Got a brand new Xoom coming, gave my old Xoom to a family member, after buying the Xoom family edition I realized it wasn't as good as the original Xoom (IMO)
So in anycase, I have a brand new Xoom WIFI model coming
I've rooted and rom'd many phones, was big into with my EVO and my GSII which I currently have.
Never rooted or rom'd the Xoom.
The brand new one will have honeycomb on it, which I'm sure there will be an OTA update to ICS.
after reading some info on rom's here, I think my best bet is to go with the EOS rom..
Looks great
where do I start? should I let the OTA update happen when I first get it?
Root it, then rom it?
Can someone show the way possibly? What thread is the info on how to root/rom
THANKS!!

You can do it however you want.
My advice to you would be to OTA it first, see for yourself if it's good enough the way it is then.
If you think you really can't live without voiding your warranty and have to be rooted, you can still o it just as easily as you would on HC.
Like I said, try it out a couple of days without root, and then decide for yourself
If you want to root, I recommend using the Universal Root tool (look at the development section)
And flash the touch recovery from Team Rogue and one of the EOS roms.
To be fair, the latter is just preference, but you won't be disappointed if you follow my advice
Anyway,
Best of luck!
Start here. This is the procedure I shared on xda.

The most stable would be EOS 2.0.

I know it might seems strange at first, but I am going to say that the most stable ROM is either the Bugless Beast or the latest EOS nightlies
I know it sounds ridiculous but I have the feeling they're more stable at the moment than EOS 2.0.0
Edit: yes you can always unroot, but I really can't see the advantages of doing that once you've already had the balls and time to root it
EOS is a good choice, been rocking that on my Xoom for a while now. There is lagg but I believe that is something to do with my tablet for some reason. Another one you can always try is AOKP as they do their roms for the Xoom and from experience on my gnexus they are excellent .
Ota update first then rock the rom on your tab.
Yes you can always restore and remove the root no worries

EOS for sure.
Running stable 2.0 right now, found nightly 107 a bit buggy for me. Before that was on nightly 92.
I also use mjmocha's blacked out gapps package.
I've tried all the roms available for the xoom, and keep running back to EOS. Can't wait for stable 3.0.

I couldn't live without a Rooted A500 for ad-hoc support to tether to my iPhone 3GS.
I did everything in this order.
*********** Read Instruction Carefully **********
1.
Downgrade from 3.2 to 3.0.1
I used method 1 from this thread:
Here
2.
ROOT 3.0.1
I used this thread but there are other ways:
Here
3.
Install ROOTED 3.2 custom ROM of your chioce.
I used Taboonay 2.1. I downloaded the ROM right to the A500 and then copied it to the SD card using 'File Manager HD'.
Instructions here:
Here
Works Great on my A500 and only took an hour to complete. And Taboonay already has Ad-hoc fix.
Nah, too troublesome.
I rather wait for root to be available for 3.2

That's a good question!
If your tablet needs to be rooted, and you updated yours to v3.2 from 3.0.1 via OTA, you'll loose the root privilege. - That's the answer.
So, to be able to get his tablet rooted, either downgrade and install his/her chosen ROM (already root).
And that's what I did on my A500 when I updated to 3.2 via OTA. I have to downgrade back to 3.0.1 and installed my chose ROM.

Thor Transformer Revolver 3.5 Port v4.1
I updated my A500 before I realized I cannot root the device with the new update. Now I have to downgrade it. I look at the tutorial on how to downgrade but I am confused since I am new to this. When I download the package from the tutorial post to downgrade, do I download it directly to my tablet or my PC? At instruction #3 it says use and editor to edit the UID number. Is this file keep on the tablet or the PC? Like I said I am a little bit confuse here. If anyone can provide me some help it will be great.

Because custom ROMs are buggy as hell. I'd rather have full functionality than not be able to use Bluetooth or volume in a set of games or some other minor annoying bugs.
The update just hit the US. I'm sure that will give people the opportunity to work on root for 3.2.
@max8176
The downgrade has to be done over your computer. You only need to connect your tablet to the computer when the software tells you to.
You also edit that file on your computer.
After your downgrade you have do the next steps (root, flash new rooted or custom rom) on your tablet.

