Reading my mind my man! I'm looking to replace my X60 tablet. Stoked about the USB port to run my external DVD/CD combo unit.
I'm all over the Pro model....too bad it won't come out for a while. I'd really like to finally realize my "tablet on the go, PC at home" dreams
Definitely getting a Pro if the specs allow me to run the desktop apps I need, Solidworks probably being the most hungry of them.
Now that's what im talking about, finally, looks like MS sacked their old marketing department
If the hardware matches the ad quality then consider one unit sold!
Even with Windows 8, which i don't like, the Microsoft Surface Pro looks really nice.
i cannot justify the existence of a Windows RT device, but windows 8 x86 on a tablet is pretty decent. I have a feeling that the price on these is going ot be too high to even bother with.
EDIT: and seriously, why the "surface" name? are they killing off the old micosoft surface?

I think the old Surface was the stepping stone to this one.
In 2007 Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were asked about the future portable devices, Bill answered he imagined a "tablet form-factor" in which touch was the main interface person-device (this was all before Apple announced the first iPad, mind you). He also mentioned MS were working on something like this but the proyects weren't good enough to release because he imagined people needed something to type and write on, Digital Ink, I guess this is what he had in mind.

The old Microsoft Surface table is now called 'modelname' with Microsoft PixelSense (like the Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense).
So, the name is inherited from one big touch device to a smaller, more consumer oriented one.
This will be a hit or a miss.
Or they will be very succesfull (as a (cheaper?) alternative to the Ipad).
Or they will screw it up with a lack of compatibility/bugs/exclusive apps/.....

Apparently we won't have to wait. I just watched the keynote and at 26:30, SolidWorks is specifically mentioned as capable of being run on Surface. SWEET.

I watched the keynote too. At about 13:30 - 14:30 minute mark, you'll see the system crash and become unresponsive. The presenter had to grab a backup tablet to continue.
I doubt this bodes well for the system.

I've been running Microsoft software as dogfood for over a decade. I'm not worried - you should have seen XP 6 months before launch. That worked out OK.

Well thats the whole thing of showing beta software right? Crashes could happen and it was not Windows which was the problem but most likely the netflix app which was probably thrown together rather quickly. They probably wanted to show it anyway so they were able to mention some "high profile" apps will be out on launch to ease the "but it has not apps! FAIL"-type of crowd.
It was quite a smart move, too bad it crashed. But thats technology… It happens. To blame Microsoft for having a software crash is kind of narrow minded as the product is far away from launch still. Anybody using any kind of smartphone/tablet knows it can almost certainly crash at some point, even the iPhone/iPads on final software. It was just a bit unfortunate it happend on stage.
Non the less, what a great product! It made my day Can't wait to test it out...
Now this is what Metro was desinged for! Though I still would never use it on a desktop or non-touch laptop but it looks great on the Surface.

Well, yes and no.
The app that was thrown together and crashed other things was IE, or the metro UI, or both, or something else that crashed them both. If you saw the keynote, you would understand.

So I was just reading about, Froyo 2.5 will this ever be available for the HERO or would that most likely be on the upcoming EVO?
I was reading about some of the features including the "Portable App Engine"
Using the new Portable App Engine, Android will now be able to run Palm Pre and iPhone applications using a virtual machine.
While the Pre only has about 2,000 applications, Apple’s iPhone is currently the industry leader with 150,000+. iPhone’s best games are very desirable to non-iPhone owners, for example, as they generally offer superior graphics and level of gameplay, that is, until Froyo comes out.
Portable App Engine is a "20%" project started by 2 Google engineers – Joseph Smarr and Ikai Lan – and got its name from Google’s flagship App Engine.
Google is notorious for allowing their engineers to work 20% of their time (1 day a week) developing their own ideas and releasing the most ingenious ones to the public. For example, Gmail, Google News, Orkut, Google Talk, and Google Sky Map were all "20%" projects
Any news When this is becoming available? Or if there is any dev out there with and leaks?
Seriously? We dont even have 2.1 yet. What makes you think 2.5 will be out any time soon??
Wasnt this an April fools joke?
I think the Hero will get FroYo eventually, like 8 months after every other phone does. By then, I will be at least two handsets away from the Hero.
I do happen to have a few Google engineers on speed dial though, let me give them a ring.

