Okay xda, here's a hypothetical situation I'm considering:
I'm running damagecontrol 2.08.1, and I know the official 2.1 is out now. However, I hear mixed reviews. I'd much rather be running the official update, but at the same time not too sure I want to lose root. It'd be good to hop off the root train to avoid pains like this, but then I'll be impatient when Froyo comes around I suppose. Anyways, I was wondering if it were at all possible to:
1.) Backup via Nandroid my system running 2.08.1 rooted.
2.) Update to the official non-rooted 2.1
3.) Test it out, and if I don't like it, restore to my 2.08.1 rooted via Nandroid, and have root access again.
Can anyone confirm whether or not this would work? Also for those that updated, what are your thoughts on Root-vs-Non?
You figure out how to run a nandroid backup without root, after running the Sprint RUU, and you will make 27 people on this forum VERY Happy.
not me, I was smart and didn't load it...or at least i didn't "take one for the team"

This will not work, If you upgrade to 2.1 using official Ruu, You will lose root, and it will wipe the custom recovery image, so no more flashing anything, no more root, until someone finds the clink in the htc armour to regain root

I see, so that recovery menu isn't stock android recovery? Well then here's another question.
If you could get flash-rec on an unrooted phone through the ASTRO install method, could you flash a custom recovery image like 1.6.2, then do a nandroid restore from backup?
I probably sound like a mega-noob, just wanting to know why we can't do these things.
Nah, I "took one for the team" but am actually working on it. I DO have to say that the official 2.1 is DAMN fast though. Like, faster then pancacke 0.1 hehe
No but seriously, there is almost 0 lag, and the only thing that I have seen wrong is all of the apps in the app drawer
And no, the nandroid thing is NOT possible.
Hmm, thanks regaw for the answer. Is it fast enough to make waiting for a 2.1 rooted unnecessary right now? Cause damage hasn't logged in for ages, and I'm tired of all the force closes and errors I'm getting. I'm just not so sure it's worth upgrading when I may have to wait longer if I update to an unrooted. I mean, I have A2SD, DConfig, all those shenanigans that make the phone so much better. What's your take?

Well, If you would like to do anything other than what Sprint/HTC wants you to do, I would recommend NOT upgrading, but waiting for something to come out. I know that Damageless is really busy, but I know that trevE is working on things too. They just need to finalize some stuff to get it out. While official 2.1 is fast, it doesn't have a whole bunch of things that us on custom ROMs take for granted. This is my first time on an official ROM since January, and, I do not want to keep it on for long, 1) just so I can begin developing again... and 2) so I can figure out the method of getting root back for everyone who ran the RUU.

Just some stuff I have looked at doing, but I am not willing to jump ship on a rooted phone.
you know I have been back and forth on whether or not to go with the official release and lose root, but during that process I loaded up Pure Hero rom which is based off the alysious (sp?) Rom but with Sense removed and man is it fast.
I have no need to lose root and this little phone is very speedy. And yes, I have tried Damage and Fresh (and a few variation based on those two) roms. Although they are decent roms, they just and turtles when compared to Pure Hero.
As far as Sense goes, I did like Sense, if you want it then do the alysious (again sp?) rom. Just that I think removing sense speeds it up, and honestly you can get all those functions through apps.

Good stuff, thanks. I've been longing to root this phone, but I refuse to do it without a factory .zip which I can flash to restore defaults. Too many people have various issues after rooting, just don't want to take that chance. Can't wait to see what CM puts out though.
what issues? You make a nandroid to go back to

Make a nandroid backup.
So to clarify, if I do the following ...
1) factory reset
2) unlock bootloader
3) root phone
4) make nandroid backup
I can then restore the nandroid backup at any time and phone will be completely stock, recovery, bootloader and all exactly as it is now with no sign of modding whatsoever?
I haven't had a lot of time to read into this so not sure as yet what's involved in the above steps but in a nutshell am I on the right lines? Theres a lot of confusing (and conflicting) info out there!
Thanks.

