Kies (Mac) Sucks - Overheating my MacBook Pro... - Galaxy S III General

So my MacBook Pro has been running hot like 86C hot for the last few days and I figured the vents must be blocked or something as I leave it on the floor while connected to my TV (yeah I know you shouldn't...) and tonight for some random reason I decided to take a look at Activity (Task) Monitor, and what do I find?
KiesWiFiAgent running at 92% CPU time...
Samsung, you make lovely hardware, but seriously, sack whatever trained monkeys you hired to develop Kies on both Windows and Mac, it's, and I never thought I would say this, worse than iTunes!
I kill the WiFi agent, and all of a sudden my MacBook Pro is running nearly 50C cooler...

Killed my S2..

I have managed to kill my S2 by playing far too much Hot Springs Story (great game!)
While playing (we're talking a good couple/few hours), I noticed that even though when the phone is connected to the supplied charger, the handset requires more current than this is able to provide, and still discharges the battery (albeit, much slower).
I got a couple of 'battery temperature too high or too low, charging has been paused' while playing, as the phone was sat on my desk, I thought nothing of it.
The next morning I saw the handset had the same battery warning on screen, and was almost completely discharged (although the handset was still on). I knew something was not right then.. The phone was very hot in the casing to the right of the battery (when looking at it from the back). I guess this is where the charging circuit is, but I really dont know.
I couldnt get the battery to charge any more than a few seconds, either when the phone was booted into Android or in its off state. I managed to reload stock KE7 (which was already installed) just to see if it made a difference, it didn't :-/
The phone then refused to co-operate with the battery at all, and simply displayed a yellow exclamation mark next to the empty battery graphic on screen.
I bought a new spare battery of ebay, hoping that the intense discharge/recharge cycle had just wrecked the original battery, but unfortunately the replacement only charged for ~5-10minutes before showing the same yellow exclamation mark :-/ I guess its the charging circuity thats failed.
The handset was from O2 on PAYG, I debranded it by putting stock KE7 on it, and a few counts on the custom kernel flash counter, I'm hoping I can warranty it without too much hassle, but I am a bit anxious that technically O2/Samsung dont have to honour the warranty.. I'll let people know how it goes..
Missing my handset!
hmm, that sucks. so it does really overheat when charging... wow, that sucks a lot! normally when the battery is full, it stops charging and the temperature returns to normal, even though it is connected to the charger.
i guess the same could potentially happen while on a trip and charging/consuming battery using satnav, or listening to music.
not good.
Nothing you did (except rooting) is extraordinary use. They promote its use for games and that's what you were doing. I'm guessing Samsung Tech will probably just replace the phone rather than try and repair it. Good luck.
i got my phone about 1 week ago and only charged it about 6 - 7 times since i got.
Well on my second charge the battery was on zero phone turned off so i connect it to the wall charger and i got the yellow exclamation mark!!!! took the battery off put it back on and it started charging.
And just than on my 7-8th charge my phone was out of battery off so i decided to charge it off my laptop and i connect it to see i get the yellow exclamation mark again while phone is off. But this time i took the battery off put it back in wouldn't work. So i kept trying it after about 5 mins of connecting disconnecting the cable i managed to get it to start charging. (this time at work so had no power point charger)
EDIT: Australian Optus branded phone with no firmware change (still stock, no root, nothing).
Sorry to hear this mate. I also noticed the battery going down faster than it was charging, while playing Retro defense. And the device was getting really hot. If this can damage the phone then I'll stop playing that much with it.
Maybe you have a faulty one?
Here is my finding regarding heat
While running some tests for the robo defense dev to provide a log file so that he can get the freezing issue addressed, i did notice that my phone was getting extremely hot.
I've played plants vs zombie, grave defense hd, etc on charger and i've never gotten close to the heat felt through the phone today once robo defense frozed and i didn't close the app for a good while to create a log dump using adb
Could it be possible that some of these rogue apps are driving the device to 100% usage causing it to heat up?
how hot is extremely hot? The hottest I caught mine at was 48°c. That was while playing a game and charging at the same time

I think that is EXACTLY what's going on... I truly believe some of these games are either not written or optimized for this phone's dual core processor. I can play most games with no problems, including some of the bigger Gameloft games. But, there are a select few games that get the device way too hot for my liking... like Sky Force Reloaded. I have never played it completely through because I can feel just how hot the phone gets even through the case.
I think these issues will be ironed out in time, but definitely app dependent right now.

