So I was just reading about, Froyo 2.5 will this ever be available for the HERO or would that most likely be on the upcoming EVO?
I was reading about some of the features including the "Portable App Engine"
Using the new Portable App Engine, Android will now be able to run Palm Pre and iPhone applications using a virtual machine.
While the Pre only has about 2,000 applications, Apple’s iPhone is currently the industry leader with 150,000+. iPhone’s best games are very desirable to non-iPhone owners, for example, as they generally offer superior graphics and level of gameplay, that is, until Froyo comes out.
Portable App Engine is a "20%" project started by 2 Google engineers – Joseph Smarr and Ikai Lan – and got its name from Google’s flagship App Engine.
Google is notorious for allowing their engineers to work 20% of their time (1 day a week) developing their own ideas and releasing the most ingenious ones to the public. For example, Gmail, Google News, Orkut, Google Talk, and Google Sky Map were all "20%" projects
Any news When this is becoming available? Or if there is any dev out there with and leaks?
Seriously? We dont even have 2.1 yet. What makes you think 2.5 will be out any time soon??
Wasnt this an April fools joke?
I think the Hero will get FroYo eventually, like 8 months after every other phone does. By then, I will be at least two handsets away from the Hero.
I do happen to have a few Google engineers on speed dial though, let me give them a ring.

Yes the Portable app Engine was for April Fools.

Yeah, thats what I thought.
that sucks!!! lol that sounded pretty DAMN cool thing to be able to do that lol
Lmao, I almost feel bad for not putting up a "this is an April fools joke" note on that page. Almost.

FroYo = Android 2.2 not 2.5. It really doesn't matter.
Our phones probably won't handle the app engine any way since everything seems to be going snapdragon. I would like to see a Android Tegra phone my self. but thats besides the point.
wouldnt a virtual app engine running iphone apps somehow be illegal? i dont think apple would let that happen.
that link you posted seemed pretty bogus to me.
also, everyone is aware apple released the sdk for the ipad, right?

You, sir, are correct. I've heard from reliable sources that 2.2 is in it's testing stage. Also, someone posted pictures on 4chan of a HTC Magic running Froyo.
I'd normally be very skeptical about anything I hear on 4chan, but these look legit. From what I've read, they're going to slow Android core updates to a crawl now that the OS has reached maturity. They are going to put all the Google apps in the market starting with this release. (ie Dialer, Music, Youtube, Gmail etc etc) That'll allow them to update those components individually so people using certain devices won't get stuck using old software for an unreasonable amount of time. *cough*
This'll help reduce the fragmentation issues that have plagued the platform from the get-go.

I saw these pictures, but never really realized they where from a Magic. Looks like we could possibly run 2.2, but again that portable app engine seems like it wouldn't work well on our phones. Java's mantra of "Write once, run anywhere" doesn't take in to affect the performance of the host machine. Google could prove me wrong, they have before.
What's the download?
OK... so I went to the android police site about froyo. It absolutely sounds way out there, but what is the download they're linking to? Anyone download it to see what it is? I'm kinda scared to thinking that it'll pop up a virus or something but I don't think android police would do that. Would they? Anyone try it?

It has been tried. Haykuro uploaded it as an April Fool's joke if I remember correctly. I've downloaded it and it looked to be an 80mb junk file.

Adobe evangelist Ryan Stewart has taunted us before and he is back again with a new YouTube video. In his latest upload, Ryan is showing off the latest version of Flash 10.1 on his Nexus One. Adobe gave all their employees Android phones and we recently learned that Flash 10.1 is tied to the release of FroYo (Android 2.2).
It appears Mr. Stewart is one of the lucky few to be running Android 2.2 on his Nexus One. At the tail end of the video (around 6:30 mark) we get a quick glimpse of his home screen.New desktop elements include an updated launcher, Android tutorial, and new global search box (picture after the jump).
Google is expected to unveil Android 2.2 at this month’s Google I/O.An increasing number of visitors to our site are running the latest FroYo firmware so it appears the update has been finalized. For a list of possible features, check out our Android 2.2 preview.
Update: It appears several Adobe employees are running the FroYo build. It also sounds like the giant FroYo sculpture has arrived at the Googleplex.

