I am a resident of NYC and an AT&T subscriber, currently using the Samsung Galaxy S3. LTE coverage in NYC is excellent, and I typically get 25-50 Mbps downstream, depending on the area. However, I've always been a fan of the Nexus line, so I ordered the Nexus 4 from the Play Store when they became available again a couple of days ago. Here's my question: how are AT&T's HSPA+ speeds in NYC? I'm well aware that the N4 is not LTE-enabled (the LTE Band 4 hack will not work in NYC, since AT&T runs LTE on the 700 mHz frequency here), so I'm concerned with going back to slower speeds.
LTE has really spoiled me, to the point where I would be willing (albeit reluctantly) to forgo the untainted Android experience and slow updates if data speeds will be slow.
Turn off LTE and then test your speeds. You will have your answer.

I was curious about this myself. I am in Queens on T-Mobile (out of contract) and get 20 Mbps down and 2.5 Mbps up (faster than TWC).
If T-Mobile is an option, it's worth it! As for AT&T, I have only seen numbers for Straight Talk (via AT&T) and they are not good (less than 10 down).

This.
You can easily turn off your LTE and test out hspa.

AT&T's GS3 doesn't have the toggle option to disable LTE. From what I understand, AT&T has also disabled the dialer code to turn off LTE. I'll look into it a bit further.

Unfortunately, T-Mobile is not an option for me, as the data speeds top out at 0.5 Mbps downstream in my area (Bensonhurst). I am actually a former T-Mo subscriber who ended up leaving for AT&T. I get an average of 20-25 Mbps on LTE inside my apartment (up to 50 Mbps outside), so the Nexus 4 would really have to impress me to use it as a daily driver.
Been using T Mobile $30 100 minute 5GB and I have to say I am thoroughly unimpressed. I live in my college town and I only get HSPA+ when I'm not at my house (otherwise its edge when I am at home). Amazingly, on my campus I get 1G in buildings.
So I'm concerned because I want to move to Straight Talk, but will I essentially see the same results with Straight Talk depending on whose Sim I use? My house is in HSPA+ territory for my home and campus for ATT, is it worth the slower speed for consistency? How slow is ATT HSPA+ compared to T More?

Without somebody from your area to give you specific information you won't know without trying.
That said I've tried ST ATT and ST TMo on my N4, ATT gave me slightly more 3G coverage but I was seemingly capped to ~1.5Mbps of data in most areas, Tmo gives me the coverage I was used to (I had Tmo for 3yrs) but I see ~5Mbps in most areas. I kept Tmo and personally I only care about data outside of the house, I have wifi at home so it's a non-issue.
I can speak from my experience with AT&T and TMO(in NYC). I'm on a post paid AT&T plan and the $30 prepaid 100min 5gb TMO plan.
In NYC my speeds with TMO are much faster. On average with AT&T I get anywhere from 3mb-6mb download speeds depending where I am. With TMO I've been seeing more like 9MB-14MB down. Upload speeds seem to be pretty close to one another
With my AT&T sim I do get service in more places than with TMO. In a few NYC subway stations for example, I'll get a signal with AT&T and nothing with TMO. I also have a stronger AT&T signal when I'm indoors compared to TMO. To me the speed is more important especially on a device with limited storage where I have to stream a lot of media

I tried TMo and was happy with speed of 12 - 18 Mbs; however, indoor performance at home, some offices, and large stores was disappointing. I would be on Edge or lose signal altogether while indoors. I switched to ST AT&T and couldn't be happier. My speeds are 4 - 6 Mbs, but I have signal almost everywhere. This is in South Florida, YMMV.
Thanks everyone for your input. I guess I will just need to order both SIM cards to see how everything works out
Hi guys, I have a pay monthly sim which is from T-mobile and it will end in 4 Months and i am waiting for Samsung s4 release. Basically which network provider is better? I want to swap to Three because they have cheap and good plan for the S4.. What is your experience with this network provider? Do they have fast internet? are they better than T-mobile?
Regards.
LTE has been deployed in a few cities already and the DC-HSPA speeds are pretty good. Not sure about Three though as I've never really heard of them. LTE speeds seem to be consistently 20Mbps down and around 30-50msec pings from the screenshots I've seen for KC and Vegas. And getting the $30 5GB plan is really good.
I assume you're talking about the UK? Three aren't rolling out 4g until q4 of this year, tmobile will never roll out 4g, you need to go to EE for that. Three's dchspa is great from my experience-

