Froyo vs ICS vs Gingerbread which is best for performance? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi all I just ordered an HD2 from Ebay, previous phone was an LG Optimus V and it's quite an upgrade even though the HD2 is 2+ years old.
I want to go the Android route with it but I absolutely want the best performance I can get for the phone. I was wondering which version of the Android OS is more optimized for the HD2? For example, I've seen Youtube videos of Froyo on the HD2 and it was very smooth and perfect, I've also seen videos of ICS on the HD2 and one was kinda laggy and the other seemed to run smooth.
What is the recommended Android version to put on the HD2? Thank you so much, I'm happy to be apart of this historic community of the HD2.

Thank you, I've located the threads to those ROMs and looked them up on Youtube and they all are running great on the HD2. Thank you for your help sir

Ics is the best for gaming performance hands down, but some of the applications may not be optimized for speed on the hd2 (hacked YouTube and gingerbread apps work prefectly smooth on ics roms)

[Q] best android based rom?

hi,
i was wondering, now with all the android roms beeing published to xda
i'd realy like to know which rom is actualy the most recent, or the best, with the least errors and best to work
and another thing,
is it possible to delete windows from my phone and let my phone start directly from android, to avoid the long boot time?
@natihorny - Here's a link to TechBurrow's thread. There is a video/ links for what you need to do to flash your phone with Android and have it boot up directly to it without dealing with WM. I've yet to do this, as I'm still at work, but plan on giving it a try in the coming days.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894423
I would suggest that you dont use NAND builds yet they are far from perfect but instead you should use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847631 it is motomans black and blue build wich is by far the best sense android build even much better than any ram and nand build and as for winmo flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893438 and it will boot android just as fast as any nand build and you will never have problems with this setup
this is a very, very subjective thread. there is not "best" rom--it's all about what you're looking for in a rom. for example, vanilla froyo vs. desire vs. desire hd vs. miui vs. gingerbread. or sd vs. sd ram vs. nand.
personally, i'm a proponent of sd ram. i haven't actually used it long term, but it seems to be very fast (and based on darkstone, it's even faster than nand). especially with nand being very young in its development, i would stick to sd for now. plus, it's much easier to flash and fix in case you corrupt your rom somehow. there's a few out there (just look for "[SD] [RAM]" in the descriptions), but one i'd like to point out is darkstone's superram froyo. i'm kinda busy right now, but that's definitely the rom i'm going to be using and modding to my liking.
good luck and have fun flashing!
ok, thanks everyone for the helpfull answers,
i had still one other question and thats,
i just bought a new car with bluetooth function, though my cell phone and the bluetooth of the car don't connect like it should, (thats why i wanted an android with the least amount of problems) and i was wondering if the fact that the bluetooth is only visible 120 seconds may cause the problem.

i was wondering, in some of the android roms, you can choose skins from htc sense and have the htc market, and can download more htc backgrounds, sounds, etc. etc.
and now i have the rom you suggested, both for windows as for android which i'd like to use, but doesn't have that htc sense thing buildt in the android rom, how can i get it back?

The build you are speaking of is the desire hd. I didn't suggest that build because it is laggy and slow. Even after 10 restarts and 2 days of use it still laggs alot compared to the one I posted in B4. Take it from someone that has tried every build available the motoman build is BY FAR the BEST after you get over all the HOOPLAH over the new htc sense wich is cool i'll admit but the coolness wears off after about 2 days and your just stuck with a laggy non responsive HD build. now others will post how good thier HD build works after hours of tweeking and reading and tweeking and reading. But trust me you will go back to the motoman build after you try the hd for a few days
@ wrecless
thanks for your view about which rom to choose, i'll do as you say, since you realy know what you're talking about, and i was hoping you tell me whenever a perfect rom from the htc desire is out?

I installed the darkstone build and had problems but I cant remember exactly what they were. In my opinion the motoman build was just as fast and had no problems. I'v been trying everything just because i want something different but I always come back to this build nothing out there seams to work as well as this one and as for the nand builds they are all RMNET. So untill I see a working PPP build I'm going to keep using this SD build

[Q] Best Android 2.3 ROM for HD2 YET ?

Hello Folks,
Right now I'm using wildfire, but I don't like it any more. I'm planning to switch to HTC HD2. how good is it ?
More over I'm no more impressed with Windows Operating system available in it (W 6.5). I have gone through some positive replies and videos on HD2 running Android 2.3 (Ginger Bread). So please help me out to find which ROM will be fast good enough with less issues to use on HD2.....
I'll be waiting for your valuable replies !

