So I was laying on my bed watching TV when I noticed that very distinct smell of burnt electronics. I have a lot of electronics in my room, so I got up and started checking each power cable and device and couldn't initially identify the source. I laid back down and the smell went away, then it came back with a vengeance. So I was eventually able to trace it to my TF. I did NOT have it plugged in to AC power. No physical mods or overclocking have been done to the system.
After inspecting my dock and transformer, I found that the smell emanated from the left side dock connector on the dock as well as the power port on the dock. On the pad, the only noticeable damage was just to the left of the lower left side of the screen where the left side dock connector connects. It started to burn or melt whatever it is under the screen. It's difficult to say whether the pad or the dock or both is at fault for this. But my guess would be the dock.
Both are having to be replaced. I am still within my in-store return, however, best buy is having to order and ship it because they don't have any 16GB models left.

These babys can pull alot of amperes while charging, as evidenced by the scorching hot charging adapters and short recharge times.
My guess is that either the dock announced itself as a charger somehow (or however that works) or the tablet "thought" it was charging from an adapter (or however THAT works).
Edit: Or someone cast a lvl 10 fireball on your preciousss.

I wonder if this is an issue in related to the TF300 drawing power while docked in sleep mode (unplugged)?
I have had two of each and still the same issue. Both have the newest firmware and in both cases drained the batteries and were warm while in sleep mode while docked for the night. Weird.

Just got my pad and dock back from Asus repair in the Czhech Republic. Pad refuses to turn on or reset or anything. Dock no longer shows any light when connected to charger. Pad no longer powers on when connected to charger or through the dock.
The charger does not even get warm.
When I sent it off all that was wrong was the left speaker died. I did not attach it to the dock as it comes bundled with the dock unattached. When it got here it was attached to the dock and had been like that since at least Friday when it was shipped!
I now have an expensive brick.
Also the UK support phone number does not work!
Well that's f'ed up. I know it's quite annoying, but how about sending it in again? Or send it in and ask for your money back if you have enough. Can't think of many options here...

Yeah I don't get it. At least when I had it it was working. Even with one dead speaker. It seems odd that both the dock and the pad are not working. The fact I do not get a charge LED on the dock is also strange. I wonder if they are both just discharged and my charger has died so cannot recharge them. If I could charge from the USB port on my PC at least I could tell that way. But I tried connecting it to the PC and it does not even give a hint of recognition. I have opened an RMA both with Asus and Ebuyer where I purchsed it from and will see who gets back to me first.
EDIT: Ebuyer got to me first. They do not have any in stock so I am returning it for a refund. Hopefully if all goes smoothly I may go to my nearest store and buy from there as it's easier to return a faulty item to a store and the price is the same wherever you buy it from over here in the UK.

Are you sure it isn't just the charger that is broken? Maybe the pad and dock are out of power (which is why pad doesn't turn on), and because the charger is broke, this is why its not charging them. Like you say, the charger isn't even getting warm.

The charger only gets warm when it is delivering current to the dock. If the charge circuit doesn't go into the charge mode, the charger will not get warm. based on the dozens of posts here, if the TF is docked for any period of time and not plugged in, it will kill the battery and once totally dead, they appear to no accept a charge.

No, not for very long before the dock's battery completely drains and dies (possibly forever).
It is terrible, enough for me to tell everyone I know not to buy a Tf.
I like many people was having issues where the AC adapter would randomly stop charging my tablet. Someones it would start working again soon after and sometimes almost an entire day would go by before it started working again.
Tried the freezer trick with no results. Was going to send it back to Asus when I noticed 2 things.
1. The adapter was very not every time it stopped charging.. hotter than it usually gets when functioning correctly.
2. It only ever stops charging when i'm using a usb 3.0 extension cable.
To test this i stopped using the extension able for about 2 weeks and the adapter functioned properly the entire time. Then last night I reconnected the extension cable and within 5 minutes of of being plugged in charging stopped and the adapter was extremely hot. This obviously leads me to believe that the extension cable is in some way effecting the adapters voltage or something and causing it to malfunction. So I'm curious as to how many of the others who having issues are also using extension cables.
Not the voltage the current the more current it has to push the hotter its going to get and the chargers for these are not designed for extensions they where designed to be small and charge the tf even then there at there limit

I also was having trouble with over heating and have been using an 3.0 extension cable. I will stop using it and report back.

its a design flaw with the ac addapters and its one of the reasons that the cable that ships with the transformer is so short
I was just using the cable as is with no extension and it died on my twice. I now have it rigged up to charge from my PC's PSU and only use the adapter when I'm not at my house.
My charger melted my damn usb cable. Thats how hot it got..
I wasnt using the extension cable at the time.
The adaptor would always warm up, which i read was normal. A few days ago, however, i felt some heat on the cable itself.When i reached to the connector, i noticed it had literally melted the rubber casing off the wire.

