Galaxy S3 Display Problem! Pink tint + ink marks confirmed ...

Just hand-on and test SS Galaxy S3 final version. I got some pics for you.
I realize that Super Amoled HD on Galaxy S3 not much better than G Nexus or G Note. Something less over saturated colors, lower max bightness
Something made me impressed

Note: due to some reason of my camera ( or other I can not define ), S3' display appear striped but infact only light gray pink.

Display pure black in dard inviroment: many ink marks

It looks lika a moiré-effekt this could be a reason of the subpixel setup but the pink tone isnt well, hope they will fix it...

Colors balance = problem of all Super Amoled untill now.

I doubt they'd release a phone with this much of a problem, probably just a defective unit as I've seen pictures of the GS3 with a white background and looked fine.
The Note is using Pentile as well and that looks fine.

Looks like its a problem with the white balance. I guess it can be easily fixed.

I got to play with a test unit yesterday and it didn't have this issue. Just a faulty unit.

Have you checked with different screen modes? There are 4 modes in GS3.
Maybe faulty like others mentioned or just a test unit made without any QC. Try comparing against another retail unit if you can find.

Its a defective unit for sure,
But i will tell you one thing...
Samsung QC is amongst the worst for their AMOLED screen process. The tolerances they have for screens are borderline "anything goes". The Note had screen issues with "pink" and so did the galaxy nexus. The SGS2 had green/yellow issues... Its a lottery;/
You may get a great one, or it may be rubbish,
It took me 6 SGS2's to get a nice even AMOLED screen, its the big downside to AMOLED;(

I've used galaxy nexus for 2 months, before I gave it to my niece.
One thing I noticed with the galaxy nexus display is the color banding on grey background at low brightnesses. I have checked several galaxy nexus's at local samsung store and all of them had this issue. Surprisingly there is no similar issue on galaxy note.
I wonder if this problem exists on galaxy s3?

as op have mentioned it as a final unit lets hope we wont see many such defective screens. Spending some nice money and seeing a screen with some problem will be totally annoying and frustrating.
edit: in all the videos i have seen so far i can clearly spot a blue tint in the screen. hope supercurio starts to work on his voodoo color for sgs3 soon

did you note any blue tint with your s3?

This S3 is not faulty. My camera has a little problem on white balance. I will update more pics from new white balance setting.
At min brightness, S3 display white color more and more gray compare to S2, Note!

But the Super Amoled HD still not very good eps compare to IPS LCD (2). I beleive 10 S3 has 10 difference color tint

How's the screen clarity (sharpness) and colors compares to Galaxy Note? 'Cause I wasn't impressed with Note's display much. Despite the higher pixel density, S2 seems to have more details in pictures when I compares Note and S2 side by side. I wonder if the same thing happens to S3.
btw: You must be the guy on tinhte, haven't seen this topic up there . Is your S3 a test unit ?

I believe the difference between the note and s2 will be to with the physical screen size. Smaller screen will be better with less pixel density.

What's interesting is that the One X comes with panels from two different vendors, Sharp and AUO. The AUO panel is the one that's appeared on all the reviewers test units. It's got far better contrast, more natural colors, and cooler whites. Some of the *****ing about the One X display is from people that have gotten Sharp panels which are noticably warmer. I'm sure Samsung screens all the panels on their reviewer units too so the comparisons are fair.

This image is the best we can get, look at the image below
The 1st comparison clearly shows how good is the RGB matrix, despite the red area showing too much dots in s3 the mobile that is captured in that picture has almost same details.
The 2n comparison shows how good is the real blacks in s3 and infact the text looks much crisper. The hox screen simply couldnt match the blacks of amoled.
Do note that this is not the resolution we will be using for daily usage, the resolution used is far from the regular usage
if anyone missed the below image i posted a few days back(extracted from mobile-review.com) it tells a different story

Thats why a rgb striped display can easily beat a pentile diplay interms of resolution but interms of contrast,amoleds are THE king

The warmer ones looks totally different, samsung sure will have similar problems .