Get the usb jig from ebay to reset counter for 5$ then reflash payg o2 (also in the debranding topic)) and then send it back

Definitely true for me. I can play many games for an extended period of time. Plants Vs Zombies, Death Worm, even something graphics intensive like Modern Combat 2 is no problem. But, if I play 10 minutes of Bonzai Blast it's radiating heat and the battery has lost 10%.
Sorry to read this mate.
On a side note, they say 2.3.4 will utilise Galaxy 2's hardware better, it will be more battery efficient and not overheating as much... So until then it may be a good idea not to "abuse" it too much (I know it sound crazy, but hell...)
Quick update:
I've returned the phone to the O2 store today for repair.
This was in its debranded state with the stock KE7 firmware installed, and I think 5 custom kernel install counts.
I think I could have got it back to stock by borrowing a friends charged battery, reinstalling stock rom, and then usb jigging it back to 0 custom kernel installs, but I thought I might as well 'take one for the team' and use this experience to test how flexible Samsung's repair shop is when dealing with handsets like this (HTC repaired my unlocked Nexus one without any fuss)
I've been *very* impressed with Samsung's dev friendly attitude so far, they're not only setting the standards in Android hardware used, but also with how their company recognises the wants of its consumers. I'm sure I won't be disappointed..
Should know in about 7 days!

Let us know if O2 repair or Samsung .
Its often down to the tech that picks the phone up some may just flash the stock rom and not bother others as been posted might be more picky .
As per the O2 store that refused warranty on my SGS1 .
Unlocking will not void any warranty as O2 offer the service themselves as do all networks .

Quick update, still under repair.
It came back once with a letter saying that they (o2) replaced the circuit board, but it was still broken.
It then got sent off again, and I've been told today that its come back from repair with a letter that only says 'BER', which means Beyond Economic Repair apparently.. so they're (the o2 shop) are sending it back for a repair team leader to look at now :-/
Bit fed up :-/

BER is actually good news. You'll probably get a new phone. I doubt at this point the team leader's going to say anything about your mods. He'll probably just rubber stamp it.
I always thought people shouldn't use their phones while charging at the same time
Anyway, hope they'll give you a new one. I always cringe every time I feel the back of the phone warming up...

Not possible for developers When developing an app, the handset will be 'always on', charging, and being used for 8hrs+ all at the same time!
Addictive Japanese quasi-RPG games are a separate matter though..

Bootloader D2.37 screen

So today in the car, my wife's D2 shut off, and when she tried to turn it on again, it came up to a black screen that says
Bootloader
D2.37
Battery OK
OK to program
Connect USB
Data Cable
Now, I have done everything under the sun to my Droid Incredible. I love that phone, but it's mine. I have never messed with my wife's D2. I never even rooted it. It has been nothing but a glitchy mess ever since she broke the first one, and got this as an insurance replacement. I honestly don't know much about it. I've never been a fan of Motorola.
I took it in to a VZW store and the guy told me it's broken, and a replacement is being mailed out, but won't get here till Monday. I cancelled the insurance long ago, so I'm guessing it's a warranty coverage?
Anyhow, my question I guess is this thing truly fried, or do I now have a license to mess around with it, since a replacement is coming? And what if anything can I mess around with? I know VZW employees at their stores know very little and when it comes to the technical aspects of the Android OS, they know even less. (I actually argued with an employee a year ago over how worthless Task killers are and he should stop installing them onto peoples phones for them,. before I had to stop and walk away)
Have you tried to flash a stock SBF to it yet?
I know this really isn't on topic, but could you explain why task killers are useless? Not that I don't believe you, I just always though that I was saving battery by not having the CPU work as hard. I also have noticed that my phone always seems to lag until I end whatever program I was just in after going back to the home screen and trying to run something else. I'm on an Eris currently, just got a DROID 2 have not put it on my account yet though.