Just had my second charger die on me! I was charging my Dock and Tablet during class from 2:50-4:10 and when I unplugged it the charger was pretty hot. I went back home and connected the TF to my rigged up PSU charger and then went to class at 6:10 and plugged in the charger and unsurprisingly it wouldn't charge!

Ive heard reports of people solving these problems by swapping round the mains pins ( I guess only in countries that use 2 pin outlets, UK have 3 )
I am sure this will sound nuts but, put the wall charger in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Please do not forget the plastic bag. There is a thermal heat fuse inside the brick that needs to be reset. If it is still working the cold will make it reconnect and bring the brick back to working order.
You should make a DIY charger by following "DevCake" thread on DIY AC and DC chargers for the TF.

I just do not understand why we would have to go out of our way for their crappy idea of a charger. I understand the idea of not allowing aftermarket chargers because they want the money for the chargers but i mean if you do that then at least make something worth having besides giving us a heater...does this remind anyone of the rrod( red ring of death) for the xbox... to much of a hurry to send out their product they didnt really test EVERY aspect of their device...this makes me sad..and then need to send it back and what not taking up more of our time then not being able to use the tablet because your chargers going back... i wish customer service was better....that is all

but i have found that if you charge the dock and tab separately there are no problems with the adapter. and besides charging while the tab is docked into the keyboard is kinda a waste as its charging the keyboard dock, and at the same time its discharging and trying to charge the tab at the same time. hence causing the strain on the adapter.
besides charging both at once will just kill the keyboard dock in the long run

Mine doesn't speed charge my Transformer even without the extension cable. Maybe I'll do some testing with that though and check the heat, since the damn thing doesn't work anymore anyways. Though I might not get any results because of that

There are many problems with the charger, many different problems.
I barely use my dock, so I have only been charging my TF standalone. Still stopped working though late last week.
Hmmm, issues here as well...
Charger stopped working at times and then start working again... Now it's not working and sticks with that plan. Pluggin in the charger with the TF turned off makes it boot so something IS happening, it doesn't charge though.
Luckily I have another charger (no original asus but using another adapter + usb-cablethingie) so I can atleast charge it, but still. Was thinking of buying another asus adapter (the travelpack) but really doubting it now if it's a general issue.
Will try the freezer trick anyway and some other stuff... Quite annoying though (for an otherwise excellent product).
i thought the accessories that comes with the TF are all covered under a one year warranty?
and the problem with the adapters suddenly dying is probably the capacitors in the charger or the stepdown transformer in it anyone had a chance to open one yet?

An Asus UK tech support guy actually told me not to charge both the tablet and dock at the same time. Pretty poor if you ask me. They just went silent when I pushed the matter.
They have compromised the design in their desire to make a fashionably tiny charger.

Actually it is charging, but not with the voltage it requires for the "quick charge". Mine does the same thing. If you turn off the screen or turn off the TF and leave it plugged in, it charges at ~3%/hour. Not very useful if you're a heavy user but better than nothing until you get a new charger.
I may be really lucky: the only time I've ever had a failure to charge, has been fixed by taking off the plug and snapping it back.

Now you mention this, it indeed does... slow but it does charge. Damnit, luckily I have another charger but this annoys the crap out of me.

Then I'll contact Asus I guess and get it RMA'ed. Going to try and get some free shipping out of them. Sometimes I am successful sometimes not haha

I've seen this when charging on a plane. I assume it has something to do with the voltage being supplied.
Are you using some kind of third party charger? These have been known to cause problems on any sort of technology.
I have seen this on my wifes tf once before, never on mine or my spare...
But with 50% of my micro USB cables it will happen on my infuse... Most frequently while charging in the car. The issue seemed to be a combination of crappy cables and crappy chargers and heat... If my phone was hot it was far more likely to occur than if it was cold. I haven't charged my phone via a plug on months though, I have 4 batteries I rotate, keeping 3 charged at all times

I think it's a voltage thing. Im a long distance courier and i have an ac adapter in my van. When charging through a regular wall socket everything is fine. Yet when plugged into my inverter the screen is not responsive, as soon as i unplug it is fine. I typically use my tablet for netflix while im on the road. So i usually end up pressing play then plug it in. My inverter is rather weak, i was thinking of buying a higher output to see if it corrected things.
This post doesn't really help you, just letting you know you're not alone. If you can't charge while plugged into a wall socket, perhaps your charger is defective and is not sending out the proper current?

Hmm. Most likely its my third party power adapter. It's odd that the transformer won't allow variations in voltage. I've never had an issue with any device in the past 10 years using third party power adapters. Guess I'll have to spring for a 30 dollar asus charger . Thanks for the input guys.

