ANDROID OS V. 4.1 Jelly Bean - Galaxy S II General

res everyone
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...n-will-be-coming-to-the-galaxy-nexus-first/ad thi
i wen crazy, it looks as every time we go one step foward the leap a block,
lets get to looking for leaks, and start porting this baby, now and days there
are a bunch of different looking android platforms, i see nothing wrong with our
sgs2's, its a great device, lets make its firmware great too

Yea, just read it. Can't believe this stupid decision by Google. Keeping the version number same and changing the platform name is very weird and childish. And it will be a disaster if it's really a mere upgrade over ICS, and i think that's true. Have they finally accepted that ICS wasn't finished and indirectly they will try to finish it with a flashy name?? I guess.

Android 4.1

Wow,
Just a decimal number difference, and Google names Android 4.1's platform name to Jelly Bean o_o
& Rumours has it that Android 5.0 will be called Key Lime Pie instead
Will be interested to be on a look out what exactly are the changes via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history.

Also, how is this a theme or an app.

This is news related to the Galaxy Nexus, not the Galaxy S II.

Guess i should read things before posting 'em... Well i'll be ready for the flaming.
Samsung confirms Galaxy S II will receive Android 4.0 ICS
Samsung UK announced via its Twitter feed that the Galaxy S II will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s hardly a surprise since the Galaxy S II lineup is based on top-notch hardware and the latest Android Gingerbread.
Unfortunately, there is no information on release dates or any details on the other Galaxy S II members (besides I9100). Still, we guess all the Galaxy S II phones should be eventually upgraded to ICS.
Also, the information comes from Samsung UK, but we guess it should apply for all the countries the Galaxy S II is available in.
I'm not looking forward to seeing what Samsung's touchwiz does to the look and feel of ICS. I really didn't like what they did with the Galaxy Tab, even though it may have a few nice functions. The overly light and colourful look of TouchWiz is unappealing to me.
What I'm most interested about though is what they are going to do with the buttons. I would like to see the menu button be used for multitasking, but then I don't know how they could deal with legacy apps that still require a menu button...
I don't want to have to hold down the home button for an unspecified amount of time to get to the multitasking screen any more.
Arm your flame-shield.

We’re releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.
The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.
The name of the development branch is jb-dev.
We recommend that you create new clients, even if you’re working in the master branch. It’ll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.
Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus S and Xoom will follow.

Honestly, I don't like JellyBean so far. Voice Search doesn't work, and it is totally not as smooth as butter (if you know what I mean).
I'll wait till the Over The Air update, until then, I use the default ROM.

You can't be serious champ? It's a SDK. I never knew of any SDK running smoothly on any device. It the opposite of everything you said on the Galaxy Nexus.

One of the most ridiculous comments I've ever read....and I've read quite a few on XDA....
It's not that you don't like Jellybean....it's that you don't like the specific ROM(s) you've tried...the devs are doing some impressive stuff, show some respect....

you know steven676's rom is almost complete, right? I ported many patches from his rom (with indirect's rom as a base) and I've read almost his entire thread. I don't have a NS3G to test it, but I'm sure since we have the same hardware, mostly, his can't be any less smooth than mine is....and mine is BUTTERY smooth...and lightning fast!!

Sdk ports are always marginal at best. We can't really make a decision until official is out. Plus our phones are seriously lacking in the specs department at this point so I'm sure it runs better on something more modern.

fully agree with u, and yet i still like JB very much.
i can already say that for me personally JB is 10 times better than ICS, and i tried most of the ICS roms.
Love butter smooth animations, speed, new camera,
new notifications [although would be much better if u could take a peak with one finger not 2, cuz then u cant do it with one hand],
and at last i can use multitasking...
not the biggest fan of Google Now, at least at this point. ive found it not much usefull 4 me, i would prefer it much more integrated with other apps.

well you have an android device.. it's open source... meaning communities like xda has great developers... you only need to read a bit (5–10 mins) to be able to root and flash cwm recovery into your device Wich btw its hell easy in most samsung devices... then you are ready to flash any custom roms out there... And you can ask anyone devs here in xda are wayyy more talented than manufacturer's... meaning custom roms performs wayyy better than stock roms... and you will be updated as soon as any change in aosp code happens go ahead and void your warranty xD.. there's always methods to go back to stock

Trust me when I tell you, I know. I am running ICS on my Samsung Epic device, which only supports GB. LOL.
No matter how good our developers are, they still need Samsung to do their part. FOR EXAMPLE... Take a picture with your 10.1 using ANY ICS ROM that our developers have put together. Plus, to be completely honest, we shouldn't have to count on our NON-PAID, VOLUNTEER devs to make the software everything that it SHOULD HAVE BEEN when released from Samsuck.

I am in the same boat as you. I should of learned with the Captivate how they do things in regards to updates but I didnt. The only way I will still buy a Samsung product is if they are making the next nexus phone or tablet. That way factory images will be provided and then I can just flash the updates myself and not have to wait for them to update it for me.

