[Q] Best OS? - Mogul, XV6800 General

Hello,
I have had my HTC/Verizon xv6800 for over 3 weeks now. I think it is impressive for its age, but would like a better OS/GUI as it seems a little "clunky".
I have researched what is already out there, but the shear volume of versions is daunting, which is why I am seeking help hear as I am a noobie to this sort of thing.
When I bought it off ebay, there was someone selling a WM6.5 version (of course I can't find it now). It looked like it had more visuals and apps than I need, but it was closer to what I would like. I would rather have a lighter, faster OS and GUI.
I would like to keep all the basic capabilities, but more of a finger-friendly (than stylus-friendly) interface. Stable, light, easy-maintenance are the priorities.
Thank you for your help.

Sorry Magician it's time for an upgrade.

I'm obsessed with having the latest tech and greatest and my poor Magician is beginning to feel a bit too dated. I'm looking to upgrade to a new windows mobile device within the next couple months and I'd like to get some suggestions.
Points to consider:
I don't like, want, or need a keyboard. To me that's just unnecessary bulk. I am a graffiti master. (I won't rule out devices with keyboards as long as they don't add too much bulk)
This also means I want a device as small as the magician.
I hate smartphones, so no MotoQs, BlackJacks, etc.
I need QuadBand.
I'd like a speedy device, the faster the better, battery life is unimportant cause I rarely talk on my phone and I'm never far from a charger.
Wifi would be nice but not a deal breaker.
Other than that I'll take any suggestions.
Just bought a Hermes yesterday. Feels fast enough, same form-factor as my Magician (just a little thicker), quad-band, wifi etc. Must say I like the keyboard very much, although switching between characters, numbers & symbols could've been more intuitive.
Looks like all my favorite apps work very well on the Hermes too & I expect an official WM6 by HTC to be released soon. Course one can experiment today with all the marvelous developments being presented on the various boards.
Wish you a wise moment, cause when you're not in the position of trying & buying all the new devices it's a very hard decision to make.
Cheers, M
i tryed htc 3600 for a while, its not bad... gps, wifi, better camera, same speed, but... wm5, so no memory managment...
Im back on the s100.

Your Thoughts and Opinions Please

Hi all,
I have been using WM devices for a few years now and I guess you could say that I'm not really all that impressed. I started with the wizard and then the tytn/hermes. I have flashed roms numerous times and find the whole ordeal to be a bit tiring. It was somewhat of an adventure at first, but after a while I just want a phone that works right and doesn't take much work.
Is the X1 that phone? Is it a straight WM6 rom or has SE made its own enhancements to it? For a guy who just wants the phone to work well right out of the box and not to mess with it a whole lot, might this be the phone for me?
I very much appreciate any opinions you might share.
I have had my first WM device X1 for only about 4 months, but I totally agree. I had SE W960 (with UIQ) for a year and I'm getting tired from all that modding-and-still-not-working, too.
But on the topic, X1 has some SE things like the panels and panel manager, phone interface, from R3A firmware SW keyboard and xtrakt game and maybe some other stuff. Although I don't own X1 for too long, but basing on what I read about WM and my own xperience, I think X1's original ROM is stable, fast, without serious bugs and generally well optimized. I'm currently using R2AA008 UK ROM, R2AA010 is said to be even better. So I think X1 will satisfy your needs without too much modding. But it's still WM, you can't avoid it completely.
Just to share one thought, I'm seriously thinking about buying a high-end SE dumb phone as a secondary to X1, it might solve your problem as well
The X1 will perform pretty well out of the box (or at least with the latest official update) but it can also run better with some of the ROM's/MOD's available on this forum. So to answer your question yes this phone will be a good out of the box performer, and the option to mod will always be here should you reattain your thirst for adventure.
I ve had 2 WM phones over the past 3 years. They were very buggy, and required much effort, with custom ROMs, just to to make them decent. Especially my latest one (MIO A701) has never reached a decent level of usability, no matter the very good custom ROMs, due to crappy OEM drivers, which were never updated, by Mitac. BTW, the worst user support I've ever experienced.
X1 is a different animal. There are almost no bugs in the latest official ROM R2AA010.
As long as you just only do a couple of adviced performance tweaks, located easily at this site and you only use official tested & stable apps, most probably you will not face any issue.
Now, if you start messing with beta / experimental / brand new / cool staff then you'll have to invest some effort fixing here and there, but, after all, it's your decision and responsibility.
Personally, I would like to fall into the 2nd category; I somehow like the game; but I can't really do it extensively, because no free time.
But it's good that we have the choice, thanks to this site.
To make your answer very simple - No.
You will need to flash ROMs to make it a good phone. Out of the box, it's best would be ok.

