Windows 8 Release Preview - Windows 8 General

They released it a week or so earlier than the rumored release date. Downloading now, thought I'd post this here.

I love this Release Preview!
Now all metro apps work great!
(except Internet Explorer, which still freezes )

Internet Explorer 10 is the most fast and amazing for me
Anybody tested performance in games?

I'm loving it so far, the apps have had a huge overhaul. Music doesn't look like it was ripped out of the Xbox 360 Dashboard anymore. Mail is easier to handle, People is just overall better!

Best Apps/Games for Windows 8

Hey guys, so I have been running on Windows 8 for 4 days now and I love it. For some reason I hated the Metro UI in Consumer Preview but I love it in RTM, maybe because it's finally finished.
So I have been browsing the Windows Store and found some good apps that are worth downloading.
• Engadget
• Game Dev Tycoon - I HIGHLY recommend this game, too bad that it's only a Demo which lasts for about 30 minutes but it's a great sneek peek to the upcoming game for the Windows 8. I am sure that this will be the hit of Windows Store once it's released.
• Fruit Ninja - Oh, I am sure you know this one!
Post your favourite games or apps too
I don't wanna sound like a hater or anything like that but to me there aren't any good apps/games yet. Still waiting for the day Windows 8 is released and see if any good apps make it to the store.
Haven't found any good apps yet, fruit ninja metro lags like hell on my tablet (no idea why, the classic pc version worked fine).
And the Game Dev Tycoon is a rip-off from GameDev Story on android. Although I'd love to see if they're able to put something new into this kind of game beside the graphic.

GameDev Story is one of my favourite games on Android and this is probably the biggest reason why I enjoy the game so much,

G-Box II Android TV Box running JB

Here is the homepage for the box
http://androidtvbox.us/
I originally ran across this on ebay and after a little bit of googling found the home page. I ordered one yesterday and hopefully will have it by Friday since it shipped from the Orlando area and I'm in Lauderdale. Anyways I emailed the company last night around 11pm and within 5 minutes I got a reply, then shot some emails back and forth a bit today. It seems like they are shooting for the mass market but so far have only appealed to the power users so based off feedback so far they have switched gears(that's basically a quote from the email I got today) Also I was hoping there would be a thread about one of these boxes but cannot seem to find one here which is a bit surprising. So I will be posting a review this weekend for you guys to take a look at. I figure it has to be better than this damn Revue box I have running x86 lol.
-----UPDATE-----
I had a chance to play with it a bit Froday evening. Upon first boot it prompted me to update it and everything seemed to go through without a hitch. But after it rebooted it, it prompted me again and then froze. I eventually pulled the plug, grabbed the image from the website and updated it with that and since then it's been rock solid.
Now to the good stuff. The remote it comes with does not have good range at all. My couch is maybe 8 feet away and I felt it to be very unresponsive but to be honest the remote is pointless once you just add a 2.4ghz mouse to the equation. I spent two hours messing aroudn with the damn remote until I remebered I could just use a wireless mouse. After that everything was much easier. I added both my gmail accounts with ease, browsed the store and downloaded my apps. I even installed the latest xbmc(neon) nightly from my SMB share. Video playback with the default player works perfect even over wireless, just lacks subtitle support. For now as long as its less then 720p xbmc can handle it just fine with sub support.
I will post more once I get a chance to play with it more, but for $88 this box blows my google tv away.
For anyone interested, it is $88

Cool, even though flash isn't "supported" on JB it works like a charm on my 4.1.1 ROM
They said it does do flash

That entitled attitude will not get you very far on this forum. Why don't you just nicely ask again instead of being sarcastic and making people not want to answer your question?

That didn't really have anything to do with my question, but thanks
We all know Flash isn't being developed for Android by Adobe, but it is still usable in JB and in some browsers.
Looks like one of those at&t internet modems haha