?? You can already tether on stock. Also, I haven't heard of anyone having problems just from rooting the phone, in fact, all you're really doing is unlocking the bootloader and installing an apps to give you su permissions. Like the others said, you can always nandroid back to stock and relock the bootloader if you want to.
The major things wrong with the CM7 alpha on the NS are the Camera and Wifi and other things you would consider major

guys come on. This is a dev phone. This is what Nexus is about. Why not flash? Cyanogen is the most consistant and top quality Roms. I love the stock just as much as the next guy, but I didn't buy this phone to be boring. Just flashed CM7 and all is good. updates should make it even better!! Let the fun begin!!

I'm all for that sure but not until I have a simple and sure fire way of returning absolutely everything to stock, out of the box condition.
Im personally waiting for Amon_RA to release his NS recovery
and ya, the whole not having a sure fire way to go back to stock is a downer.
Google needs to release the stock ROM in its entirety
I'm sure they'll do that soon... or at least I hope they will. Only then will the fun begin for me!
Just wondering, why do you guys need a surefire way to return to stock? Just reflash stock rom and relock bootloader.

Is it really that simple though? My understanding is that the only available 'stock' rom is not in fact stock, rather its an adapted rom as Google have yet to release the actual one?
I want to be able to return to normal in case I want to return the phone.

you cant reflash the stock recovery over CWM either....so when they release the stock ROM officially all you would have to do is re lock the bootloader and flash the rom and it will overwrite EVERYTHING
i was a hardcore CM user on my N1 , flashed nightlies every day but i just dont see anything in CM for the NS that would make me jump right into an alpha

As easy as hacking psp, but then i broke the unwritten rule, i let my phone update a month ago (it said 2.2....so) which took me from the what seemed easy process of rooting a phone at 2.1 to the hard one of 2.1 update1...
downgrading back to 2.1 seemed liked a plan right cause
Code:
unrevoked.com/m
that should work then... i think and its seems almost to easy, but i just cant wrap man head around downgrading.......
I also found a easy way of doing it with the radio but my baseband version is also to high (at least from what Ive read 2 42 02 10 29)
All the stickys ive found seem to be out of date, and thats seems the case every where, i was going to use my update to get a evo instead, being new if i dont let it update it should be easy to root, but i hear after 1/30 you got to pay more, i not sure if thats counts if i activate the phone before that date tho...
so now im stuck and asking for help, somewhere to start would be mucho great. ty in advance.
Ummm......I'm lost here brother. The tutorials here work, even for the lastest update. I just did another one yesterday for a friend. Which one's have you tried?
Well see i honesly havent tried much, just been doing my homework trying to see what works, what dont, if you say these tuts are on point ill start puting everything ive gathered together and start, ill use this topic if i encounter any problems.
just alot to take in, all in one night new terms and all that...

says if i dont have 2.27.651.5 in his case 2.27.651.6 (i have 2 32 651 2) i need to downgrade with the ruu the thread provides, since it dosent mention my build number, im unsure if it matters, going to download ruu as i dont see how it will hurt so.
any advice?
Run the "One click root apk" in the themes and apps forum. Not the universal root cause that gives people problems.
One click root apk will root whatever sprint update your on. Its super easy

Edit: so really the only reason i did this was for the wireless tether, my phone is the only internet i have so i hope it was worth it... but what else can/ should i do with it.... im unsur, can i get true android 2.2, and roms they what an OS, and whats froyo? kinda in over man head lol but i keep getting myself deeper...
well i will reccomend AOSP 0.9.8 it is very good rom....fast and stable...
make yourself a nand back up(you can use Rom manager from the market) wipe...flash and you are ready...
if you dont like it..you got the back up....so you can restore whatever you are running now....

told you it was super easy, your welcome. You can hit the thanks button if you want
as far as roms yes you want a custom one. yes you can get 2.2, it comes in two flavors, CM6 and AOSP. CM6 allows for lots of customizing. AOSP is the fastest rom you can download for this phone right now with everything working. Personally I would recommend AOSP. If you want to switch later you can(you probably will cause everyone does, its an addiction.)
you need to flash a custom recovery to do custom roms. easiest way to do that is download Rom manager from the market and use it to flash the clockwork mod recovery.
and Froyo is 2.2, Gingerbread is 2.3, and Eclair is 2.1.