It's not fried at all. But you need to keep the battery pulled out for now. When the battery gets low at the screen you are at, it becomes "Unable to Program" which horribly means that you have to either pop in a different, fully charged battery, or acquire a factory programming cable which can be bought from Team Blackhat. This is funny you asked this question because my factory programming cable came in today. They are very handy to have around if you will ever be messing around with the software on a Motorola Android device. Basically to get to any other screen from that, you have to use Motorola's own programming software which is called RSD Lite, and you can find plenty of links to here in this forum. It doesn't take long at all to download and install, just a couple of minutes. What you do with that program is use it to re-program the phone with the original software, which Moto calls an SBF in this case. Also which you can find in these forums. Sorry I can't give you any links, I'm multi-tasking as it is. Just look for SBF and RSD Lite. But the number one thing right this second is TAKE THE BATTERY OUT until you are about to program. Good luck bro!

Hey,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the replacement phone arrived from VZW and we just sent the old one back. I would have loved to try to play with it. It's funny you say that about the battery. She has a VERY low battery and had just plugged it into the car charger. That charger acts funny with inconsistant charging. I just thought maybe the charger sent a surge or something that fried it.
Oh well. She doesn't like me playing with her phone anyway, but if I could use the excuse "it's dead anyway" she didn't care.

Ever since the release of Froyo 2.2 and even Eclair 2.1, Task killers became obsolete. They are used under the assumption that they save battery life, but actually they don't and they cause instability in the Operating system. There are countless articles on this if you google it. A task killer indiscriminately force closes apps that are running in the backround even they aren't truly running. Meaning they are loaded into the Ram, but they are not using any processor cycles...i.e. not causing any battery drain. The OS loads certain programs and scripts into the Ram, so when the device needs it, it can open it much faster. If the task killer shuts them down, the OS needs to reload them causing the phone to appear slower, and possibly more processor cylce....i.e. more battery drain.
The even worse part is that the android OS shares services between apps and programs. So if a service from one app is shared with another, but the task killer shuts it down, it will cause a repeated cycle of the phone reopening, but the task killer constantly closing it. This in turn uses MORE processor cycles and MORE battery power.
The first few android versions didn't manage memory well so task killers were important, but the OS has evolved to where they are more detrimental than good. And moron kiosk workers know nothing about it, but install it on unknowing customers phones for them thinking it is something the customer needs. THAT is the part that annoys me.

Can't wait for Android battery efficiency to catch up with Apple (small rant)

I own a Transformer Wi-Fi 16GB model. I have owned this since August when i got it for my birthday. I am a Huge android fan boy, recently at work for a thank you gesture, our small dev team received 4 ipad2s as a thank you from management.
I gave the iPad to my fiancée who is pretty much all Apple, (iPhone, mac pro personal and mac pro laptop work and now ipad2)
Last night i just charged both devices to 100%.
On Transformer (no dock) I turned unit off and turned back on and started NO applications.
on ipad2 i did nothing, just charged and removed it from charger first.
Removed Transformer from charger afterwards.
Went to bed at midnight.
woke up at 8am
IPad2 was still at 100%
Transformer - 95%
iPad2 is on latest iOS 5.01
Transformer - is on latest 8.6.5.19 and CPUSpy showed 8 hours of Deep Sleep
So the Transformer is performing as it should battery wise it just pales in comparison to the ipad2 and the battery management shows.
I can use the iPad2 very moderately throughout the week and never have to charge it.
the Transformer i have to charge every few days with the same moderate usage.
just such a bummer, everyone around me is jumping ship to Apple iPhones and iPads
here i am loyal to Android since the G1 when it launched, Mytouch, and my now Samsung Vibrant and Transformer Tablet.
I feel sometimes I am on the losing team. I am and WILL hold out for Ice cream sandwich but if ICS doesn’t perform like it should, I fear I may have to jump ship too.
there is only one thing i hate the most about Android.... the Lag/stutter in apps and home screen swipes.
iOS never does this at all yet every iteration of Android always has some type of frame rate/lag in the system.
yes i know people say Root and get on another rom but why should I have to? ios people don’t have to do that, their OS just works with no lag so why cant Android get rid of their stutter?
ok rant over.
You said you opened it and started no apps. But most apps auto start up on boot. Are you using a task killer?