Thanks, I figured it out. Have another question. After I downgraded back to 3.01. Will I be able to update through Acer? I went to system and check for any update and it said my system is up-to-date. Does that mean I won't be able to do auto update from Acer?
Please, let me know if downgrade will leave all the data, programs and settings on the tablet or if it will wipe it clean.

no just did it this morning for myself, keeps everything however the 3.0.1 downgrade file (one I used, don't know if there's a 3.1 ) is horribly mangled and there's force closes out the butt but its just enough to get root and install CWM as long as you have iconiaroot app and Acer recovery installer from market installed already as I don't think the keyboard will be usable
I did the second easy method though where you just place the stock rom update.zip file on SD card and install on boot, I believe the one you do connected to your computer will wipe everything

Sorry to bug - Do you have 3G support using the custom ROM? Heard a lot of the ROMS are only written for the A500 without 3G radio?
Want to downgrade then install custom 3.2 rooted, but need to make sure it is compatible with the A501 (3G radio)

reading this section, I wonder with which CF root you did replace the original?
With this one? CF-Root-SGN_XX_DBT_KK9-v5.0-CWM5.zip
I ask this to you because I have updated to 2.3.6 and want to use chainfires method to
gain root again on this phone. But am wearily with doing this, because I do not want
to brick my phone. As you understood already I am a newbie!
Thanks anyway.

It depends on your kernel version. If you read chainfires tutorial it will tell you how to check. Go to settings-About Phone- then scroll down to kernel. It should say N7000XX then what your kernel is. So mine is N7000XXKKA

If you got 7k in Quadrant you probably had a super lite ROM flashed on your SGS2 or used titanium to freeze every app. Otherwise I'm calling bull**** on your claim because I also had an SGS2 and it was nowhere near as nimble as you make it out. The Note is every bit as fast as the SGS2 with 2.3.6 and a few tweaks. In fact my girlfriend has a white SGS2 arriving on Tuesday so I'll be more than happy to throw up a side-by-side video to disprove what you said.

You can install the "original version" of this ROM from your recovery if (and only if) you root your tablet and install Amon-Ra recovery on it.

THIS LEAKED ROM IS FOR DEVELOPMENT
•Give the developers time to take this leaked ROM and make a stable release.
•Currently there is no version that keeps full Root and Recovery. A500 tablets will bootloop flashing the CWM version.
•A501 users can flash the CWM version but there is no 3G.
•A500 users can flash the stock ROM, but there is no Root and no way to install Recovery. Going back to 3.2.1 is not verified.
PATIENCE PLEASE, while this is being worked on.
I am willing to bet within a week or so we will start seeing ICS Roms that can be flashed with either Acer Recovery, CWM or RA.

This is not the same rom that will come thru OTA.. Acer on there website has said the acer a500 WILL Receive the same Added app updates the new Acer lock screen as well as the Acer ring. This leaked rom has none of them. This is the reason people are saying that the leaked rom is a Alpha build. and will Likely have issues and compatibility issues
I don't understand what you mean, Renee

Anyway, you can be right but, for me, there is no need to change anything on this Rom. .. The only thing to change now to be close to perfection, is these two crappy microphones...

I believe she is talking about the "acer ring", which is some overlay that appears when you put 5 fingers on the screen in a ring shape.
Sent from my tomato filled Evo
There should be a ring lock screen that has the ability to run some apps without unlocking. by draging it to that app.. also a more complex one built into the UI
as well as some new acer apps that nobody has mentioned.. If you go to acer.com and find there latest news it talks about these things..
but i could be wrong. Im still waiting a few more days to see what comes about this boot loader unlock commands now available..
Its all good who knows at this point

i know. but i don't need it. I'm aware some people might, but having no root doesn't mean its not stable. Ive seen a bunch of posts where people keep saying its for developers only and not stable. I'm just trying to say that its super stable. IF you don't need root, just flash the stock one. It far surpasses any custom 3.2 roms out there. even if i never get another update, i'll be happy.

i always ran a rooted stock 3.2.1 anyway, so this ICS build (i could care less about the "acer ring". in fact i'd prefer to not have it) with the root method laid out in the official thread works perfectly for me.