I have a Nexus 4 on Three currently, using their £12.90 plan with AYCE data, speeds seem to fluctuate alot for me, between 0.5Mbps and 12Mbps in the same room of my house, depending on the day. Ping times are lower than 100ms 80% of the time, so fast page loading. My Mum is on T-Mobile (using an iPhone 4 so no DC-HSDPA, not sure if T-Mobile support it anyway) and her speeds are never higher than 2Mbps down with 200ms ping, haven't tried her sim in my phone so can't comment on if it's phone related or network, but what I suggest is get a Three payg sim, top it up with a bit of credit and check the speeds in your area, also check their coverage map as they don't have a 2G backup everywhere (only rural places with little to no 3G)
I thought there was a dedicated TMobile One thread here. Now I don't see it and running late today, so--
A sales rep told me a tech said Dayton will turn on LTE in July. Cincinnati will not for now. He said TMobile says to start selling that info here for phone purchases. So, may be pretty accurate. Have known him for awhile. Don't know if that will help anyone like me waiting for much better signal here. I am on fence staying with TMO or going ATT. And don't want to buy phone till I can test the One on TMO LTE where I need the better performance here for business appts. I have other reasons, but not important to this thread.
I know I can get dev edition, but not sure on it's optimization for att as opposed to att one as far as signal reception. I know that can open a bucket of worms for discussion. But, again as OP, not really wanting to get in to that here.
This is basically just FYI--
For what its worth,I've been seeing 3G and H data on my international one X in many parts of dayton,Kettering, beavercreek, moraine,Huber heights, riverside. Working on my att jetstream and inspire as well.
Wonder if they'll have the holes filled in by July when they flip on LTE?
Been debating this phone vs the butterfly, and now that the refarm is creeping in,not sure if I go with t mobile or the dev edition if I go with the one
Thanks for the info

Thanks Scotty,
Yeah, the holes are their biggest problem. Not enough towers. May be same with lte.
They offer could pricing, but not great coverage.
I am still not sure on lte here in July, when you look at how little they have done compared to att this year. Will see--
If you are buying any of the HTC One Developer Edition 32GB or 64GB the only problem that you might run into is with T-Mobile Because they still have 1700Mhz in use in some areas where they dont have 3G or HSPS on 1900Mhz. But as of today they have Re-frame most of there network in almost 48 cities with 1900Mhz so you will be able to use there 3G or HSPS with Downloads of 14MB and Uploads 6MB. As for my case I got the 64GB HTC One Developer Edition and Im now seing the 1900Mhz in some parts of Jacksonville FL. Your phone will also support LTE 1900Mhz on T-Mobile Lte ones they roll it out. So far I love my phone its Bloatware free with lots of Gigs. I hope this help.

I will probably go att, since tmo towers or less in number than att. Since Dayton still doesn't have att lte and they have been very agressive, i am doubting lte for tmo in july. att is set for this summer for sure. I am torn on dev or not. Would like to see someone in Dayton with it, but i will probably decide before either have lte here.
has anyone been able to determine if team mobile turned LTE on in dayton?
ATT did this week.
Call a store and ask most would have att phones here. Att is working great.

Has TMo LTE shown up here yet?
when i was on 4.2.2 i had the LTE mod on my Nexus 4 and got LTE.. only about 15Mbps/
about to get a N5 and see how good it really is with real radios.
So I got my VZW Dev Moto X Wednesday and wanted to give a little review so far. Like most of us I replaced an aging VZW Galaxy Nexus w/ extended OEM battery.
Initial impressions
- this thing is FAST!!!!!
- its physically smaller then the GNex and taking a little bit to get used to (typing is a little off while getting used to the new phone)
- signal is much better then the Gnex (duh!)
- battery is worlds better (ran from 8-5 yesterday on LTE at work with 7 hours of Google Music streaming, then home and on wifi. Ended up with 4hr 43min of screen on before it died)
- its official, I'm addicted to Active Notifications.
- I find myself wishing for the stock android browser for a few sites, seemed a little snappier then Chrome (could side load I'm sure)
Overall I am a happy camper. Now to see what the dev community comes up with!
Wow it sounds amazing, I hope it will come to europe!

