ICS should already be available! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Dear community,
I'm italian and yesterday I called the Samsung's customer service, just to "test the water" about the release time window. The one on the other part of the line told me what we already know, that there is no ETA about the RELEASE date of the update. He told me another thing though:
The update is already done and it's being rolled out for the various devices, in chunks.
I then insisted on asking at least a vague endline, and he ended up telling me that I could send my tablet to Samsung ('cause I've got a no-brand one) and pay for the upgrade RIGHT NOW!
My idea is then: is there anyone willing to send his or her tablet back to samsung and pay for the upgrade? I can't as my parents use it daily to read the newspaper. We could make a collect to pay the volunteer the support costs.
P.S.
I've got a P7500 (WiFi+3G) tablet, and the customer support guy talked about this, unbranded version. I don't know about any other model.

if this is true, then please take one for the team, get your tab updated, then please pass me the rom
i can use camera from it and could also refresh video from it.

pay for it?
no way in hell

Oh ya forgot that line. Ya u shouldn't have to pay for it, for sure.

Never heard about paying to get sooner an update that's going to be released for free...
I think he didn't know what he was talking about or there must have been some kind of misunderstanding on his or your part (no offense meant).

pay to update? not sure what Sammy is smoking lately.

I'm sure payment for the "upgrade" will be through wire transfer, and you'll never see your Tab again.

Perhaps it was an attempt to upsell to a Samsung galaxy tab 2 which already has ics. Apple does the same thing were you can sell back your Mac for an upgrade. Otherwise, maybe they meant send it in for repair and it would get the latest update. I work for an OEM and we update every phone that comes in.

hey way slow the conversation
I just reported what the consumer support told me. I don't think he was misleaded in the conversation, we were talking about Android 4.0, specifying it has been sent to the GS2 first. Most probably Samsung simply doesn't want to let its servers collapse, nothing more, nothing less. Thus, being the software already developed, they already have the ICS in their support centers and are able to upload it in the tablet. The cost is not for paying for upgrade, but simply 'casue it's not an issue, thus it's a payed job.
It was simply an idea to have the official ROM before the official release date

Mmh, quite hard to imagine that if this was the case the ROM hasn't been leaked yet...
Of course, I hope this is true

Can't be true! I think a double check made by someone else in another country could lead us to interesting developments of this "news"....
Someone in a different country interested in a phone call ???

CS reps surely have never BSed anyone before. Never.

What was the price that they offered to get it done? Perhaps I will give them a call some day soon to see if they give any update for us Canadians

According to a tweet released by SamFirmware a few days ago, it seems that Samsung Galaxy Tab will receive the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update at the end of Q1 (1st quarter) 2011. We are not sure if this is true or not but according to them this news is “based on FW and insider news”.
We all know that Android 2.3 is already getting tested on different devices such as the new PlayStation Phone and Google accidentally released a video showing how the new android OS works. And if we take into account the fact that carriers still have to update their mobile devices to Android 2.2, it makes sense to wait a bit until everyone is on the same OS.
I am sure that Android 2.3 will arrive soon also based also on the fact that Google’s CEO and Chairman of the Board, Eric Schmidt, confirmed at the Web 2.0 Summit that Gingerbread will be launched “in the next few weeks”.
We attached bellow a few videos from Google and from the leaked PSPhone which gives you an insight on how the new update performs/looks like. Do you think there will a lot of improvements compared to 2.2? Will this update be fully optimised to work on the Samsung Galaxy Tab? We will have to wait and see
thank you for the information this is good news
Hope the browser on the tab will default to desktop mode

The reason ot doesnt is because so many websites are Android friendly/have Android only features. You can get other browsers that perform as well/better that have desktop mode.

Given that 2.3 still isn't out for any platform yet in a final state, and the usual length of time it takes for OEMs to release a customised firmware for any platform (how many phones have 2.2 that were "promised" it?), I'll be amazed if it turns up by the end of March.
Here's hoping though.
2.3 is a lot more modular than older revisions were. In theory it should take less time and effort to roll out than 2.2 did.

