S2 screen better than S3 - Galaxy S III General

I have to say that side by side the S2 screen looks more vivid, brighter, and text is clearer.
My son came over with his new unlocked S3 and I have been playing with it to see if I want the upgrade. The screen looks pinkish on a white backround compared to the S2. Also the brightness seems not as strong as the S2.
Am I missing something, dissappointing to say the least.

Well other than the pink tint, poor view angles, pentile matrix and gross over sharpening artifacts, the galaxy s3 display is much superior. It has much better resolution. But I agree with you text looks poor in default mode.

Your son must have got a defective unit.Refer below for the pink tint issue:-

And as far the screen comparision goes, heres the another link bellow:-
http://mobile-review.com/review/samsung-galaxy-s3-fl-en.shtml
On the above review one can clearly see that the s3 is superior to s2 in terms of sharpness and as far as the vividness goes they are nearly the same but the brightness on s3 is lower than s2.

Not really. I did a comparison with my friend S2 a few days ago. S3 screen beats S2 hands down. S3 is brighter, colours are more vivid, sharper and viewing angle is better too.

My S2 screen was very good but nothing like the S3. Big big difference. S3 blows it away.

Checked my S3 against the S2 of a colleague... S2 cannot even be compared, it's just soooo blown out of the water. OK, S3 is pentile, but really it's got a wonderful screen.

I compared my new sgs-III (i9300) with the sgs-II of my girlfriend and in my eyes the screen of the SGS-III is much better in every single aspect.

I loved my GS2 a lot because in many ways it was just so ahead of its time but the HD screens look better, especially on full brightness in the store displays. I looked at the Note, GS2 HD, Gnex, GS3 and they were all better than the GS2 screen.
But yeah, back to my point. I believe GS2 might have triggered the nostalgia factor in many because it was just so damn good. Similar to how Die Hard 3 sucked compared to the first two and Soul Calibur one was the best game ever while the sequels were jokes. It is all about first impressions so large that the sequels can't possibly meet.
Technically though, in my eyes, the HD screens look a lot better. Defintely not as wow as when I first saw the GS2 with a bright live wallpaper though.

As my exp, overall, S3 display better S2 display . S2 display got many problem and not uniform. S3 display are uniform and HD display look like much better than WVGA, down the disadvantage of Pentile panel.

Were you missing your glasses? Serious question, maybe you didn't have them on.

What a strange thread. I used to think my SGS2 had an amazing screen, and I guess it did. But after using my SGS3 for a few weeks the SGS2 now looks incredibly grainy in comparison. Sure there's some tint to the SGS3 but overall it's a huge upgrade.

Then it must be the screen protector he has on it? Is one of those invisible shield ones that does not have a smooth apperance but sort of a very light orange peel.....
Can that be it?

Saying the S2 display is better than the S3 is like saying "My 15 year old tube TV looks better than my 720P LED TV"
wel all know the S3 does take colors and put them way over the head but it does look more sharper and richer than any other device before it

how is the screen under direct sunlight?
thanks

I would say that this is the issue.
I had one on and my screen looked garbage. I had to take it off.

It's probably not the screen protector. As mentioned before, many S3s have defective screens with tint issues. The extent of the discoloration varies from unit to unit, so your son might have been unlucky and gotten a very bad one.
Samsung knows of this issue so you can get an exchange.

Actually almost all S3 I tested in stores has a pink tint to the whites. A few of them are more yellowish than others but I can safely say none of them has perfect white.

One of the worst screens I have seen on a high end device...

Finally got to play with an Atrix yesterday. Simply put, I was shocked at how terrible the qHD screen looked.
Banding was visible from arm length, edges are extremely jagged, colors (particularly green on black) look absolutely abysmal.
Personally, I would much rather have a traditional 800x480 panel than a 960x540 pentile panel. In a side by side comparison the screen on my SLCD Incredible is miles ahead. I guess Motorola was more interested in having numbers that looked good on paper than real world performance.

