currently experiencing a very annoying problem with the gallery. When I press on Gallery, it takes a very long time before it loads the pictures. Same deal after taking a picture, if I want to view it, it takes me to a black screen, but if I wait for like 5 minutes, I can view all the pictures on my Camera folder. This is very annoying. Where in the SD am I supposed to place my pictures?
Bump, hope someone can help.

Installed it, doesn't help for me.
Hmmm...i tk it u tried all four possible changes while rebooting each time to see if it worked?...Unless u have a ton of pictures on ur card then maybe u should consider getting a higher class SD card then...
Try QuickPic from market, its for free.
Its better than the stock gallery:
- faster
- you can exclude or even hide folders beeing showed
- ...
Yes very true use QuickPic. Much better than stock.
ok, none of the answers listed above worked for me. nothing against the posters. I was having the same problem with my hd2 running android. I just read an article and it said to create a ".nomedia" file (in notepad on your pc) and transfer it into the folder you don't want shown. NOTE: if you do a search for ".nomedia" there might be one already created in another file. You can cut and paste it if you don't feel like making one).
My gallery ALWAYS crashed when I tried to add .gifs to an mms. I would be able to scroll once and then the gallery would get stuck and force close. Since I added the .nomedia file to the .thumbnails file in dcim (where there were 2,550 thumbnails) I can at least scroll through the full gallery WITHOUT a gallery force close. Again, it is not perfect or extremely fast, but it is now functional. Hope this helps someone else.
try a faster sd card
and OP please dont bump your posts after 1 hour or so of posting
I would also say: try a faster card - seems there is the problem - although the gallery appears quite often slow, when it is loaded for the first time and full with pictures from the pc.

It helped.
After updating my tablet to 3.1 OTA, the program Photo Browser 3D does not work anymore. Immediately after update or a factory restore, the program will work fine, but after adding all my photos to the tablet, the program will force close at EVERY start. Basically, it doesnt work at all now.
I have tried factory resetting 5 times now and the same problem happens every time!
Someone on a different forum recommended clearing the cache too, but the option is greyed out under Applications and it says that the cache is 0kb.
Can anyone help me with this issue? I was thinking that something was wrong with the apk, but I cant tell. I was thinking that I either need to reinstall the program using a new apk or that I need to flash the tablet with a fresh copy of 3.1. The firstoption would be easiest, but I cant find a copy of the apk. The second option I am scared to do. I dont know how to do it and I dont know which versions to get (I want to be sure I get one that works in the USA and that it isnt hacked, tweaked, or just a 3.0 version madeto look like 3.1).
If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.

Photo Browser 3D 1.0.00.027
Android 3.1 build 4.010.08_COM_GEN2
Android 3.1 kernel 2.6.36.3
After posting my last message here, my tablet told me I had an update available. UBFORTUNATELY, the stupid problem still exists. The only reason I am typing this folowup message is because the Android build changed.
NEW build: 4.010.10_COM_GEN2
NEW kernel: 2.6.36.3
Same Problem
I have the same problem with 3D Photo Browser.
I use Virtuous_Picasso_v.1.1.0.
Hey spexwood,
here you can give a try.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23326686/3DPhotoBrowser.apk
I tried the Photo Browser 3d above and I still have the same problem. Any got it to work?
I'm running the stock 3.1 and have no problem using it?
I got the app from the market if that helps.
3Dbrowser force close fixed.
Hi all,
I also had the force close problem with 3Dbrowser.apk. Clearing cache for the app did not work. Reinstalling the app by clicking the icon in the system app folder did not work.
Initially I froze the app, but then I tried the following and it worked:
1) download the full OTA package of the ROM version you're running
2) extract 3Dbrowser.apk
3) using root explorer, rename the original 3Dbrowser.apk in the system app folder to 3Dbrowser.bak or move it to the SD card.
4) copy paste the new apk into that folder.
5) change permissions to match the original permissions
6) reboot.
The original apk was 1,92Mb, the one I replaced was 1,93Mb.
I have about 5 folders with pictures (DCIM, Documents, Downloads, ...) they all work and the app is actually quite nice to show off the Iconia's capabilities.
Hope this helps.

After a LOT of experimenting and having thisprogram switch between working wonderfully and force closing upon launch, I have come to the conclusion that it is the pictures themselves!
So, the first thing you need to do is to check that none of your pictures (and/or movies) are not corrupted. I found that the best way to do this is to open the Gallery app and browse through all your files. Youcan use the view in which multiple files are displayed as thumbnails (as opposed to a single full sized picture view). If a file is corrupted, then it will not generate a thumbnail for it. Instead, the thumbnail will remain black and when you tap on it, a full size image will not appear. Instead, a message about the image not being able to be shown will be there.
If you find something corrupted, then delete it via the Gallery and try the 3d Browser again.
The second thing I noticed as of 5 minutes ago:
After a long time of no problems, the 3d Browser decided to stop working today, so I did what I just explained about searching for corrupted images... to my surprise, all of myimages were fine.
I once again opened the Gallery app and noticed something odd, but the only way I can explain it is through an example:
So, lets say you only have 3 folders of images: A, B, and DCIM. In Gallery, you will see these folders listed in a 3D-like affect. They will appear with the folder name under the thumbnail(s) followed by the number of pictures in parenthesis (such as "A (10)").
Of all the folder thumbnails, you will see one that contains no name, but only a number within parenthesis. When I entered this album, I noticed some odd stuff. First, it contained a mix of black-only thumbnails (corrupted files) and images I recognized from my collection. Second, if you look at the details of ANY of the files in this gallery, they have no location, no height, and no width. Hesitantly, I decided to delete everything from this gallery (held my finger over the folder in Gallery and once it highlighted green, I tapped the trashcan icon). It didn't affect any of my pictures and the 3d Browser began working immediately!
I guess this collection was some sort of thumbnail collection or something. For whatever reason, it just accumulates waste over time and if an image no longer exists on the tablet, then the thumbnail appears as a corrupted file, which freaks the 3d Browser out.
I'm sorry if all that was a lot to read and absorb, but I think that doing one of these two things is the solution to this annoying issue.

