Maps and Calendar are unforgivably buggy - Transformer TF300T General

Google Maps crashes to my home screen pretty regularly, and the stock Calendar app freezes up and has to be killed just as often. It's really a major problem for me, those are two main apps that I use and I need them to be stable.
Is there anything I can do to help this? I've seen it mentioned on this forum before about changing the build.prop, but I'm not sure if that's relevant here.
Any help is appreciated, and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere (but I did indeed search before posting).
Thanks in advance.

Try clearing the apps data, and doing a cold reboot. If that doesn't work try doing a factory reset. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas. Never had any problems with those apps. Are you on the latest firmware?

A cold reboot seems to have helped for the time being, but I'll continue to put it through its paces. How often would you say that you cold boot your device? I know I've done it at least once or twice before, so this probably isn't a permanent solution to my problem unfortunately. Thanks for your suggestion, btw.

ive not used the calendar but maps works fine for me mate, im on .29 if that helps, could you uninstall them and get them back from google play???

Like I said I never had to do a cold reboot for those apps, and I have for some games. But, so far on 30 haven't had the need to.

This would be nice in the thread I made! Some people, like myself might not be convinced that a reset can fix a lot of problems (besides the GPS related ones) and need a little extra convincing.

I've been contemplating on doing a full reset.
@kolyan, did you keep the stock GPS settings or did you change it out after the reset? I'm curious....
Can you list other improvements you've noticed?
All I can say about this is I wiped my phone to prep it for exchange tomorrow, since some were reporting success with different phones. I was having horrid gps issues. Navigate, pre-wipe was taking 5 minutes or more, before it locked and stopped searching for gps. When I tried it after the wipe, it took a few seconds. Not to be beaten so easily, I rebooted and tried again. It again worked quickly. I've been randomly checking all day and the longest it has taken is maybe 20 seconds. Pre-wipe, that never happened. There may be merit to this if it hasn't been tried. Don't know if it will work for everyone, but it certainly worked for me. At least for my gps issues (fingers crossed).
BTW, I had all my apps backed up (146, I just looked) and everything went back fine. Took a while for the restore, but it looks just as it did before the wipe. I never restore system settings, so I had to do it manually, but it was worth it.
Before anyone asks, my compass is still pooched...
Perhaps we should also realize that the bug with the compass might be caused by the app.

so far GPS is stock, but i dont use it much so i dont know the best settings here
GUI was a bit slow (loading here, loading there), had some minor FC (like when adding picture to contact, had to do it from desktop, in phone i got FC), Engadget widget didnt work 100% (back button had to be double clicked, single click didnt work), in launcher all widgets kept reloading (LauncherPro fixed this, but after reset it work like a charm in stock launcher as well), also had multi-tasking issue and now its gone....
Just wondering, What did you use for backup/restore?

i used to use Titanium backup, but i noticed that some (not all) apps didnt work correctly when restored, so I prefer to do everything manually to make sure everything works
Titanium Backup for me. It took a long time to go back, but it all seemed to work well. I haven't found anything broken because of it yet. Before this phone I would get broken market links and I'd have to restore app data twice sometimes, but it seems to be working well so far.
Also, as far as the rest goes. I am getting less stalling, but it's still there. It also fixed an issue I picked up with Quadrant somewhere along the line where it would hang during the i/o test. Another strange one was if I had gps in use, I could put my phone to sleep by turning it 180 degrees a couple times. That went away.
Just noticed facebook won't sync after the reset... Not sure what that's about.

YES!!! today I noticed when using a different micro usb cable the computer could not find the phone maybe just maybe the configurations are different for these samsung phones. Just because the third party apps don't show an accurate reading doesn't mean they don't find you. I have had NO gps problems in ANY application, I listed somewhere else 6 different applications all worked fine and found me and lead me in the right direction.

I agree with that, for sure. It seems after playing with Android for over a year, I think a lot has to do with data integrity. I've many times rebuilt by hand and installed all my bazillion apps by hand after a wipe and had it work fine. Backup, reset. It's worth a shot. Most of us are here to tinker and learn. Can't do that without some pain!

Oh, I thought you were talking about my crack about the compass. It needs a fix. The only issue I have with that train of thought, is when you use the dialer code to get into the gps settings and run the gps test in there, it doesn't care what the data stream looks like for the most part. It's looking directly at the gps/driver for it's info. It locks when it locks. I don't know, it's making my brain hurt.
When you say Reset are you talking a wipe from recovery or a Reset from inside the phone that basically sets the phone up for a new user?

