Mod edit: this is now the official JellyBean discussion thread.

i dont think that 2011 xperia phones will get jelly bean update 4.1.
google shoud make jelly bean as v 5.0 not v4.1. looks odd.

We could all wait for the Google I/O conference on June 27th for confirmation.
few days ago actually there was a meeting on whether only Arc s of 2011 family should get android 4.1 update or not..lol..its like before a child is born parents are deciding whether he/she will be a doctor or an Engineer
and jelly beans is a minor update..hopefully it will be light or else google have to make 3 or 4 different version for single core, dual core and quad core or maybe hexa core in future

If you remember the phone came out before froyo was announced. You can't accuse them of not designing the phone for something that didn't exist at the time.
Having said that, it isn't an excuse for not supporting froyo. Everyone knows it can handle it. Heck, there are custom Roms lol

Hi all First – As a clarification regarding the current Xperia products –
We are planning another upgrade to bring new features (such as for example multi-touch for Xperia X10) to the current family of Xperia™ smartphones in Q1 2011.
However, at this stage those plans do not include updating the underlying Android version
This decision is based on that we believe that with the current hardware platform an overhaul of the underlying core OS wouldn’t drastically improve the user experience
We believe that the current Xperia range on Android 2.1 coupled with our proprietary upgrades and unique hardware delivers a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2
Our priority right now is to keep enhancing the user experience of the existing products through coming updates and to deliver a fantastic range of smartphones in 2011 that are all on the latest possible version of Android – that is a target we are determined to hit! version of Android – that is a target we are determined to hit

Samsung is one of the subscribers of the deal...
that for sure only will start for new device which will come with Google Ice Cream Sandwich.
With more than 10 Million devices sold, I imagine that the Galaxy S will be part of the program.
Even though Samsung is in on the deal (which is not surprising), it's still ultimately up to the carriers for when and how Android versions are released on what devices.
Samsung is pretty much leading the charge when it comes to releasing updated versions of Android for their Galaxy S phones, as well as releasing the kernel source.
The problem is most carriers don't update the phones with Samsung's releases quick enough for some people, if ever. Here in Canada, we're still (officially) on 2.2 Froyo for the i9000m.
Here's another interesting article to support that claim.
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...updates-for-galaxy-range-954260#ixzz1M0MvnVvT
I don't really care what the carriers do. Who sticks with crappy carrier roms anyway?

I've seen the keynote live yesterday, he said all NEW devices would get it.
Well the galaxy s isn't "new" anymore.
Plus Ice Cream is supposed to come out in Q4.
Well that's more then 18 months from may (right?) last year.
So it's just hoping Samsung will be nice to us.

i like the cool name android produces...... but what the hell is an ice cream sandwich ??
i like ice cream, and i like sandwiches, but i would never mix the 2 together.
wouldnt this just be 2 slices of bread, with ice cream in the middle ??
surely this will make it all cold and soggy...
Americans will eat anything lol,
sorry for the off topic question
Ah well, released Feb 2011, Galaxy SL i9003 users have lot to enjoy in the 18 months timeframe... We'd have ICS but waiting 2 more months for GB is a torture!
Still, good of Samsung to join the program...

Some people just like to distort the truth for effect.
I've had my SGS for a year and in that time I've gone from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.2.1 and now to 2.3.
That is three updates in 12 months which is equivalent to one update every 4 months.
ooooh i know what they are lol
we dont call them 'ice cream sandwiches' over here lol,

I guess the 18 month timeframe covers android releases in that frame, not how long it takes the update to come through. So, guys stop ****ting about how long they take to release the updates.

This of course is very true. I'm always slightly surprised why people tolerate this situation. We choose a device running open source software because of the freedom it provides, then tolerate provider limitations and lock-downs. Mine was unbranded and unlocked when I got it and I wouldn't have it any other way

If they will release 2.3.5 in November... when will they release ICS ?
now I can see a pattern of a new version update in nearly 3 months... it was 2.3.2 when launched and later in early Q3 updated to 2.3.3, in late Q3 they started the 2.3.4 update... and now in Q4 they're preparing the 2.3.5 update...
I just hope they can bring ICS very soon.. I mean like early Q1, January or February maximum...

Hello All,
Google has announced Jelly Beans. Google Nexus S will be getting Jelly Beans somewhere next month. This means all 2011 Xperias can run Jelly beans since we all have equal or better hardware than Nexus S.
So what you all think will Sony give us a JB update?
There's already a topic on the JellyBean roll-out. Post your thoughts there.
And no, it's not really likely that we'll be getting official support from Sony on this.
It makes no sense for Sony to do so as it would compete directly with their 2012 line. It's a marketing strategy and it makes sound business sense.
But I don't think there's cause for worry as I'm sure that our resident geniuses here at XDA will port it for our phones.
Swyped from my SE Xperia arc (LT15i) using Tapatalk 2
Even all 2011 XPERIA´s have the same Hardware, i dont think, Sony will update all Mobiles to Jelly Bean. I think, first Sony will say, that thy won´t update the Mobiles, also XPERIA arc S. Then I think, the people will be very unhappy. Then, 5 Month after Release, Sony will say, "Okay, because all people are unhappy with our update plans, we will release JB for arc S, Neo V and Ray, (and perhaps arc, but i dont think so) I think, they will say this in End of July, and we will get JB at the End of October. But I think, It will never run as smooth as GB, not even as ICS. i think it will run like a X10 with 2.3.3 with 100 Apps

If they do update it needs to work better than ics , because the only way ics works is if you mod and Rom it to death and even then there isn't a 100% guarantee it will work as smooth as it should on every device.