+1. Even I hate iPhone for it's lack of functionalities and limitation. If all your need is out of the box experience and you don't want to spend time w/ WM. iPhone is probably a better choice for you.
Thanks for the input, guys. I actually don't mind flashing a rom once. Twice, would rather not. Three times, definitely not.
Does anyone have experience with the Tytn/hermes? How do you think this device performs compared to that?
My previous phone was a TYTN II (tilt). I find the xperia far superior. It's faster, less buggy, easier to navigate, and has more cool features than the TYTN. The hardware is sleeker and of higher quality. I can hardly stand to do anything with my tilt after using the xperia.
And as far as flashing a ROM to the xperia - I found it quite easy and quick, and somehow less complicated than flashing a tilt.

Same here. But I do missed some nice design of Tytn II. The "tilt" design for reading while eating. Easy to take out the sim and sd card
I think X1 is the best phone I ever have
not a out of box best winmo.. u need to have xperia tweaks, spb shell, touch keyboard etc etc

Some queries about the HD2

Okay, I'm seriously looking into getting a HD2 next month, however some of the negatives about this device concern me.
For one the speed doesn't always seem to be up to scratch compared to other Snapdragon devices (though it sports the same processor). Is it really that much of an issue? Is the HD2 still fast enough for most/all tasks? Also I've seen keyboard lag mentioned a fair bit too, a small issue, or not?
The next issue would be the pink hue I've seen on just about every sample image from the HD2, I know this is an ongoing thing and no one seems to have narrowed it down to either a software or hardware fault. Is it really that bad? Also I've seen very little shots from the HD2 that look even decent quality.
Thirdly is Windows Mobile, now I am aware of a lot of people that prefer Windows Mobile to Android, but again is it really that much of a deal breaker? I see a lot of people saying the HD2 hardware with an Android would be a match made in heaven, and that concerns me as I do not want to be left disappointed.
Basically I would like some views from both sides and someone to confirm whether this truly is the best phone I could buy, or whether I should look elsewhere, taking the above issues into account.
Thanks.
Hey,
I hope to get my HD2 next week but I have had some play time with a Demo unit and it was super fast and very smooth, think Iphone but much better. To quote comic book guy “Best phone ever” well in my opinion anyway.
I would always pick WM over Android, you can do so much more with WM.
There does seem to be a small but vocal group who are hell bent on making the HD2 out to be a bad phone or in some way crippled by HTC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583618
Hmm, have one now for over a week:
1. Speed - really fast and better than iphone, especially when you take into account the multiple applications at once.
2. Keyboard lag - super fast, could actually do with a slow down !
3. Pink hue - no idea about that, my screen is really excellent
4. WM vs Android - no comment, WM has been around for longer
Obviously I wasn't clear with the pink hue, I was meaning a pink hue in photo's taken with the HD2's Camera.
But thanks for the reassurance guys, keep 'em coming.
Oh, I see what "pink hue" is from your view now.
Well, HTC have never really been able to make super a quality camera function. But, the HD2 camera is OK and quick. I have not noticed a pink hue but I also would not claim to be an image expert. Nice thing on the HD2 (compared to the HD) is finally a LED flash.
But, I doubt anyone buys this as a top quality camera and, of course, no one buys an iphone as a camera either !
I'll have a play with some flash images - it would not surprise me if the LED is screwing up the colour balance.
Thanks for that Dave. I'm still very much undecided, to be honest I was 100% for getting the HD2 till I read some of the problems on the forum here. Now I'm not so sure.
The problem with reading problems on a forum is that for the most part, that's what most people come on a forum to do. Nowhere for even the most amazing device will you find more "wow" posts than "omg it sucks" posts. The majority are from people who didn't research their purchase properly. Even for what is supposed to be a developer-centric site, there is an enormous number of ignorant and unintelligent people.
It's a fantastic device, and the performance is so far ahead of my previous WM devices it's not funny. The pink middle on photos is a problem that seems to be affecting a few units (not mine), but it'll either be fixed by a ROM update or else according to HTC you can return for a replacement.