I think it's the same? Not verified' but when I did it from the phone menu in settings, it rebooted into recovery and automatically deleted data, system and I think cache. Not sure exactly because I wasn't paying attention as I wasn't expecting it. It also flashed something. Maybe someone that's trying it could do both and see if there is a difference?

i believe some cables are charge only (like a lot of motorola cables) and others are charge/data cables - i went looking for a 180 degree adaptor (micro usb) and found them listed as 5 pin and 14 pin cables - suspect the other 9 pins are data transfer
very glad i did this reset...made a world of difference
People are mentioning back-up. All my contacts are obviously on my Google account, and I don't have any saved games or anything. Does Android let us re-download purchased apps after a phone reset? Would seem kind of dumb to not have that option.

[Q] stange problems

Im having just weird issues with my Facinate here, it was rooted, and worked just fine.
I began removing applications, and removed Gtalk, which after some searching was a bad idea. So Android Market doesnt work.
So i used a factory restore, and made everything worse. No Apps, and need to setup everything again.
But this time around im getting 2 more errors...
"com.sec.android.app.setupwizard"
"com.google.process.Gapps"
Both processes lock-up on initial boot. and now my Home button and Menu hard buttons are not responding...
so im pretty boned up...
any ideas guys ?

[Q] Acer logo.... then blank screen???????

my a500 has a bad habit of going to a blank screen after the Acer logo.
I have to use a clip to do a hard reset to reboot it.
After that the Android screen comes up after the Acer logo.
What is going on??

any ideas??

How long does the black screen last? Have you ever tried waiting it out? How long does it stay that way before you reset it?
If it gets stuck, that is definitely not normal and I would do a factory reset, 2x if necessary. If it still happens after that? Exchange or send it for repair because that shouldn't be happening.
FYI, this same thing happens to me after i rooted and added CWM but tried to boot with no SD card installed. May not be the same as what you are doing, but i thought it was worth sharing.

I left it on for 10 minutes and it was still a blank screen.
I should mention this device was rooted.
Would that be a factor?
I'm experieng this since yesterday. A501 with stock rom rooted with IconiaBreak. Hard resetting fixes it.
Update: unrooting fixes the issue, it seems. Can someone confirm?
It would be easy to point fingers at a custom ROM being the culprit but since nobody is using one then it's tough to diagnose.
If a hard reset fixes it, I would reexamine the apps you're installing and avoid using 'bad' apps from 'questionable' places. You can start by only loading up approved and confirmed working apps from the marketplace. If the problem doesn't come back then you can test by installing your 'other' apps and testing - you might find the offender.
I don't see how rooting can have this effect.

It seems a lot strange to me too, but I had no root applications, just Superuser.apk... Later I will try to root it again and see if the problem comes back. By the way, could the device being an A501 instead of an A500 be a factor?

Working solution for random boot issues

So this morning I got a call from a friend who told me that his TF is running like crap after doing OTA upgrade to ICS.
We met up at school and I got to take a look at it. Yes, it was indeed running like crap and it even randomly rebooted while we were eating breakfast. He told me the random reboots were happening every 3-5 hours(that he could notice).
Here's what I did to fix it.
Removed his MicroSD card(not sure if necessary)
Shut down TF.
Hold [volume down] and [power] button together until you get into reset mode with 2 icons in the center of screen. Left icon is Wipe Data. Right icon is Cold boot. Right icon is selected by default.
Press [volume down] to highlight the LEFT ICON, which is Wipe Data.
Press [volume up] to confirm your selection
Go through the process.
Let your TF reboot.
Shut down TF again.
Hold [volume down] and [power] button together until you get into reset mode with 2 icons in the center of screen.
You need to do cold boot. It's already selected by default so just wait like 10 seconds and it will happen automatically. Press [volume up] if you don't want to wait.
Go through the process. Your TF will reboot afterwards.
Done.
It has been over 24 hours and his TF has been running smooth without any glitches or any random reboot. I told him to let me know immediately if a random reboot happens again.
This is simple to do. Worth trying unless you can't read English.
Edit: I didn't include this at first because I thought it would be common sense for everyone but it apparently isn't....
DO NOT JUST RESTORE ALL YOUR PREVIOUS APPS AND WIDGETS YOU HAD FROM HONEYCOMB. THAT DEFEATS THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF DOING A RESET AND PREVENTING APP INCOMPATIBILITY.
thnx man for sharing . I actually tried every thing to solve this issue but no luck , I'll try your as sson as i go home .
This did indeed work for me as well. I tried this a couple days ago and I have yet to have any freezes or random reboots. I think that not restoring any backed up data, apps or settings is key to fixing the problem. I'm now very happy with ICS- burn in hell Honeycomb.
Shameful bump
When you switch from a version like HC. This is what you exactly should do!
I did this and never experienced random reboots.
My Transformer is running since three days and everything works fine!
Edit:
Another quick hint:
If you want to work with Google Docs, you have to disable Forced Hardware Rendering!
I see on forum the problem is google+
So I removed google+... Wait and see...

