Hi, i hope the answer to this is not anywhere else. I cannot recover my nook simple touch (glowlight). Here is what i did
1) I tried to root the device with this guide (not knowing that this is not for glowlight version)
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting
-> the process stopped at the instructions page and i rebooted
-> after that the device did this endless loop where i think it reboots during the moving dots
2) When i found out that i should have used this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706
I followed that procedure as well but the device did not boot as it should after the installation of glownooter-1-5-26.zip
3) Then i found the guide to do the 8x reboot recover which did not work (or I did something wrong)
4) as everything failed I tried the reboot recover from CVM framework which resulted in a page saying: install failed
So my question is: is there a way to still recover my device? what can i do? if i missed some inportant info, plz ask.
Thx for any help
greets cloud

I'm in a similar situation with a bricked nook glow that won't get past "install failed" screen. Tried both methods described in the page you linked, but neither worked.
Is there anything else that can be done to revive the device? I tried almost every method I could find in the forums....
TIA
no glowlight

You should have done some reading first. A500 has an encrypted bootloader that needs a custom recovery partition installing before flashing any Roms.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209988 and read, read, read.
hi,
thx for your message,
doesn t seemss that in the link you gave me there is an unbrick tutorial.

I have a nook simple touch (not the glowlight version) with the firmware version 1.2.0. I tried to root it with touchnooter but got stuck in the bootup screen. I was therefore wondering if anyone have a way to root 1.2.0, since the only thread i have seen that dealt with this was for the glowlight version, and i'm not sure if the same methods work for both versions.
Boot from the noogie disk.
Make a backup - the file should be about 2 gig.
Test a restore - you should be able to restore to a 2gig or larger medium (sdcards work well for testing) and get 8 parititions.
Once you've got a working, viable backup, you're ready to modify. There is no universal factory restore disk, hence the note of caution.
That said, tinynoot should work on the 1.2 devices - it works on both the NST and NSTG and with a very minor change, on the Nook color as well.
It gives you root and not much else - no Android market and the Amazon appstore is apparently a challenge with non-US releases of the device.

Same problem here. (NST fw 1.2)
Touchnooter and MinimalNooter causes Nook to hang at boot.
EDIT: I just checked the procedure on 2 nooks. One from US and one from GB.
On GB nook rooting works fine. (factory recovery image 1.2)
On US it hangs at boot. (factory recovery image 1.1)

I haven't used TinyNoot, only Touchnooter and MinimalNooter (CWM).
Tonight I'll try 'tinynoot' and post result as an 'edit' to this message.
Rooting US version of NST 1.2 with GlowNooter-1.5.26 ?
This post suggested that GlowNooter can be used to root US version of NST 1.2.
Has anyone succeeded with this path?
I will be following this thread, I just got a nook today and would love to root it so I can sideload mango on it.
eventually 'tinynoot' worked for me.
Glow nooter stopped at 'Read Forever '.
If your nook is already rooted 'tinynoot' won't work either.
You have to apply 'tinynoot' to a clean (unrooted) nook (after recovery to factory image (6x reboot) and manual update to fw 1.2)

I assume that a previously rooted 1.1.x NST following an (OTA or manual) upgrade to 1.2 would become un-root & "clean" in the process and hence can use tinynoot?

Yes, you lose 'root' (su) but all apk's stored in '/data/app/' remain untouched.
I had to perform a full recovery because installing 1.1 with CWR does not remove all of the packages/files introduced with '"not working" Nooters'.
Another option to clean up the system (other than recovery) is to wipe out '/system' partition using CWR and than install FW 1.1 from CWR (nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip). Then 1.2 and then 'Tinynoot 1 + 2'.
Hi folks, I recently bought a Nook ST 1.2.0 and easily got it rooted with Tiny Noot.
My problem now is, how do I install new apps? Say I've got an APK file, what do I do with it? I tried putting one on a SD card and putting it in the Nook, but there doesn't seem to be a file explorer installed with Tiny Noot so I can't browse to it and install it any way. I'm in the UK so the Amazon App Store doesn't work.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Matt.