An option so it at least remembers that youve set it to desktop version would be appreciated, then those that want to keep the mobile versions are unaffected whilst those who want a full web experience dont have to change their useragent everytime they load their browser.

Well, the Gingerbread-equipped Google Nexus S phone is basically a slightly improved Samsung S, so hopefully APKs and other hacked ROM bits will soon start becoming available for the Tab too
Firmware dumps are already available (on this very forum), but of course they are not usable as-is. Still, it won't take long to see some results. The Gingerbread source code will be available later this month via AOSP, in the meantime the SDK can be studied via the emulator.

i would also be interested to know whether the galaxy tab will receive the honeycomb update to.that updatewill support tablet devices, but samsung are awful at updating their devices, they want pepe to upgrade to new hardware,I suspect that they are going to release galaxy tab 2!
good stuff, cant wait!
The biggest question is: will the VOIP module be crippled?
I wouldnt keep my hopes up until end of june that is. I really doubt we will get 2.3 before summer, seeing all those years how slow updates are by all companies. Just my 2 cents.
Sadly, most this info is no good to US stuff. It's all when the carrier releases it.

Yea, that may be the case so we dont know the for sure date, but with this news we know we should be getting it anyway.
I hope that will fix the problem with Exchange email not being able to display HTML emails. I spent several hours on the phone with Samsung this week and they determined they couldn't fix the problem but they "hoped" an upgrade to 2.3 would.
This issue has something to do with SSL security. HTML emails do come in for things like Gmail and Hotmail but with some exchanges, the emails come in as plain text.
Paul.
So there's now a half working port for the SGS.
Wonder if the tab will get the same love? I'm considering switching to an iPad + SGS to get the best of both worlds, simply because i'm underwhelmed by the dev support of the Tab.

I have a unactivated Sprint Tab ( bought it outright, no contract ) how, or will, I be able to get firmware updated ?

European availability

I asked my local Samsung distributor on Facebook about availability and got a strange answer yesterday. They said it has been delayed because of Android software problems and should be here by end of July.
This sounds just like the rumour that i read about a week ago. I don't know what to think now. Does anyone have any information about this?
Only what you know - I have heard August as they ready 3.1 to ship with the device.
I picked up up a limited edition 10.1 on ebay for a reasonable price, and just got the upgrade to 3.1 so all's well on them here in the UK.
Perhaps see if you can get one from there if you can't wait...
I want a 3G tablet, so the LE is not a option, i already have a WIFI only Xoom for home use. Only thing that's holding me back from buying a Xoom 3G is the fact that the European Xoom's are not Google experience devices and don't get updates from Google.
So my only option for now is 10.1V, but I wonder if the 10.1V will get updates at all?
I don't understand how there can be a software problem. My Xoom runs on 3.1 for over a month now, also the GT10.1LE got the update and the GT10.1 was already released with 3.1 in US. And if i remember correctly then this rumor about software problems with Android 3.1 got already a response from Google and they said there is no such problems. So i just don't get it, how can Samsung make so much confusion...

Found this link on Samsung Poland Facebook page Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Poland at the end of June (Google translate)
In Poland there is now Samsung Mobile L!VE (http://www.samsungmobilelive.pl/o-sml.html).
I have already visited one stand and today I plan to see one more.
1. I have been told to expect it in the shops by the end of current month.
2. All specs on the stands list GT 10.1 with dual core 1,2 Ghz CPU (will try to take some photos 2day).
With recent pull back from 1,2 Ghz by Vodafone to 1,0 Ghz I really do not know what to think... especially that these stands are made by Samsung not some 3rd party company like Vodafone or independent distributor.

