1GB /System Dump? This thing's huge! - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

I'll i'm saying about this one, is... WOW. lol
Big ROM. lol

So... For development reasons... Does anyone have suggestions on how they'd like to see updates to a ROM come?
Full ROM everytime?
Updates via flashable .zip?

I've been an advocate of flashable updates since forever. There is no reason to have to download full roms every time. Its the sloppy way of doing things. If OEMs can do OTAs, so can we. It's not like we're doing nightlies and developing from scratch. These are stock roms for crying out loud. What could possibly be changed that it would require flashing a full rom where roughly 96% of the files are unchanged.

As much as I've been against them in the past, I think flashable updates would be much better. At least until we start seeing LTE. 1gb is pretty ridiculous.

Damages, Fresh 2.0, or Stock 2.1 rom when it RELASED!!1

I know this is a pointless thread.
I dont think I am going with the Sprint 2.1 rom when it is released. I am hoping that Damage, Fresh, or Darch will release something that will put is to shame. For a we know the dev's rom could out beat the upgrade that sprint will soon bring to us. DA DA DAAAAAAA

Just about to say the same thing myself. No offense, but that sounded like a comeback from a middle school kid.
Spokesman, I am trying here. I thought it would be an interesting topic of what to expect in the future when the release of 2.1 is out. Damage and Fresh have given us HTC Hero owners a look of what to expect. Or even maybe something better.
Actually, the builds we have such as DamageControl and Fresh 2.0 are pretty much what we'll have eventually since they're built off of Droid Eris leaks. In case you didn't know, Droid Eris = HTC Hero

I know that. So then what is the point. What do you think if we were to update, that we would be stuck and would be able to Root.
My answer has changed a lot since a week ago. Now, with DC1.0+, I'll wait. It's good enough to fix my worst complaints about 1.5 and the stock ROM, and I now have faith that its .apk and .odex files really will fix the few remaining problems with the independent builds within a matter of days.
Equally important to my willingness to wait is the fact that I no longer have to wipe everything just to upgrade to a slightly newer build that fixes another bug or two. Let's be honest... that gets old really fast. I might still do a complete wipe and reflash a month from now on the theory that it will make everything nice & optimized, but in the meantime it's nice to be able to just reflash and go on instead of being forced to rebuild everything, every single time.
I know how you feel. I flash and reflash pretty much once a week to have a new look on my phone. I used to have the samsung instinct and I hated the hell out of that phone and with the htc hero I am enjoying it.

ummm all those devs will take the official 2.1 release and just customize it to their liking. the base will remain the same.
Will continue to use Fresh 2.0b2 until the new Sprint based rom is available (and the custom roms made from it).
See thats what I am talking about. When the 2.1 builds come I know the devs will make a **** loads times better.

Signal Dampening on Eris + Custom ROMS?

Hello,
I have the leaked 2.1 on my Eris (From Mid-March), and I noticed that where i would have Four bars i usually have 2 or 3 now. Is there a new ROM I can download that will fix this?
Also, Are the custom ROMS better than the leaked Rom? And can someone explain a little better about a custom ROM.
Thanks
if you have the leak then you DONT HAVE ROOT and therefore cannot install ROMs or much else. there are currently NO ROOTING METHODS for leakers. youre SOL for now.

Aosp gb update now

@Jqueru just tweeted update to AOSP is underway. Confirmed on android-build.
Just did a checkin, and checked, nothing and im in GB.
Too many people get the kicks outta saying random things like this on twitter.

I think you've completely misunderstood what AOSP and OTA are. AOSP is basically the source code which ROM cookers (Paul O' Brien, Cyanogen etc) use to build their own ROMs. OTA is an update from, in our case Google, which updates a stock ROM to Gingerbread. Also the person who said this is in charge of the Android AOSP project so he's hardly some random person

No, too many people don't understand what they're reading. Building GB in AOSP is the first step. That has to happen before any kind of OTA is even built, much less tested and pushed out to devices. So doing your checkin is rather pointless, because they're at step 2 or 3, and you're at about 8 or 9. And the Tweet is from an official, confirmed Google staffer.
So again, too many don't understand what they read and want to sound like they're somebody.
My bad, i do know what im doing, i just didnt read the original post properly.
thought it was another person claiming to have recieved the OTA.

what? google can send out an Over-The-Air update for gingerbread whenever they please. they already have the source code so why would they have to release the source to the public before the compiled rom?

Becase that's the route they've chosen to go this time. Do they have to? No. They didn't with Froyo. But with GB they're doing AOSP first.
My guess is they've got a GB device already, and don't need early OTA releases to build hype.

Yes and no, lol. Google will push an OTA out to N1 devices at some point. We all know that. It could start today, it could start next week. No one really knows.
Now that the source is in AOSP, ROM developers here (and elsewhere, I suppose) will begin using the source to compile custom ROMs. You may start to see those before an OTA, you may see an OTA first.
As for what works? LOL, hopefully they all do, and hopefully they'll be bug-minimalized. (Is there such a thing as bug-free??)

Question about this:
Do you not need at least a leaked ROM to extract the necessary "proprietary files" before building? Sorry if this is a noob question. Just curious.
It means they not going to waste their time with the nexus one and let us build our own rom. That mean OTA for nexus user, no time soon. We'll see a custom rom first before we see a OTA. Nexus S is their baby now not Nexus one.
Imho even a vanilla AOSP rom would be great waiting for official OTA...

Hell Yeah!

How many of you will rollback to Froyo and why?