Hmm... that's basically what I did isnt it?
OK, so someone found a solution then. Awesome!
Too bad I didnt know before wasting months trying to figure this issue out =_=
I thought it was the apk, but after replacing it from several sources, it fixed nothing. Then, I installed a custom rom, which also didnt fix it. It wasnt until last night that I FINALLY got it working right.
Oh well. Problem solved XD
Thanks
Hey guys,
I've got a Nexus 4 running the latest version of Cyanogenmod.
Every things been fine with the phone until I woke up this morning and found I'd lost my custom ringtone. Also, my photo's wern't showing up in Gallery. I connected my phone up to my PC to see what was what. (Half the time my computer won't open the phone, it just opens up saying '0 items', and I have to un-plug and re-plug in the phone several times before it lets me access the internal storage).
I found that nothing had changed; everything was still on my phone, all my pictures, ringtones etc. I quickly backed them all up to my PC in case the Nexus decided to delete them.
I really don't understand why my phone is doing this. I've put my custom .mp3 ringtone in every audio folder I could find;
Media>Audio>Notifications>Ringtones
Music
Notifications
Ringtones
I've got the song saved in about 8 different locations on the phone, and it still won't recognise it in the ringtones options. I've tried various 'ringtone-setting' apps, but they haven't worked. They told me that my custom ringtone was selected but when the phone rang, it used the default tone.
ALSO, when I tried to put my photos back on my phone (DCIM>Camera) they arn't showing up in my Gallery.
Any one else experience similar problems and knows a solution?
Many thanks

Use file explorer and start to hunt down a file name ".nomedia" (without quotes), the file explorer need to have "show hidden files" enabled. For your case, most likely there is one placed under /sdcard.

There isn't a .nomedia file in the root of the storage but there is a NOMEDIA file in the Notifications folder.
I remember once reading on the forum about these issues, where a full sd card would cause lags and stuttering. I think I just encountered such a problem. The fix was easy, take the card off and put it back in, phone back to normal. But how do I prevent this? Does it occur often? Thanks!
Common Android problem. Mediascanner indexes all your files upon reboot, insertion of sdcard and randomly, causing lag, slowdowns, wakelocks, battery drain and heat issues.
The solution is fairly simple.
Just pop a .nomedia file into every folder you dont need for the system. (like a folder with magazines. You don't need to see those in a gallery app, you can just open them from a file explorer. Ditto for documents, films, navigational files, etc.)
The .nomedia file excludes the folder from the index service. You can find one to copy in the Android directory.
The nomedia files also apply to subdirectories, so any folders within the folder containing the nomedia file are also excluded, no need to place one in those.

Hi All,
I am experiencing a media scanning issue with (only) a specific app (so far) - 9gag.
Whenever I download an image from their feed with the dedicated 'save' button, it will save it onto my internal storage (can't change the location of that, just like you can't change it for whatsapp), but it won't show up in my gallery.
When I try to open the imaeg in the file explorer, it says 'scanning media files... try again after scan is completed' - however, no matter how long I wait, I can't open it and it never becomes visible in the gallery.
I tried following things so far:
- reboot: it works, every time I reboot, all files are scanned and in the gallery, however, if I save further images, the new ones won't show up until I reboot again
- stop media scanning service and clear data: no effect
- rename folder: no effect
- rename image file: this works, it shows up in gallery
- copy/move onto sd card: this works too, it shows up in gallery
As you can see, there ARE ways I can make the images visible, but none of them is a sustainable way. I can't reboot or rename after each image I save, that's madness.
Oh and btw, all other apps do work, for example if I save files through screenshots, downloads, Facebook, Line or WeChat, the phone does create a folder in the same way it does for 9gag and the media inside is visible in the gallery with no problems, so it is very likely app specific? I also reached out to 9gag already but i don't think they will reply...
Any ideas or comments (please refrain from anti-9gag comments like I received in reddit lol)?
Have you tried a different file explorer to see if you can view/move the file?
I've moved away from ES file explorer cause not a fan of their layout. I use Root Explorer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&hl=en
It allows for you to have two directories side by side (I use it to have internal and SD card) so that I can move files easily between the two.

Thank you, I have tried this app before, but with my old G2. Will try, but I'm wondering if that app has any effect on the media scanning process itself...
I have the same problem. The first photo i saved from 9gag showed up fine, after that, none of the other photos that I saved would show up. I didn't know about the restarting the phone part, to get photos to show up in the gallery. The only way i found to get the photos to show up is to download the app, ScanMediaPlz. After I save a few photos, I tap on the app, and the photos will appear in google photos. best way to get them to show up without have to restart the phone or rename the files. Hopefully it can get fixed later on so they show up right away in Google Photos after we saved them...
One more thing that i hate is that on Google Photos, it doesn't create a Facebook download folder. All photos saved from FB save to the camera folder. In the gallery app that i download it has its own dedicated FB folder with the photos I have saved.
