So I saw some discussion on this subject regarding the Nook Tablet but not specifically the Nook Simple Touch (or ST GlowLight).
My girlfriend recently received a Nook Simple Touch for her birthday. I'm pretty paranoid in general, so I'm a little concerned about using it without a screen protector of some sort. Mind you, I don't actually know if I should really even be concerned, but still.. paranoid. I'm curious to know if there's a particular screen protector that folks prefer. I've usually consulted popular opinion on these forums when purchasing accessories for phones but haven't really seen much talk about it for the Nook Simple Touch.

B&N says you should NOT use a screen protector on the glow. There's supposedly one "built in". I don't like the sound of it, but they say using one will damage the screen.

Hello everyone
I will be getting my HTC Desire HD very shortly what I would like to know is:
What is the best case and screen protector which are both durable and aesthetically pleasing available in the UK. (I'm quite careless with my phone. My phone also tends to hit the wall at a high velocity when I'm angry lol). I'm currently looking at the "Flexishield Skin Case" or the "Case-Mate Barely There".
What are the best apps available on android.
What tricks and tips do I need to know for the phone to get the most out of it?
Thanks in advance
Khuz360
If you tend to throw your phone when your angry, perhaps the DHD isn't for you. The screen is not gorilla/reinforced glass.
One phone where breaking the screen isn't a problem --> http://www.johnsphones.com/store/johns-phone-white/item24
Seriously though, I don't use a screen protector, just HTC's official leather case. No problems at all.
For case & protector check out the accessories section of the DHD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=764
for apps have a look at the apps section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=766
For throwing your DHD: have a look at www whowantstoinsuremyphone com
Haha to be fair I don't think I would be throwing the HDH. I have been taking my anger out on my phones alot less.
I've been thinking all along that Nexus 7 would have a capacitative touchscreen, like all modern quality tablets. Never did it cross my mind it could be the resistive, more crappy, kind found on many low budget Chinese tablets.
However the UBM TechInsights teardown threw off alarms on my head by showing two resistive screen controllers:
ELAN Microelectronics eKTF3624BWS – Controller for Resistive Touchscreen
ELAN Microelectronics eKTH1036BWS – Controller for the Resistive Touchscreen
Can someone already with the tablet confirm which kind it is and report back? I think a simple test is just trying to use the back of a regular pen.
If it works with the pen it's resistive, if not it's capacitative.
Thanks guys!
One thing Google DEFINITELY didn't and wouldn't skimp on is this.
Don't worry, it's a standard touch screen. Trust me, if it was resistive you'd know. The internet would be up n arms, and this tablet would NOT be successful.
Thanks elcapitaine, but after the MHL saga I'm hoping to be sure of this. The reviews have told us surprisingly very little about the the hardware side of things.
I was re-reading the Verge's review to see if they picked up anything and noticed this: "To my eyes, this is definitely a software problem, but I didn’t see similar issues on the Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean, so this will remain a question mark. Simply put, sometimes when you’re scrolling quickly (say, on the homescreen), the scroll will not follow your finger, and instead snap back the page to the one you were trying to move away from."
So users may be assuming that any inconsistent behaviour is down to software glitches, when in reality it's the touchscreen itself.
I'm really a bit worried about this.
i can absolutely guarantee you that it's capacitive.
if it was resistive then we would know from engadget, verge, ign, or one of any thousand blogs.
Can anyone now confirm this since it's actually out now? Saw some apple fanboy going on about how the N7 had a touch resistive screen on a blog at Engadget, but couldn't find much either way on the net. Can anyone do the pen test?
Because as much as I want the N7, a resistive touch screen would be sufficient to make suffer using this POS iPad 1 until the next go-around.
It's capacitive, this isn't 2002.
Sent from my Palm Pilot.

Lmfao I don't think you know how hard resistive screens are to use.. They're **** and have crap multi touch.
OF COURSE the N7 is capacative, it'd be worthy of the garbage bin if it wasn't. Even $100 Chinese tabs are capacative these days.

