Galaxy S III Melts Down, Samsung Aware of the Problem - Galaxy S III General

Anyone with the same problem?
http://pocketnow.com/2012/06/21/gala...edium=facebook
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/20/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-melts/

Its not the first exploding battery / phone I've seen on the net if that is what you mean....

It wasn't battery... Screen works but no radio connection...

Yeah, didn't you see all the threads where we were berating the HOX because it didn't let you toast marshmallows?
"Your phone only gets hot, ours haz fire!!!!!!!!!!!"

Looks suspicious to me. Unless microphones spontaneously combust these days.

Well Samsung have replaced the device. They don't seem too suspicious of it.
In any case, its probably an isolated incident.

from the ifixit initial look that is where the Baseband Processor is, not mic, not battery but baseband processor. Hence no signal if that blew up, it would make sense if it was being used for navigation or traffic on the go and was polling for lots of different stations etc.
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-Teardown/9391/2
this is a "hot" area of the phone as the CPU and GPU are also located in this lower potion of the handset.

But unless I'm mistaken when the phone overheats its supposed to reboot (never understood why, rebooting is quite resource and power intensive; turning off would make more sense) not explode.

Warning about running 780mhz

Mod Edit: Moved from Android Development. (General view, though not all agree, is that this is a better forum for this)
hi im only writing this to inform people to be carefull when your flashing roms and overclocking because the devs are not joking when they say that theyre not responsible for bricked phones. i am not blaming anyone. so ive had my g1 for quite a while now and have always used cyanogens mod. when kingkick released aosp 2.1 i flashed it. and have been using it since.
my g1 had the death spl and i had just 1 partion on my sd card. my fat32.
i flashed kingkicks 1.5 2 days ago and was running it at 780mhz. i noticed the battery would deplete faster than running at 528mhz. today i was running it at 770mhz and i had the brightness up 100%, i had wireless tether running, usb tether running, gps, and i was using google maps to buzz about my location. i set my phone down for maybe 1 minute and when i looked back at my laptop it had no connection. i checked my phone and it was super hot. the led light was red. i removed the battery and now it wont boot. it just rapidly turns out the red led light and it turns back off. good thing is i have insurance but just a warning to those that are doing stuff to their phone and have no insurance.

Hey, thanks for the info!
Another reason could be all the crap you have running, wifi/usb tething by themselves not with each other heat the phone up enough, running both and other apps, thats a deadly mix right there the chips can only handle so much heat, and with all of those

There are thermal fuses in the system that will blow when parts of the phone get too hot. There's one on the mainboard that I know of, and one or an equivalent protection system in the battery.
Personally I don't see what's wrong with warning developers (as distinct from integrators) that clocking the main CPU at 2x stock rate may exceed the power and/or thermal budget of the handset and that such mods may not be particularly wise for "daily-use" ROMs, i.e., those that aren't being cooked just to whore for attention.

Dang. I'm glad I over clock at 628 mahz 528 min. After reading a lot about how 780 mhz barely makes a difference from 628 mhz I don't know why people even over clock that much. 628 mhz is plenty for me.
So you had wireless and isb tethering going =HEAT... then were playing with maps and buzz while tethering 2 different ways... And you think its because of the overclocking?????
Good luck on that
errm, red led you say
OMG mine has a RED LED
hold on... that means its charging
phew....
seriously, I very much doubt this has anything to do with King's ROM @ 770Mhz the OC is a myth.

i wouldnt say that the froyo update release today thru kies is official or anything as it was an involuntary update and most likely not final. i'm pretty sure TMO CMO decided it was a good move to provide something to help calm furious users.
but anyways to fix this, it involves a simple code value change to those who actually know how to code.
is there currently a rom that doesnt have this problem?? last roms i flashed had this problem +others and i went back to stock
well lets get someone in here who knows the code! i've had the issue since i started flashing custom roms.

The haptic feedback is weak in every 2.2 ROM I've used (and on JL1, it was totally nonfunctional).
It was present in Eclair ROMs, but still very weak compared to what it feels like in the Settings menu (and extremely weak compared to other phones). Sometimes I miss calls or texts because the weak vibration.
Typing is a little harder with such weak haptic feedback, too...

It's probably weaker to conserve battery but with it being like this for all 2.2 roms, it was probably intentional. Look in the i9000 forum for complaints and I'm sure you will find many suggesting that it is normal.

But its there, its not like they took out, you're the same ones that were crying about the battery life, they found some areas to improve on ...like the strength of the vibration amongst others.... what is the issue ....
I don't think the OP was concerned about his battery life, I think he was concerned about weak haptics.
I updated and have the same problem as him and and a a few other people. I generally keep my haptics set to a low level because I consider them overpowering, but since this new update I can barely feel them. Furthermore, once I go into 'settings > sound > vibration intensity' to make them more powerful I get a strange squeaking noise every time my phone vibrates and the vibrations get no stronger.
I highly doubt this happens because of the plastic construction, unless 2.1 changes what the phone is made out of.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its gets warm just under the camera, and the upper side of the display.. Even when Im not doing anything demanding..
I can surf and it gets warm.. But when I play games/run benchmark it gets REALLy hot imo..
Do you suffer from this as well?
Its clearly annoying how warm it is..
its the fastest phone right now, i personally expect it to be a good hand warmer during the winter... lol put it in battery saving mode and it should run cooler.