.....lol, why post in this thread that you are not going to follow the advice of the Op?.......
Sorry to say but this is not working, already done this since the minute it was out and still have so now and then a hang boot
(random reboots that hangs on the boot)
Giving it a try
I am experiencing random reboots after ICS
Wiped transformer, cold booted, and installed the following.
Adobe Reader
Dog Catcher
updated G+ and GMail but have not run it.
Charging now, I will let you know.
Previously I had wiped it and reinstalled all, disabled syncing, disabled location info, adjusted wi-fi settings, and added CPU throttle control obviously none worked.
It might have helped some people, but it did not help me. Unless it was dogcatcher.
5 or so minutes after unhooking it from the charger, I tried to wake it. And it was unresponsive. Was only able to wake it by holding down the vol down and power button at the same time.
I will kill off Dogcatcher and try again but it is not looking so good.

why are you installing dogcatcher? And this does work.. do it again. Don't install your apps.enusre it dos not lock up before you install anything.... If it locks up before you install any apps then call Asus. If not start installing one app at a time. Wait after each install. Ensure that its not doing it, once you are sure install Another ....rinse/repeat....
I installed dogcatcher because I needed something to listen to on the way in to work. I have uninstalled it. But I doubt that is the issue.
I have had these sorts of reboots on my Transformer until the third or fourth Honeycomb update. But eventually they fixed it. I suspected this would happen again.
Considering that dogcatcher one of the most popular podcast apps on the market I suspect that there are many people with no problems using it just fine.
But since I need a podcast listener to be able to use the device as I want to, does anyone without issues have a podcast listener that they use?
2 hours into the last experiment and it died again while sleeping.
So that about sums it up. This procedure might help with some issues Transformer's are having but not all.
Recap. Wiped, cold booted, gmail setup, G+ updated still equals failure.
I love how horndroid 'solved' this issue and then goes on the belittle people who are still having it as 'stupid', and probably their own fault. Horndroid, I appreciate your attempt to contribute, but your attitude and stabbing-in-the-dark protocol is not becoming nor helpful to anyone. Definitive statements pertaining to ONE TF101 device that you own are quite naive, there are several different models, and until you have personal access to each model version you should advertise your 'solutions' as "worked for ME", and understand if it doesn't work with others it isn't THEIR fault..this is not a blanket solution for every device's reboot problems. In fact, I am willing to bet the reboots being resolved by this method are of an entirely different genesis than the reboots that I and others are experiencing (hang-boots).
I hear what you are saying I have the reboot issue as well.
I did a reset before and after and only installed xda HD and ran it for 2 days and got 3 reboots so I did the cold boot and then it did it 2 more times that day. Earlier today I almost couldn't get out of the boot loop, so I wouldn't say its a app problem its something wrong with the firmware somewhere

Some aren't too lazy we just don't want to wipe data after every update. I think i have gotten 4? OTA updates and 2 of them screwed up deep sleep while docked. Guess what the first trouble shooting step was...wipe data. Guess what worked...the next OTA. I don't have time to read through all the different threads on the same subject but are people that flashed through cmw instead of ota having the same issue? My buddy went this route and has no issues.

Can't read horndroid's "advice", because I have him on ignore for trolling, and have done for ages. From the tone of other posts here, it seems the "solution" is to wipe; if that's actually the case, it's total BS.
I wiped immediately before upgrading to ICS, wiped again afterwards, and have put almost no programs back on. I am and always have been on stock firmware and unrooted. I had no problems with boot loops, no problems with lockups, and only extremely rare problems with spontaneous reboots using Honeycomb. With ICS, I have had all three problems in a matter of days, and the lockups / spontaneous reboots are fairly regular (1-2 times per day.)
This is a problem with the stock rom, not a user app problem.

I reported him for verbal abuse and foul language. His attitude is not helpful, and if I were a mod he'd be gone already to think long and hard about his conduct. Anyways, taken your advice and blocked him. It is obviously an issue with the ROM, I'm beginning to think it has something to do with deep sleep, others posited that it may be media scanner, maybe combination of both? Maybe these two events are trying to happen at once and it doesn't like it.. a stab in the dark at least..

It's hilarious how you think YOUR problem is the only problem that everyone is experiencing.
For a lot of people, it was the app incompatibility that was causing them issues.
Obviously you think your problems are caused by something different, but that doesn't mean there are different problems caused by other reasons.
While all of you are speculating, at least I've posted a solution(even though it's merely doing a data wipe and cold boot, pretty much common sense) that has been proven to work for a lot of people. I've never claimed it will work for everyone; just those having problems due to app incompatibility.
I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the update itself and all these "fixes" are going to be pointless in a little while when an actual fix is released by Asus.