Android runs perfectly without any performance issues for a longer time now.
There are a lot of roms in the Hd2 Android-nand section which are running without any bugs.
Which fits to you you have decide yourself.
I would recommend you to have a look at typoon(look at my sig), hyperdroid and nexusHD2..think thats a good start to begin with.
you would be best off getting a native android device
If you want a dualboot system with a SD-card-Android, than look here:

Go for a native android device
Of course there are some nice Android builds for HD2. BUT, nothing is perfect. For example I have these two issues that are not solved in any build.
1. The speaker volume (ringtones, notifications, music) is very low on android compared to windows mobile.
2. Whenever you press the wake up button the screen comes up only after 1 or 2 seconds.
So there are some issues like these. So better go for a native Android device.
I would have to second Pongsters Hyperdroid CM7 newest build. The only thing you need to do is replace the stock camera with another. Like the MIUI camera or the LG camera.

These issues are solved in some roms:
The sound is related to /system/lib/libaudio.so & /system/etc/firmware/default.acdb
I forget what the wake up lag is related to (Sensors lib i beleive)
I use a personally modded version of CyanogenMod-7 to run on my HD2 and don't suffer from your problems!
It does depend which rom you are using but you should be able to patch/replace those files!
Hope this helps

In my opinion the graphic glitches are annoying in current gingerbread roms (as much as I experienced)... I use Desire DL roms from SD, but I'm looking for a relatively bug-free rom with htc-sense to flash instead of WM 6.5 and run android directly.... I'll be honored if someone could recommend me a rom, running as fast as possibe with least bugs, and specially without delay after installing applications or waking up on calls....

Use official Miui from Miui-devs.com. Rom updated every week, if bugs are found, they usually get fixed with-in few days or in next weekly built.
so far i have no bugs. other that common signal bar issue that most in not all users have. Sense 2.1 ROM was also bug free for me.
is it true that running android via NAND has less battery consumption than via SD ?
cos I run via SD and the battery drops like a %every 2 minute...if I am on wifi...

wow, didnt expect HD to be faster than DHD! thanks for the input! btw, just out of interest, how do the screens compare between those three devices? im guessing SGS2 would have far better screen
Galaxy S2 is faster, but some programs may start faster on the HD2, and I know that's strange! and it happens randomly. probably related to background processes or something.
HD2 is also not always faster than DHD, it's just the huge amount of tweaking the HD2 ROMs get that they feel faster, but that performance is ROM-dependent.
If you get two tweaked ROMs, one on the HD2 and the other on DHD, and both from the same developer (Core team makes ROMs for both as far as I can remember), I bet the DHD will be faster.
Samsung screens IMHO are the best on the market, but having to deal with a none-sense droid phone with not much of custom ROMs is a pain.

I run NAND Android on my HD2 and have been running Android on mine for close to 9 months. Granted I run a non-sense ROM (Hyperdroid-CM7) as my daily driver. But I tested dozens of NAND Android ROMs for the HD2 and it run pretty much all ROMs very smoothly with the exception of the Sense 3.0 ROMs, It was laggy with those ROMs. The MIUI ROMs run pretty smooth on the HD2 but you do have an occasional lag here and there, but I stress the word occasional.
As for your original question the HD2 can hang with just about any native Android device on the market with the same or close to the same specs. Now keep in mind I am not talking about any of new devices sporting dual core processors with bigger RAM and mor memory.

The only real lag was when you would first open a app sometimes it would take somtimes the a second or two to open. It would also happen when you would be transitioning from one function to another, you know like when you opened the phone or camera. But it was always just a second or two delay/lag nothing that is intolerable. Or nothing most other native Android devices do from time to time. But the Sense 3.0 ROMs were borderline intolerable, at least for me.