I just used z4root to root my Hero and it worked fine using the newest version (1.3 I believe) and the Permanent Root option. The only hiccup that I ran into is that z4root seemed to have gotten stuck on the "Rebooting" screen. I had let it run for about 20 min and hit the Home button then went to applications and found that SuperUser was installed and the phone is actually rooted. Been able to install ROM Manager and use Titanium Backup to remove a bunch of the Sprint and HTC apps.
Hello guys, So I got my phone about a week ago. Bought it used cause didnt wanna shell so much to find the price of it drop down to a 1/4 of it by the end of the year. Anyways, so I have searched the internet left and right for my problems and am a few hours away from being hospitalized lol. First I had to learn so much about the andriod os itself. Then there are versions with their unique names. Then there is rooting and all the ROMS out there. I am in the IT industry, just not on the development side of it and boy oh boy, did I have my hands full. I cant even imagine to think what your avg joe would go thorugh but then the avg joe buys it to surf the web and make calls only lol. Anyways, Im gonna list the problems and will appreciate any help but the driod gurus here.
So the whole time im thinking ok when I buy the phone im going Froyo. When I get the phone it already has it. Im scratching my head thinking, the guy he said he did no updates, its only rooted, how in the world does it have froyo?!?! Then I found out that the later version actually came with froyo from the factory. Ok so then I wanted it unlocked. Well to have it unlocked, you need to have apps, right? Theres no friggin app store on the damn thing!! Im thinking ok lemme do a fresh reset of the phone and it should be back, well that didnt help. Did more research and the guys said that maybe its there, just no icon so try searching on the phone. Well theres nothing there. Then I found out a million others crying over the same issue but theres like no solution that really worked for the majority (at least i didnt come across one). So i thought, you know what, im gonna just post it here and see what responses I get. So help me out guys, how do i go about this?
I guess you can use odin to go back to STOCK JFD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13132341#post13132341
Guess you have to skip step 1 though.
I would use odin to go back to the old factory firmware. Then if you want you can use kies to upgrade back to 2.2, or you can root and use a custom rom. I can't begin to tell you how much better this phone is running a custom rom.
Go to settings then list the version and kernel in the 'about' tab. This should tell how much your phone is modded. Also just in case you didn't know, the app store in Android is called market because app store is trade marked by apple.

Not exactly sure what you are asking. Are you trying to reinstall the market app? Are you trying to root the phone? If you just got the phone and have nothing to lose in terms of information, then Odin back to stock 2.1 and then root the phone again and everything should be there. Directions for Odin are on the Team Whiskey website in Shorty's Locker along with the files you will need to accomplish this. READ the directions carefully and you should be fine and forget about reinstalling Froyo. Froyo changed recovery from 2e to 3e which affected Clockwork Mod. If you flash back to 2.1 and reroot you will be able to install custom ROM's, Kernels and Themes without difficulty.
Steps to use:
Get Odin 1.7 or 1.8
Get the USB Samsung Drivers for your PC. NOT STOCK WINDOWS DRIVERS
Download T959UVJFD - This is your baseband
Download 512.pit file - Drive partition
Read the tutorials on Odin and run the restore. You will be back to 2.1 eclair.
Then root the phone again. I use SuperOneClickv1.7 and it works fine.
Not a problem, it just so happens that I have the Market.apk and as long as its rooted (and sounds as if it is) then you should have no problem installing. I got this apk from the forums here on XDA a couple of months ago and it should still work flawlessly, hope I was able to help and good luck!
use odin to back to eclair and re root everything should work

Yeah I guess I should have explained further, you need to place the file on the phone so if I understand correctly you downloaded it str8 to the phone. As previously stated by madguitarist63 go to my files and check to see if the apk is there. The file should not be zipped, XDA does that and when its downloaded it should be in its raw form which is the apk. All you should need to do is select it and it will show you or ask you if you want to install. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help Im more than happy to assist.

I probably should have waited until I I know more about it but I just got caught up in the moment a few weeks ago when someone else had done it and they said it was easy so I took the bait. Now I am going to give the phone to a family member and to avoid having any issues with the phone I want to unroot and do a reset so the phone is set to factory so they may set it up to their liking so how can I unroot? I was told that since I did not install a rom then I could do a factory reset and it would set everything back to stock so can someone advise me on this? If it can't be done that way is there a unroot abvailable?
First thing. This should have been posted in the Q&A section. Second thing. Go to the link provided. Follow the instructions and download the stock MDC.TAR file. Use Odin to flash and you'll be back to stock. No root!
