[REQUEST] App2SD for the S3 - Galaxy S III General

Hello, Ive noticed that there's no option to move apps to the SD card with my S3, as there was for the S2. Ive filled my 16gb already, and I bought a 64gb card, hoping to be able to have many of my apps on the SD card, however it seems that this is not possible at the moment.
Are there any plans to resolve this problem? Would this be resolved in the form of a kernel, rom or tweak? Or is it a hardware limitation of the S3 which restricts the application's location?
Thanks

someone said in another thread that you can do it natively on the s3
dunno though

I'm gonna ride with Chainfire on this one, too many GS3 owners saying you can't. But I guess I'll find out for myself once I get it in my hands.

If you are wise, just move your user files to the 64 .gb .sd card. There is already 11.gb of space for apps and still people need to move their apps to external .sd
tapatalked from galaxy s3

try link2sd . It will definately work .

Can anybody confirm this? I won't be able to until the 21st at the earliest

I'd like to know as well. What concerns me more is the game data since those are going to be larger files rather than the app itself. ie gameloft games. Are the game data stored in the internal or micro sd card when game data is downloaded?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2

On my acer with 8gb internal storage I used an app called GL to SD but you alway need to run it first and run the games within it. And although that allows game data to be stored in micro sd it doesn't always work for me and sometimes I forget to run it first. I think the best solution for me is the get the 32 fb model.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2

So, according to that article, CM has the problem patched? I have nothing on my internal storage apart from apps, yet its full, nice.

If you installed a lot games with large game data, try GL to SD, that app will store game data (not apps) to your sd. ROOT required. Open GL to SD then run the game you want and it will redownload data but to your sd card. You have to open the game this way everytime though GL to SD so the game knows to use the game data from the card. You can delete the game data in the internal since that won't get used anymore. Should give you a lot more room than app2sd.
You can also move manually the original game data in internal to the sdcard but I don't recall where to move it too. I think under games.

App2Sd, Link2Sd and GL to SD aren't working, and I'm seriously not liking Samsung and Google lately with all these Apple-esque restrictions that's been going on ICS lately.

Been using GL to SD on my s2 for a while. Works great on the S3 for me.
I already had the data on the SD card so just reinstalled the games, opened from GL to SD and they worked.

The GL to SD works fine for Nova 3 and Modern Combat 3. Move them using the GL to SD and in the settings of GL to SD check the option /sdcard/Android under add mounted folder. Once done then price mount button the top of GL to SD app and then press menu and exit (don't press unmount and exit otherwise it would not work). This would mount your external SD card as /sdcard/android. If GL to SD fail to move the games to SD card then you can even do it manually by copying games data folder from /sdcard/android/data to /extsdcard/data.
I hope you understand my poor way of explaining things I hope it helps
---------- Post added at 12:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 PM ----------
GL to SD works only for the games which install there files in /sdcard/android/data folder or /sdcard/data folder.

link2sd
link2sd works with ext3 partition confirmed.. if you want details contact to me, native app2sd does not work :crying:

" Low Disk Space " Solution

I know we've all come across this at least once. Whether it's your Device or, your Girls. That Damm Pop Up saying " Low Disk Space " . I now have a solution for it that isn't as drastic as Re-Flashing the Entire Rom. Believe me I was surprised it would be this simple. Coincidentally it also resolved the other Pop of of " Insufficient Memory " . I would re-post it here again, but I didn't want to double post the same thing. So I'll Link you to my original Post.

Thanks for this, good idea for my wife's LG Optimus - her dialer storage is always eating up the most free space and there's only like 160mb to play with total. And she's tied to the thing all the time so getting it away from her long enough to flash a new rom and set up a2sd-ext is tough - this will be a lot quicker.

Keep me posted on how it goes. I've had a few people try it on other Devices already with no issues .
I moved my dialer storage and it did next to nothing. Then i moved data for a couple games and it made a HUGE difference.
So ... be wise about what apps you move data for I guess, but I can confirm it works well with song pop lol

It really just depends on how much data is there. Your dialer storage could have been so small it made no difference. I haven't had to worry about low storage on my doubleshot because we got almost 1GB for apps and I usually install about 200MB of apps and that's it. Some of the main memory hogs are games that need 300mb or more of additional data like gun bros ect. Angry birds also takes a chunk of space.

Very true. But for most users Dialer Storage is Big. I still play the Hell out of Angry Birds. Sometimes the App Cahce gets as high as 50MB, and Data well lets not get into that. Since it's on the SD Card I don't much worry about it. But I always tell people to keep in mind that the SD Card Class has a lot to do with how the Apps perform form the SD Card.

Kool thanks for the input . Yes moving App Data to the SD Card will free up a good amount of space. Just be sure your running at least a Class 4 or better SD Card.