FroYo = Android 2.2 not 2.5. It really doesn't matter.
Our phones probably won't handle the app engine any way since everything seems to be going snapdragon. I would like to see a Android Tegra phone my self. but thats besides the point.
wouldnt a virtual app engine running iphone apps somehow be illegal? i dont think apple would let that happen.

You, sir, are correct. I've heard from reliable sources that 2.2 is in it's testing stage. Also, someone posted pictures on 4chan of a HTC Magic running Froyo.
I'd normally be very skeptical about anything I hear on 4chan, but these look legit. From what I've read, they're going to slow Android core updates to a crawl now that the OS has reached maturity. They are going to put all the Google apps in the market starting with this release. (ie Dialer, Music, Youtube, Gmail etc etc) That'll allow them to update those components individually so people using certain devices won't get stuck using old software for an unreasonable amount of time. *cough*
This'll help reduce the fragmentation issues that have plagued the platform from the get-go.

I saw these pictures, but never really realized they where from a Magic. Looks like we could possibly run 2.2, but again that portable app engine seems like it wouldn't work well on our phones. Java's mantra of "Write once, run anywhere" doesn't take in to affect the performance of the host machine. Google could prove me wrong, they have before.
What's the download?
OK... so I went to the android police site about froyo. It absolutely sounds way out there, but what is the download they're linking to? Anyone download it to see what it is? I'm kinda scared to thinking that it'll pop up a virus or something but I don't think android police would do that. Would they? Anyone try it?

well i actually like it. it just shows how awesome windows phone 7's full blown version will be. isnt it ironic that most of the KIN website is done is flash.... lol silverlight WHAT?!

lol, A wink to iPad/iPhone/iTouch maybe??
But yeah, strange indeed.
My impression regarding KIN
The buttons of the KIN2 could be somewhat bigger, maybe have some other look to it, They look like shiny, cheap plastic buttons out of toys..
But then again, these are mock ups, maybe they look and feel great IRL (doubtfull, but no way to tell at this moment).
The Kin1 looks like a girls-phone, there the design works, and the buttons actually look better.
The bottom piece is bigger than to top piece, I wonder how that will work out.
But the resolution of both screens are low:
KIN1 320x240 (QVGA!!)
KIN2 480x320 (HVGA)
And Kin2 is supposed to be for video watching?
Come on, please enter the year 2010, I am not asking 1080i on a mobile, but VGA/WVGA is totally feasable..
EqX
What the hell does kin mean? Why did my apartment cut off my cable? Why is my mom orderin cable from at&t? Why am i mad? Why am i writing in all caps? Why do i prefer kin 2!?
I think it's a good first attempt at cutting into the Android/Palm market. I know plenty of chicks that would be into this stuff.

So these are original, running wp7 core, purpose designed, well built, purpose packed, zune pass over the air, updates over the air... retailed with Verizon which the kids like...
I think MS got a winner, it will sell well, the UI is gorgeous.
If this gets the backing of XDA this could be amazing.
The lack of 3rd party apps is a slight worry though.
I wasnt expecting anything good with these phones after all they are made by "SHARP" and SHARP suck d**K in technology products. For those that own a product sorry...what ever you say it sucks and I am not interested in your comment.
Bare in mind that these 2 phones cover the section of crappy (low tech) handsets in the market.....like from Nokia, SonyErric, LG etc.
If you actually compare the CRAPPY handsets out there and chuck these 2 in with them these phones actually PWN them all !
SO well done introducing something new and PWN'ing the crappy handset market.....NEXT !!

