[Q] Gallery - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I'm currently experiencing a very annoying problem with the gallery. When I press on Gallery, it takes a very long time before it loads the pictures. Same deal after taking a picture, if I want to view it, it takes me to a black screen, but if I wait for like 5 minutes, I can view all the pictures on my Camera folder. This is very annoying. Where in the SD am I supposed to place my pictures?

Bump, hope someone can help.

Installed it, doesn't help for me.

Hmmm...i tk it u tried all four possible changes while rebooting each time to see if it worked?...Unless u have a ton of pictures on ur card then maybe u should consider getting a higher class SD card then...

Try QuickPic from market, its for free.
Its better than the stock gallery:
- faster
- you can exclude or even hide folders beeing showed
- ...

Yes very true use QuickPic. Much better than stock.

ok, none of the answers listed above worked for me. nothing against the posters. I was having the same problem with my hd2 running android. I just read an article and it said to create a ".nomedia" file (in notepad on your pc) and transfer it into the folder you don't want shown. NOTE: if you do a search for ".nomedia" there might be one already created in another file. You can cut and paste it if you don't feel like making one).
My gallery ALWAYS crashed when I tried to add .gifs to an mms. I would be able to scroll once and then the gallery would get stuck and force close. Since I added the .nomedia file to the .thumbnails file in dcim (where there were 2,550 thumbnails) I can at least scroll through the full gallery WITHOUT a gallery force close. Again, it is not perfect or extremely fast, but it is now functional. Hope this helps someone else.

try a faster sd card
and OP please dont bump your posts after 1 hour or so of posting

I would also say: try a faster card - seems there is the problem - although the gallery appears quite often slow, when it is loaded for the first time and full with pictures from the pc.

Its pretty annoying if my friends uses my phone and i cant let them go see pictures becouse im not that kind of boyfriend So is there any way to hide pictures / make folder with password? And sorry for my bad english i hope you guys understand.
like your honesty!!!
using file explorer.. go to...
(depending where your pictures are stored)
cut and paste the pictures contained in DCIM\100media\
into a new folder somewhere else on the storage card.. and it will no longer appear in the image gallery

That doesnt work, when i click "all albums" you can see those pictures.
Mate - have a look at this, in the hits & tips thread linked in my sig...
64. Disable Unwanted Folders From Showing in HTC Album
It just hides a folder from the album app. You can still manually browse to it with file explorer, for example, and open images from there.
Hope this helps

Haha =D you wish
i edited thet registry key but i'm having troubles.. while it is actually hiding pictures in htc album, they are still showing up in manila's tab, am i doing something wrong?
WinRar the files. You can even put a password on it so that if you loose the phone no one can see the pics. I found it the easiest and most secure way to hide your girlfriends pictures.

Free app to protect pictures
Hi,
Search for an app called FreeOTFE4PDA. It allows you to create a fully encrypted, password protected folder on your card. This can then be mounted as a storage card when needed. Within this you can create folder and do anything else you can do on a storage card. The important part is of course that you can not mount it if you do not know the password.

i run both windows and android, so what i'm trying to do is to hide android's gallery cache files (why did developers think that using readable jpg files as cache would be a good idea in the first place?)
that's the reason i want them to remain accessible for android use, but still don't want them to fill my windows photo tab with duplicates, so no rar storing can solve my problem
i fear i'll have to give up the 3d glory of android's gallery due to this stupid issue...
Use Total Commander, find the pictures, press & hold a picture, tap Properties, check the box "Hidden", press OK. The pictures can only be accessed through Total Commander.
It's a good thing my 900th post went to a good cause!

That's exactly the problem i'm having. You just have to keep the photos rarred while you using android. Not the perfect solution, if you find a better 1 i'm interested too.

1)Change the extension to some other (from jpg to ipg in example). So no one program will open it. When you need it change again to jpg.
2)make it hidden or system

Camera Pictures not showing up in gallery...

... problem exactly as stated above. Sometimes I will take a picture with the camera and it doesn't show up in the photo gallery until I restart the phone.
Anyone else have a problem with this? Has anyone figured out a way to fix it without restarting?
Yeah I'm having these issue as well and also happens with picture downloads. they wont show in the gallery until after a few reboots at times as well. or sure what's going on with that.
a quick fix, so you dont have to reboot your phone is to kill gallery with a task manager, and open it up again.
ok guys i'm had that same issue now my gallery is gone altogether....my gallery will load but it says loading images...then it says there is no content to be read...i down load an app from the market and it not seeing my sd card either...but if i go in file explore i can see everything on my card....i done a hard reset like three time no luck please help....htc said may have to send the phone back...i think its to small of an issue to lose my phone for a week or more...it maybe a simple fix so i will try this first before...ty for any help someone can offer
oh yeah if i take a new pic it will show up in the gallery but when i reboot its gone....
ok guys i fixed....what i did was took everything off my sd card....re formated...turn the phone off for like 5 min....then back on....put every thing back on the card check the music player and gallery to see if they worked and everything was there....then i rebooted to see if everything would disappear so far i'm good to go i have all my pics and files back....only thing on the first gallery load up be patient it take a min to load the sd card it will flash loading...but after that im good to go...i'm by a new sd card i think that may have been the issue....
It happens to me too. I unmount and remount the sdcard, and the Gallery finds everything.
I find if i go into the camera app, the latest photo is there in the preview box. if i open it, and then go back to the gallery app, it (usually) appears. but yes, annoying bug really.