Check the themes/apps section. There is a thread for the AOSP browser.
good phone:good:
I'm in almost the same boat as you coming from the Verizon Gnex.
I loved being able to play with different ROM's.
So I bought the Verizon Moto X DE.
This phone is lightyears ahead of the Gnex.
I'm not a heavy user but I've been getting great battery live.
6AM to 9PM with 1 1/2 or more of screen time with 70% battery left!
Much better reception, I'm even getting 4G in the building at work where the Gnex had trouble gettting 3G.
Have anyone compare this device or the regular Moto X to the Droid Maxx?
Switched from Verizon Galaxy Nexus to T-Mobile Moto X. Moto X is definitely light years ahead.

I'm thinking about switching from Verizon to T-Mobile and I'm wondering how you like it. I live in San Diego and T-Mobile LTE is supposedly pretty good out here. Earlier in the year I experimented with the Nexus 4 and T-Mobile before they had LTE in my area. I had a couple of dead spots here and there, but it was OK. I'm thinking of trying them again since they have LTE now.
If you don't mind answering:
1) Do you happen to live in Southern California?
2) How's your coverage so far compared to Verizon? Does your area have LTE?

I live in LA and just switched from a RAZR m and previous to that a gnex on Verizon. I'm running a Puerto Rico model moto x without aws hspa and I think it still has better reception than Verizon. Verizon actually had some areas with no reception. Verizon does almost always give you 3g when t mobile for me might hit edge but I haven't seen a dead spot on t mobile yet. Have had it about two weeks...
In the bay area where I used to live Verizon was much better than t mobile but in LA at least its not really worth the money

I used to live in Northern California, and now I'm in New England (have used T-Mobile and Verizon in both locations). Basically the theoretical coverage of Verizon is better, but I find the T-Mobile experience leaves me with a less frustrating experience.
T-Mobile, when it has coverage has good coverage. The coverage is solid. But when T-Mobile doesn't have coverage, it's got nothing--zero. This usually happens in rural areas or remote suburban areas.
The problem I had with Verizon on the Galaxy Nexus was the horrrible handoffs between CDMA and LTE. There were a lot of times (in urban areas, even) when my Galaxy Nexus would be on the cusp of 3G with two bars and 4G with one bar, and the phone couldn't make up its mind, so I ended up with essentially no usable data. If I switched to CDMA-only, things would work better for a while, but eventually my entire workable signal would just disappear. This was with the stock Android, rooted Android, old radios, new radios. I tried everything and could not get a good consistent signal. There were also weird situations in which I would appear to have a full signal and couldn't connect to anything. Other times, I would appear to have no signal, and web pages would still load.
TLDR version: Verizon was a headache.
I'm much happier with T-Mobile. When I have good coverage, it's good, and the signal bars never lie. Transitions between 3G and 4G are smooth. In fact, I rarely have 3G at all. Seems to just be 4G HSPA+, 4G LTE... or nothing.

I am in San Diego and TMO's 4G LTE is great from South to North County. My wife has Verizon and it has better coverage when we go out of town up the Sierras (Yosemite), but in every metropolitan area I have been to TMO has been blazing fast with 4G LTE data speeds actually faster than Verizon's. Here in Poway, I can consistently get 23MB down with 15MB up. Even in standard 4G non LTE, I see 15MB down and 3MB up. :good:

That's awesome. I work in Poway and live in Mission Valley. Verizon has really been pissing me off with forcing people off of unlimited, increasing the upgrade to 24 months, and delaying updates. I love what T-Mobile is doing. I think I may have to see what the Nexus 5 has to offer and make a switch if it's good enough.
Hey, if you do not talk much, TMO offers a $30/month prepaid plan that offers unlimited data (first 5GB up to 4G LTE), unlimited text, and 100 voice minutes. Even if you go over the 100 minutes, the per minute price is pennies and would not equal a traditional voice plan for approx. 250+ additional minutes. I use this plan and Google voice and Skype since TMO allows WiFi calling too and it's all good, but most of the time I use less than 80 voice minutes per month regardless.