This is a serious question for me. Now that I've gotten a good look at EI22 I'm not so sure I welcome the change.
The issue I find to be the biggest problem is the blue overscroll. I'm really not a fan of it at all...in fact the color blue they used doesn't match the other blues currently in use on our phones. I dunno...maybe I have color blindness.
Besides...what's the point?...they took away our multi_shaded blue battery indidcator. Really is kind of a downer, as I was hopeing to remain stock once Ginger was in my life.
Anyways.../me puts on a fire retardant suit.

Not sure what the big deal is with GB? Maybe I'm just dumb? Honestly though, what's the difference, functionality wise, between Froyo and GB? I know there is a big difference between GB and ICS but is it really worth the trouble to upgrade from Froyo to GB? I'm just not seeing it.

Personally, my phone seems to do better on battery life on gb, but who knows. And that video is....pretty awesome imo.
GB is prettier overall and you can use skype!
It's like when graphics card software support came out. Man, those were the days.
I would loooove gingerbread, but my pheonix 2.2 is running soooo smooth, 2 days battery life with talk and text, a full day with a couple of movies and browsing......overclocked, undervolted. Though once ginger starts taking her meds
and is stable, ill take her back.
the other day I made the jump from SFR1.2 to the ICS gingerbread EH17 ROM. The battery life scared me in a bad way. Made the jump back to Froyo and got all set up and now I see a new GB leak. I wana know how it is before I go back.
I would consider rolling back when I hear that they finally release gingerbread OTA. But solely for the purpose of getting the OTA upgrade. I doubt i will though, I think it's going to be just a matter of time before another update to CM7, and I heard Rodderick had some kernel in testing that will sweeten it up a bit more too.

Been running 10/22 since 10/23 as my daily. It just started getting the whistling so not to happy with that but I know it is a bug and they will fix it.
I have been running cm7 with ugothakd's kernel and been getting ~30 hours per charge, with usually 2 hours of display time. With Gingerbread, however, and I've never seen anyone else confirm this, there is a portion of my screen (left-center) that becomes non-responsive every so often, which I find quite annoying. It goes away by turning the screen off and then back on, but it occurs randomly, and I'm not sure how to fix it (besides going back to froyo).
i'm *NOT* rolling back, it's a waste of time. give the devs a week or so and you'll have a completely flashable ei22. hell, in a week, we may even have an official ota WITH modem AND flashable. if you're dying for stock, best way to do it is to wait for the devs to do it better. if you just want the novelty of receiving the ota (slow ass download and unusable phone in the process) then u can roll back to stock.
on a side note, i knew several ppl who rolled their evo's back to froyo (and turned the security s-on) to receive the ota update to gb, then had to wait for MONTHS to get another s-off method so they could root their phones again. true, since we have "odin" we don't have to worry much about this, but to make this long story short: sometimes it's better to just keep what u got and be patient for our most excellently skilled devs to do their magic...

Oh don't get me wrong...I could care less at how fast things happen. The implementation means more to me than anything. I was just saying that from the looks of things, It seems a bit sloppy.
As far as rolling back goes...that was done 20 minutes after trying ei22. I really don't like the overscroll. The color implementation just seems cheap.
Also...I'm not ruleing out a great running version of cm7 as my daily. Heck...there are lots of possible choices out there...and that in and of itself is awesome.

Of course, I already know that, I was just pointing out the following because if its an OTA, its obviously going to come with the modem and when an odin is made of the OTA, it's going to be flashable by odin, so no need to say "and flashable" because that's just a given.
It seemed like the other poster was implying a cwm flashable, which is what I was talking about. That's what I meant by not flashable..

Custom ICS race

Seems that all development (in public) is cancelled for this weekend LOL
Anyone want to comment when we expect to see customised ROMs start to show up?
I'm guessing most of the cheff's are already racing to be the first with a stable and usable ROM. No first prize for a release for bugs LOL
I'm finding ICS has nice features. But I really miss JKays customisations and Kalagas' theme.

The chinese is the better option. But
What can be acieved.
Deodex yes. But will themers waste time on a release which can be superceeded quickly.
Kernels. No sources out yet so no benefit there as franco has pointed out.
Slim rom. This can be done by users already.
So whats there to gain at the moment. Not to mention as chas found out the hard way it can be a ***** to restore a nandroid.
It took me ages to get my system back in cwm. After the first version i cooked got me stuck at the boot screen. But i faced the same restore issue after using the repack
I can understand everyone wants new and wants it now. But it does not offer much more than gb at the mo. Except grief.

Thats your answer right there.
I already have a CWM flashable .zip of the Chinese\chainfires repack leak. It has all the samsung and touchwiz crap taken out of it, the treb launcher and google apps slipped in. I have also replaced the language files with english as default.
Anyone with half a brain can do the above just use the XDA search button. There are no real custom roms for the note (apart from CM9) the rest you see are all themed\tweaked originals.
As it stands the sources are not that great and very dirty.
There is only one dev you should be waiting on and thats Sebastian Mauer mad respect to him.
What I'd like to see the most is for someone to make a 240DPI ICS Rom.
With 240 DPI as default look.
That would be amazing.
By this, I mean that everything should be fully compatible in 240 dpi, no graphical glitches and all that ****.
I can't seem to achieve this on my own sadly. There will always be one graphical glitch that I would be annoyed to look at.
Agreed 100 percent.
And i only have quater of a brain lol

I think a debloated release of the chinese rom with gapps and some goodies could be of some interest though (might make me try it if it saves a lot of hassle). But atm its all very temporary.
Someone (netchip I think) is in the middle of doing up a ASOP + Chinese release.
I think that would have quite a bit of potential...