oddly, i never had this problem until just a second ago, but what this guy said is exactly how i got around it too. i took a photo, task killed camera, went to gallery, no photo, reopened camera, photo was in preview, clicked on it, went to gallery from there, and there it was, ready to share.
it's gotta be a bug of some kind. perhaps the most recent photo isn't loaded to gallery until another photo is taken, or you click preview box. stupid, but possible.
Problem Solved
Hi friends, I encountered the problem as well today and found the solution: Go to the sdcard and search folders for a file named .nomedia and delete it should solve the problem. No need to format or things like that worked fine for me. seems some kind of bug
.nomedia is a file designed to hide directories from being searched by Android Media Scan (which includes Gallery). There is absolutely no reason to delete it, and it's not a bug.
However, there is a bug in Media Scan, which sometimes causes Gallery to "miss" pictures. Executing Media Rescan (from "Development") solves it, or as stated above, just unmounting and mounting the SD card.
There's no Media Rescan in Development on my gb 2.3.3.
I've experienced something similar. I've been running the various CM7 builds and whenever I'd take a pic and immediately share it on Facebook, the pic will never be seen again.
Since then, I've gotten in the habit of hitting up Sugarsync first to sync the new pics, the send it up to Facebook via the gallery.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
stock 2.3.3 and i had the problem today.
force quit gallery and it was back to normal.
why is 2.3.3 so buggy!?

[q] camera question

When i take pictures using the camera the pics get saved on the sdcard, they do not show up in the gallery! any ideas why this is? how do i get the pics to save in the gallery?
You just need to wait a few seconds or minutes when it happens. This happens because the media search service does not recognise the recent saved picture file to the sdcard. The reason could be that you have a low class (for example class 4 like me) sdcard.
If the waiting does not seem to be a working method you need to check that you dont have a ".nomedia" file in the /sdcard/DCIM/camera folder. If you have, delete it.
You can try Switch Pro widget too, which is an app with a lots of switching widget in the home screen, and has "Reload Media" widget too. Put it on the home screen, and just press it once, and your media search service will search for new files on sdcard.
If you have froyo, you can try closing the gallery app, and free up the memory in the task manager before you open the gallery.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if it worked!
Cheers:

umm
I think its as u said just very slow to discover the new media on the sdcard, i have only had this problem since flashing XXJPM
Gallery is a good looking stock app, but often slow and useless.
Try "QuickPic" from Market! It is faster and more useful.

[Q] Where do my video files go?

I can't find them anywhere...i thought they would just show up with the photos in the gallery.
While we're on it, not a fan of whatever the stock gallery is i have on here to view photos...seems to take forever.
Any help with both these issues much appreciated
Im not a fan of this post. First, where did you put the video files?
About the Gallery, are you using an sd card? Read this.
Ha, sorry you don't like my post, but i appreciate you coming in to respond!
I will read that article you linked...
I didn't PUT the video files anywhere. i shot some on my phone but once they were done shooting (i hit the stop button) i had no idea where to find them to view. I think i have like 10-20 videos that i just don't know where they would be stored
if you have an sd card it's by default in /mnt/sdcard-ext/dcim/Camera. If you don't have an sdcard mounted then it's in /mnt/sdcard/dcim/Camera. If you connect your phone to your computer and set the USB mode to mass storage then you will just see the DCIM folder.

Haha, good times. I understand now you are talking about video shot with the phone. I didnt know if you were downloading it or transfering it or what.. In my Gallery vids I shot are in a folder called "Camera Roll". If you are using an ext sd, the linked article will explain how you can increase the size of the cache. Im assuming that is why you dont like the gallery and it takes forever to load.? My gallery is plenty fast loading thumbnails and folders, and I have a bunch.

[Q] Help please, Gallery.

I used to get my photos stored on the 64Gb ext. storage. This morning I wanted to attach one of my photo to a correspondant through Viber but the Gallery app said there are no photos. I checked my the sd card with and my file explorer, and found all there. I made an experience, taking a new photo and verify where it is stored. In fact it was added to the same folder where all photos are. Again when I try to attach photo to my Viber message, I found only the last one I took but non of the others.
Can someone help me please to fix this issue, with many thanks.

I believe the list you see in some programs like Gallery is not a true filesystem list but instead is coming from a quick database (but apparently not from the huge hidden /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.thumbdata3-xxxxxxx file that is also created there in the process, but which might not be a real file).
While that index is re-created the list will look empty - I think you might be able to force the re-index by rebooting your phone and then waiting a few minutes.

Thank you for your prompt reply and the explanations you gave me.
In fact the problem had been solved by moving the folder "camera" to another place.
Now Gallery can see all my photos.
Cheers
