Hi guys, I'm using darky note, gingerbread version, I have been very happy with it for months.
Today I got a notification of a Samsung OTA update to ICS. is it safe for me to do an official update over a rooted note with a.flashed ROM?

If you're just rooted on stock firmware, you can update, although you will most likely lose your root. Remember not to use factory reset while on ICS.
If you're on custom firmware and somehow got OTA notification, do not attempt to update.

Hi all,
We all know JB is coming soon, or at least, we hope
My phone has just returned from assistance and then i decided to remain on stock rom, but i have rooted it
My question is: is possible to have official JB update if i restore the stock, unrooted, kernel?
Thanks

Im using stock galaxy s3 rom, too. with root. and i was able to update via Samsung Kies without any problems. then rooted again. Don't know if it will be different for JB tho. but i guess it will be the same.

but you reverted to a stock kernel or kies updated also with rooted one?
Root = no or failed OTA update .
But should update via Kies .
Root is lost .

It will flash with root OTA or through Kies. At least it does for me.

I updated my rooted stock rom via kies without any problems. But not JB of course. Some other ICS update some weeks ago. It worked without problems, i just had to re-root again.

If your system status indicates "modified" you can't do OTA, just via kies. you may have this status, as do I, after flashing via Odin, and even after using triangle away.

Really? The status shows modified even after using triangle away? Then we wouldn't get repair in case of trouble right?

I just Kies-updated my SGS3 international to JB after being rooted running stock ICS 4.0.4. Now it runs 4.1.1 but is no longer rooted. OTA did not report ugrade available. At least it did not yet before Kies did its job.
So here is a sample that a rooted ICS can be upgraded just like you did with the same side effects.
Newbie here. I rooted the S4 a couple of months ago. Now that 4.3 is out, can experts post some step-by-step guide on how to upgrade it on rooted devices? Thanks.
Are you sure you want to update? Why not just flash a 4.3.1 rom to your device instead and stock to AMDL firmware.
However if it hasn't manually updated to MF3 you can go into your settings and search for updates, or it should automatically update on it's own. The only thing that would prevent it would be if you've flashed a non TW based ROM, changed the framework + kernel, or froze there processes needed to update. Just a stand alone root won't prevent it.

I am not on MF3. I tried to install the AT&T minor update before, but it failed twice. I did freeze some stock apps. If I unfreeze those apps, the automatic update should work then? That's very good to know. Thanks!

Just to be clear you never got/took the OTA update to mf3?
If you still have the mdl bootloader then you will be able to update to a new rom that is based off the new att firmware MJ6 soon. I would wait until a good rom is out to flash rather than getting any OTA update. Once you go to mf3 firmware you cannot go back to a previous firmware and you are limited on what can be flashed to your phone. If you take the new OTA (whenever att actually releases it) you will be stuck on that firmware and not able to go back to a previous firmware.
So like in my situation I have the mdb or mdl bootloader still, rooted, and I can flash any rom I want whether it is a mdl/mf3/ international firmware/ or when available the MJ6 firmware. All of this is harder/not able to do if you ever get OTA updates.

I never got the MF3 update. As I mentioned, I did try it twice, but the update failed, either because I froze some apps, or because I installed the CWM custom recovery. It's good to hear that it is actually a good thing. I noticed that the 4.3 firmware is out (the general forum), should I just install that one? How should I start? Thanks.

What until one of the devs creates a flashable zip that you can flash in cwm. It'll probably be only a couple of days now that the leak is out.
Just a quick question, if I unroot my Note 3 SM-n900W8 and flash back to stock with Odin, will this re-enable OTA Updates? Or is the OTA Update permanently disabled? I know if I went back to stock with Odin on my S3 it would re-enable OTA Updates, but I am unsure if it is the same with the Note 3. Just asking because I want to update to 4.4 when it releases for the Note 3.

Yeah should be fine for ota
Would the OP's process trip the KNOX counter?

Why wouldn't you just ownload the new firmware from sammobile and flash with MP?
Retain root and still upgrade...
for years, the first thing i did when i got a new phone was root it and install a new ROM.
Now things seem to be different for me.
i immediately rooted my phone but regret not researching this phone and Android 4.3 and 4.4 better before rooting.
i noticed a lot of the roms require that you flash the leaked KitKat. i tried to do this but it fails every time. So i figured i will just stick to what i have now and wait until the official OTA update.
Well that can't be done since i rooted my phone.
Now for my questions.
Do i need KitKat before installing CarbonROM and if not can i install this instead of the leaked ROM as a prerequisite to other 4.4 based ROMs?
Is it plausible, and perhaps better, to wait for an official KitKat firmware to be downloadable from XDA?
Is there anyway i can get OTA to work again on my rooted device?
Is it worth going all the way back to stock ROM and unrooted device just for OTA release of KitKat?
Is that even possible now that KNOX has been tripped?
Thanks in advance.
Any CM based rom still requires JELLY BEAN'S Boot loader.. so if you want CM/CARBON/AOSB etc then do not upgrade to 4.4.2

just upgraded from 4.3 official to 4.4 official...the update removed root..HOW DO I GET IT BACK? i don't want to wipe & iv tried Kingo root. what do i need to do!
There is no way currently to root the official update. That is why Beans and others said to wait on taking the official update until the devs looked at it.