GPS issue.... Won't hold lock

Has anyone else been experiencing GPS not holding lock or not locking at all? There are tons of people having the problem in the Google groups.... Surprising to not see more about it here..... Let's get the word out if you do.... Mine will not keep a lock no matter what.... Many resets and other nonsense.... It will sometimes lock but loose it on the move or just drop the lock without moving....
Here are some of the fixes that have been tried / tested:
resetting back to stock
removing google services
downgrading maps
changing settings for WIFI
user data wipe
clear cache
Some of those may temporarily fix it, but any sort of long term use the issue always comes back.

yeah, there are been several people that "claim" to have fixed it but... it's not really fixed. there have been many different "solutions" thrown around over in the groups but, again none of them worked long term. it might work for a little while, but not for very long. anyone that has a N7 i suggest you test it out.... Try bringing up maps, cache the offline map and try to use the GPS to navigate somewhere.... It will drop off everytime.
Google is going to have to release a patch, that is going to be the only fix!!

so... what's the deal here. I don't see how more people aren't having this problem with the responses on the google site. have people been successful using it? or do u not use it at all anyway? or is it because you have a ROM that it works on? please let me know.
My temporary solution (as suggested by others) is to ONLY allow 1 app which may access GPS.
So I disabled Earth, Maps, GPS Tester (some widgets may use GPS too) ... only leave Sygic navigator. I've navigated a few long drives without issue. Re-enable those apps will bring back troubles.
This works with different ROMs, so it's not a ROM problem.
Hopefully Google will have a fix soon.
yeah, that only seems to work for a short period of time too! thanks though!
well, at least it's out in the open now and it will force googles hand!

I haven't touched Google services, just simply disabled (GPS-accessing) apps such as Maps, Earth, GPS Tester.
I only left one app (Sygic) on my Tab. The last few days, I've had no issue with GPS navigation. Everytime I've tried,
I got GPS locks within a few seconds. I've done a few drives (mostly under 1-hr) and everything is normal and accurate.
I've not seen it fail yet.
It isn't 'failing' at start, necessarily. It won't keep lock after stopping and starting.
Can you enter address. navigate to the address. Stop and them do it again?

It isn't 'failing' at start, necessarily. It won't keep lock after stopping and starting.

Like going to work ... going to lunch .. going home .. I fired up the app fresh (I clear recent apps often)
haha.. I had quite a few struggles since day one, so I know how to make it fail.
I can start-close/stop-restart Sygic multiple times without failing. But if I re-enable those (GPS) apps and
switch between them ---> GPS no-longer works.
I have never had a issue using Osmand GPS yesterday. Locked on quickly each time after device was put to sleep about 5 times in a moving car ( i was the passenger at the time).
joined the forum to say i'm having the same issue with GPS (and possibly compass). looks like google is aware so that is at least good.
bought the tablet to use in an in-dash car install. loved it until yesterday and today when i started doing more in car function testing. wanted to test the google maps app out out while driving but the compass oriented me cocked in the wrong direction and spun around like a dradle before gps lost me completely. for a bit i thought omg, maybe it's so cheap because they got rid of the GPS chip.
i have to say i hate the google maps application right now too. the old google navigation app was incredible for "chase view" which gave you. the new google maps app is supposed to integrate the nav feature but you must be on a specified route. it's terrible, going to search for the old APK.

thanks! just downloaded and will try it out (once this gps issue gets fixed).
Suggestion to try by others.
"Go into settings, all apps, locate ‘network location’, clear cache, clear data, reboot and try using GPS again. Seen this behavior on another device where it didn’t like the backed up app data restored from the previous device."
NONE of the "fixes" are permanent. As soon as you start moving it loses your location, even if it hold it for an hour.... IT WILL eventually drop out again. All these "fixes" are a waste of time, i have done every single one posted in all teh forums they have talked about N7s. and it ALWAYS goes back to not working again.
it's just frustrating to have a brand new device that doesn't work properly, and then on top of it to do all these silly fixes and research for none of them to work either. bout to take it back and say forget it.

In the official forum of Google, they are one person that use cyanogen whiteout problems.
Appears that there is a software problem.

Useless!!!! I was out on the bike all day and this thing acted up all day. At one point it got stuck on the x after rebooting for no reason. I ended up using my SGSIII as a GPS. I guess I need an BT GPS. I know people say hey mine is working but I just can't believe it really is. Or mine sucks.