If you can, please ask if they have heard about the delay's because of Android software problems.
Vodafone changing the specs doesn't mean anything, it can be that they just released the information too early. This happened with Android 3.1 also, Adobe wrote in Android Market Flash update description that Android 3.1 is needed and this information was removed very fast and everything was denied until Google officially announced 3.1.
I found now one dealer in Germany that lists a release date. It is Conrad and they say on their webpage 4th of July 2011 for the 3G model. Let's see if that's true.
H.
I forgot the link: http://www.conrad.de/ce/ProductDeta...productcode=877127&zanpid=1514577257979813888
And the white 10.1 - june 30
http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/...hite-mit-Multi-Touch-Display/0403040&ref=list
And the black and white 8.9 - Juli 15
http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/...lack-mit-Multi-Touch-Display/0403040&ref=list
I don't have experience with Conrad. Are their expected delivery dates usually correct?

im not too sure how good my polish is but does that say that it has a 3.2mp camera and supports full hd? im quiet sure the 10.1 only supports 720p. so may be those specs are not 100%. thats to galtom for the pics thou. ne more info?
So, first release for Europe will be the 3G model?
Any news when the wifi only will be available?
That is exactly what it says.
Guys at the stand do not know anything about it as they do not really work for Samsung.
Basically there is a GREAT, BIG MESS around and with this tablet crated by Samsung . It is so big that now looks like even Samsung itself is not 100% sure what is coming out of his production lines.
If you ask Samsung through facebook or its websites in different countries you will get a lot of different answers but what seems to certain is:
all GT10.1 will run 1ghz tegra 2 soc
wifi will not have microsd
3g will have it
it should reach shops with android 3.1
touchwiz ux looks very good and works very good - for me it is actually more convinient and user friendly that google UI.

To be completly honest I have not asked as it is not the one I would buy :-(.
I shuold be later on 2day at another stand to compare unit model but do not know how reliable are infos given there.
As you see CPU shows 1,2 Ghz.... so I'd rather wait for something more official.
I just can not believe Samsung goes on (sill) making more mess, creating confusion and disinformation in regard of its tablet.
This is the first time I have seen official Samsung marketing showing 1.2Ghz... interesting
Have missed other stand 2day - sorry. And since it is a big holiday 2morrow in PL (not usual Sunday) I will not be able to get there 2morrow (it is not me but everything is essentially closed up) :-(.
Get back to you on this on Monday.

H.

Anyone a little shocked?

I am, and I'll tell you why.
Samsung hasn't even started building a GB ROM for our phone, and that's kind of weird to me, because I would think that they would have something.
I don't remember where I read this, and this could be wrong, but doesn't the carrier has to request the update, and then the manufacturer builds it? (I can be COMPLETELY wrong, so don't hold me to this) If that's true, then we may not see a GB build, because T-Mobile USA wouldn't request it.
Tell me what you think, because this interests me a lot.

It's not that, SamFirmware stated (and I honestly believe them, if they found all these leaks for other phones so quickly), that there's no Vibrant (SGH-T959) build, which could mean A LOT of things, possibly something as simple as Samsung is really lazy and doesn't want to upload it, but it would mean more.
I'm just saying, I don't know what's up, but I'd like to know more.
And they probably won't, at least not in the near future since there are a ****load of new 4G phones coming out in the near future. The Vibrant is old news already like yesterdays dirty laundry. Technology advances faster than you can fart.

I noticed that as well. But you have to remember that T-Mobile plays real dirty. Remember when we had 2.2 leaks back late November (JK2)? It didn't become official until #NeverAgain made such a huge PR mess for them that Samsung & T-Mobile had to release it. But it was up until then, that T-Mobile didn't want to update out phones because of the pending MT4G & SGS4G release, dirty mfers...
By the way this issue gets more complicated now with the AT&T merger. AT&T strongly believes that updates are not good for business. From their point of view if they don't do updates it gives users more reasons to upgrade to new phones.
So if TMo was borderline crap about this already, the adoption by AT&T is only going to delay things further.
What does that mean for us, enjoy the awesome roms on xda and forget about TMo.