Yeah i got a 16 gig class 4 with a 1 gig ext partition. I'm not heavy with my volume of apps though. Outta curiosity i wonder how much would be freed if I move my angry birds too ... lol
Depends on how much App Data you have. I always look at how much is there before I make a decision to move it. Also gives me a good judge of what I gained. Just be aware that some Games slow down if you move App Data to the SD Card. But it also depends on the SD Card, and your SD Card read ahead. But you can always move it back.
Yeah I have no real need to move anything now. Was just curious to see. I'll look at it later when I get bored ... it'll gimme something to do.
I was having an issue with my phone running choppy occasionally and I started getting random reboots every once in a blue moon. Turned out to be my memory settings and nothing with my data storage. So I'm back to being completely satisfied with everything again.
I'm wondering how others have their read ahead speed set. I have mine at 2048kb because thats what I read was optimal. But when I experimented with v6 supercharger, it said I should set that to 1024kb instead. I also have a 16gb class 2 microsd with a 1gb partition. I'm no longer using v6. Just wondering.

How do I figure out what is the best setting from this? 16gb class 2.

Q. How are you managing with 9gb free memory? Your feedback please

It seems the 16gb S4 is still the only option at the moment in the UK, I originally cancelled my order when I found out about the internal memory issue and the fact you can't save apps to the sd card. If you root some of my banking apps won't work, so that is not an option, not that apps work all the time properly on the sd card anyway. Also if you rent films from Googlr these cache in internal memory.
So for all you 16gb owners what is the internal memory space left , what have you installed and how much of an inconvenience is it, if at all. Please be honest, I just want to see what you can get on each of your S4's. Are any of you struggling already or believe you might.
Your help here will make me decide whether I just bite the bullet and compromise with the 16gb. Thanks in advance.
I've been a bit more careful than usual, not installed any of the big storage hog games, disabled Document Sync (which inexplicably tries to fill the internal storage with dropbox content), moved TomTom data to the SD card, and now have about 100 applications installed and 6Gb of space left. Not really a problem for me as yet, I'm using DiskUsage to monitor the situation. I'm also dithering about the One, but at the moment I'd rather have the 9Gb+64Gb SD card than the One's 25Gb. Might change if I have problems later and the One gets a 64Gb variant.
Thanks for feedback. One of my friends has only 2.5gb free now and hasn't installed any of his fav games. No room if he tried.
Anybody else got feedback.
it's kind of dumb that it has this amazing quad core processor and one of the best phone gpu's around and yet, you cant even install all the best games on it... lol
I think a potential cure will be for android itself to have a proper api to utilize external SD for heavy resources like those in the obb folder.
Unfortunately I don't think google will support this since they have been on a no SD card agenda for quite a while now.

Rooting isn't the cure. I know for a fact that some of the banking apps won't work with a rooted device. Also, internal memory functions better so don't mind all apps being there but really need a bigger memory to start off with.

For me the 9Gb of storage is enough i don't generally game on my phone, and only install what i use, music, vids & pictures all go onto my SD card.
But i think the S4 should have launched at 32Gb this time around, back in the day the S1 launched with 8Gb, when the S2 came it was bumped upto 16Gb at launch
I think the easiest option really would be for Samsung to come up with a way to allow you to save apps to SD card, even though Jellybean doesn't have this feature.
I do think though when the S5 arrives next year 32Gb will be standard, with options of 64Gb & 128Gb to.
I don't have any problems... Lots of apps and a few games installed... Batman, GTA, mini motor... I don't have much time to play but nice with the opportunity

Doesn't bother me at all as I don't game on my phone. If you're a gamer then it might sting a little but apart from that music is via google play and photos in the 32 gig SD card

They're not enougfh for me! That problem is due to Samsung or Google? In other words, is there the possibility that with android 4.3 the problem will be solved?
The problem is with Google/Android Team, but they're not going to fix it.
They intentionally removed the App to SD feature because of the high failure rate of SD Cards and amount of complaints due to it. Rooting is your only choice to put apps on SD it seems

It is only removed on Samsung ROMS.
AOSP android or CM10.1 just moves the apps fine.
So the problem is within Samsung.
Aren't the obb(textures from heavy games are saved as obb for example) files stored on the external sd?

That's not the answer I got from Samsung - not that I 100% trust what they say, but I assumed they were in this scenario
We are sorry to hear that the space on your handset is nearly full already. We understand the frustration this has caused.
In regards to your email, please note that moving or installing apps to external storage is no longer available on any Android from version 4.0 and above, due to how the Android operating system reads storage on our devices. The Android OS now operates on a unified storage system from Ice Cream Sandwich onward, meaning it will read one data partition for storage, rather than two.
The reason why previous Android versions had the capability of moving apps to external storage was because the phones memory was split into two partitions, one for external storage and one for internal.
Now, with Android using a unified storage system, all applications will be stored completely on the internal memory of the phone. This allows for around 11GB of storage space on a 16GB device for apps. Google, the developer of Android, feels this is more than enough for users, as their operating system was designed for use on their own phones as well, which do not have any external storage at all.
Please also note that we do not advertise any of our devices as having the capability of running or installing apps directly onto the external memory card. You will have to install your apps to the internal memory, but anything else (music, videos, documents etc.) can be stored on your external memory card.