On a windows view... Did you guys ever thought that the update status of android is the same as windows?
I mean look
Windows 98 = Eclair - this were the times where they got the boom popularity
Windows 2000 = Froyo = an OS version which just past like nothing.
Windows XP = Gingerbread = a very stable build. Has lot's of compatibility and has a reputation to last longer than the others. Users tend to prefer using this one than the latest version.
Windows Vista = ICS = The rushed update. Updates were focused more on the UI but the OS is quite laggy and has lots of crashes?
Windows 7 = JellyBean = Enhanced version of it's predecessor?

JellyBean should be compared to windows 7 JellyBean is just 1 subversion higher than ICS.
UI's should be almost similar to ICS
The same as Windows 7 being similar with Windows vista.
Android 5.0 should be the windows 8 comparison as Windows 8 is totally different on Windows 7.
Only thing I see similarities of Windows 7 and ICS is that
ICS = Tablet & Phone in one
Windows 7 = Phone and Desktop PC in one
If this comparison is accurate then probably we would be expecting a higher specs requirement for jellybean but could outperform ICS on low end devices.

As soon as jelly beans source code is released devs will start working on cm10:-D

As others have already said (though why that's all they did instead of reporting the thread is beyond me), there is already a thread about Jelly Bean - continue all further discussion there.

NB - likening ICS to Vista is ridiculous, it's a massive improvement over Gingerbread and a few individuals having problems or being unhappy with it is in no way indicative of it's overall quality as an OS.
"Jelly Bean will come to the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S smartphones and the Xoom tablet in mid-July, but developers can download the app-development tools starting today from Google's Android developers site."
It's ridiculous that the Xoom will have Jellybean before we get ICS officially..
Android 4.1 Jellybean is coming to XOOM
I'm in luck! I have a Galaxy Nexus.
Man you got me all excited... You should edit your post. No where in that article dose it say that "Galaxy S" devices are getting Jelly Bean. Just Nexus branded devices.
And it kind of makes sense that the Xoom would get JB... Its been out a bit longer and didn't it already get its ICS update? Not sure on the ICS update, I don't really follow the Xoom so...
I have to say this though..... I've pretty much just stopped caring about any updates. I have a Galaxy S2 and a Galaxy10.1 both of them rooted and running Gingerbread and Honeycomb based roms. Caulks"GB"(S2) and GalaxyTask_14_Slim"HC"(GT10.1) I have got to say that both of my devices benchmark just as good(if not a little bit better) on GB roms as they do on ICS roms. And everything works as it should, no resets, lag or lockups.
Don't get me wrong, I would love official ICS on both of my devices. I just figure it's really not that important to me anymore. Plus I would rather any update that's pushed be as polished as it can be. After the mess HC was before the devs fixed it... I'm just saying...

Bahahaha! The GT will not see Jelly Bean. ****, we haven't even seen ICS yet. This is ridiculous. I have my GS3 pre-order arriving tomorrow and if I don't love it, I'll be trading it in for the Galaxy Nexus. I believe Nexus devices is the way to go really.
The reason the Xoom will get an update is because it is a reference device.

Hey buddy, how you doing!?!?
As I said in my post that you quoted... Just "Nexus" brand devices (Edit: plus the Xoom) will see Jelly Bean.
In reply you linked me to the same webpage the OP linked us to? I've already seen that Engadet articale. But I figured, hey maybe I missed something when I read it the first time. So I clicked the link again, and carefully reread the article again. You know... Just to make sure...
Well... I stand behind my my original statement. I've made study materials. (see photo below)
Example 1. The title: Please take note, in the title of the article their is mention of the following devices. The "Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the " Nexus S" and the "Xoom". No mention of a Galaxy S device.
Example 2. Somebody spilled the Beans!!! Clean up in aisle 9!!!
Example 3. Please show me where in example 3 it says anything about a Galaxy S device getting the Jelly Bean(4.1) update in mid July...

And like one of the other posters stated... The only way Galaxy10 owners will ever see Jelly Bean will be Thanks to the awesome devs involved with this site.

I'm sure we'll get JB unofficially...
Actually, the chances of us getting jelly bean is very high, this device is 11 month old, Google promised that any android device in the market will have at least 18 month of support. That means, any updates Google does to android in that period of time should get an update.

In theory, yes, but in practice I'd like to see Samsung manage an ICS update for the tab before I start dreaming about jelly beans.
Got jb already on my gnex xD

And your testicles are really big, what a great guy you are.
If you want to talk about the Xoom, please post in the Xoom section.
If you want to talk about potential ICS and/or Jelly Bean updates for the Galaxy Tab, please post in the ICS/JB sticky.