But yeah, i would expect it to get quite warm, still awaiting my delivery so can see for myself soon enough!

-you can disable power saving mode effecting the screen at all
-also try putting a thin case on it that might help if you just dont want the feeling of a hot phone

At least it does not get hotter than Xperia Z and google nexus 4. I have this s4 qualcom version as well, and it does get warm but it gets hot only if i turned on 3g + playing games. i think it is normal.
Got the same issue on my I9505... its really hot imo. This is my first Android so i dont know any to comapre it to maybe the iPhone 4s when it gets hot. But S4 is way hotter that the Iphone.

If your smartphone is not getting warm or hot, then that is not a smartphone. All devices that has a processor and a gpu intends to get hot. If your device won`t get hot then it is abnormal. Simple as that.

Placebo effect. The new firmwares have indeed some tweaks, like slower recharge in order to not render the phone unusable while plugged to the wall, but it does not solve the main problem.

Always come from a rogue app. Something is stuck in memory. Reboot, check, if still does it, uninstall last couple of apps, if still does it, factory reset.

If this isn't widespread (GSMArena's been playing hard with the N3 and plenty of people here have run some pretty intensive benchmarking programs) it's likely some combination of what you individually installed/uninstalled. The N2's on 4.1 with Exynos/Mali and the programs you're running now are on 4.3 with Snapdragon/Adreno. Not exactly the same environment to make a comparison. I'd expect the N3 to run hotter than the N2 out-of-the-box.

Any chance you can go through the checks listed to understand if it's an app that caused it?

Yes, there somewhat of a heating issue. Still not sure what triggers it and how. I don't care much about it, but I dare bet the very high clock speed of the processor has something to do with it.

Cool, one of the reviews referenced it getting hot the first time they used it, they chalked it up to all of the updating of pre-installed apps loading up the memory
This happened to me with my unlocked 9005 snapdragon n3.
Only in the first 3 hours or so.
When I looked at battery consumption it showed that a process called sonetging like "indexing service" was chewing on the battery power.
I think the search feature was indexing my content which was on ny sd card for the sfind to work fast.
Now the temperature is cool but a bit warmer than my previous N2.

Does your S6 have the always on dim LED issue?

A number of users including myself have reported that their led on the back is always on, even when the device is powered down. The light is very dim and you will likely only be able to see it in a dark room. We are trying to figure out if this is a HW related issue (meaning we need to get our phones exchanged for new units) or if this is some kind of SW related issue that can be patched. It is important to find out just how widespread this issue is. Please take your S6 to a very dark place and check if your led is emitting any light and report back!
Thanks
It happens to mine. I created a post about it and the mods moved it to q&a. Which I thought was strange. Obviously it gets less views there. The true odd thing is that other threads in the general section are clearly question threads but are not moved.
Anyways yes my flash is always on. I have tried reboots, toggling the flashlight, taking photos with the flash, turning on and off different power modes. Ect.

Yeah I think it would be beneficial to let this thread get more views as we really need to know if we are all getting defective units. I hope Samsung is at least aware of this issue.
Others reported it in my thread. Maybe we can merge these together.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3071356
Mine device has the issue. Doesn't seem to impact battery. LED's by nature require very little power to be lit. Whatever provides power to it must be faulty as a tiny bit of power is being sent to it thus it being very dimly lit. I'd wager on it being a hardware defect for sure.

Here is another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/flash-lit-t3069039
This issue should be more widely reported and should also be brought to the attention of Samsung, T-Mobile, etc.
It might be relatively harmless, but we can't know for sure long term what this does for battery life and for the life of that LED.
I really doubt it is such a big problem, and I honestly don't believe it is anything hardware related (it can't be hardware related, really....). With the next OTA Samsung should fix that.

How do we know for sure that it isn't hardware related? Why would not all phones be impacted if it were just SW?
Do you have Google Fit installed? If so go into it's settings and disable its activity tracker - that "might" fix it.

I can't guarantee you that it is not hardware related problem. Following basic logic though I can assume it is not, as I can't really see how it could be hardware problem. The flash doesn't just light up from itself you know, something triggers it to glow, even when the screen is off. I'm more than certain that there isn't a human-made light in the world that glows out of nowhere by itself- everything has a cause and effect.
And even though we are talking about the same software version (presumably) you know, that the hardware in the phone differs from unit to unit. That means that a certain part of the software may be triggering the flash to be light on, because your flash unit is not the same as on all other devices. Having said that I'm 99.9% sure it is software related and it will be fixed quite soon.

I can't guarantee you that it is not hardware related problem. Following basic logic though I can assume it is not, as I can't really see how it could be hardware problem. I feel it is software related because it's more of a light leak, than a total fault. If it is hardware I would thing it wouldn't be the same for all of us with the problem, meaning dimly lit. Some would be saying theirs is medium on full on or the flash not working some of the time. Esp. If it was not working and just staying dimly lit, would signify more to me of hardware. We don't know what the update really fixed, so can't say it even targeted this. Hopefully bringing it to T-Mobile attention will get them to take a look at it.
I plan to get one from the store and have the clerk check it, in the back if there is no update before the 20 day online return period it's up.