To everyone...as as Android user for several years now, and a fan of anything user friendly enough to make nice with my network, while allowing me to tinker and expand, thus far...this thing works! And it works well. First let me tell you what I have...its the G Box I, and it looks like the only differences between the Gbox II are the case size, and additional ports: Here are the specs:
Mali400 Quad Core 3D GPU
Rockchip Cortex A8 CPU
1GB RAM
4GB* Storage
USB Storage Extendable (Flash Drives/HDD)
SD Storage Extendable (Up to 32GB!)
802.11g Wifi
HDMI Out
Audio/Video Out
Y/Pb/Pr Out (G-Box II)
2x USB 2.0 Ports (G-Box I)
4x USB 2.0 Ports (G-Box II)
First of all, It is 4.1... it is Jelly Bean! They did create a custom interface overlay, but you still have access to all the apps, settings, etc...and full google play store access. They include a media center app that can easily see my home network and plays every codec Ive thrown at it. I have a couple of Archos tablets, so Im used to great videoplayers since thats what Archos hangs their hat on. MX player does a good job but their picture quality suffers. I'm using this right now on a 50" LG Plasma...and Im getting full 1080p output. I also have a the MK802 mini PC with the Allwinner 10 chip. The MK802 works fine but it had initial problems with wireless network connectivity. No issues here...it found my network right away and so far has been rock solid. Also, so far, this thing is fast. I believe the Rockchip processor it uses is running at 1.2ghz...so far its smooth. Transitions seem smooth and video streaming is excellent. I loaded the IMDB app and payed several HD trailers... no issues...no stuttering...no frame rate drops....smooth. Like I mentioned before...it recognized my DLNA and Upnp devices like a champ. I use Twonky, and every display in my house is connected to the server... it recognized all of my shares, no issues. These mini pc devices (Gbox. MK802) are replacing all of my stand alone streamers. I have a Sony SMP N100 or one display and a Sony Bluray player that also supports DLNA on the other. I run XBMC on my server ( which is the best!)...but these devices can do everything they can do (except my server) and more. Basically youre running an android tablet on your TV, with all the access and flexibility that comes with it. Browsing works great...and it DOES play flash! Unlike my Motorola RAZR! When it updated to ICS, I lost flash...! Now I have to use the Puffin browser on it to get flash. Dolphin HD is my preferred browser, and Ill have it on the Gbox soon...
Now I am NOT getting paid to write all of this, nor am I connected with the company. I'm your average android user who wants a device to work well, talk to my windows base network, and allow for good connectivity flexibility.(not a closed proprietary ecosystem like Apple!) Im not new to the game. Before XBMC, I used my Popcorn hour for everything, and before that experimented with Window Media Player PC's, integrating my Xbox and PS3. Hell...I still have my original modded Xbox, with the original Xbox media player ( where it all started) Ive had this thing for less than a week, and my MK802 for a little over that...but Ill tell you this...its working well...very well so far!
I can confirm flash worked for me using the default browser. Still playing around so a review will come later.

Yes...I installed Plex and played around with it a while. It worked. I didnt keep it because I already use Twonky and XBMC. Once XBMC for Android is ready for primetime I'll be good. It does what Plex does and much more.

How do the apps run on the N7?

I'm about to buy the tablet myself in a few days but everywhere and anywhere everyone and anyone says that Android doesn't have nearly as many tablet-optimised apps as the iPad. Do the apps run fine or not? I mean do they look good and is it easy to use them or not? Because for the iPad I know there's a separate category so there'll be apps for that.
So could someone confirm if the apps on this tablet run fine or not?
Thanks
They run crappy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Ok just my experience, on android many more apps are tablet optimized.
When I was using an ipad it seemed they were all small or had the option to 2x it making it blurry and horrid.
I guess though the Google play store just doesn't show you apps it they're not compatible though, which is fine because for an app that isn't compatible with tabs there are 10 others that are.
And poster above.. I have no words
Sent from my Optimus 2X using Tapatalk 2
My friend there are more apps in the play Store that you could ever use or even fit into the N7. With all the customizations you can make from OCing to roms the sky is the limit concerning the tablet. All the options that android offers will always keep apple in the rear view mirror.
Yes the apps are easy to access, start and run quickly.
Concerning apps and compatibility always use a browser to see all the apps and look at the comments to see if there are any made by N7 owners. Since I have modified the dpi on mine most apps come up as not available and that is when I check the comments. If it's something I want to buy I'll switch my dpi back to stock. It's a pain but I'm never giving up true tablet ui.

In my exp i've had by means of trade through best buy almost all of the most recent tabs. in order generic android tab eclair 1, archos 101, ipad, ipad 2, xoom acer a500, playbook, lenovo k1, hp touchpad, playbook again, xoom again, achos 80 g9, acer 501, and nexus 7. Android is my favorite. I also like web os and bb os. ios has better game selection hands down. Android has better free apps hands down bb web had no apps. so all depends on what you want it for
Well with all the quad-core machines coming out these days I'm quite sure there'll be loads of great games for Android too. The third post is interesting. So the apps don't seem like they're just multiplied in size. That's good to know. As long as they look natural I'm happy because the Appstore with all it's apps is horrible [my sister got an iPhone 4S the other day and I kept looking for apps and I wasn't THAT impressed. In fact the Play Store is MUCH better.]
I'm going with the Nexus and I'm sure I'll be a happy customer just like 95% of people who bought the thing. [the 5% are the people who're experiencing problems but even they were happy with their device.]
Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate it very much

Hows your Tablet after X amount of months?