Happens on Nook Color too.
Sometimes it's not just unresponsive, it's erratic and causes touch events to register all over the screen for no reason. These happen only when plugged in so I assume there's some voltage issue.

This is a warning for people whom the charger is overheating : it's a serious problem and can damage your tablet.
I've noticed this problem since the beginning, and didn't pay too much attention, but yesterday when I tried to disconnect
the connector to use my tablet, I didn't understand why it was soo hard to disconnect it... The charger connector has melted
inside the tablet connector ! And I've burnt my thumb while disconnecting them !
Result : The tablet is working but don't charge anymore. Some tablet connector pins are damaged.
I need to charge it through the dock to use it again (seems that the charging pins when using through the dock
is different from the damaged one).
I've been using my TF101 tablet for a year and two month : do you think that RMA is still possible ? The tablet is
out of warranty for two months. Just hoping that Asus will take their responsability on this problem...

This hasn't happened to me, luckily, but my charger has become very hot at times. If I notice it get hot, I unplug it, but unfortunately it has damaged my USB cable.
If I pull the USB cable by the USB connector, the casing slides back and the wiring is visible. I have to unplug the USB cable by pulling on the actual cord to ensure the casing doesn't come off of the USB connector.
I'm fairly certain that normal heat didn't cause that much damage. I would bet that there was a short somewhere in order for that to happen.

As much as my charger becomes hot I don't think that heat would melt the charger. Maybe the hot sun ray was directly on your tablet??

My chageer block gets pretty warm, the connector on he other hand doesn't. Was it buried under a blanket or something when you charged it?
I personally would be sending an email to Asus with this picture attached telling them the damage that occured.Mine gets hot but that is insane.I'm pretty sure that that is a default that they might help you out with.I mean think of the pr nightmare "your tablet could burn your house down" not a good headline for your product.

If you have Overclocked CPU too much.. you will face overheating.
Dont use your tablet while charging. Switch off WIFI/ 3G networks while charging.
Dont run any app while charging.
OR
Lower your CPU OC.
You wont face overheating problem.

Luckily Asus replaced it.
Asus TFT 101 charger had an overheating protection so i think the reason of melting the cable is either a malfuction of overheating protection or a short circuit.
The tablet is not rooted, was not under the sun, and my nexus s was charging on the same outlet in the same time without any problem. There is a defect with my charger and I have already noticed that the cable itself was hot during charging. My tablet was used under normal condition and with the latest firmware (reset done few weeks ago) I will try to contact Asus directly.

yesterday a new cable arrived at my home, i just tested it and everything was fine!
but... =( with my amazing luck...
I had that overheating problem as well but like many of you i didn't pay that much of attention because its suppose to have sensors to avoid that melting and stuff..
I was downloading a game and using utorrent... and i let it charge that way...
in the morning i wake up and the charged was smelling like burned and i couldnt turn on my TFT101.
I have 2 guesses now:
1. charger went straight to hell from wher it came
2. my nice tablet died...

When I plug my dock in I get resistance feedback on the surface of the dock. If I touch the dock by the mouce pad, it give feedback like there is a power leak or current running through my fingers a fuzzy feeling.
Does anyone else get that?
If my Tab is docked it has the same feedback if I touch the side edges. If I undock it only is on the Dock.
If I plug the power into the tab it doesn't have this issue.

This might be my power drain issue. As my dock battery drains fast from the first day I had it. Even when the power is off and the tab is undocked, the dock drains.
I sometimes get that, too. but only when connected to the charcher and only in the edges of the dock.

I think there is a short or something else. I have felt this before when I was younger our stove had a short/leak and if you where touching the stove and opened the fridge you get this feed back.

Can't say that I've ever felt any issue with the dock but I do have the battery drain. If I leave it off the charger for a day or two, even if it is completely shut off both the dock and tablet batteries will be dead. A few months ago I sent it in for RMA. Took several weeks for them to send it back. I had a horrible experience getting it into Asus for repair. They replaced one part but was very vague at what they found. Now the only difference is that it drains just a little slower. I can probably get three days off the charger now.
If that Samsung Nexus 10 becomes reality next week this tablet will be given to a family member!

TF101 eee pad dock issue
I have the same issue .When i plug it in i feel current flow with the edge of my figures like a pulse.
I feel it either connected or not .In the second occation only from the dock.
Now to drain issue . When the dock and the tablet is fully charged ,connected and turned off , the battery goes out into 3 days . If they are apart there is no drain issue to any of them.
Also the tablet turns on every time i plug in the charger, by itself no matter if it is connected to dock or not.
There are several threads according to this issue and the conclusion is that responsible is an IO chipset in the dock.
Normally Asus had should announce a repair report with no warranty limits.