Just a note on what telemike said, I've talked to quite a few people who used KJY's method to revert.
So, not 100% no touchie. lol.
I only have one more question, the camera is working? and I can flash it in Revery mod my stock rom 3.2.1 unroot?
I have the international Galaxy Note.
It was rooted.
Now I just received the update to Android 4.0 (ICS) and it has already download the updated OS. However, after the download, it ask whether I want to proceed with the installation. I have NOT install it yet because I was not sure if I should do it.
Then I came here to check out the review of how people like the ICS and found out that some people advise not to do it because of some type of bug.
Since I download the ICS OTA (over the air), is it safe to go ahead and install it or the problem is due to people install it with Kies instead of OTA.
What is your advice and what should I do at this moment? I don't mind reformat the whole phone and start from scratch. I just want it to be a safe update that would provide good battery life and performance.
Thanks.

Gingerbread is better than ics regarding battery life. All of us here running on ics are on the edge, if you dont do it right, well hello superbrick bug. Its up to you.
^ agree.
But in ics, the firmware itself is safe if you dont disturb the recovery. people said factory reset in Settings is safe. But, i know your phone is still new, dont risk yourself..
on the other side, i used DXLP9 version of ics and my battery is fine..
From what I read from you, you don't seem to be the tipical geek who is desperate to have the last ROM / Kernel / MOD. You seem happy with your phone. A smart advice in that case would be "don't update it". A few points to consider:
- Yes, you are exposed to the danger of a brick, but only if you start to TOUCH things you are unlikely to do (from what I assume of you). So that risk, in your case, seems non-existant. The risk is, particulary, if you WIPE or FLASH from RECOVERY. ¿Have you ever entered recovery mode?
- If you update to ICS, there will be things you will like, and things you won't. I have not seen battery issues. Perfomance? To be honest, Gingerbread was a little better.
- You will be able to delete a single notification instead ALL of them, just by draging it.
- But on the other hand, with ICS, the USB support is a hell of a lot better. I plug USB flash drives on my cell, with my USB On-The-Go adapter (do not forget the Galaxy Note has an usb HOST port, very similar to a PC). But sometimes, it failed to recognize them. With ICS that problem is gone, and every drive I plug in something, i can use it with no problems. Even USB keyboard and mice! (that's an interesting option). Previously, it would recognized those devices, but not support them.
There are more differents, but these were the most relevant ones. So, there are some PROs and CONs. Eventually, with time, you'll probably end up needing ICS to be able to use a few apps. Google Chrome, for example, requires ICS.
The choice is yours. I would do it, but it is difficult for me trying to be impartial.
I'm on ICS XXLPY and it works fine, battery running almost the same as on gingerbread (maybe even better)
Take your time to think about it, and check more info on forum, to tell you the truth I did it and was lucky cause didn't know you can brick the phone...
Wish you luck with that...

if you still want to update then use the odin method that is safe and reliable
Since you're already on a rooted gingerbread stock rom, I suggest you go flash the rom in the following link to get a great ice cream sandwich experience
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802
I have updated both via OTA and Kies in both cases had lots of problems, however after Flashing it with PC Odin everything is working fine, and yes battery is much worst than GB, I have flashed many different kernels finally settling down to Goku but looks like on ICS battery has no remedy.
ICS works fine until u brick the phone..
Wait for the fix..
I think that ICS is amazing, I'm getting battery life almost as gingerbread.
Here is some screenshot to backup it.
I'm on RocketROM v7 - ICS - LQ3 with CF-Root LQ2 Kernel
Best regards,
M.

