Whats the Best GB Kernel for running stock?

Probably the last one from here, released in March....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26936028&postcount=4
Most of us are on ICS... smoother and better battery life. The Kernals have the emmc brick/bug removed, or you can fully wipe on Abyss 4.2 anyway. Why GB?

I would LOVE ICS, But I have issues with scrolling side to side and up and down. In menus, Apps, Pictures, launchers..
Its not lagging its just acting up, Does the same thing on the AT&T one as well.

The international, But I was just saying I have the same issue with the screen on ICS with both AT&T and N7000

Notecore from the old darkyrom is treating me fine. Easily getting a full day of hardcore use. Doesnt do 240dpi, a shame, but doesnt have any sod's or wake locks..

I was referring as I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE on BOTH of the phones. The International note is my MAIN note, But I was just saying I have the SAME touch screen issue with both

franco.kernel #10 has been working great for me. Can be overclocked with Tegrak as well.
@Arobase40
What's so hard to understand? By "kernel" you can assume the OP means KERNEL. Must you cause an argument in every thread? RE-READ THE OP POST! QUIT CAUSING PROBLEMS IN THIS FORUM!!!

Having owned of both the 7000 and 717... Franco-rom is my pick..... my basic recommendation is if you need stability and dependability stay on GB..... If you are ok with some bugs then ICS is fun but still there are bugs.... in 2 weeks (by 7-12) all the ICS roms will have all the code necessary resolve all the issues everyone is griping about. Tmobile will release their version and it is coming out with ICS, so it stands to reason if one phone has ICS then all the others will access to the issues that are plaguing our leaked ROMs/kernels.
Best Kernel imho is still the Franco..... he is responsive to resolving issues and he has done way more work on the kernel almost anyone one else.
To the others in the thread. Play nice... be respectful... we are here to help each other........ oka1 (moderator)

Best Kernel>Franco and Speed mod(Choose yours)
As far as kernel goes I have been testing a lot of them lately and found out that if you want good scrolling and performance on stock GB you can get speedmod as it provides 804MB RAM for your system and it has no scrolling issues if you are using TOUCHWIZ, but you won't get features like custom boot animation, for that you can choose franco kernel v10 and it works great with franco kernel application.

Eugene OR TeamWhiskey 2.2

So it looks like they both have working 2.2 builds out in the wild now. My question is which one is better, or which one are YOU going to use? Let's try and keep the comparison here, that way we don't clog up both of these wonderful dev's threads.
I have never used either since I'm still stock. What was the general consensus before their new 2.2 builds?
I wouldn't know. They both have a huge following though. What I have noticed is that each one has very loyal followers. It almost seems as if its "either one or the other". But since it is now 2.2, it is a completely different ball game.

Fair question, but somewhat irrelevant in my opinion. My experience with stock vs cooked ROMs (MT3G CM6) is that the only real advantage is better speed. Sure, a few different user-experience changes, but that's all. An the stock ROMs are far more stable.
My stock Vibrant is already plenty fast. I'm rooted and can use root-only apps. My Dolphin browser already displays Flash. JIT will make it technically faster, but will I actually notice..? What would Eugene or TeamWhiskey add to that...?
Have not tried either but am running fusion by team wiskey with there kernel. Phone runs to good to worry about 2.2.

This statement is very inaccurate. When was the last time you installed a bionix rom?
I'm running the 2.2 and it is flawless. 2.2 offers a lot of improvements over 2.1 besides flash. If you don't know what those are then you really shouldn't be giving uninformed information.

Which one looks like stock? Both? I really despise the all black theme I see on the 2.1 Bionix roms. It just looks tacky in some places like the notifications pull down and it's too black. I see Macnut looks kind of like stock.. no screenshots included with either tho. Either way I've downloaded Macnut and I will be installing it ASAP. I'll try the other 2.2 rom next..

