i have my SGS3 rooted and other than freezing some of the apps I've not installed any custom rom.
today I got a alert that there's a new firmware that I can update so I let it download the firmware, and when the phone rebooted to install the firmware it says installation fail.
is it due to the insecure kernel that I've flashed (for the rooting)? What do I have to do to update the firmware? mine is DXLE8
Mine is also rooted but via cf root and I got no problems updating to LF6. but I am updated via KIES and not via OTA.

You can try unrooting the phone using the directions at this website
http://www.epiccm.org/
Numerous posts will tell you root = failed firmware upgrade during the install process .

Hello,
I've bought S4 few days ago. Out of the box I was running with stock firmware without rooting or CWM. Yesterday I've rooted the device and flashed CWM. Few hours later I thought that I'll be better off with stock firmware and updates available on time. But here's the problem: I cannot make OTA work anymore. I've flashed AMDE, the firmware which was out of the box (I have BOOTLOADER, PDA, MODEM, CSC and pit file). I've unrooted and flashed stock recovery. Whole device is official (Status: Official, Binary: Official, Settings > About device: Official) and flash counter is reset to 0 with TriangleAway. Still, after flashing stock firmware, it OTA still says "Newest updates already installed, while this firmware is 2 months old. Out of the box installed updates just fine. CSC is set to XEO as I live in Poland. I have no idea what to do next
Thanks in advance.

It just checks the update and acts like I have the newest one installed. Not "System modified" or something else, just there are no updates for me like I would have AMEA/BMF8 installed already, while I have AMDE.

buddy MF8 is latest one. If OTA will be available to your country it won't say "You already have latest firmware installed".

I've flashed AMDE like said earlier. But I do not receive AMEA update, which was possible when I bought the device. AMDE is way older than AMEA.
Kies also does not want to update my device. It shows my PDA: AMDE and CSC XEO but "Your device does not support update over the KIES". Everything has status "official" with flash counter 0, but acts like modified. It's annoying.

In the last, I would say, please let it updated using ODIN. Download the latest firmware of your zone & flash it using ODIN.
I had this problem with an s2 ages ago. Turned out I needed to reflash stock firmware and the csc. The problem is usually a mismatch between pda/cdc/phone but its working out which is wrong. Best bet is samfirmware site. Find the latest for your region and and carrier if its branded then flash that and try again

Well, the problem is that I work at Samsung's R&D and I have full packages ready to flash but non of them fix the OTA updates, and I cannot contact the developer responsible for OTA module
Thanks anyway.

Today XDA achieved best one here. Samsung's R&D officials asking help for their device. No offence.

Happens, well thanks anyway for feedback. I'll leave the topic for now as I've already flashed newest and rooted it.
Hey People,
i previously rooted my phone on stock firmware along with changing the kernel. I have no restored and removed root back to stock but i get this message when doing a OTA update as i need the latest update to enable 4G on my phone. It says Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available. How do i go about fixing this? I have done some research and used the triangle app to reset the flash counter which now says Official rather then Custom In download mode? If i flash the firmware does it automatically Re flash my Kernel or is that separate? I have looked for the stock i9505 kernel i Just cant seem to find it.
Will appreciate the help
Thanks

flash stock firmware, stock kernel included
It's normal that it says that. Just install Xposed framework, then Wanam Xposed, there is an option to fake the system status as official and thus you'll be able to update firmware OTA.

Thank you for your answer, but unfortunately I can't use Kies since I use Linux and there is no Kies for Linux. May be another solution like adb?
Have u tried factory reset in stock recovery. I had this when I flashed official fw with odin. Was not untill I reset that the prob went away

I wiped the data, without success, then I flashed everything again with Heindall 1.4.0, then wiped everything again. Now I have official status and should receive OTA updates.
Edit: but after rooting the official status is lost. Now I think this may be normal.
Hi all
I used to be able to flash official firmware using odin when i wanted a clean install and get ota updates.
Recently i have been getting "your device has been modified" when trying to check for updates.
Download mode. System status and binary "custom"
My network providers firmware is MEA and i have been lucky to avoid the knox issue as i have not odin flashed any firmware beyond MGA.
The only thing i have done recently is install foxhound 2 which is on ML1.
I know i can reset it using triangleaway but obviously i would have to root it.
Is there a reason why the bootloader would still show as custom after an official install?
Just concerned incase i need to send it back for repair thats all.
Many thanks for your help

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but if I root my Galaxy Note 3 (N9005, Vodafone Australia), will it still get OTA updates?
I ask because I used to have a HTC Desire HD, and after rooting and installing Cyanogenmod, I tried to put the Nandroid backup of the stock rom back on, which was fine but for some reason wouldn't install the OTA updates. It would tell me there was an update and download it, but would fail to install.
Thanks!

If it does install you will loose root... But I believe if the system is found to be custom in any way it will fail on install of OTA or will actually tell you that the phone has been modified and no updates available for you

Thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity about the HTC Desire HD that has since been given to a less tech-savvy relative, is there a way to unroot so the OTA update will work??
I rooted my N3 3 days after buying and then tried to get an OTA update. It didn't download first, as my phone was set to custom. After using Wanam's setting to "reset" the custom status, I could download the OTA update but couldn't install it.
Basically, with root you can still check if there's an official update available, but you can't install.

Anyone know how it actually tells if the phone has been rooted? Surely there's a way to reset it to unrooted/non-custom state so OTA updates work again...

The boot loader and the os itself scan for certain things such as modified kernel/recovery or installation of busy box.
The Samsung's aren't so bad, you can just flash back the stock rom and factory reset to start getting ota updates again. On htc phones you have to unlock the boot loader to root and its a one way process. Once unlocked you can never get ota updates again.

i have the same problem here, i would like to update MK2 but i cant.
used wanam exposed for fake > failed @ installation.
do i have to unroot or factory reset for update?
i dont want to install a cwm at the moment.
thx
Once you have rooted, the system partition has been modified so Samsung doesnot allow you to OTA update. It checks MD5hash for the consistency. Factory reset doesn't help because it only format userdata partition.
If you r rooted, better go to sammobile.com, download the latest firmware version, copy it to sdcard and flash via Mobile Odin Pro. This way you can keep the old bootloader so you can fallback (downgrade) to the older firmware later.
Thank you.
what is when i tripped the knox count?
Its 0x1 now. I was on new bootloader before.

Ok you have to downlaod the original stock rom and flash with odin.
After that root it again. Everything fine now. knox trigger 0x1 at the moment.

I need to keep Knox at 0x0.
There must be a way of updating.
A couple of people have mentioned downloading from SamMobile and flashing back to stock. If I do this, what happens to twrp?
If twrp stays, I don't want it conflicting with a non-rooted phone (due to flashing stock) and being bricked
U can get upgrade with kiss not OTA but u must install wanamp exposed n change system into official. Its work on rooted stock rom.

Hi, I have a rooted ATT S4 still running on 4.2.2. I've tried several time updating the OS but failed everytime. Is it because my phone is rooted that's why I can't do the update from Setting>More>About device>Software update?

. In order to obtain official OTA firmware your device must be on official firmware first. Best way is to Odin back to stock then take the update, or you can read how to get a rooted version here on XDA. Happy reading & good luck .:good:
so I need to use Odin to unroot my phone. When it's back to the stock firmware I can do the official update. Is that right?
Another question.....if I can get the update done, can I unroot my phone again and restore the backup from TitaniumBackup?
Thanks