Just read da tweets someone should just port from 4g to us
Ya boy
Ya, but Google kind of helped us all out with that. Its not up to the carriers if a phone is going to get an update anymore. If Manufactures want to use Android they have to abide by the 18 month update cycle this goes for carriers too. They have to provided updates to newer versions of Android during the first 18 month of a phones life. Our Vibrants really only have six months left of that 18 though. So don't expect an official Ice Cream Sandwich update. I wish google had been enforcing this rule back in the days of the original cliq and cliq xt. The poor XT didn't even get an update out of 1.5. I think Google has gotten tired of all the negative press that manufactures are developing because of the unwillingness to update phones. Of course as you we all know a lot of this has to do with carriers not wanting these updates or their need for unreasonable software packages they want add to the update packages.
How shock i am? Look at this pic.

Hmm I don't see it as a problem, well at least as long as we have the vibrant 4g, I'm just waiting for the sgs2, then I'll be gone
Well we cant be mad at samsung as its not there fault its tmobil. Most of us will be moving to hercules or sgs2 anyway so no worries crying over this in my opinion.
Yeah, I think it's time to accept the likelihood that Samsung/T-mo won't be providing much further development or support for the Vibrant given the new product lines. It doesn't mean it'll be obsolete though. Thanks developers!
what does it matter? theres literaly pages upon pages of custom rom's out there that are 100000x BETTER Then what any company puts out in the first place.
im pretty sure for a big majority of people here the first thing they do when they get a new phone is wipe it out and start over fresh.
what is it you want exactly, a bloated gingerbread rom from samsung full of **** you dont need or use?

[Mid-February] ISC update - variable dates from Asus

As i have been looking over the web, searching Asus's FB pages, there were some answers when TF101 will get ICS update.
But the problem is because different Asus people answer us differently.
NOTE! All quotes are from their FB pages, you can check them out.
Nr.1: From: "ASUS North America": soon. Its in the process of being approved by google. once that is done we will be able to push it out to you guys.
Nr.2: From: "ASUS": Possibly Feb. No confirmed dates at this point. -Mark, ASUS
Nr.3: From: "ASUS Serbia" Lepa vest za korisnike Transformer TF101. Ice Cream Sandwich za isti se očekuje polovinom februara. (meaning: we get it in mid Feb.)
So, what do you guys think? We get that ICS in mid feb, sooner or later?
I kinda bet its gonna be later than that
Signed.
id say somewhere between next week and mid February.
How about when we get it, we get it. There are so many threads dedicated to this topic already.
I don't think it will be mid February that's for a Serbia. I think Asia asus might be closer to truth.

I would have to say that this is just one too many threads about this update. Geez!
close this topic, asus has already announced the ICS update will be sometime during the last week of January (which also includes the first week of February). We can only wait and see if they are accurate.

The Mayan didn't say anything about SSC. So i would say no.
Asus NA is right for NA consumers. Mid-February seems correct if you're living in Serbia. It has nothing to do with NA consumers since the launch appears to be staggered based on location.
So for NA consumers it's "soon". End of story.
I think it will come when Federer wins the Australian Open. Or when Nadal breaks another knee or something.

Although I can't find it right now, I remember reading one of Asus's facebook comments that said the US and Taiwan will get the update at the same time.
Asus Italia said at the END of february.... Anyway i think it will released at the end of this one.... i HOPE
Only when asus hears no more complaints from disgruntled transformer prime customers unable to update to ics due to "unknown serial number" debacle.
I suggest all those who are complaining daily about the delay of ICS jump over to the prime forum and see how much fun they are having with the ICS update. Yes I would like the ICS update, but not at the expense of the problems the prime folks are having. Maybe it is best we don't have it just yet.
Can't wait!
I voted never.
I dont expect anything from modern capitalist companies who care about numbers and not persons and dont give a damn about customers who created the base for the prime and the future autobot and so on....
the same applies to samsung with galaxy s and ics.

dont expect anything from modern casino-capitalism multinational companies.