2.2 is A VERY BIG update. I dont know about Vibrant, but it should improve battery, it should run faster due to JIT, it has MANY extra features, and its compatible with 2.2 apps (new Gmail, Chrome-to-phone, youtube, flash...etc). move to 2.3 is not that big
that said, i trust TW more then Eugene.
Personally I think it's too soon to be worried about which one is better for general use. I'd give it a little time for each to get some additional polish unless you just enjoy flashing roms all the time every time a new one comes out. Chances are there'll be bug-fixes and tweaks to both in the next few days. Wait for that and more feedback from the early adopters and then decide...
When I got my phone used it had Eugenes rom on it, but I felt Bionix and team Whiskeys roms have been the best roms besides CM.
Put it this way I have only donated to 2 developers, #1 CM and #2 Team Whiskey.

It isn't flawless. Calendar doesn't sync. Holding back results in a FC (new screenshot feature not implemented properly). I've had inconsistency in the market. Don't get me wrong, I'm using it and I like it, but don't throw the word 'flawless' around so easily.
If you remove screencapture.apk that fixes the back button long press fc and you need to install calendar(something).apk to fix sync issues..
It all comes down to personal preference. My experience with Eugene's 2.1 ROMs are that they're TOO skinned. I personally prefer Team Whiskey.
To answer your question about which looks more stock, Team Whiskey hasn't really skinned the Obsidian ROM all that much, so it basically looks like Stock TouchWiz.

there is a fix already for both
I was using Macnut R7 and was about to flash R9 but Team Whiskeys downloaded faster. The major difference between R9 and 7 is, wi fi calling, modem and working gps with some minor tweeks.
If that is true then my comparison won't be too far off.
The biggest difference between the too is that Team W is a near perfect leak of the official 2.2 rom and Eugene's has some mods like built lag fix and a modified version of T.W. which for the most part is better than stock (not perfect but better; in my opinion)
That should really be what makes you choose which one you want.
Secondary things to think about is that, whiskey roms are known for getting official ota's which is nice if you want to get the official with little work, but its still kinda glitchy and slower than Eugenes, but not in a bad way. If you are running stock without a lag fix then you won't notice much. Eugene's rom is highly modded and some stock things won't work like if you still have avatar on your sdcard, and since his is a port there are some remnants of I9000 and cappy things floating around that can throw you off. But it is less glitchy atm and too me looks better. It has a lightly themed Modified TW. But you can get and install that yourself if you want there is a link in the macnut thread.
Hope that helps. I'm Running tw's rom now but I'm going to check out R9.

ICS -v- Task 14 /\ My Review

I have seen a lot of talk lately with people comparing the ICS development ROM's to Task 14.. I have been swapping back and forth almost daily between AOKP #23 and Task 14 Slim so here are my thoughts..
1st of all both are awesome ROM's that offer plusses and minuses depending on what each individual wants and needs.. These observations are based on MY wants and needs so opinions will vary.. The fact that Task 14, a HC 3.2 ROM even gets mentioned / compared to an ICS ROM speaks volumes about how good it is..
Things I like about AOKP #23:
--Browser hardware acceleration
--No screenshot soft key (I loathe that thing)
--ROM Control
--Ability to set # of homescreens
--Swipe to dismiss
Things I like about Task 14:
--Rock solid and stable
--Camera works for video chat
--Just as fast as ICS in many areas and faster in some
--Mini widgets
--Several awesome themes available
The AOKP is actually pretty stable for the most part and Roman and team have done an awesome job on it but remember it's a beta so there is issues and bugs at the time of this posting.. Task 14 is super rock solid and its really only limited by HC 3.2..
I honestly can't decide which I like better.. They both ROCK! I guess that's why I change between them daily..
A few AOKP issues I have is with apps and the screen.. Words with friends is a good example of this.. Also, the screen gets a little glitchy at times when viewing online images.. Nothing major and by no means a put down on AOKP...
I have had zero issues on Task 14 that are not widespread HC 3.2 related..
If you can live without the camera and are willing to experience a few minor bugs here and there then the AOKP may be for you.. If however you want rock solid with zero bugs, a working camera and a system that is just as fast then Task 14 may be for you..
These are MY thoughts and comparison of 2 kick a$$ ROM's... Thoughts and replies are welcome but please don't turn this thread into a pi$$ing match...
You're just asking for a pissing match. I'll just watch... for now...:sly:

I hope not since they are both awesome ROM's...
I've tried ics, very fast and smooth without touchwiz is a godsend. There is only one 3g ics rom so I have not tried romanb's yet. 3g is a big deal to me. Other thing with isc is no proper USB/mass storage support. It does not show all files that I've downloaded from net except whatever files I transferred to tab. Camera is another big issue for me, or lack of. Video does not work also from the rom I tried. Some apps on market not supported also so cant update. That's my summary of isc. HC3.2 on the other hand is improving. I have not tried Task as again no 3g. I'm a big fan of Alterbridge and his Overcome roms. Been using his rom since the original Tab. His latest 2.3.0 soup up with pershoot kernel is more than great for me. ISC is great but for my daily usage, its not ready yet.