WM vs. Android is a completely personal choice. You might as well ask us what colour shoes you should wear. What do YOU prefer?
I read many post before buying the HD2, most probably I was in the same state of mind you are.
Having done a huge mistake with the SEX1, I risked my money on another WM. Have to say I'm more than pleased with this beast.
It's fast, very fast, had a ton of applications which were sucking out a lot of memory and not in one instance had I experienced lag. It was only when I went in Task manager that I realised how many applications were running. Apparently, the applications will only close when the required memory exceeds the available memory, I stand to be corrected.
Reception is excellent, far better than my SEX1.
Sound quality is impressive, again far better than the SEX1. My system volume is set at 55% and when playing music on the speaker the sound quality is very good and quite loud. Apparently when the phone senses that it's in a case it automatically increases the volume, you defo won't be having problems there.
Battery life is an issue, but it could well give you a day, for me it's not a decisive issue as the phone is connected to the pc every evening.
Camera could have been better, but then again its a phone, and hence all phones, be it 5,9,12 megapixel, will never be excellent photo takers.
Overall, I think that this phone deserves 8/10. It could well be improved with some ROM updates but the GUI, Manilla, is excellent. I love it!!
I have just recently ditched my Google G1. Whilst I enjoyed Android, I think that the Sense GUI on the HD2 is a lot better. The screen is just miles, miles better.
I was worried about the text input side of things - I have always preferred hard keyboards hence the G1. But having got used to the soft keypad of the HD2 I think it is fab.
Overall (and so far!) I would give the HD 2 a rather fantastic 9/10....LOVE IT!
Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. I guess I still really need to think this through, but I think your input will make the decision easier.
Hello
I've used HTC for years since opening my eyes past the Nokia and Sony Ericsson stuff so had the Vario 2 and 3 and then loved the touch hd (blackstone). Finally went for an Android with the release of the Hero as it got such rave reviews and phone of the year etc...
Basically it depends what your priorities are to be honest. My overview of the phones are these:
HERO = Great user friendly device with simple layout, all makes sense and is easy to use and does everything well although nothing is outstanding. Great allround phone for the medium - high end user. Apps are unbeatable for ideas, functionality, price (or lack of as hundreds possibly thousands are free!) and generally GOOD phone. Fun, functional and well priced. Camera is naff!
HD2 = Not so user friendly although it makes sense to the experienced user but very serious piece of kit. Not as fun but very customisable and powerful, superb speed, good amount of cabs out there and assistance from some of the geniuses knocking around on this site etc. They can help you do pretty much anything you want to it. I personally love this phone more than any other phone i've ever used but i like the windows thing even though the marketplace is a con and expensive and very empty still (i know it's newish but they shouldve at least launched with a decent selection ready for people as incentive!). The screen is outstanding, the camera is much better now that HTC have discovered that Flashes exist! Still not on a par with Samsung or Sonys but its a balance in a product so priorities again. The Sense and Touchflo is great, future rom potentials is there too.
If you want a gimmicky (although good) app based fun phone get the Hero, if you want a serious power-smartphone get the HD2 and customise away.
HTC are such a great non mainstream company (in Joe Publics eyes not us gadget lovers) but i feel with phones like the Hero they really are gonna be a main player in less than 3 years as long as they keep their superb efforts up!!!
Good luck!
Well this thread has been very useful to read I'm trying to decide between iphone 3GS or HTC touch HD2. Would love to find a phone that doesn't lag ...
Do people still feel the same way 3 months later - have HTC come out and fixed any problems? Does the HD2 start to lag after its been in use for a while - or is it still really smooth for people?
Sorry if there are other threads that answer these questions ... links to any similar discussions would be good if that's the case.

Windows Mobile.