I believe you can install apps using adb push.
What I don't know is how one goes about finding and determining apps that are compatible with 1.2. Perhaps one approach is to start with apps that are included/packaged with other NST rooting tools such as Minimal-Touch.
Seems like you guys finally have the software we have in the UK. Please refer to my thread for all I know at the moment. This includes a few guides to get started. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961835

Just confirming I've seen similar on a US nook simple touch. Factory firmware image is 1.1.
touchnooter 2.1.31 with the 1.1 version installs, but the nook gets stuck in a boot loop on restart.
then did a factory image / reset and upgraded manually to the 1.2 version
In this case, touchnooter boots but never reaches the black screen flash. An attempt to restart the nook then results in a hang in the 'read forever' screen - not surprised, since I dont think touchnooter was successful.

Tinynoot works to root Nook with firmware 1.2 (I have a glowlight version)
to allow non market apps on nook - use Nook Color Tools - check the box to allow non market apps.
use adb to install apps to your device.
So I have a Nook Simple Touch tablet. My dad tried to root it but either bricked it or something else. It is flashing at where it says "Nook by Barnes & Noble" and it keeps flashing between the first two dots of the five and does that non stop. If somebody could tell me what that means and how I can fix it in Lame Mans terms because this is my first experience with a Nook. Thank You

The easiest way?
Use method 2.
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock
This will format your nook and restore it to stock image. All data will be lost but your nook should get better.
After the procedure check what firmware version you have installed and if it's not 1.2.1 upgrade it using instructions on B&N site.
Thanks I will try this when I get home.
I rooted my Nook (1.2.0) with NookManager and played a bit, but dont think it is worth it for me. So I tried to restore the back-up I had, but it was corrupted, and could not restore... De-registering the device reverted to stock software, but it is still rooted, I suppose. I got twice a message that installation failed. I suppose this is the 1.2.1 update, but since the device is rooted, the update fails.
So, I would like to help me with a link how to restore to stock, unrooted state and software version 1.20 or higher.

Hi,
This is my first time trying to root a tablet but managed to unlock the bootloader and install magisk + Edxposed, but was unable to find a module that enabled exfat for the sd card.
Currently it only reads Fat32 formatted cards but I would like to load a 10gb file on there that the device can read.
Any ideas how to go about this? will flashing a custom kernel/ rom help me with this?
All help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I believe you'd need something like vold-posix, along with a version of magisk modified to inject it
But vold-posix is for Android 8.1, although I believe there is a modified 9 build for Pixels.
I'm not even sure if anyone has gotten any custom roms working on any of these yet, but if they have, might be your only option.
Thanks!
As of now I think I bricked it....
I messed around and accidentally erased the system partition, tried to fix it by flashing the image posted here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/wa...eral/stock-stock-backups-images-otas-t3998227) and now the screen won't turn on, no recovery mode, no adb..... the device is still detected through the SP flash tools though.
I think the image I used wasn't complete - can anyone upload a complete working image (including a scatter file) I don't care if it's stock or custom, just need something working on the device.
Thanks all!

Is it still detected by the computer? That's really all you need to flash the ROM. I would be careful not to overwrite or format the unit-specific data on the emmc, like nvram, proinfo, persist, etc. I hope those did not get corrupted on your device.

Is your computer still detecting it? What specific errors is SFFT giving you? Did you follow the guide HERE?
Appreciate all the help here! I did follow that guide but I believe I messed up when I deleted the internal storage so the flashing did not work...
Either way I have another one to play with as these were super cheap on black friday - does anyone have any ideas for my original question?
I don't mind flashing a custom rom if anyone knows of one that works with this device.
@rachelld, I don't understand what you mean by "deleted the internal storage" (I don't think you can delete the emmc chip ), but these tablets are basically unbrickable as long as you have a backup or at least the device-specific areas remain in the ROM. There is also no secure boot to speak of.
@diplomatic Have no idea what I did but at one point I did hit a Chinese screen and clicked clear Emmc now that you mention it... (At least that's what Google translate told me it meant....)
I am left with a device that won't turn on at all, sp flash tools claims that it flashed successfully but still no response from the power button

Well no, if you did erase the emmc, then the stock Rom backups shared will not have enough data for you to fully restore from.
And it is not know what partitions can be shared between devices. For example. Secro has device specific data on it. Nvram , also.
So if you have multiple devices. Follow the wwr readback process and fully read back all the partitions from one that works. And flash it back to the bricked one.

That's the factory mode, the clear eMMC option should just be another factory reset option.