Lol. I know exactly how much a pain in the ass touch resistive is, thus my disinclination to purchase the N7 IF it truly did have a touch resistive screen.
Though I admit that TR screens have come a long way since we all learned to hate them on the early palm devices. Most of our high-end drafting tables for our engineers at my company use TR screens, because there are some legitimate benefits to having a resistive screen over a capacative screen when you're drafting. But I definitely don't want one on a tablet. At least until palms new TR/TC hybrid screens start gaining traction. I think then we'll start to see some neat haptic screen techniques that weren't possible before.
But thanks for assuring me the screen is TC. Think I'll purchase my N7 now (though I'd kill for a 3G variant...).
I now have both NST and NST with Glowlight. I want to just keep one of them and sell the other one. Now, as an absolute newcomer here, I'd like to know your thoughts about which one to keep is better for me for future. In terms of hacks and rooting? are all hacks that are for NST available for NST with Glowlight? Will the Glowlight screen break FOR SURE? <- so many negative comments! If it breaks I'd rather keep the simple NST!
P.S. I am a very very careful person when it comes to electronic devices I own.

How much the NST cost you? < £30? NSTG <£50 or £70? The light layer on NSTG glow is fragile. If you damage it you might as well not bother using the glow bit and it becomes another NST.
NSTG as a book reader is much more useful to me as I have to have lights quite high to make NST readable. My Glow however does stay at home, I use my phone for reading on the go.
Personally I am stocking up on NSTs. I don't believe B&N are going to be in business that much longer. Their books are more expensive than amazon who already is the market leader. They are not going to make enough money long term.
NST are the cheapest android device with exceptional battery life. I have so many uses in mind other than reading books and of for referring to Aard (One reason I did not think of other day to have large sdcard in NST).
Some examples being:
Droidmote client. Multitouch mouse for any android system that does not have touchscreen e.g. Ouya/Rikomagic sticks. Also supports Windows/linux.
Front end for home automation/Media remote.
Tailing (Displaying) my kernel messages from my linux box.
rs232 / ssh client when working on Network devices which I do a lot. Trying to get hold of a very low power rs232 adapter that hopefully NST can power directly.

Thanks for the reply Crispy.
I have never seen a product with so many negative reviews even on their own website!!! See for yourself: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-simple-touch-with-glowlight-barnes-noble/1108046469 That's horrible!
Only thing I am worried is after the cracks, even when the glowlight is off, it wouldn't be as readable as Nook ST without Glowlight!!! ?
Well, I got it for 65$ and I'm lowering my expectation on Glowlight, maximum 2 weeks of enjoying before it breaks!
Plus, looking at how quiescent the Developer's forum has become recently, I believe you're right... Nook (if not B&N as a whole) is having a slow death, unfortunately.
P.S. I wonder if there is anything, we as customers, can do on our NSTwG that can avoid the cracks? Like any custom made hacks, tips and modifications? I was reading somewhere and many of the knick white spots are the result of the gap between actual e-Ink and the light glass, not sure if that makes sense, as I have yet to receive mine in post!!!

I dont think they are quite that fragile it would nof be cost effective to produce.
They glowlight works by light at top using natural properties of the glass to light the screen. So if u get any stress points ie pits on the glass u will get bright spots. As as u dont thump screen, twist/bend, drop keyz on it from great height then it will b fine. Buy on credit card if u wonder if y9ur seller will not honour warrenty.
Sorry for typos using android tab crappy keyboard
There's a huge hole in the layer that distributes the light on the front, rendering the device almost unusable. The screen is too dark to use without the light for the most part, so there's no point owning this device anymore.
Is there anything I can do? I can't really afford to replace this device and it's the only way I can read books, as I'm never able to get comfortable with a lighting source. Can I send it somewhere for repair?

You can buy glowlight e-Ink for your Nook from eBay and replace it yourself, for instance look here: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Original-6-Inch-Display-For-Nook-Simple-Touch-With-GlowLight-Screen-Replacement-/231041616939?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35cb274c2b&_uhb=1
You can also just go and buy a second hand NSTwG but depending on your luck, same thing might or might not happen. I have my NSTwG and I care for it, so far no major thing has happened to it.
Best device for reading in my opinion is Kindle Keyboard with lighted case (I know you said you don't want external light but just sayin')

As I said, I have not had Nook without Glowlight.
You can buy this lighted cover, but I don't have first hand experience with it:

Getting NSTwG is risky, many people have reported it to break within months. Mine has been ok so far!!! I'm not very careful with it though, I treat it like I treat my K3, and I have found it to be a very good reliable reader. Now, again, in my opinion, the best eReader so far is simple rock solid Kindle Keyboard. I won't trade it with newer Kindles or Nooks for reading. I got Nook just to play with Android stuff, but still K3 remains my main eReader. The combination of NSTwG + K3 has worked best for me. I carry both of them with me wherever I go, one for casual or night reading (NSTwG), the other for serious reading (K3).
It's your decision... Good luck.
Hey XDA :good::laugh:
I found myself having less and less time to read and caught myself abandoning my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight lately.
My job requires me to read technical non-fiction books all day long and we got access to the PDFs. I mainly used my Nook to read epubs and news feeds, which nowadays (sadly) rarely happens.
I thought it might be a good idea to ask here, as a lot of like-minded Nook users are around. And maybe someone is looking for a solid device.
The software version is 1.2.0, model number BNRV350. It is rooted and works flawless.
It is in super mint condition, as I treat my technology very well.
I've got all the accessories, booklets and the original packaging.
Just shoot me a direct message or ask in this thread.
I guess we'll figure out the cheapest way for shipment and come to an agreement regarding the price.
I hope I can find my Nook a good new home
Cheers
With what rooting package is this device rooted?
Is this device equipped with Google apps?
What is the physical condition of this device?
I rooted it over a year ago...I think I used touchnooter.
Is there a way to quickly check?
Yes Goole apps worked fine...I actually used it for my calendar an gmail from time to time.
And had Evernote, Dropbox, Dropsync and Read it Later installed, along with a bunch of reader apps (especially the Kindle app).
The condition is mint, no wear worth mentioning.
I don't think there is, but that's alright.
Just to make sure, the screen is 100% intact, right? Because a lot of Glows have had screen problems.

What's exactly the issue?
I haven't noticed anything, so I guess it's fine.
I managed to find some old photos I took during the rooting process (I think I already knew that I would forget :angel.
I used "GabrialDestruir's Touch and Glow Nooter CWM", hence CWM 5.0.2.7 is running.
The known issue that is specific to NSTwG is "screen tear". It is light leakage through scratches or torn gaps in light dispersing layer. It looks like this: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rCLwlgMFtfY/U-dJe53T9zI/AAAAAAAAFcc/GKvfiL2P_lk/s800/IMGP9221.JPG or http://the-digital-reader.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/broken-nooklit-2-500x500.jpg . In most cases it is almost invisible with light turned off, but some devices I've seen had very annoying cracks, that made reading unpleasant. This is how affected device looks like with glowlight off and on - link to the gallery: https://picasaweb.google.com/110611895739392246996/NookSTGlowlight?authkey=Gv1sRgCK-H4-ua55mcKg# .

Thank you so much :good:
Those illuminated eInk readers all use a diffusion layer on top of the actual screen. Those teared spots look a lot like they collapsed under punctual pressure, for example when carrying the device in a bag carelessly.
My device is fine
Yes, the idea is common, but it seems that in NSTwG B&N have used material more susceptible to damage than its competitors.
That kind of damage may have a few different causes. You can choose between scratching, pressing or bending the device. That last option will cause serious, long cracks and/or slight wrinkles. It looks like this (and that's the one annoying example I mentioned in the previous post): https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FXi1QOXgdX0/U-n-Jgsti-I/AAAAAAAAFd0/Qz_Tg8wDPU0/s900/IMG_0765.JPG and https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jRdMBOMTBNc/U-n-Jk4CARI/AAAAAAAAFd4/hRfIayia6NU/s900/IMG_0766.JPG . This is my backup one, and one day I may downgrade it to Nook Simple Touch without Glowlight by removing the dispersion layer. It is possible, and I accidentally did it a bit already in another unit when I tried to separate the bezel from the screen assembly.
Okay, I guess the Nook has to stay in my house, as the girlfriend recently discovered Pocket.
I didn't know...she might ditch her kindle paperwhite in favor for my nook.
She caught me fiddling around with it again and now can't let go of it.
I didn't even know she was using Pocket...and by far not that she had collected slightly over 1000 articles there. (Holy cow!)