Not sure a difference of 5% qualifies as "pales" Also Transformer is running multiple apps in background from last use. ipad most likely not running any if not started during this session.
And what is the size of each battery? Did you take that into account?

no i dont use a task killer, i used to on gingerbread andd froyo roms on my phone but after hearing everyone come down with the fire from hell like rain if they found out you were using a task killer on Honeycomb (because honeycomb is supposed to be great at App Management) i dont use a task killer.
the only apps i have on my transformer are the default apps and words with Friends.
also verified while charger was still plugged in and after tf101 was rebooted, that the recent apps or current runnin apps icon showed no apps running (im sure there were some other core android apps running in memory on boot up)
Also iPad2 was rebooted as well. i work in QA at my software company so i pay attention to detail and steps and made sure that both devices were as close to a specific state as possible for this test. in a nice world i would have taken an average with different app scenarios but i didnt feel like it for this personal test.
i the Device is in Deep Sleep then power and app management should be superb and they are for Android but compared to iOS app and power management not so much.
i even loaded PULSE RSS feed aggregator on both devices and the experience is night and day.
nice fast and fluid on the iPad2
on the TF101 with the same feeds and pages, very slugish and laggy and takes more time to draw each individual image in the windows.

Pales when combined with my ipad2 usage over a week compared to my Transformer usage over a week.
i can go over a week with no charge with an iPad2
i cant go more than 2-3 days with out a charge with a TF101
so deep sleep drain with nothing running on a freshly charged device showign 5% drain over night is a positive indicator of where your battery usage is headed with this device.

Im sure this would make a difference throughout a week period (which might be why i need a charge quicker over a week period vs. the ipad)
however i would expect if a device is in deep sleep, that its power/app and battery management would be a little better on par thats all.
i am in no way trying to start a war which i can feel is about to come, not looking for people to come down on me.
I am a true Android devoted user, i just can see the differences between the OS's with small things.
overall the Android experience satisfied so much more than the ipad does which is why i did not keep it and let the fiancee have it but there are some things to be desired from the iPad2 thats all.
Are you honestly *****ing about losing 5% battery over 8 hours? Really? Not to mention you were apparently running CPUSpy, so obviously the tablet wasn't completely idle as you have tried telling us 5000 times.
I sell iPad 2 devices and haven't seen this amazing comparison between the two devices in regards to battery life... My Transformer has lasted longer than the iPad many times so I don't know, every device is different I guess!

i dont care what your running, when you start up android, basically every app you have auto starts up. that is why when your phone starts up you cant just hop on and use it that second. get a task killer. if you want to do a test like this, please do it correctly before ranting to the community.
1. each device fully charged
2. kill all running tasks/apps on each device
3. either do the exact same thing on each device(with the same wifi/3g or whatever) or keep them idle and only check every hour
theese arent the best ways to test but there a whole lot more accurate then what you were doing
No one should be a fan of anything. If you think having better battery life is the most important part of your tablet experience, then get the ipad 2.
For me, the flexibility of android trumps the ipad's battery life. But that's just me.
This is capitalism. We shoudn't have a team mentality here. If you think the ipad suits your needs better, then get it. No drama here.
ok a few problems with that rant first as someone above said you were using cpu spy which uses resources and seccond turning on and off the tablet is the largest and quickest way to lose battery. when i reboot i expect to loose about 3% battery because of the power required so that 5% is perfectly reasonable

Well, you know, I read this, and I can't help but think, and sorry to be rude but... honestly, "who cares????". Are you away from electricity for more than 2-3 days at a time more than once a year? Maybe you like taking week-long camping trips to campsites with no electricity? Maybe? I don't know, but for most people I know, 2-3 days is tons. I just charge mine up overnight, so I never have any downtime due to charging. I'm struggling to see what the big deal is. I mean, yes, 2-3 days is less than a week, but does this really affect you?
Cheers!
I don't really think it's possible to match iOS in battery life...
1. It's real multi tasking on Android, apps consumes more power
2. Android itself is not as efficient as iOS (java vs Objective-C)
I would be skeptical of any device that after 8 hours (assuming you sleep eight hours) still reports 100% battery.

It's not impossible, my captivate does this with certain firmware.
3 points I want to bring up.
1 age of battery. It sounds like you have had the TF longer than the ipad. Which may say that the battery has not been calibrated correctly yet. Also older batteries lose their charge.
2 multitasking. Android actually leaves open apps and processes running. Ios will freeze or suspend them. Android's approach will use more battery.
3 your approach at testing such stats could use some improvement. For one, you could look at the processes running in stead of the apps or the open window list. That list is very innacurate at showing what is actually open.
Lastly imho how long either of these stay on is not really a point I would consider bickering about. For what the TF and ipad do the battery life is well past my expectations. Laptops and netbooks seem like a waste of money now for a good portion of the population in comparison to the computing power, portability and battery life of a tab.