[Q] Today's Androids for HD2

Hello.
I was gone from forum in a couple of weeks because I got used to WP7 on my HD2. But since ICS came out I couldn't just leave it. So I want to ask you how is ICS working on HD2? Is it so slow and laggy like the other Android ROMs for HD2 were some months ago? If yes which other ROM is relatively fast and smooth today? And if something changed since then can I get names of the fastest and smoothest ICS and GB ROMs with their advantages and disadvantages?
Thank you.
okey~
They are allfast n smooth. For example check out hyperdroid or cm7ite for GB or icecream tosti AOSP+ or tytungs cm9 ics rom for ICS. Ics still have a LITTLE zoom prob n flash isnt fully supported yet. But using youtube app for vids works great. Im using ics now for weeks (as my phone for work, ftp vpn works) and no probs here. If you want a rom which works perfectly with full hardware support check GB. In both, ics n gb there isnt any "slow" or lag anymore. You are also able to oc with stock kernel or dorimanx or fikret kernel up to max 1600mhz. Just check it out by yourself.
Question.. how can someone ever get used to wp7 lol? Its trash without any functionality and lag of apps, imo. They made a huge step back with this os.
So check out the android nand rom section
Sent from my HTC HD2
So answering your question:
I also always liked to play with apps and so on but all the Androids I've tried then were slow or were crushing or restarting constantly. So I had to find an OS which would never fail me. WP7 showed to be the best one for it. It's the fastest and smoothest OS I've ever tried which never crushes and is unbelievably intuitive. I've never had any problems with it so I just stayed with it.
Anyway, thank you for your answer. Can we play the best 3D games without lags on ICS? Which ICS ROM would you recommend most?
Sincerelly
okey~
ICS is not there yet, would need full Hardware Acceleration to work before it gets into a stable mode.
If you want a no hassle, fast ROM go give cmhtcleo's CM7 nightlies or Tytung's Nexus HD2 (Gingerbread) or Tyween's Typhoon or Dorimanx's light ROM or Hyperdroid or any of the CM7/ AOSP GB ROM a try.
If you are an advanced user go for Dorimanx's Highend ROM - read up properly though.
Both of these configs will run apps and games pretty slickly for a 1GHz 448 MB (user memory) device, and are pretty stable - my phone has been up for 300 hours without a reboot now.
If you want eye candy, Sense
I think Tytung ROM is very smooth for ICS,,,,,,,but for running games without lag, i prefer you running Gingerbread,,,it's stable
Maybe you can try....
I suggest you flash smokin901's MIUI V4 which is superb.

? You literally install an app and you have Link2SD, it's hardly much effort. And the UI of ICS is infinitely superior to GB, the HWA makes a tonne of difference in scrolling and gaming and especially the browser performance, and on ICS things load faster. There's no feasible reason one should use GB over ICS now other than simply not wanting to bother because they already have GB installed.
ICS custom roms are improving day by day. I have tytung ICS rom now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860
and it works very good for me. I have no issues with camera or phone calls.
Only 160 dpi seems to be problem, while creating shortcuts to contacts... i just can't see call button when touched them. But if you are using 240dpi it works almost flawlessly now.
But if you won't like to install ICS rom, you should try previously mentionted Hyperdroid, my adventure with Android on Leo started with this rom and had it for a long time.

I'm using Paranoidandroids ROM and it's the best one I've ever used.
Ihave tried dozens of Roms & [hstr-Touchwiz][SamasungGalaxySII] is one of the stable ones so far, too bad the SD-Rom is discontinued but there are 2 in the NAND section

Installed yesterday and work great from now. Very smooth
Right now, IN MY OPINION, based on my experience, you're best options for HD2 are Tytung's ICS Rom if you want an ICS based Rom, its smooth and everything works, Paranoid Android is good also and has allot more Mods but more buggy. Gingerbread based Roms are all pretty much perfect by now. I recommend UrDroid for Sense 3.5, Pure Cynogen for CM7 Based Rom, and MYMIUI for MIUI based Rom. I have personally had the best experience with these Roms, but there are others that are excellent roms as well, I dont mean to take anything away from them, i respect the works of all the chefs that make the HD2 Great.
Happy Flashing!
Would agree with above on ICS.
GB even with all the tweaks in the world is a UI horror in use & viewing, when look at level of development gone into it through official & unofficial channels I would of expected a hell of a lot more no hassle innovative features ...
I saw 200~ hours uptime with my vanilla miui 2.4.20. Did not have any problems. Using till 20/4/12.
suggestion
I have a Android froyo 2.2 (darkstone build the newest one desire build) on my htc hd2 everything works phone, web, mms, keyboard just everything however the battery life is horrible i mean bad. with out using the phone and just on standby by the afternoon around 3 or 4 i have about 50% battery and yes i have tried app killer from the android market still no good. i know my battery isnt bad cause on my regular windows os it can last me a day plus so i was reading and other people dont have this problem with other os but its kinda confusing to find the rest and people dont really give enough feedback on other roms so what im asking is that does anybody eles have problems like me with the battery? if you dont can you please tell me which android ROM is best and send me a link so i can try it out thank you