Hello all,
I've had my TD2 for 4 months now and to be honest I am fed up of the amount of problems I've had with it, WITH NO SOLUTIONS!
I don't care about getting solutions anymore, even HTC couldn't help with most.
I think I will now just wait for a new phone to come out (THAT ISN'T WINDOWS MOBILE) because the problems are out weighing the good parts about this phone by quite a bit. I think Android may be alright. We'll see. But I cannot take how hard the phone is to use! IT'S SO SLUGGISH!
Here's the list of some problems I've had/got:
*Battery "Last Charge" notification not working.
*Music not playing in standby (Not a bug but still ****ing annoying.)
*EXTREME SLUGGISHNESS!
*Wi-Fi not connecting after standby!
Does anyone else feel the same?
Luke.
I'm a little confused about why you're posting, if you're so determined to move to another platform. I'm also wondering what you'll do when you discover the weaknesses of whichever other platform you move to (in my experience none of them are perfect!)
Your list of (presumably the most annoying) four problems is interesting. I had noted that the last charge notification doesn't work, but personally don't find that too big an issue as long as I can see how well charged the phone is. I have got pretty used to how long a charge will last me (much longer than on many phones I've had before).
Personally, again, I find the TD2 much more responsive than some phones I've used, and the good things about the phone - for me, but clearly not for you - outweigh the few niggles. I need the synchronisation with MS Office - hence I like WM, I also like the style, size and weight of the Topaz, compared with other WM phones I've had.
Enjoy your new phone when you get it.
And a good tip... No WM, no Android, but a basic Nokia. Very fast, good battery-feedback and most important... No possibility to do something wrong with it...
Serious, if you don't like WM, than you have to go for something else... At the same moment that's gonna be good for us... One useless-topic-opener less...
Good luck with the new phone.
Well to be honest, the sluggishness is the biggest problem, I can live with the rest if I have responsiveness. I get so frustrated at paying so much for a phone that's so slow.

Flash a custom rom. Start reading the stickys in the "ROM Development"-section. After some days you can flash the rom of your choise... But it's very important the read a lot before, so you don't gonna break your device...
Happy reading, happy flashing...
Thanks, I'll take a look a custom roms

X2 - Need some opinions

Alright. I had the X1 as my main phone for a decent amount of time. Year and a half or two maybe (decent for me, I go through a new phone every six months). But it recently fell beyond repair and I switched to the nexus one, figuring it would be a good place to jump into that whole android world. I do like that world too, however, I miss windows mobile and I miss my Xperia. Now with the X2 floating around, I have a few questions.
1. Does anyone have any prolong Xperiance with the x2?
2. What are the major Cons?
3. What are the major improvements (user opinion) over the x1. Not just the spec list, but look and feel, and help online, roms, etc etc.
4. Would it be worth trading my nexus one for? I miss having a keyboard, and I want TV - out.
5. Lastly, TV - Out, is it horribad?
I didn't seen a x2 forumn, so I posted here, move if necessary. Thanks!
i havent had experience with it, but i know the keyboard on the X2 is much better in look and feel. i want one myself
Pros: It adds 8M camera and has a flush screen. Accelerometer. Nice new Panel interface
Cons: No conventional D-pad. Little support from XDA-Devs. High price.
I don't feel like the X2 has enough benefit to upgrade. If it was less expensive and had XDA-Dev support (it doesn't because it is not an HTC-made device so it has very different software) I would be looking to get one. Using the same processor and RAM certainly makes it harder for me to justify getting one. I'd say get a nice cheap X1 and save up for the next top-shelf model. IF you must upgrade perhaps an HD2.
P.S. I have not had hands-on time with the X2, just YouTube vids and tech reviews so my opinion is only semi-informed.
ive had the X2 for a couple months. price is no different to the X1 when it came out so id consider it no more or less expensive (and if you sell on your existing X1 then the cost to upgrade is cut in half) i got mine from ebay for £375.
ill warn you of the cons first...
battery life for me is quite bad but i can live with it. the X1 wasnt that great for me to be honest so im kind of used to it. expect to charge it daily.
at the moment the firmware isnt quite up to scratch but once again its no worse than the X1 was when i first had it. theres a firmware update due this month so hopefully that will sort a lot of the problems.
loss of the dpad, but you get used to it. i find i use the touchscreen more anyway.
as mentioned before, no support for XDA-devs so if youre into replacing roms every five mins youll be dissappointed. but a lot X1 software still works on the X2, just not everything.
the hardware inside is the same as the X1 so dont expect any major speed improvements when using software. but i was happy enough with the speed of the X1 anyway so not a problem for me.
currently theres no front camera for videocalling and no FM radio support but these will both be activated in the forthcoming update.
Pros.
construction is far superior. back to the quality i expect from sony.
i find the overall design much better and more attractive. the curved back makes it look smaller and less of a brick even though its near enough the same size. side by side with my X1 it makes the X1 look very dated indeed.
keyboard has a very nice feel to it. ive not used it long enough to detect any problems but im more confident it will last.time will tell of course. the keys arent squidgy or crunch when pressed. when its opened it feels reassuringly tight as it slides and snaps into place. the x1 felt more sloppy and when opened didnt feel all that sturdy.
the screen is a tiny bit larger but is much clearer and sharper. its also flush with the body which a lot of people wanted.
it currently has wm 6.5 and soon to have wm 6.5.2 and then wm 6.5.3 in a couple of months.
the overall experience is much better. the X1 always felt to me that it was a pocketpc with a phone tacked on as an afterthought. the X2 has a much better dialer and phone interface. feels like a proper phone now.
improved camera, ive not used it much but seems better from the few times ive used it. (although the multishot function doesnt work, id imagine this is one of the bug fixes in the upcoming update)
ive not used the tvout so cant really comment, not something id use to be honest.
i liked my X1 but it was falling apart, so im pleased i upgraded to the X2. if you wish to return to the xperia experience then i think you would be happy, just dont expect any major upgrades. consider it more of an X1.5 and then you wont be dissappointed. between a cheap X1 and the more expensive X2 then id definately recommend the X2 (unless the X1 was very very cheap of course.lol) dont pay any more than £400 ($700) theres plenty available for less than that price.