You clearly haven't seen some of there Japanese phones, there actually quite good.
They look 'kin awful.
I think the KIN ONE looks cute we will have to wait to see what they really like?
This Kin stuff, aren't Microsoft like wasting resources on another seperate os?
This is kind of neat. You could argue it's not really a smartphone, but I like it. It's a brilliant piece of minimalism - it's all the essentials done well and nothing else. The big question for me would be the browser. If the browser's great then I can really live without most apps, if not I can imagine it feeling restrictive after a while.
To the gentleman above, I don't really think that MS is wasting resources here. They're probably reusing a lot of the same code, and just tweaking the UI for a different effect. But what an effect! I really don't think there's anything else like this one the market.
Neither appeal to me...you would have thought MS could have done way better than those relics!
Do we even know what screen size each device has? I will say I am kind of envious of the fact that the Kin 2 has what could be a nice 8mp camera with flash.
Honest to god those might just be the two most hideous phones I've ever seen.

Probably not. It is an industry first, but it's also pretty much just a gimmick, like 3D. I would have been much more interested in a dual core phone, or even an Evo with an updated processor.
I can see how it would be good for mulittasking...if it had the power of a dual core processor...but the specs are very underwhelming, and the battery life is going to be horrible.
Its not that bad a phone but sprint did themselves a great disservice by hyping it up so much. People where expecting something huge and instead got a phone.

Yes. Yes you are.
The issue is that it "may" be a good phone once some people get their hands on it and play with it.
But you cannot deny the overwhelming negative response (see their facebook page) as a pretty big sign that it may not be a good phone.
If you look at it from a sales/marketing POV they would much rather have a phone that everyone thinks looks really cool at a press release, but then falls a little short of expectation in the real world. At least they sell some phones, and the high initial praise helps sustain the life of the phone.
Now look at this situation, especially in this economy, 99% of the initial response is bordering "verbal lynch mob", even if it a good phone, how many people will actually give it a chance?
First impressions can kill...........
It's an interesting concept, I'll give them that, but it's made by Kyocera, looks like a brick and not a lot of developers will go out of their way to make use of both screens.

I've seen almost nothing on the phone, but I agree. The hype was the worst of it.
I recall saying something similar would be great. I dropped the thought when tablets came.
EDIT-saw the video. WTF? Now I know why people said brick. I no longer have any interest even in passing.
The biggest issue is that from what i understand, its a basic Android. Phone with a 2nd gen snap dragon running 2 screens. Won't that hurt performance?

Actually its the second gen check out engadget fire more proof...i don't feel like providing it.
. Under the hood there's a 1GHz second-gen Snapdragon running Android 2.2 -- we'll forgive the older software because Kyocera had to do extensive customization to add dual-screen support to seven core apps like the browser, email, and messaging.

I admit, it looks really nice.
But I can't think of a single purpose where it would serve me any better than my phone would. It's only slightly less of a hassle to carry around than a laptop.. and a laptop can do much more.
I honestly don't get the craze.
I'll also admit that it looks really nice but the fact that it's a Samsung product makes me very reluctant to buy one. I wonder how well they will support and update it.
it has nothing to so with quality smh... Tvs don't receive updates and the fact that you didn't have an Android smartphone that received frequent updates nullifies your statement, I'd you were an epic owner your response would be different, my other point is that this thing does everything a smartphone can do basically, there are not that many apps optimized for the tablet. Android only released the sdk for honeycomb like a week or two ago, right now it has potential but that's about it

not true strictly, actually...