Good comparsion between the two. Personally, I use Task14 with b00sted's ICS theme. No ICS can compare to it right now, but once the camera issue is solved, ICS will be boss.
All us Task fans are hoping for a Task ICS ROM soon.
BTW, good thread OP.
A Task ICS ROM will be awesome once it comes.. I'm back on the AOKP for this morning as least..
I think we scared off the ones that would have made this a pissing match. Good.

He is comparing what is available today. The OP is well aware that ICS is in development but he is looking for a daily driver and was looking for others opinions on what we use.
Until ICS is official there is no way to do a 1 for 1 comparison.

Easy you try them both and yes ics is alpha but thats what is available now and is the point of this thread. I came to the same conclusion as the OP after using both kang versions. the arguably incremental improvement in smoothness does not outweigh the full functionality goodness of galaxytask
Adding Visidon even gives me face unlock features and with camera ics+ i get the camera panorama functionality on my galaxy task rom

Even though it is supposed to be alpha (since the Camera mainly does not work and there are also some minor bugs), it is quite stable for daily use as I myself use it and the best part is there are some amazing customisation options ..... literally mind blowing!
Thanks for the review. Still haven't custom rom'd it up yet.
When does the official ics come out?
i have found that the battery in the latest ICS kangs (not the one on XDA as that doesnt get updated! but the one on rootzwiki) is by far lots better than any HC.
So indeed for an alpha release ICS is looking very good compare to an already establish HC rom.
So I can only imagine how good ICS will be when SS releases it...hopefully in April..
bit OT interesting that there are no leaks yet from samfirmware!

[Q] Latest, hottest ROM

I was on Legendary and then SimpleROM but I'm ready for a change as long as it is stable (like the ones I just mentioned). I tried reading the threads but they keep changing and some are very long.
Just wondering if someone knows since I have been on only this 2 ROMs for nearly a year.

Try out CM9.
It's pretty popping fresh.
Also, MIUI.
And in the future, we discourage best ROM threads.
Depends on how you use your phone. CM9 beta 0 is stable for a daily ROM. But If your a power user like on your phone nonstop then you will find yourself wanting a charger.
Also gotta ask the question to you want to move to the MTD side.... best bet is to read up on everything, then test out different roms till you find one that you like.
Sent from a CM9 powered Epic.
If you want a good stable Rom the marcusant rom version3 and the shake and bake theme are a nice combo. Also cm9 is also kinda nice but its still in beta
Threads are long because everyone is trying to butt hurt everyone else, and there are a lot of useless postings (such as this one). Just be sure whatever rom you use has the appropriate thanks, documentation and GPL reference or you will get blasted even as just a user.
Just try them all, go nuts, have fun! Just be sure to do whatever you can to brick your device so you can provide yourself with the logical reasoning to upgrade as quickly as possible.
Sent from my, is it safe to claim, personally semi-tweaked (but not shared) and still therefore kanged??? sammiEpic running some CM9b0 shiznizzle.....
Thanks to all that offered good advise and options.
And to clarify a few points:
1 - I did not ask what was the best ROM (I know better than that).
2 - I respect the advise of the users here and do not wish to try them all. It simply takes too much time when all the ROMs say to wipe everything clean including data. It's a very long process putting everything back the way it was. The last 2 updates I did did not update my programs so I had to install them all manually plus their data. And as some of you may know, restoring from backup is not always a good thing to do.
So... I really appreciate those that provided a few options for me to try. Will do soon. And btw I alway provide feedback to the thread on the ROMs that I try. Comes from being a technology administrator for many years.
Thanks again,
tsp

In order for someone to answer this you have to let people know how you use your phone. Are you hooled on the Touchwiz interface? Then it would require some work and getting similiar apps for CM7, CM9 or any other AOSP ROM. If you just want to update to the newer firmware and like how your phone is running now, then Sleeper or CleanGB. If you need more app space then you want to go to an MTD ROM like CleanGB MTD. At least read the OP's of any ROM you are considering to know all the features.