This WRGB subpixel arrangement goes a long way in explaining the issues I saw... Actually, If I'm looking at this correctly each pixel does NOT have 5 subpixels, but 4. Quadrile anyone?
Ditto! I thought I was going crazy, hearing everyone talk about how good they thought the screen looked....it looks horrible imo....
Via the XDA app for the HTC Inspire
Same here
I was horrified how bad the colors were. Just install angry birds and check the colors. It looks all washed out and dull. The same is the case with NFS shift installed.
The text in the browser does look sharp though, i have to admit. But overall pretty disappointing.
Samsung S2 , please give us some hope here in the US, and soon!
Really? The worst screen that I saw was the Nexus S SAMOLED with its unnatural exaggerated colors and the lack of sharpness..
Having owned (for a short bit) an iPhone 4, a Nexus One (for 11 months) and having played around with a Nexus S for a week, I gotta tell you I really like the Atrix screen. I will admit that viewing it from the side blows...but how often do you do that?

As far as I know I don't see people using cellphones sideways.
While I'll definitely agree that it's far from the best screen ever, I don't think it's nearly bad enough to justify the number of complaints people have about it. Is it because it's the easiest flaw to point out?
Is the side view bad? I can actually see things fairly clear almost to the point of having the screen at an angle that I can't actually see the screen itself. Reading text gets impossible a fair bit before that I guess. If the viewing angle is limited on this phone, then I guess I don't often test the limits of viewing angles on other screens lol.
I don't know about you guys but I like the screen...lol, you guys must have better eyes our higher standards

once again,
the biggest misconception of the atrix's screen is that its washed out. This is NOT TRUE. the screen is extremely neutral in colors. SLCD and SAMOLED all have extremely exaggerated colors and contrasts. Some people like it, some dont...its like arguing which is better..plasma or lcd.....
I'm pretty sure if you do some research almost all video enthusiasts would recommend plasma over LCD. But that's not only because of the colors but also the response rate differences.
SAMOLED has perfect blacks so of course the contrast will be higher (infinite) but the colors can also be tweaked to not be so saturated. So at least you have the option to change it, rather than having an unsaturated display that you can't increase.

I doubt they'd release a phone with this much of a problem, probably just a defective unit as I've seen pictures of the GS3 with a white background and looked fine.

Have you checked with different screen modes? There are 4 modes in GS3.
Maybe faulty like others mentioned or just a test unit made without any QC. Try comparing against another retail unit if you can find.

Its a defective unit for sure,
But i will tell you one thing...
Samsung QC is amongst the worst for their AMOLED screen process. The tolerances they have for screens are borderline "anything goes". The Note had screen issues with "pink" and so did the galaxy nexus. The SGS2 had green/yellow issues... Its a lottery;/
You may get a great one, or it may be rubbish,
It took me 6 SGS2's to get a nice even AMOLED screen, its the big downside to AMOLED;(
JD
I've used galaxy nexus for 2 months, before I gave it to my niece.
One thing I noticed with the galaxy nexus display is the color banding on grey background at low brightnesses. I have checked several galaxy nexus's at local samsung store and all of them had this issue. Surprisingly there is no similar issue on galaxy note.
I wonder if this problem exists on galaxy s3?
as op have mentioned it as a final unit lets hope we wont see many such defective screens. Spending some nice money and seeing a screen with some problem will be totally annoying and frustrating.
edit: in all the videos i have seen so far i can clearly spot a blue tint in the screen. hope supercurio starts to work on his voodoo color for sgs3 soon
@ intratech
did you note any blue tint with your s3?
This S3 is not faulty. My camera has a little problem on white balance. I will update more pics from new white balance setting.

How's the screen clarity (sharpness) and colors compares to Galaxy Note? 'Cause I wasn't impressed with Note's display much. Despite the higher pixel density, S2 seems to have more details in pictures when I compares Note and S2 side by side. I wonder if the same thing happens to S3.
btw: You must be the guy on tinhte, haven't seen this topic up there . Is your S3 a test unit ?
I believe the difference between the note and s2 will be to with the physical screen size. Smaller screen will be better with less pixel density.

I think its slightly taller if not mistaken.
They made the screen slightly narrow than the 1st note because:
1. they wanted the 16:9 ratio (best viewing for movies)
2. to make it more comfortable to hold in your hand.
@Sforever31 Note 2 has more features and more power!
The perceived pixel density will be higher though, so images will LOOK a lot better. And like someone mentioned, no more jagged pentile lines like I see on my GS3.