It took me a while to post this on my phone, I really hope this was worth the time! Can't wait for Froyo, we are almost there!
That looks really sweet. Froyo is going to be really awesome.
One thing I noticed on that video is that he had landscape orientation facing the wrong way. I don't have a Nexus One yet (look at my sig) but I thought you could only rotate the screen to the left unless you are rooted. I just hope they include a 360 orientation with froyo, that would be sweet.
Amazing!!! The Adobe employee in the video just machined through all those sites. WOW that is a lot of content.
The CBS site was pretty damn awesome. I hope his omission of Hulu isn't because Hulu will block mobile Flash...
Anyway, with Google I/O on the 19th, I was expecting FroYo and Flash 10.1 to leak then. With Adobe employees having access to this already, it should be only days now...
He has atk showing in the notifacation area. lol Good find btw.
i loooovvvee leaks
and best part about this one if it happens, no porting necessary
Re: Looks like Froyo will have a few aesthetic changes. + Is Froyo finalized?

Wow good find there! You are right Froyo needs badly to include a 360* rotation. I can't wait until the 19th!
It seems like quite a lot of what's expected to come with Froyo is already available in ROMs like Cyanogen already. Some times I wish I hadn't unlocked my phone and kept it stock only so that future updates would *feel* much more significant... if you know what I mean.

Oh man you read my mind. This is exactly why I didn't root my phone - I love getting presents that don't unlock my bootloader. Makes em that much more special
If stock can catch up to the functionality of cyanogen (except for su) then it'll probably be a lot more stable and polished, seems like all Google has to do is copy the hard work of the modding community and HTC Sense lol.

+3, once Froyo comes out, I'm going back to a froyo stock image. I rooted just for the trackball alert app. I couldn't stand being in a staring contest with my trackball to see if it blinked or not.
So a phone and web shortcut. sweet. the two things I wanted on all my homescreens so I didn't have to swipe back to the middle one.
1 week to Google I/O, here's hoping for an immediate 2.2 release.
I just read a article today where someone was showing off Flash and Hulu was blocked...then the other site crashed twice.
Ive been defending Flash mostly becuase Jobs is full of ****...but frankly if Flash is a resource hog battery killer or crasher we will never hear the end of it.
Seriously. N1 gets trashed in publications by appholes. I cant imagine if Flash is problematic..the Jobs knob slobbing will be in full force.
Adobe has a bullseye on its chest lets see how they respond.
I wonder how soon the source will be released for cyanogen to do a version
On a side note i'm liking the performance of Flash on the device, yes the video is choppy but that's for obvious reasons
definately the phone shortcut at the bottom is welcome change for me I'm hoping you can change the browser for say messaging/handcent

Why did it take a while from your phone?
That's all I ever use, I forgot about my pc since my nexus came.... anyways 2. 2 looks cool
What I'm hoping is that pressing the phone and browser shortcuts will allow you to choose a default if you have more than one. I suppose it will be a while before the browsers contenders catch up with flash support but I use dialer one to search for contacts with the dialer; to me that is a necessity
So I've been using my phone since early April, and I've found several things wrong with the Android 1.6 operating system. The biggest bug I've found with Android 1.6 is that women don't talk to me. I know if SE updated to 2.2, women would be beating each other up for a trip down my pants. Here's a list of other things 1.6 doesn't do or sucks at.
- Adobe Photo Light (It's not a Flash!) doesn't run on 1.6
- It doesn't butter my toast correctly
- When on a phone call, my ears aren't massaged by sound waves (Android 2.4+)
- It doesn't play the PSP UMDs I tried shoving in it
- Apple won't give me a free case for it
- The phone reboots when I ask Google Maps for directions to the End of the Rainbow
- Playing "The Final Countdown" doesn't result in a magic show by GOB.
- It doesn't drive my car
- The teleporting feature is only in Android 2.5 and higher
- It doesn't (deleted) when I (deleted) [Only in Android 6.9]
If you're as unsatified with your Xperia X10 as I am, your only refuge is to wait for the update to Android 2.1 OS, which many tech blogs believe is actually the Second Coming of Christ.

Hear hear. I'm not insanely excited about 2.1 more than from a naturally curious perspective. Rooted 1.6 works fine for me since wifi tethering was my only major gripe. Froyo on the other hand, that I'm looking forward to. A performance increase in the range of 250-500% depending on the application is a major win.
with android 1.6 ET cant go home
Too bad, you can't be as cool as me, woman see my phone and immediately jumps back. They give off this "omg what a geek" looks whenever i pull my x104 from my backpack. *yes backpack".
Yes you heard it right, i have a X104 ...which is MORE advanced than your little x10! because it is number 104.
It runs on window 7!, touch screen with a 1024 pressure with a wacom digitizer.
It weights 5.2 LBs total. Built it resist to scratch screen and capable to use it under the most bizarre and harizous condition! It also run on LONGER than your little x10...it runs for 8 hours!!!!
What can i do with it when you can't on your x10 ? Here is some list.
- Read porns in bigger screen than x10
- bang on it every night and it won't break after 5 years of uses
- It emit enough heat to warm my body and soul!
- It direct Missles ... use in military purpose sometime.
- who need android when you have window 7!
- brigther screen under the sun!
- can be use as a lethal weapon
- emit so much radiation.