Not until a tablet that I can type without lag, get a full office suite that handles more than one document and store a single file larger than 4GB, lol
These are just some basic stuff on PC.
I own an iPad 1 and a transformer. I use my iPad most days and my transformer about two or three times a week. The iPad still last longer. I don't see why everyone is so defensive about it, the iPad does last longer.
They OP said how he feels and that the didn't want to start a war. I don't understand why every thread is criticized by someone. End mini rant.
I have the OG iPad and the TF. The battery is better on the iPad. However the keyboard dock and additional charge time is nice. We can get into battery size and calibration and how OS runs background apps and battery drain. I'm just saying battery wise I agree with you, but compared to the Galaxy Tab and Dell Streak 7 I'm pretty pleased with the TF battery. I wish I could do that with my Motorola Atrix.
I'm ok with custom roms. They are fun and can help also with battery life.
Best of luck.

I completely with this. My experience with the ipad tells me the same thing. Battery does last longer with the ipad. That said, to me all the advantages of android outweighs (by a lot) the battery disadvantage.
Again, to the op. If you feel battery is the most important thing about a tablet, then I recommend you go with the ipad. I am not a fan of anything. I simply want what's best for everyone.

Tablet charging and running hot

I started having this weird problem the past few days. My tablet seems to become very hot while charging. It also runs quite hot when on wifi. As a result the battery performance seems to be degrading. Any light on this...our has anyone faced similar problem. A possible solution to this would be highly appreciated.

if you read the user manual which comes with the tablet ( pdf is also available on official website) they have mentioned it in manual that tablet can get hot while charging and using processor intensive tasks like wifi and games. They have also said that it will not affect the longevity of tablet or battery in any way . My tablet does get a little warm while charging and after heavy usage. i guess its universal

I wouldn't worry if the tablet was getting a little warm. But the moment i turn on the screen, the left side of the tablet. both back and front become exceedingly warm even without running any intensive programs. The issue started about 2-3 days back only. i never had this problem before.
While charging the tablet is literally quite hot, and like I said more on the left side.
I think I need to go to a service center to get it checked.

If the battery gets hot, the effects are similar to those of overcharging. You know how bad overcharging would be. So I recommend you to take a deeper look into the issue.
Taking it to service center is a good idea; but since the service center would wipe your tablet clean anyway, so why don't you check if there are any background processes that have been causing this acting up lately? Messengers like whatsapp/line, screen lock apps, weather and news widgets, adware/free games with ad are examples of the apps that would be taking background resources, you would like to check whether you have installed new apps like that.
Most background processes usually won't cause your battery to act up, except when they got stuck on something. You probably couldn't fix it by yourself so you would better track them down and remove them.
TasKiller is one of the app that could show you background processes. There are countless others good app for the same purpose.
My tablet has been on charge (while off) for almost 24hrs and still hasn't fully charged yet.
What gives?

Do you use the stock wall charger to charge it?

How hot does your RAZR M run?

Ok - so I just got our new RAZR M's today.
It has been about 97 degrees out here for the past few days and my phones, which were shipped 2 day must have been baking in a warehouse and/or the delivery truck. The entire cardboard box felt really really warm when it got delivered and I let the phones sit out for a couple of hours to cool before I even powered them on.
Because of this, I'm paranoid that there is some permanent damage to the phones - my one phone that I tested so far seems to be running pretty warm.
My house is set at 77 degrees...but I was working in my office which is probably closer to 82 or so because of my computer equipment. I connected the phone, skipped activation, rooted, and did a couple of factory resets over the course of about 45 minutes. It was charging off my laptop USB with the supplied cable.
I just feel that the back of the phone got really warm...warmer than any other phones I have used. The wifi was on for a bit while I downloaded superuser and OTA, etc...but I really wasn't doing anything taxing on the phone - just going into settings, updating su, etc.
I don't know if I should go to the Verizon store to get these replaced tomorrow or what... Like I said, I'm paranoid they are running too hot - can you all chime in with your experiences of how warm these get?
Also - I don't have a case on it yet...so that might influence how warm I think it feels.
thanks!

My phone gets very hot when charging and doing everyday tasks like Facebook and G+. You have nothing to fear my friend
However, I recommend finding an app that will read your battery temperature and posting it here. Use the CPU-Z app on play store. My phone is currently 37.5 C, which is 99.5 F I believe?