nice to hear from an x2 owner, wanted to ask about the included earphones sound quality, is it any good and could you recommend a place one could be got for less than 400£
the included headphones arent too bad. depends how much of an audiophile you are! theyre the in ear type but not the ones that go deep into your ear. i actually kept hold of the X1 headphones as i was used to them. but sound wise theyre very similar. i thought it would be better to sell on unused headphones with my x1. i found the sound quality was much better using pocketplayer rather than the supplied media player. pocket player has dsp plugins with bass boosters and equalizers etc. sony of course are famous for the walkman brand so do know a tiny bit about music lol. they wouldnt package anything too cheap and nasty. i would say theyre a decent mid range set and personally im quite happy with the sound quality. the x2 has a standard 3.5mm jack of course so you can always use a different set of headphones.
i got my X2 from ebay. theres plenty on there right now for just under £400. i was lucky to get one privately which was about £50 cheaper than the rest. i dont think they knew the value of what they where selling
this one is currently £370
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-Ericsson...MobilePhones_MobilePhones?hash=item335b24f895
theres plenty of others for around £389 - 399. most from hongkong though but they do tend to give away some free goodies. theres currently an X2 on auction for around £200 but i think its a used one.
thanks for the information on the earphones and also the ebay listings. good to hear the audio quality is decent. hopefully i'll get my hands on one soon.
Me finally and hopefully this week.
lol i hope i havent bigged up the headphones too much if youre going to listen to music then hunt down pocketplayer... its not too hard to find theres a big difference in the sound quality compared to wmp and looks very good when its full of albums with the cover art. probably my top recommended software for any wm phone to be honest.
Haha. Thanks for all the thoughts... Though I still can't decide. I LOVED my X1. It did fall apart however. The earpiece stopped working, (had to do calls on speakerphone or bluetooth). Then the flash stopped working for a little, but I managed to fix that. Recently it stopped working again. Whats funny is the case is cracked up, and stuff isn't working, but the screen (with no screen protecter EVER) Is still pristine.
X2 should be just as awesome, though I like the whole changing roms thing, and xda has been so helpful with my x1. I do like my Nexus one and the whole 1ghz processor and android has been fun. Though I think I may trade it for the x2 to help cover the cost We'll see. If any of you all are interested in that trade, send me a PM. I'm not quite set on it yet, but it's possible.

What are the downsides to Android compared to WM 6.5.5? A lot of are thinking of making the jump now that WP7 sounds like a half-ass iPhone. Any thoughts?

Well, and I read this a lot, noticed it with my nexus, android doesn't seem quite as mature as winmo, and a lot of the good stuff requires a rooted phone which of course voids the warranty. Everything I ever used the phone was there though (phone, message, email, gmail (two different apps, wasn't streamlined, didn't have an issue though), web access (no flash yet), games (always love all of gamevils games i'll pay for em), and ftp access to my webserver.) I didn't like androids soft keyboard when compared to my old iphone 3gs. Game selection wasn't all that great, but apps were still solid, many of them at least. Other then that though, no issues. I think I've tried every Mobile OS on at least a few phones except a few, and Android is definitely tied up there with windows mobile.