Jello however has become a genericized brand synonymous with gelatins, much like people often refer to all tissues as "kleenex"

Why wouldn't it make sense? Phones and tablets should require different approaches; or do you just want a phone OS to be lazily scaled up to a tablet? Im sure that a lot or most of the elements of honeycomb will be seen on phones but don't expect all. Besides that, its just names and both are made from the same core.

Ah-hem. iOS.
makes sense as it appears that there is going to be separate software for the tablets and the phones, a principal that i agree with. Tougher on dev's i would imagine but better for consumers which in the end with more adoption potentially would be a larger install base

You do realize that iOS is why I said that, right? Who wants another phone OS scaled up to a tablet. It should take advantage of the form factor and hardware.
they need to make a bigger jump. these little jumps from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 to 2.4 are retarded. causes even more defragmentation. Should wait and add more functions and upgrades to it, and release them at least 1-2 years apart. Whats the point of updating the ui without actually making it faster and adding some more functions to it.
Have you tried gingerbread? I get better battery life speed is much improved easily go through a day with heavy use
I can't imagine getting an update every 2 years or even 1 fragmentation ia only occurring because manufactures are to lazy to update and take their time google doesn't have hardware limitations so it can be updated like the g1 it runs froyo well

It's nice to be positive but this is just another step that has been taken lately that brings the likely end to support for "openness"
that's ok google, i'll just stream my dish network service to my phone for a one time fee and be able to watch the same channels i have at home for no additional cost.
I have netflix and hulu i'll be fine. I'm not that much of a movie watcher
Oh puhlease. Like this won't be hacked-in within a week. Hell, Vegas probably has odds on when.
I think you guys are missing the point.
Yeah, there many be alternatives to this specific service, but if this stands up it says that Google is no longer interested in openness.
People have been saying it's the movie companies pressuring Google. My question is why, since rooting alone doesn't mean you can bypass the payment service with Android Market. They'd still get their money.

And as long as I can remove any app I want and have more modifications (say the way cyanogen allows you to)...you and I can agree.

Dont forget notification toggles.
That should be embedded into basic android code.

Common sense should tell people that for the movie industry to agree to provide this service to Android, Google had to agree to this.

Yeah that to! I could care less about overclocking with a dual core phone. I really just want this OS to take off man its been way too long and I think google needs to get in gear; if they don't windows will catch up and grab a huge chunk of the market shares. Im not asking for much but most the features that android is lacking need to be standard, one shouldn't have to root to achieve all these things (the list is long lol). For some strange reason I really feel like when all these wp7 nokia phones come out it will give them a huge jump! Everyone knows Nokia always had ****ty software but hardware is unsurpassed. Honestly, I think google needs to hit android with some more design that uses hardware acceleration or something different from the plain aosp look. Im not talking sense, or other flavors I hate fragmentation, they need to overhaul the design for aosp.

Earlier RootzWiki and AndroidPolice both received leaks from a "extremely reliable source" and they both obtained 2 different pictures of the new Ice Cream Sandwich interface running on the Nexus S.
You can read the whole article here:
http://venturebeat.com/2011/08/11/delicious-android-ice-cream-sandwich-images-leak-online/
Here are the leaks:

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
ICS is also to include:
Brand-new launcher and app drawer, with screenshots of both featured exclusively on RootzWiki - with what appears to be a task switcher icon on the homescreen, though it could be something else.
Camera now has a panorama mode (not pictured)
Gmail has been totally re-themed to go with the new OS (not pictured)
Nexus S will be receiving ICS via update, but the "Nexus Prime" will be getting it first
Mostly UI changes - many older devices (< 1 year old) should be able to run it
Personally, I feel like these are fake. However, the AndroidPolice writers were heavily defending the credibility of their source in the comments section of the original post.
My reasons for being skeptical include:
At Google IO, they announced ICS would get a complete UI overhaul. This is the same basic layout we've been seeing for a long time.
The phone icon is the same as from eclair. A phone icon inside a sqaure, while the newest phone icon in gingerbread is just a phone with no square. Why would google use "new" icons for most of gapps but not the phone?
All the icons are the exact same ones from the Honeybread T-Mobile theme (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gfxandroid.honeybreadtheme&feature=search_result) I'm not sure what the original source of the icons were, but I do know the same icons were "released" way before these leaks.
The signal bar icon is rotated, as is in honeycomb (a tablet thing). The honeybread theme also rotates the signal bar. I don't think google would get rid of the standard bars that's been the same on (as far as I know) every cell phone ever.
To me these just look like a gingerbread build themed with a modified build.prop.
Those are just my 2 cents as of now. There are a couple other things that just don't fit, but then again there are a couple of things that haven't been seen before. I do know that icons can just be used as placeholders when developing and that this is not nearly finished so the final product could (and hopefully) be completely different. What are your opinons?
hmmm... interesting...
why not consider it is still work in progress? at least that is what i would consider it is...
so the same kernel as Gingerbread?
I vote fake as well.

Nexus one will not be having the ice update I guess.. google apps like google video and music and the new android market is so choppy on the nexus one..

I have to disagree. I can't speak for Google video as I don't use it, but Music and the new Market work damn near flawlessly on my device
Not sure of the source of the icons? Have you heard of something called Android 3.0?
Anyway, it looks like the interface is extremely WIP graphics wise, but this definitely seems like the real deal. I just want to know what's going to happen to phones that have softkeys with this release and if ICS phones will have virtual ones as has been speculated.
Also, I feel that the nexus won't be getting an official release of this, especially with the weak GPU.
Fake--
NO real changes, I have blue items in status bar too
That is a Nexus S, this is an N1 thread--
Don't think the N1 could handle ICS--IMHO

Because you're so experienced with ICS and its requirements?
****ty posts like this are why XDA has turned in to what it is.

The N1 thus far has been able to handle everything even better than most phones that have come out in the past year. The custom kernels and oses for the N1 are incredible.

attacking people like this is what makes this place worse...
Everyone can have his own opinion mate....
Anyways am sure whatever changes are coming will mostly be ported out to our lovely N1 via custom roms thanks to the awesome devs around here!
If wp7 can make good use if the adreno 200, I am pretty sure google can make ics work well on the same gpu.

Thanks for the mature post
A better comment would have been telling me why it will and educating me not chastising me. It is only an opinion as pointed in my "IMHO" comment. I for one hope it will as I am only into 6 months of a 2 year contract with TMO. Brought the N1 to TMO from another carrier. I should have said that I didn't think it would work thru a normal OTA, but that with devs like Cyanogen, it may. Also, I don't know if anyone knows how much is being changed and if hardware will come into play. If you already know the source code enlighten us. I am no programmer, just a flasher. If this article is accurate it should work and seems to be little changed to a laymen. But, who knows yet?
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2101386/android-ice-cream-sandwich-leaked
Either way, it is my opinion at some point the N1's hardware or internal memory won't handle the newer OS's. ICS may not be that point yet. Hopefully never. We are running sense roms, thanks to folks like evil etc, but not without issues for a lot of folks. Bad blocks seem to hamper the N1 in some of these roms and the touch screen is not the best.
Another thread with varying opinions, albeit two months old--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137301
Either way I have thick skin and let's hope it works great
Ken
Don't know if these links have been posted before or their accuracy, but they seem to support our HOPE for ICS and talk about Nexus Prime. If this is old news sorry! Two pages.
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/compa..._nexus_one_vs_google_nexus_prime_rumours.html
If that's ics than its atrocious.
This will be the third straight dud out of Google.
I can't fathom "most work we've put into a release" and "total ui overhaul" result in that.
Seriously if that's real might as well hand over the reigns to crapple.
Quick thought,
Where it says android version, instead of sayin ICS shouldnt it say 2.4? To me it looks like somesones just recolored and renamed bits of CM7 I reckon this is fake but i guess we'll just have to wait and see
Good Point
But, maybe they haven't finalized a version number yet. Would think they would have though.
Trying to remember if GB leaks had number or said Gingerbread.

Shouldnt be that hard to track down. Since every single android release has had "leaks". Im sure whoever did this would have done that as well (if it were fake)
Agreed, having ICS means nothing
But, all I remember on pics is 2.3--
or, the GR122 or whatever the number is. It dosen't show on the MIUI rom I am on atm. Think it does on Cyan.
Either way after further research and faith in Cyan, I think we may see ICS on the N1. Unless some new info comes out. It would be nice because GB has reached it's wow factor to me at this time.