CM9 ICS
I've been using CM9 ICS since alpha 2 and I had to Odin my phone back to stock for some weird reason. It was so strange seeing the stock interface after using ICS. "I can't swipe notifications away? What is this vertical scrolling? Bloatware???" So yeah, beta 0 seems good enough for me for now, plus the battery life is way better than stock.
CM9 for sure. The only real issue was the phantom voicemail but there is a fix for it now (as of today).
Loving the CM9. It's like a new phone!

Tried CM9 and it was allot more stable than I expected. However it still needs work and is not as solid as stock. The lag overall started to annoy me along with other things like garbled text messaging, 4G issues, occasional reboots, and no visual voicemail, but the devs are doing a great job.
I am on Clean GB right now and will jump back to Thunderhawk when Random updates to El30.

Considering the issues with emmc and stability, I would say that Sammy is not even close to providing a correct ICS rom.
Let them just release the drivers, after all here at XDA we have all the good devs to cook us a good set of kernels for TW or AOSP roms, don't we?
That is just wishful thinking of course;-)
Sent from the great Note
Please make one for ICS.
There's a missing hole in my device, it cries out for SmartAssv2 governor on an optimized kernel. (Frequency is 400Mhz under/1.4GHz over, we don't have the voltage option yet, sigh)
I use this daily (the ones that say current, the saved ones are the original voltages) with abyss kernel 100% stable and I usually set the min speed to 400MHz and Max to 1400MHz or 1700MHz depending on my needs.
I can lower all voltages by 0.025v but then I'll get a couple crashes a week so i prefer to keep the voltages just one step higher.

I agree. We really need some good ICS metals. Apart from the CM9 kernel and DAFUQ, I do not see anything else here.
And after Entropy's warning not to flash leaked kernels, I am beginning to wonder if there is some other good kernel for ICS ROMs.
We would be grateful if make this an ICS kernel. We can live with one less good GB kernel /methinks

Does chinese leaks we must forget. Nothing wrong with thise kernels if you have a chinese Note. Look at sgs2 forum. Already samsung released there the sources and there are 5 ore more custom kernels. So samsung is doing a great job for them releasing so soon sources. We have to be patient and not start making cm9 with sources from sgs2. So stupid.

True but SGS2 sales are at least four times more than that if the note. The note is like a flagship device but its not getting the best treatment yet. We can't expect the sources to be out before the official ICS release.
I am just happy we even have official CM9 support. The problem though, is because DAFUQ supports only TW ROMs :-| and we have no good kernels (except leak ones) for the AOSP/AOKP ROMs.
So much good ROM development here for AOSP. Yet, no real safe kernels for em yet. Pity!
He's back! Another robertberma anti-spirit comment.
Excuse me for the intro, but most of the work here at XDA started with hacking and making open sourced stuff out of closed source material.
Indeed we already have a few good GB kernels, and an additional developer on ICS would be greatly appreciated. ICS is coming soon, and considering the time spent on tuning a kernel, I think that it would be more productive to start working on an ICS kernel than on GB.
However if this GB kernel is a first step to get knowledge of the Note specifics and followed by an ICS one, it's all good.

Forgive me if this question is really nooby.
Is it possible for a custom ICS kernel to support both TW and AOSP? Are their frameworks too different?
Most (or maybe all) of the GB kernels I see here are for GB. They may be themed but I still see the TW framework everywhere.
If possible, wouldnt it be nice to make a kernel that supports both?

Hahaha I think it will not help developing ics kernel by develop a gb kernel. I just say we have to be patient and wait for sourses to continue develop a ics kernel that is save. We have great devs for aosp and cm9 roms but there hands are tied behind there backs without sourses. Now they use stupid chinese **** thats not save. We getting of topic here.
Make this gb kernel fast and i hope he continue his work when ics comes out. And make a speedy ics kernel for sammy, aosp and cm9 roms. ONE KERNEL FOR ALL ROMS.