i dont have a laptop, but i love my ipad. with it having gone out of date just last week, i already am skimming the market for a tablet. i like having an android and ios device, but that samsung tablet looks sooooooo nice.... i'll probably keep my perfectly good ipad around for another couple of years, but still its always fun to look for upgrades...
i use my ipad as a laptop. i do homework on it and stuff. even compiled a powerpoint on it for a science project. but it has many shortcomings that android doesnt have. the problem with android is google mostly only makes apps centered around itself like gmail, google goggles, all search email and youtube stuff. only apple makes the slideshow, word, and all the other fantastic apps i rely on heavily on an almost daily basis. android doesnt have that yet.
also, nobody can say games on android are better than ios. nobody. mirror's edge, which came out with the ipad i think, is still better than any xoom game... and infinity blade has me totally addicted...
for now, apple has it right. the tables may turn soon, but if you are thinking about buying a tablet, i'd go with the ipad 2.
btw i'm not going to upgrade to the 2. cameras are worse than my evo's. why use that? only good thing is dual core. yes, slim and smart cover is nice, but not enough to upgrade when all i baisically use the ipad for is work in and out of school.
Well, the time has come.
Kinuser1 has gotten into the phone and was able to reskin and change configs a little bit. Making the phone have no icons and no status bars on bottom (time and recent).

Also a few glitches were found.
He stated a guide will be put up tomorrow sometime to show how he made the Kin Writable so lets see if hes telling us the truth or not. This could be a big breakfor us. Crossing Fingers

Indeed sir. If I get access to the KIN's filesystem, then I'll try to make some modifications to Themes, Apps, and maybe Sounds.
Interesting, very interesting.
But on the other hand, i think that skinning is the last thing we should do, if the OS storage is opened.
Trying to open any non-kin-native App and/or the storage to the "user" like crazy peeps could be better.
So i like that "few glitches" instead "reskin"

you can follow all the progress on FaceBook page.
I personally want to reskin the most. If new OS becomes available, then I'll update.
I guess that i will wait. The relationship between facebook and me became a bit cold.
He said he will be posting a guide here on XDA around 5:30 or 6pm. Hes at school. Once this guide is up Im looking at you Kussack to get cracken if this thing is real. We want a new OS lol

wow, I've been reading a lot of John's and 1's post, I'm by far the biggest noob to this but I want to help.

and I love the thought of windows phone 7 on the kin, even a watered down version would be enough for me. I would just like to see some apps and facebook integration back, that would be awsome. Idonno something like the live blocks on phone 7 with the contact syncing we see in phone 7 or even the non M kins.
calm down, calm down. Putting another OS here is not a piece of cake, and in any attempt, there is the (high) risk of bricking. That including a normal flash, not a experimental space orbital thing.
Also, we dont know if we can replace things around, or just put red instead green in colour things... so slooow down.
who is in the line to do the tests? I'm not buying another kin though! (3 is too much).
I'm all for exploring this rabbit hole as far as it goes, but I agree with JohnKussack that we should calm down about this being the breakthrough for a new OS. It may or may not be. Personally, I think even some small improvements to the OS we have can go a long way, such as being able to add or remove (Win CE?) apps, change the skin, replace the browser, enable flash, etc.
yea your right, just wishful thinking

how many have you bricked xD I think 1st we should come up with a recovery, which I'm sure your opensorce file system could help with
Just 1 one (and was enough, rofl).
I'm kinda .... skeptical yet. Personally, i doubt that a new os is feasible and think that just "filetweaking" is available (which would be OK for testing apps).
On the recovery... that's why i got another one. It's older brother is awaiting in a fridge.
Unfortunately, the mtp->storage wont be an option for it.
One thing I would like to see honestly is the Kin being able to play games. Not through Wifi either. games like angry birds or something.
I might be able to help.

I might be able to do some testing on things. I am new to kins, actually mine is arriving soon, but not new to bricking phones. I have done alot of work with android, and now have a tablet. I use it so much, I am giving up my thunderbolt, and switching to the kin twom to save money on data. I like the look of the phone, but I can't resist hacking away at every piece of electronics that get into my hands. Anyway, I am looking forward to being part of the kin community, and I hope more people get into this phone.