I am a bit confused here...According to gsmarena test note was the brightest amoled but here phonearena states that s3 is the brightest
Or this is because of the gorila glass 2 ????

Which one looks more like the original image? That's what matters most. All the pencil pic shows is that the AMOLED displays are presenting the image differently than an LCD panel. That doesn't mean it's correct.
This video compares LCD2 to SAMOLED with mutiple subjects, at different depths, and in different lighting conditions. And each shot starts out by showing the original. It's a GN their comparing but the discussion is sharpness, not brightness, And with similar PPI the GN and SGS3's ability to display detail should be the same.

This is starting to get silly. I have seen image comparisons where i without doubt prefere the S3 over the One X. With this comparison it is the other way around.

Blotches on an all black screen? Test yours here

Can you guys with cameras that have manual control test something for me?
Following on from a post by someone else about weird blotches on an all black image displayed on the screen, I checked mine today in pitch darkness and noticed a faint 2 inch or so of blackness on one edge of the screen along with smaller blotches. It doesn't appear to be as visible as the other poster's though but I exaggerated in in the photo so it's easier to see and settings posted below for people to check as well.
This is only visible on an all black screen. This does not exist on any of the S2's I've owned. I'll check my dad's S3 tonight when I go see him in the same way but the way to photograph it to keep the results consistent are as follows:
Stick camera and phone in a cupboard and...
Phone screen brightness: 50%
Camera ISO: 200
Camera Shutter: 15 seconds
Camera Aperture: f/4.5
Remember to pre-focus and use the 10sec timer to avoid shake
Those settings will over exaggerate the effect as shown in my photo below but it makes it easier for everyone to see as you do have to focus your eyes in reality and it's not immediately obvious unless you're in pitch darkness and looking at an all black screen.
I don't know how I feel about this though but if it's visible using the above camera settings for lots of people then I'll leave it as is.
Again, it's only visible on an all black screen so make sure your image that you load is all black and not grey or something Make sure screen timeout is set to at least a minute to avoid the screen going off!

What free app? It's a black image with screen timeout extended. The rest is your camera settings to be able to fairly photograph the screen for everyone to compare, an app can't do that

I didn't see those nope! Thanks for the links. Seems strange though as the white S3 belonging to my dad has none of the blotches, neither does a pebble blue on another forum. My 2 S2 handsets had no issues either.
Oh well!

My first phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 20sec)
Second phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 30sec)
The guy at the store (**** Smith in Australia) was unable to reproduce the issue in-store, so swapped the phone out and said I'd have to go to samsung if I reported the same issue again. The 2nd phone still has the issue, but as you can see, nowhere near as bad... still... not very good is it.
My 2 year SGS1 had about 4 spots - never noticed any issue. The first SGS3 was definitely noticeable just scrolling through system menus at night.

That's rather bad^^ I've emailed mobiflefun with picture so let's see what they say.

Suggest you up your exposure (duration and/or ISO) to make it a bit more noticeable. Looks like you've got a fair amount of guff in the top-left corner.

I don't have an SGSIII yet, but I noticed pretty much this same thing on my Galaxy Note. One night I was viewing an image with an all black screen and it had these weird blotches on the screen. I had never noticed them before.

Actually mine does has it as well but I can't seem to see it under normal conditions

This is AMOLED. My PS Vita has same thing. Nothing you can do about it.

I have it too. Looks like a crack from the inside out on the bottom left corner.
I can see it in Settings/led notification screen at the bottom at night with screen brightness low.

My galaxy nexus doesn't have this so it's not all of them.

I saw around 10 to 15 blotches on my screen,not at all noticable in everyday use only when i looked very closely i saw them scattered around the middle.As its my first amoled phone,i want to know is it harmful for the screen?Shd i ask for replacement?Though i dont have any pink spots or tints watsoever.

My 4 GNexus did.