Forums always give you horror stories, complaints, etc.
But... I'm on stock GB and have been wondering the same thing; is ICS worth it?
My GB device has good battery and performance. Maybe not the shiny new bells and whistles... but is the trade off / risk worth it?
EDIT: I was a Dell Streak user and familiar with Custom ROMS. I flashed them all. But... they were not perfect. At least my Note on GB is uber stable.
GB N ICS not much different, just done some changes in setting.Wait for jelly bean.

You're right when using a touchwiz rom but use a cyanogenmod/aosp based rom and you'll notice a BIG difference. If that doesn't impress you then go a step further and flash the paranoid android rom and as previously mentioned, "you'll be blown away!"

Blown away unless you like Touchwiz and more Stylus functionality, thus reason most of us bought the device...
Go for Paranoid! Don't stay on stock anymore
Updated about 4 weeks ago to 4.03 with Kies with NO problems what so ever, battery life is like it was before...100% top, still get my average of 2-3 days usage depending on what I´m doing:fingers-crossed:,same as before I updated. The only thing annoys me a bit is a few apps that die out on me now and then but I can live with that, all in all depending on what launcher I´m using and what I´m doing I don´t really notice a big difference.
This thread is going to be starting up again for a little while now that we have some new builds of CM for the Note 8.
Hello developers and anyone else!
This is my first developer-related thread and I don't know how to begin, but this thread is going to be dedicated to porting AOSPA 3+ to the Note 8.
I've semi-successfully ported Paranoid Android 3.60 to the N5110, I can get it to install and boot but that is all.
Since I'm going to be on vacation from July 22 until July 26th, not much will be going on here, but I wanted to get a thread going.
Also, after different ways of flashing I still get stuck at the boot animation. If anybody has any advice that can help with this issue it would be greatly appreciated as it would help get the ROM out for release sooner.
Planned Features
S-Pen support with Note Buddy Lite
Custom Kernel with O/C support
More will come once I get this booting!
Cheers, 64kb.

Any chance of this working on the AT&T Note 8.0? SGH-I467

this will be really something if you can get it to work!
good luck, and I'll try to help if I can...
Until I can get this to boot, there isn't much of a chance I'll start trying to get this on other versions. Keep in mind that this is my first time doing anything development so it might be a while before this project gets out for release.

Just have fun with it...I've been a developer off and on for more than a few decades and never have done any system level stuff like you're trying so I think it's nifty you are even taking a whack at it. No harm in trying...plus the rest of us can learn from you too. so THANkS again...
Would this work using the kernel for Sbrissen's CM10.1 Note 8.0 rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2366463
I'm excited to see this develop. My Note 8 gets to me on Saturday and I loved PA when I've flashed it one my phone. I'm sure I'll get bored of TouchWiz fast enough to flash this as soon as it's useable

There's a CyanogenMod rom that works well while you wait.
So I'm back from vacation now and I asked sbrissen permission to use his CM 10.1 build as a base, hopefully I get the needed permission and this project will start up again! Also, I've added a planned features list.

Will you be including hold back to force close? That's one that's not in the GS3 version?
This would be great if so - currently running PA 3.99 on my Note 2 and miss features on my Note 8 (running CM 10.2).

If you can get this to work I would really like to know how you did it because I would like to try my hand at porting too

Thought
So I finally got a mash of PA 3.99 (slick_rick's Note 2 version) and CM10.2 (sbrissen) "working", in that it images and starts to boot, but with the same results you got - looped logo. FWIW, CM10 also gets the oblong boot logo, but then snaps to normal. This lead me to first thought, which is the framework-res.apk needs to have the dpi settings added for the Note 8, which looking it up is tvdpi - notes I've found in research say that the hdpi will scale, but I can't say for certain. I'm going to try copying the framework-res.apk over from CM10 and see what I get.
Wow, thank goodness someone is working on PA3+ for Note 8. Running CM10.2 but missing the Tablet/Phablet/Phone mode!
looking forward seeing this in action!
Are you still working on this project?