I hase™ a quastion™ too! Where have you been dude?
Back to topic: The need for kernels are so relative to the users that need it.
Variety truly is nice.

Im looking for ONE version of a ROM to flash, and not have to flash updates after

Friend has been using the i9000, and I have the latest RC of cm7 on it.
She says that once in a while the phone will either reboot, or the screen goes dim and becomes unresponsive and she has to pull the battery.
I will be letting her have the phone as a gift but I want to flash a rom on there that is just rock solid (dont care about features). Just SOLID/stable as she doesnt know to flash any updates and I wont be flashing any more updates to it.
I was thinking about just putting on the latest nightly of cm7 but I dont see any changelogs for it to see what was fixed between the RC and nightly.
I was also thinking about Gamerzrom.
any more suggestions?
I'm running TiramiSlim 2.0 ICS, based on Slim ICS,with Devil Kernel, for a couple of weeks now,
smooth, stable, good battery and no issues
use cyanogenmod 9 RC2. Bug free basically. As for the freezing, are you using stock kernel? Cause it may be a hardware error. My friends phone had it after ics upgrade and all i had to do to fix it was install a custom kernel and bump up the voltages for the 100 and 200mhz frequencies by 25 - 50mV.
Flash her a stock rom, no rooting or fiddling.

Why not?
They say it's good, isn't it?
And maybe in few days she will be able to update to Jelly Bean automatically from Samsung servers.

No it won't there is no ICS for our phone, just go for AOKP M6 don't look any where else
ok so I've been suggested so far:
tiramislim with devil kernel
cm 9 RC2
aokp m6 (probably the one i've heard least about)
and a stock rom (I thought custom roms are supposed to remove bugs?)
to answer your question, yes it is on the default CM7 kernel
Yep.Custom roms always faster than stock ones. But if we are talking about bugs,hmm.. i dunno..Stock must be better at that.
If your friend is not using her phone too much,i mean just making calls and sms also music etc, flash stock rom and give ut as it is.No need to root.. Pure stock.
I suggest you to flash 2.3.4 JVQ.Then change CSC by typing
*#272*imeinumber# to XEU
Get latest open europe stock firnware from kies. With that she can get latest updates easily.

Decide whether you want to put ICS or GB on it before asking for suggestions I reckon.
DMORE 3.5 is a rock solid GB ROM with awesome features. If I didn't have jelly bean hunger, I'd be using that.

Its doesnt matter whether its GB or ICS, thats is why I am here, asking for THE MOST solid release of a rom in general
Had Dmore before cm7. found cm7 has less bugs
I'm gonna give a second vote for CM9 RC2. Before jumping to Jellybean, I used the CM9 nightly builds with the semaphore kernel. For me it was always rock solid, and still blazing fast. No bugs. Cheers!
I didnt think cm9 was this popular and considered so stable yet
ICS Elite 1.4.1, it's very fast, stable and bug free. It is also the final version of the rom so there will be no more updates anyway.

Flash latest stock rom of your country.. Flash a kernel with root, i prefer a kernel what is almost stock, for example;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332412&highlight=root
(make a factory reset)
Then install titanium to delete unnesecerry apps/bloatware
Install adfree adroid
Instals fasterfix en set the gps setting to your country/region
And you will get a really rockkk solid phone
(sorry for bad english)

You are the second person who has said that stock and not a custom rom will make it more solid.
Why is this? Don't custom roms generally perform better in most aspects? less bugs, etc

without intending to offend all girls on xda (who probably DO care about tech stuff - which is why they are here), sadly most if the girls I know are more concerned about the colour of the phone than which rom it has.
So, if said girl is fitting my terrible stereotype, then you'd be better off asking her which is her favourite colour and picking a suitably themed rom of the right colour! (as long as it is stable enough).
For all girls who DO care about tech: I apologise for perpetuating such offensive sexist rubbish! I SALUTE you!

Slim ICS for me after gamerz rom (last release often hangs for me each time I load too much things in App) and Darky (ok but got quickly crowded by apps and started to lag).
The slim roms allows you to have good battery and small memory footprint, then you add apps to it. Since a week, it's rock solid, I got half day extra in battery life too with my usage (mix of movie/media/3G surfing during 30 minutes commute each way + 20/30 min daily calls)