This port is pretty buggy, but overall its SO smooth. I haven't had a single lag/shutter. Only draw-backs are no wifi and audio (I don't even need to mention the camera...)
The port is pretty awesome, and I'm expecting something great to come of this, making our tabs better, faster, and way more productive.

Bye bye iOS - Welcome Android

Dear all,
First of all, sorry if I do some gramatical errors when I write in english ... English isn't my default language
After have used 3 iPhones (3GS, 4 & 4S), I've decided to left the Apple's smartphone. Reason? Reason is very simple, after doing the update to iOS 6.1.2, my wifi button is became greyed and still greyed I try to discuss with Apple to swap my iPhone but no change ... In Belgium, the warranty for Apple is ONE year and following european regulations, the warranty should be at least 2 years!!!
So I decide to change the rule and break the wall ... After a benchmark of the market (S3, S3 4G, (future) S4, HTC One, Z, etc.) I choose the S3 4G.
Ok, no problem to change the world when using natively Google ... Stop the iPhone, put the SIM into the S3 4G GT-I9305 and let's go.
After the first period of excitement a bug appears ... some time the S3 don't ring when incoming call came ...
First part of the solution, change the SIM to a newest. Conclusion: better signal from the Proximus network (4G).
After 2-3 weeks using the native Samsung Android version (4.1.2), I investigate to flash my S3.
So, because I'm using a Mac, Odin is not a good idea.
Based on this forum, I decide to follow the steps below:
1) Backup IMEI through a Windows PC
2) Download directly from Cyanogemod site: Clockwork Mod Recovery, Heimdall, CM 10.1 and Google Apps
3) Upload to the SDCard of my S3 the CM 10.1 and Google Apps zip files
4) Using Heimdall, I flashed veeeeery quickly CWM without problem
5) Reboot and go to CWM menu to wipe and install CM and Google
So, as from past saturday my S3 is working on CM 10.1 Android 4.2.2.
First result: The fluidity and the daily confort is better with CM than native Samsung firmware.
Just a "bug" ... incoming calls make no sound by vibrations yes ... following this forum, I've maybe a problem with my MP3 ringtone. So, I'm using a native ringtone and waiting for a non ringing incoming call
A great thanks to Cyanogenmod and XDA to provide a very profesional experience based on native Android.
Kind regards,
Andr3.be

Well, this is my first Android mobile too. And I came from a couple iPhone experiences and Symbian N8.
I totally discovered a new world here on Xda. With iPhone I became a lazy user taking and standard apps and there isn't much to customize...
Symbian scene is half dead (still a pity btw) so Android was the better option for those who want some challenge and improvement of the device.
Pity I'm just a beginner but since I started reading this forum I learnt so many things :fingers-crossed:
I remember being impressed with IOS initially, now it drives me mad, not even being able to change your keyboard or properly interact with the filesystem, it's nice to be free! I'm loving CrDroid at the moment, so much to play with.

Also with http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/09/balky-carriers-and-slow-oems-step-aside-google-is-defragging-android/ in place, it should be interesting to see just what features are KK only.

4.3 to 5.0 is too big of a jump anyway at this stage of android. That would of required so many changes and improvements.

i have no clue what 5.0 will bring. these software engineers and programmers are geniuses to even bring us this far. i cant even think of or imagine what else android could do to change the game. it sucks that steve jobs isnt around to give the tech world a little push through competition
You guys can't think of any more improvements to be made to Android? Really? I mean really?
Just off the top of my head how about so much more in the way of customization so you would never ever have to think about using a third party launcher again? How about finally implementing a backup and restore system (an easy and practical one) so you can take all your apps and data from one phone to another? How about coming up with a system in which you can get Android OS updates through the play store and have them work with Sense and others instead of waiting months for updates? Ok that one is pushing it but still possible.

I was reading an article the other day about how it seems google is slowly doing that. They are bringing more and more parts of android to the store, google play services and what not. It was discussing the plausibility that having the launcher, mfg settings, and hardware features be separate from the OS, so that way google can upgrade the core of android without needing an overhaul from the OEM's at every step. Was kinda cool, and seemed very much like the direction they could be going.

Not sure if this is the article you were talking about..but It hits all the same points. Good Read. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...oems-step-aside-google-is-defragging-android/
Android if becoming it's own beast now, & it's eating up cool features & integrating everything that is worth it, I'm likening it to the MCP. imagine Larry Page talking to his desk, for example just raced Google play sound search versus Shazam
Sound Search won hands down with 4/4 correct scans over Shazams 3 and a random track thrown up when it couldn't find the 4th
I can only imagine this corporate Chocy deal with Nestlé will result in the next build being a nestle product starting with L can't think of one betting markets anybody?), followed by version 5.0 Milo
