Hi everyone,
I'm getting a Note (whenever it does actually release that is).
Keen to know what questions you have about the device? Either ask here, or post a comment here (it'll probably be easier for me to track questions via the blog).
Will also be getting a Razr and Nexus if you have questions about those handsets.
Hey!
I can't wait to get this phone!!
The stylus looks interesting, and I'm keen to know whether it feels "right" as a pen and paper substitute. Can you write on the screen easily without the stylus dragging too much/feeling too slide-y etc? I'm talking purely as using this as pen/paper rather than using handwriting-recognition etc.
Oooh - also, if this is something you were planning to do, I'd be interested to know how Divx/videos look/work over HDMI out
And battery life is always a good Q, although I know it normally takes a week or two to get a feel for this.
Very jealous of your new phone! Thanks for your report
Thanks man, I waiting for one myself. My one question is: When can I upgrade to ICS? Not easy for to answer
An overall comparison between the devices would be nice.
I am so hopeful that it will come to the US on AT&T, I'll skip the SGS II for this one! I'm very interested in the stylus and its functions, if you could go over that I'd appreciate it.
Please try to include stuff that other videos don't.
It seems like the videos cover the exact same stuff over and over - it's incredibly boring. I'm close to making my own video actually, if I don't see a review that I like.
Stuff I want to know, for example:
1) Most of the stylus writing demos are stupid. They write 'HELLO' or "BOB' in huge finger paint letters.
That's not how it's supposed to be used. It's supposed to emulate a pad of paper and a pen. Can you write, say, a shopping list on it? Is it comfortable to write on? Does it have enough friction or does the stylus slide all over the place? Is it really noisy and would annoy everyone around you? (plastic vs glass = tap tap tap generally) How comfortable is the stylus?
How well does say, a regular capacitive stylus work? what exact functions will you lose? (pressure sensitivity, screenshot button, anything else?)
2) Show some pocket tests. Show how easily it slides into say, a front jeans pocket. Then sit down. Do jacket pockets, or whatever. People always ask how pocketable it is.
3) Ideally show some useful ways to use the stylus.
There's a demo of some guy circling the weather map and writing 'nice weather'. is anyone really going to do that?
The 'trace an outline to crop'- that's clever. Anything else like that?
A better example is to say, take a screenshot of a map, with buildings circled that you want to visit. I think a stylus is at its best when annotating things like documents or whatever.
4) Does the s-pad scroll, like you are a window above a larger sheet of paper? or is a fixed block?

Pocket tests +1.
Like jeans, trousers etc. Might as well have to completely refresh my wardrobe for this.
One thing that I did not see yet is how the applications would look like in 1280x800 and compare to let's say a regular 800x480.
Can we return to a 800x480 mode if we want (with a reduced window)?
How easy is it to crop images ? What are the different functions of the built in drawing program?
Are there any other apps for taking notes compatible with the pen ?
Does the pen work as a mouse in a VPN connection/remote connection to a Windows system ?
On the audio outputs, what is the maximum output level?
Can you take pictures with the volume buttons ?
Hi,
Im interested much on Note, because dont want to have both smartphone and tablet PC, so hope Note can replace both.
Im worry about matter, said on some forum & review: Note as phone is too big but as web browser is too small.
Also with a high price, i worry to buy very expensive but not for daily use product.
Pls give your review how Note is comfortable for the daily use?, Can it completely replace a smartphone and tablet ?

Here is a nice video that shows the note fitting into some jeans. I have seen most of it before, but the pocket demonstration is not till after the 14 minute mark!
BTW, I have a Dell Streak 5" and its actually a little longer than the Note. Fits into my pockets fine, even with Otterbox case...

Why on earth would you want the former?
I have some games on my current phone which don't scale, and appear in the middle. I can't stand it - the controls are impossible. ( i guess since we have the stylus it is okay, but why would you actually want this? It's not like you can open multiple windows)
I'm quite certain the answer to the last question is no - you have to use the camera app (and I beleve the galaxy s 2 is the same way)
- Frank
Is the touch experience as fluid as galaxy s2? I mean is the stylus an added bonus or a requirement? Did you try throwing it against the wall?

It's a matter of taste, and how you use a phone/tablet.
As far as tablet goes, would you be willing to go down to a 5.3" screen for pocketable 24x7 access? Depends - for example if you read a LOT, maybe you prefer that 7"/10" screen.
As far as replacing your phone goes - it's mostly how big are your hands, and how important is one handed usage? This is a two handed device, like all tablets.
- Frank
Can you also answer my concern?

It seems just like a big S2 (I have both), the stylus is a bonus, not needed.
I didn't throw it against the wall, since my S2 has become to small, so I will throw that against the wall.

This is just in case the scaling looks odd or in case the app does not launch properly.
The scaling from iphone to ipad apps is quite bad, often I don't use the scaling for iphone apps on ipad so just making sure you can remove scaling if you want to.
Please test the audio quality in headphone out and let us know if its good or atleast any better than galaxy s2.

The Stylus has nearly no friction and is sliding very fast over the glass. A little tap noise is there, but not annoying. Also the Stylus is a little bit small! imho its not very comfortable to write but for me thats ok because I just wanted the big screen

With the stylus very easy because if you hold the button on the stylus and hold a long tap on the screen it takes a screenshot of the whole screen!

Please nswer my question as well.
I love my Note, and I think its screen is the best among all the phones currently in the market. It also has the highest portability among all the tablets. But I can't keep thinking that a true tablet should have at least a 7'' screen. So I think why don't the manufacturers create a 4'' device with a 7'' screen? It's not hard, but I'm surprised why no company has ever thought of that....
Any comments?