Hi the thread already exist please suppress this one and next time search a little there is just two page ...
There are two apps I have used that do this fairly easily. Try either App2SD or Link2SD. Both do the same thing. I also believe AppMonster does, but I've never used it for this purpose. If they say you cannot move an app, it is probably because the MOJO sets the external microSD in a way that it is detected as emulated rather than physical. As I've yet to get a microSD to work at all, I cannot tell what the problem is...I just know from experience on the Acer A700 that -it- is set up so you cannot send apps to the microSD.

Most high end games are 500mb - 1gb or more. I like to play a lot of different games you know? Just kind of sucks that we can't move them to expandable storage at the moment. 16 GB is not going to be enough in the future when more games become compatible.

Yeah, I filled mine with Horn, Bard's Tale, AvP, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Reaper, and about ten random others. I've filled my tablet, and it's got 32GB. I loves me some games.

Apps to SD from Sony

Wasn't too sure if this was old hat or a new development as I've been using Foldermount for my apps 2 SD solutions.
GSM arena are reporting that a recent update will allow movement of apps to the SD card, they've also stated that this update is for the T2 variant and isn't available for the Z series but if a mod could take this and make it available for the Z series then it'd be a nice addition to our phones.

Why do you need it.
Pictures, music and videos are on SD card.
If you instal Huge games it will instal around 50-100mb on phone, and everything else on sd card (knows as SD Data).
You want about half of google play on your phone?
And what if I do? Is it better to have that option or not to? If I wanted limited Iphone or WP i would buy it at the first place!?

isn't sd data is when you could install app to sd?? given that now we don't have install app to sd, we don't have sd data?? so in that regards.... i think most games now are 1+ gb, so all that takes up storage on your internal. doesn't it? and we start off with.... 11gbs left? so assuming not everybody but some ppl that owns large games they could install about 10 games at most?

First of all, dont be so arogant on forum.
I didnt tell him that "he dont need it" i asked why he need it.
So many users come to play backsit modding of forum.
After you read it, ask your self "who are you to STOP me from asking simple question". If you dont like it, dont answer it and report of you mean that offended you.

He is offering a solution for people...
You ate being rude "you want half of Google play on your phone"
If you aren't interested why even bother commenting aside from being snide?
Report me all you like, I'm not playing mod at all I just think you're being ridiculous considering the person is just trying to help others.
I have data I would like to free up. Dead trigger alone takes up 1/2 a GB.

That's wrong, huge games like san andreas, MC4 or Real racing 3 (in fact every game and application) install data on Memory, since on the Z serie there's 2 Sd cards, being main the phone memory
so you have Sd/0 and Sd/1, SD/0 is your phone memory and the one the apps/games use for data install, take out your SD memory and your apps will work fine since there's no data on it

Thats absolutely not true, when you install the likes of a gameloft game or an EA game, they're in sdcard0/Android/obb or android/data, these are both on internal memory, people who are rooted have relied heavily on apps such as folder mount for their gaming needs and the want to take the brunt of large install away from their internal memory, being at 16GB or less as it appears on android if you install 5 large games you'll see that your memory is very very low, using foldemount eradicates the need for your internal memory to be used up.
The reason I mentioned this features is because using foldermount and the like are all third party apps which people would go without if it were possible.
I don't need half of google on my phone no, not at all, i'll repeat what i said first so you understand, If you install five, (not fifty) just five large games then your internal memory is nearly full.
My install of GT Racing 2 900MB, my Real Racing 3 installation was over 1GB for certain, fifa i've seen go to over 1.5GB, it soon racks up. 100MB would be candy crush, i personally don't bother with the likes of them.
Thanks to everyone else with a positive reply Hopefully a dev will see this, it'll be nice if it were baked into a rom.
Apps to sd is very important to gamers

What a bag of turd some people are. Although its of no surprise. Its us, the bright human race at all. Ofcourse we need to ne able move or straight up install apps to SD. For the people who have reasons of their own against it, there's a new flash for you: dont use ot
@mneu777 I wrote that in the OP m8 But wouldn't it be nice if you didn't need a third party app? I use folder mount myself too, but would be nice if a third party app wasn't needed, eventually companies like Sony may actually notice that their high end phones have nowhere near enough memory in them for the apps that are available today, personally I think 32GB is a perfect allocation of internal memory, all flagships should give this much. Sony, Samsung and now HTC are all 16GB ( the models that I have to buy from here in the UK anyway)
That mod will be very nice !
I have a 2 gps programs ( i know there will be questons why 2 ? answer: becouse i need it !! ) and i use folder mount. It's working on games and other programs but not on my gps...i don't know why so 2 gps = 7 Gigs on internal and this mod for me will life save...
regards