It's RGB.
It is RGB (every pixel owns his 3 subpixel) but the arrangement of the subpixels is different from the ordinary RGB screens, thus the missing 'Plus' in the name.

In the left you have a normal RGB pixel (ONE X, S 2, Lumia 920 ...) and on the right you have a Note II pixel. The blue one was made bigger because amoled blue subpixels die faster than green and red. How the screen will perform in real life remains to be seen but I bet it will be much better than pentile.
I was a bit disappointed about the screen being longer and not the same width, but reading a bit about it so far I think it will be beneficial to me to upgrade because I mainly use it for movies.

I was initially skeptical about Samsung's choice in going for not only a low resolution screen but also a bigger display area. However, after I learned that they've also decided to ditch PenTile in favour of this new RGB matrix, I breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

I remember on my S3 there was a setting in the display menu....I can't remember on top of my head but this setting would allow the S3 to optimize the screen image to save battery. If this setting is enabled on your note like my s3 was then that could be why its not being brighter.
The only thing disappointing about this are the other people showing the Note II being better than the iPhone.

How are you performing your test exactly?
You didn't buy it? How are you testing it in a room so dark then?
I've actually noticed, on my note 1, if you use the 'stock' internet browser and use a power saving mode, then it dims it using a very bluish tint, which looks quite different from just setting brightness at a lower level. So it could be test related.
I can't imagine any reason at all why the screen would be worse than the S3.
Samsung has said this is their best screen ever.

I won't believe it neither unless I see it in person.

Colors are washed on Nexus 4

Just received my Nexus 4 today and the color are definitely washed (not so popping) on the phone. I actually think they are sub-standard than other lcd screens. Anyone agree? Can a custom rom saturate the colors more? Is there a way to saturate the colors without a custom rom?

I don't agree. I think the colors look great. Color reproduction is just more accurate. AMOLED colors pop because colors are oversaturated. It's unrealistic and I prefer the colors on an IPS display. In any case, you'll probably get used to it shortly.
pictures so that we can compare with other people who have the phone

I think you have bad eyes
I've been dieing to get mine so I can compare to the Lumia 920 screen (which is absolutely gorgeous)
Yes Colors are washed out on Nexus 4 compared to Xperia S. And I'm not talking about Mobile Bravia Engine.

The colors on my device are not washed out what so ever. They seem to be pretty accurate, but not eye popping like amoled. If i try to view the phone at an angle, there is a yellow hue but that's it. Very happy with the screen

Well the Xperia S has just a LED-backlit LCD screen, not even IPS. I never liked AMOLED in any way.
Sony does have something that is superior to Korean companies.
The screen looks fine to me on my Nexus, although I find the one X's screen a tad bit better. No biggie tho

I won't call washed out but colors on my Xperia TL look better. I checked videos and lot of pictures from smugmug and flickr. While I liked colors on Xperia better I thought Nexus displayed more accurate colors.

Judging by the chrome icon. Thats how green red yellow suppose to look like. The dynamic and standard option on the galaxy s3 make the colors over saturated. So naturally. Your eyes are use to seeing stronger colors. But thats not how they are like in real life.
I do lots of editing and photography.

Ha those darn Amoled eyes, Coming from S3 i thought the same, but my eyes adjusted. and I prefer the sharpness of ips
I find the nexus 4 display to be fantastic. Not a single complain.

I've had nothing but amoled too and thought the same thing. You'll get used to it after a few days, now I like the display on my N4 better.

OP is used to amoled. This panel is absolutely gorgeous.
I have a Dell Ultrasharp for work and use the same wallpaper from Jellybean, the colors are definitely undersaturated on the phone.
Realistic colors mean wide color gamut, which means being able to do both unsaturated and saturated. The phone cannot do saturated colors well, which means it has a narrow color gamut and only looks realistic when its not showing an image with high saturation in it.
Wait for these kernel devs cook something up like on the GNEX, edit the contrast and things will be popping!
Yeah I'm used too amoled also and noticed the difference, the colors seem very similar to the Nexus 7 which makes me wonder if it's a color profile or something that can be IMPROVED (ie not 'fixed') with software updates, mods and kernels.
After a few days though, I definitely noticed the difference in terms of usability.. this phone is much nicer to use than the S3 was, and I'm not automatically rushing to the night mode settings whenever possible.
