Money is burning a hole in my pocket and just want to confirm that it can be hacked to do standard voice calls.
Can anyone confirm that this is doable?
good luck.......
Can you install Google Voice and use your Google phone number on it?

Nimbuzz seems to work quite well for outgoing calls. Haven't tried incoming.
Tango works for incoming and outgoing but requires the Tango apps to be installed on the device being called. It's available for the Android, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
Both are free, in the Android Market and work over 3G / WiFi.
delete this post pls. didnt read the topic well
Asia (Taiwan) purchased version has full phone features. Don't know if I need to use my N1 on a daily basis now. Tab does (ALMOST) everything.
Before I buy galaxy tab, can you use Yahoo messenger or skype to do video chatting?
I am always spending my time talking to my family on weekend talking using video conference using yahoo messenger and skype on my laptop
I normally ignore this but for the sake of this forum, do u know how to search?
If u dunno, u should take at least 5 min to view few paged as this question was repeated few days ago

Here I will answer it. You can video chat w/ yahoo from the tab to any other mobile device and to a windows pc. It will not work w/ a Mac yet.
Thanks for the replied, now I'l buy this tab next weekend. BTW is the cam quality good on video chatting?
I am still looking for an app that will do a video chat between my Tab and a PC.
I've tried Yahoo, Skype, oovoo and 2 others that I can't remember off the top of my head... NONE of them work.

Not for sure why yahoo didn't work cause I used a Mac w/ a windows vm installed and the video chat worked just fine between the tab and the computer. Did you install the video plugin for yahoo.

To legally use skype you have to have verizon network (can someone fact-check that?) or the app won't install.
The front camera of the tab is 1.3 mega pixels. It is adequate for the task. There is some microphone button issue - you use it like a walkie talkie, or art last you have to remember to push it sometimes. Can you please post back here your results?
I wouldn't see why skype would just limit themselves to vzw network. I will try and install skype tomorrow on my sprint tab.

I was mistaken - I downloaded skype from the market, and installed, then set up an account. But it only calls over wifi, not 3g. And you have to pay. I want to learn about voip.
That is because skype has not released a version w/ video chat for android.

Those of us with non-stock roms don't have Qik.
Tango in the market works great. My friend installed it on his ipod touch and we were able to have a video conference without issue. I was on 3G he was on wifi.

FYI - Skype calls work fine over 3G on a Euro Tab on Euro networks. If it is not working over 3G for you it is probably being blocked by your carrier.
O/T though as Skype doesn't support video calling on Android as yet.

Dave
..going back to the title of the thread, where the heck is video chatting?I installed the latest YM and the imVideo plugins but the video chat option is nowhere to be found. Apparently you can make a Video call (i tried it, it used the rear facing camera, was able to "connect" (i got this call timer thing go up) but then neither of us could hear anything over the line. This was thru 3G by the way, calling a PC.
Where indeed is video chat?
Video calling between tab and pc is working via oovoo. Install the latest oovoo for your pc and the oovoo app from the market. The screen orientation has been fixed.

I use oovoo and it has worked the best. Ive tried as many apps I could find. Oovoo works from app to app, app to pc, android to iphone, all for free unless you want to do conference calls; then you need to pay. 1 to 1 is free.

Nope! Oovoo doesn't work correctly. The orientation of the forward facing cam is 90 degrees out and there's no config to reorient it.
Short answer is Yahoo Messenger works, like crap. Oovoo works as well, with issues.. All of the other video chat (handset->pc and handset->handset) programs I've used suck, wifi, 4g no matter. I've tried on my HTC EVO, MyTouch4g and Galaxy Tab with most of the free ones available. Qik's quality is not very good at all but it tends to work between tablet and phone.
The galaxy tab's front facing camera is nice and clear though for it's purposes. You will probably find yourself in better luck using your headset as well.
Also, i'm not really sure if it was installed with cm7 or not but the t-mobile version of Qik is installed on the mytouch4g, seems to work as well as it did with the stock rom.
I want to use google's built in phone application for voip (sip). I know there are sip applications in the market but on a previous tablet I found they had poor sound quality and wanted to try it with the built in one. Is there a way to enable this similar to the camera app for nexus 7? Or a hidden way of running it?
I've been using groove IP with my gvoice number works pretty good especially with my Bluetooth headphones.

Hey guys. Was curious if its possible to use the mic. For chat purposes while in google talk. I dont see it as an option in gmail or google + either. I only see the option of doing audio chat which is not what i need.
Thanks.

Yes, Google Talk has the mic and video w/ mic options. I just got off mine using the vid chat, checking to make sure they worked so I could answer your question. As a matter of fact, the video is excellent over wifi!!

I use Google Voice and Groove IP (paid) for my calls. Works like a champ too. :good:
With the paid version of Groove IP on my tablet, I can connect via wireless tether to my phone and use my 3g to make calls from my tablet. Of course I can connect via wifi to make calls too. :good:
Sorry I guess I didnt explain myself properly enough. I don't want to do an audio chat, THAT is the option they give you in gmail. I want to be able to speak instead of typing like I can do on my phone. If i can speak into the mic. for google apps and what not I dont see why i cant do the same thing in gmail but i dont see the option. And i dont see an option for the Mic. on the keyboards as well. Hope I did a better job of explaining myself. :cyclops:

When I compose a new Gmail, when the keyboard pops up, pressing the mic button allows me to do what I believe you are describing.
I use SwiftKey.

it was actually google talk as well. I see what the problem was. The stock asus keyboard doesnt give you the microphone option which is stupid. As soon as I switched to the android keyboard i got the microphone on the keyboard so im all good now thanks.
When I use the Waze app, I like to use voice commands to make reports of Hazards and things that I see while driving. Unfortunately comma many times when I use voice input it thinks it can't hear me when it is clearly responding to sound and seems to act like it is opening to voice prompts at the same time that overlap each other. Anyone else using this app have this difficulty on the Nexus 6 p? I don't know if it's this phone or the application. So far no response from the Developers. Other apps where I use voice input such as texting and creating this post seem to work just fine.