Wow this looks like a widespread issue. Samsung needs to know about this

This "issue" is known since the SGS1. Is the leakege from the AMOLED display. One thing to consider i only have a line about half a CM in the same place where you have the circle mark. Maybe a manufacture failure?

quicker way to test.
1 - dark room
2 set auto brightness off and screen to lowest brightness.
go to phone and dial *#0*#
click vibrate test which will display black screen.
and then check....
p.s been through this in other threads here but mky local telco had 26 with this issue went to another telco and got a blue one today - and no issue whatsoever...

Does the screen have a bluish tint in the whites similar to galaxy s3?

Looks better, but still there. I guess they're doing it to increase screen life or something, but absolutely hate that.
Once I installed Perseus on my Note II, I could hardly believe I'm looking at the same screen. Looks even better than iPhone 5 after calibration

I believe posters on here claimed cost reasons. too bad.. I prefer the overall design and build, screensize to handset ratio of the s4, but like the htc one screen..

That might not be apparent in normal vision though. S3 has noticeable graininess, but the pixel density on S4 should pretty much settle that IMO.
And I don't know if they took the screenshot with adobe RGB mode or saturated standard mode.
I love SAMOLED, but just wish if they could switch entirely to RGB. Wouldn't mind paying a few extra bucks either tbh if they implemented that on Note 3.

I don't think they can manufacture FHD 1080p yet. At least not in the amounts that the GS4 would demand at a reasonable price.

Yup, two issues: sharpness and color. It looks like the higher resolution overcame the less sharp drawback of pentile, but color tint looks is still there. need to verify what color mode the phone was in though.

welll, just got back from store. htc one's have multiple dipslay with different WB. but the s4 definitely had better WB in my eyes.

if you read my response, you'll see that the One has a more bluish tint than the S4.

I messed around with an S5 demo unit in my local O2 shop last weekend and performed a direct comparison between my S4 and the S5 looking for this very thing. There was no smearing at all on the S5, where as it's blatantly obvious on the S4 in comparison.
So no is the answer, which is great news.

No, I didn't. But, speaking as someone who has owned an S4 for 12 months, it doesn't just show itself in this environment. As I said, I ran a direct comparison between my S4 and the S5 whilst in the shop with both set to low brightness, and in that particular environment the S4 smearing was obvious and the S5 didn't manifest any at all. So at the very least it is considerably better than the S4 and I'd go so far as to say the issue has been rectified.

They S5 review by GSM arena, they did mention the smearing issue when brightness is set to low. Atleast it is noticeable in lower brightness.

Hello, today i bought new s5 and tested in a dark room with video that shows "quick moving black objects" and the result is :
the s4 pink smearing is still affected on s5
the entire screen background is turned from s4 BLACK to s5 BLUE and that can help hide the smearing because no black color is showing(pixel off)
this may result more consumption of battery (i think) .
you can still notice the pink smearing when in dark room set screen bright to lowest, go to Phone Dial and fast pressing on the 3 dot icon (more) on top right under the Contacts icon > PINK PINK!! (because this background is black)
because this is the SUPER AMOPINKLED bring to you by SAMSUNG :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

I believe gsmarena and anandtech both mentioned smearing. Not a big big deal but I wish Samsung would do better.

I'd take the S5's SAMOLED with smearing under extreme low light over any competing IPS with backlight bleed at all levels of backlight.

To each its own, that's like runflat vs regular tires to each pros and cons

A little something I found that helps greatly reduce the "purple" smearing:
1. Set your screen profile to Pro Photo or Movie(preferred).
& more importantly.
2. Download Lux from the Play store. Enable night mode and set the White Balance to Fluorescent.

Yep... My S5 and Note 3 have near-identical levels of smearing at the lowest brightness in the middle of the night in a dark room.
But if that's the price I pay for having a screen where black really is black (as opposed to dark grey) and doesn't use battery for black, I'll take AMOLED any day.

Yes, it suffers in the same way.
It's a problem related to AMOLED technology. If you use a totally black screen, all points are off. When you move a line in this screen, the points must be switched on and the response time cause the problem.
The only solution is not using a totally black background. Use a DARK one, but not full black. This, for exapmple, is what Samsung have done in the setting screen. Try it.