How can you have a 4" device with a 7" screen?
If you just mean a phone with a 7" screen, it's already been done - the original Galaxy Tab could be used as a phone and it had a 7" screen.

Sony Tablet P seems the best device currently available fitting your need.

I never understood the 'the note is too small to be a tablet', or why people pick an arbitrary number like 7 inches. Is the world just brainwashed?
If someone made a 6.8 inch tablet, that's not a 'true tablet'?

It does not have a 7'' screen, it's two screens of about 5'', separated by an annoying bezel.

No need to be exactly 7'', above 6.5'' inch is a good enough screen... BUT again, it should be put on a 4'' size device body.

Please explain *exactly* how you would put a 7" screen on a 4" "body" (as you put it it!).
The size of the screen dictates the size of the casing/enclosure!

i think what the op wants is a flip phone, which when opened, looks like the note. I.e. a two led screened device, but no bezel between them so it appears like one big screen.
i think it would be pretty awesome, though not sure if it is possible.

So what's the point of even raising the topic on these forums if its not the place to talk about it?
Whilst there are flexible screens these days, they are not "foldable" as such (i.e. they couldn't fold flat), so you'd either have to have 2 screens like the Sony or the tablet would have to be much thicker so cope with the allowed curvature of the screen when it was "closed", which in turn would probably mean an elaborate hinge mechanism too.
Also, since you've split the device into two "halves", it's likely you'd need either a thicker battery for one half, or two slimmer batteries with one in each half. Either way, this device is going to end up thick and as such probably pretty much unpocketable.
You may well have some good ideas about how to resolve these issues, but since "this isn't the place" to discuss them, I've no idea!

Dave

Thanks for your reply.
My "idea" really is nothing much to talk about, as it's just something that came to my mind during my day dreaming...
Regarding the thickness issue, I believe single battery on one side is enough, so basically can be made to be around 10mm.
I'm yet to discover the 'worth'
usage of any tablet...i mean it cant replace your laptop whatsoever! Perhaps it's just a show off...
For everything a tablet does, has a better doer! This is where exactly the beast enters...Galaxy Note. The idea behind this gadget is to give you enormous power & portability(precisely) on the go without any worry of carrying it.
Hope this answers

This is exactly what people said about the Note, yet only a small percentage of Note owners actually have this complaint.
I agree with the previous poster, I'd love to have a 6" phone/tablet myself...
I feel the Note's current size is at about the limit for pocketability. If they can squeeze more screen at the expense of the bezel, fine... but the size is what makes this device unique. Make it too big, lose the pocketability, and you might as well go larger.
I have owned a full size tablet. It's great for relaxing on the couch.
But... my Note does that (perhaps not as spaciously) but also does so much more since it can go with me everywhere. For me; the Note size is why I own it.
I used my 7" Huawei Ideos tablet as a phone for a while. While I really liked the big screen and ability to surf w/o straining my eyes while on the go, portability was definitely an issue. You can fit the Note no problem in a big pocket, but a 7" tablet is just a bit too impractical to carry around. It's just like carrying a small purse with you.
Hey guys just been kinda creeping around this forum as the note will likely be my next phone. This thing is awesome for me. Ive been longing for the size and video quality of a tablet but wanted it to be as portable as my X2. August 2011 really needs to come faster...

Hi, Maybe this should be in the accessories section but I did it myself, It's not much and I know that so not criticism unless it is constructive please.
This isn't criticism.
What exactly is the advantage to having that "ring" (for lack of a better term) around just the face of the phone? It seems like it would be more useful around the back of the phone.

There is what is called "bumper cases" which are pretty much just a ring to protect the corners and make a small gap between the screen and the floor or any level horizontal surface so if you drop it, it will hopefully not break your phone screen or corners. This one fails a bit at the later but I imagine keeps the corners slightly protected.
Ok

OK, I really hope that wasn't sarcasm because I have watched too much of the big bang theory to notice sarcasm anymore lol!!!
My Dad actually works in the cellphone case business so I may actually have some good insight, the one real popular feature as of late is the incorporation of a wallet into the case. So if you could work that with a bumper in an otherwise then accessory that would be pretty awesome
I don't think one exists yet..
What I'm looking for should be pretty obvious, most folio cases open from the right side to the left. It just seems that zero manufactures have actually made a leather flip case in this fashion. I've had a fair number of devices, and pretty much all of them had a normal case. I think it would be pretty awkward to go against muscle memory, and I don't want to have to return anything.
So I hope we can find something like this.
Wow, so I literally just found one.
But I do have a concern, if anyone has this case ( http://www.amazon.com/Nillkin-Tree-Texture-Fully-Enclosing-Google/dp/B00APK7OM2/ref=pd_cp_cps_0 ) could you let me know if the volume buttons are hard to press?

That one actually looks pretty good. I like how the volume/power buttons are actually cut out, rather then punched out holes.
It's pretty expensive though, I don't think I'd go much higher than $20 for a case.

Strange, OP says right to left. Nilkin or similar will do just fine.
By the way, I have had my red Nilkin case since December and quality is amazing, especially for the £10 it cost delivered. Volume buttons and power are easy to press, headphones and charger fit fine, it doesn't add much bulk to the phone, and is looks awesome.

Does the tablet works when in bed, like is it annoying oe heavy or is it okay to watch videos (anime) on without problems?
I think it's perfect for bed usage. No to heavy and not to big. The speakers are a big plus when watching movies, netflix or youtube.
It's not too bad. And depends how you're holding it. I like to hold it on the speaker side on landscape. There's a lot of room on either side. Portrait mode not as comfy. Overall still light. But I would prefer if it had a stand so I wouldn't have to hold it all.