That's a lot of hate, but i agree, if I were to own this company i'd do everything for charity, making a profit is overrated!
I don't know how focused they can be on updating the old-gen Transformer, but I guess they will update, since both are catering to different market segments, and you might want to get the cheaper TF101 if it's good enough for you even with the TF201 out.
That said, I'm sure they'll be using the Prime as an ICS Guinea pig. I voted for mid-February, and I guess we'll get several minor updates after it's out (whenever it's out) for bug fixing (as it's been the case so far).
Damnit Asus... Yesterday they said "Awaiting Google approval", and now they're saying Mid-February...

I dont expect anything from modern capitalist companies who care about numbers and not persons and dont give a damn about customers who created the base for the prime and the future autobot and so on....
the same applies to samsung with galaxy s and ics.
the 40 million that put samsung in the mobile map.
dont expect anything from modern casino-capitalism multinational companies.

Android 5.0 and L as OS options for G3 on LG SmartWorld: a hint on an early update?

I have posted this in reddit and wanted to share it here too. While I was browsing the LG SmartWorld site, I clicked the phone selection link on the right to choose the G3. After choosing the G3 and hitting OK, a dialog appears asking the operation system of the phone and there are options for Android 5.0 and Android L. I also checked this with other phones and these only appear in G3 models. Maybe a hint towards an early Lollipop update?

Now that's interesting. Hopefully it IS a sign we'll be getting it soon.
Interesting link i found
Came across this in a google search in regards to android l looks like early files for the new OS maybe just for the boot process so far.

Why when i go to smartworld web it says my device not supported?? I have d855 32gb
D855 shows Android 4.4 and ANL, I think that one big update is coming
Android L is already being tested in Korea and Poland.

If You haven't made it up and Your friend seriously work as a tester - delete your post. Sharing anything related on any portal is violation of NDA and it can end very bad
dont think we will see L before 2015 definitely not before december 14
Do not expect many things.we are talking about LG the worst company in the updates. I wish to be wrong but something tell me that we will only see android L with the next release of lg g4. Lg usually brings the updates 3 months after Samsung and htc . Htc which promised fast update to m8 it states a few days ago that it will give the android L 90 days after received the stable version from Google. That means that the fast plan from htc is about 4 months from now. Guess now LG which slowest than a turtle.we are talking about 7 to 8 months. Which will be very near to the release of next g4. So it will wait a few months more to release the new g4 with the new lolipop experience. I wish to be wrong but lg has a very bad history.
LG G4 will be released with 4.4.....LG in a nutshell
Here's something

Lol that has to be a joke from them. They can't even get the carriers to release anything. So yeah 6 month isn't so unrealistic. Even for canadien android releases

I have no faith in LG but if they update this phone to 5.0 it will sell more of these for them. So we might get lucky cause they are greedy.
I believe that it will take longer than 6 months to get out to carriers (At&t still is on 10d.) But it could be possible for the international versions.

I have been saying for months we will all be surprised (not just LG, but all major OEM's) about how quick Android L will roll out to the flagship devices, it will be the fastest roll out so far!

If all of these guys have not been working with the preview build code and getting all their ducks in a row, i would be SHOCKED. This is a new way for google to announce the OS and i think they did it to give OEMS time to get stuff ready for fast updates. Once final code drops, i wouldnt be surprised to see OEMS releasing for certifications from carriers within a month. At least HTC and samsung! lol But here is the thing i keep hoping for. Samsung used to be HORRIBLE with updates, then they figured it out and now are one of the fastest (HTC still has the crown). LG Could do the same. Especially with all the time they should have already had with the base code (not any MAJOR changes really even in this latest preview). Fingers crossed. As long as i have this phone long enough to actually see the update. My tmobile jump and a nexus 6 or note 4 are almost tempting me, but i love this phone!