Hey guys! I'm looking to buy an Nexus 10 in the next few weeks but I'd like to get some reviews or opinions on your guys experience after using it for some time now. I have a nexus 4 and am real into the android eco system and all but I also have an Ipad and am worried about the app selection. Do you guys find it lacking? ANyone else have an ipad to compare experiences? I love android but if all Im gonna be doing is using the chrome app then I might as well stick to the Ipad and not spend the extra money. What do you guys think? I use my Ipad for mostly media consumption, web browsing, flipboard, reading books & time magazine and other tablet magazine/newspapers, movies and music, and some productivity stuff. Help me out guys! Also if you have the 16 gig version, are you finding yourself out of space? I may opt for the 32gig.

After 4 months of using my Nexus 10 it's defiantly one of my favorite devices that I own, my friend was a hard core ipad user but he recently switched to a Nexus 10 and really likes it. As far as app wise, Android has come a long way in regards to tablet optimized app's and virtually all of the major app's are optimized for tablets. For media consumption I love using the Nexus 10 I often find myself watching Netflix on that at night because of the great screen over my TV. It's also great for regular movies, and tv shows you have loaded on and the speakers for music are quite loud for a tablet. Web browsing is great with chrome fast and smooth. I haven't tired flipboard personally so I can't comment on that unfortunately, for magazines and newspapers most seem to read nicely but a couple of them can be oddly formatted. For productivity, I use app's like Photo Editor and Sketchbook Pro for Tablets which all work well in usage experiences. As far as storage goes I have the 32 GB version and I am glad I went for it over the 16 GB because there is not sd-card slot it's better to have the storage capacity for when you need it rather then being frustrated when you run out of storage room.
I've also had it for 4 months. I'm a full time student and I find myself using my tablet every day as opposed to my computer. Honestly I didn't expect it to be as useful as it turned out to be. The only thing I can't use it for is advanced video editing. And the only thing that I prefer doing on my computer rather than Nexus is typing long essays. I don't actually have a tablet keyboard though so I imagine it would be much smoother with a physical keyboard and mouse.
As previously stated, my Nexus 10 is an awesome media device. I have a lot of 3D action games that I enjoy playing. Plus whenever I go a few days without my Nexus, I'm always blown away by how crisp the screen is when I come back. You never permanently get used to the high quality screen.

Just recently got my RT [Impressions]

So I picked up a Microsoft Certified Refurb Surface RT 32Gb for 279 over black friday and I have to say that I am absolutely in love with this device. Im a college student and this tablet fits my needs absolutely perfect. even decided to completely skip the jailbreaking and upgrade to windows 8.1 and I must say WHAT an improvement!!!! I thought the 8.1 upgrade on my desktop was stupid and pointless...but for this device it makes it into a beast.
There are a few problems here and there with apps crashing and the lack of more choices for apps is a little disheartening BUT I will say that theres nothing that Ive wanted to do so far that I couldnt do.
The defualt movie play plays my .r2ts bluray rips...flawless
Gomp is a google music app that gives you full range access to your google play music library (and has a very pretty interface )
UC Browser is pretty much IE with a bookmark dialer homepage and I love it
Netflix is freaking perfect
IM+ and Skype,Facebook and MetroTwit for all my chatting/social needs
Emulators for GBA GBC and SNES work perfectly and out of the box with a 360 controller
FULL OFFICE SUITE!!!!
IRC Explorer for all your IRC needs
Hands down i freakin love this device. Everyone constantly asks me "OH WOW WHAT IS THAT!?" because these things are like unicorns. No one out there has seen these things in real life. Even my foaming at the mouth hardcore apple/ipad friends were giving it the oooo's and aahhh's
Bottom line here is if you can pick one up for a reasonable price...DO IT! you wont be disapointed ^_^
Now once that 8.1 JB comes out Ill be set for life lol
I agree. I picked a 64 G RT and I kind of knew what to expect. But I am surprised how good this machine is..
To be honest it may be useful to have more apps, and the touch cover is not particularly good but I am super happy about it. Thanks for the apps reccomendations. I can advise to get "Code Writer" even if you are not a programmer. It is a fantastic full screen editor (Free)
The Surface RTs are nice, but they are severely hampered by microsoft's laughable app store. I don't think RT is going to be around for much longer, especially because you can now get a full x86 Win8 tablet for the same price. I have a Surface Pro and love it, but I just got the Dell Venue 8 Pro and it is pretty friggin' awesome.

I have three RT's. One is for myself. My two daughters use them happily at colleges. They are in graduate schools. After updating to 8.1 RT, we do not have any problem. We do not use a lot of apps nor games. I hope that the Microsoft would not give up ARM devices which have great potential to more people who consider finance being the main reason to get tablets of 10.1 to 11.6 inches with some applications (such as Office, social network, and browsing).
I only paid 169 for the 32gb and then $40 for a new touch cover on black Friday. I think this is a great value for me.
The touch cover will take time to adjust to, I'm improving, but not as quick as a mechanical board.

Just a reminder folks: There are forums for RT, and forums for Surface devices. This is neither; it's primarily about x86/x64 Windows 8.x, not Windows RT or any particular device running it.
