GSM Radio direct communication - Networking

Hi,
What knowledge is available in using the GSM radio transceiver in the mobile for direct connection to another mobile, bypassing the network? Is there any work done on reversing the modem ROM in any device? Specially the Samsung ones, which have lots of open code.
Thanks.

The 'open code' on Samsung (or any) smartphone does not pertain to the GSM radio firmware. And your ability to get in and muck with the GSM radio/firmware is very limited - they really don't want you playing with that.
I don't believe that what you want to do is possible - GSM just isn't made for that - but if it is then your best approach would be to get a GSM software radio. Try searching on "Universal Software Radio Peripheral".

Can XDA2 OR iMate be changed to CDMA? (usa: 1900Mhz)

Can the bandswitch.exe app be used to enable this radio interface?
thanks,
[email protected]
I believe that xda2 is triband so can do 900/1800/1900.
If it can do 1900, is this accessible using the bandswitch.exe ?
Also is it the same 1900 used in the states (usa) ?
[So if someone was travelling EU to USA, one could call up this
opened up tab section on the pda and then select something
compatible with either system....EU=gsm and USA=cdma. ??
XDA II is tri-band GSM, w/c you can use anywhere in the world who has GSM coverage. CDMA is a different kind of network. I believed that is US/North America the provider using it are Sprint and Verizon, if I am not mistaken. GSM network are used by T-mobile, Cingular and now AT&T is converting also from TDMA to GSM.
And the answer is NO, you cannot use XDA II to a CDMA network. You have to change hardware parts of it. BUT yes you can used it to 1900 network in the US w/c is GSM.

Hope this help!

Right. Within a few years however there will be phones where the entire radio transceiver is handled in software, and where changing system is indeed just a software upgrade.
(And then with some extra software your phone could also be a police scanner, family radio, marine radio, GPS receiver, Iridium/Thuraya/Inmarsat phone, GSM jammer/base station/IMSI-catcher, spread spectrum low-probability-of-detection military radio or celldar unit. Fun!)

Frequncies on phones

Hi all,
Sorry if this sounds daft, but I have just been given the tech assult by a Telstra Australia guy.
Telstra uses a "Next G" network that used 850MHz and will state that ONLY phones bought through them will be able to fully utilise the network. Is this a firmware thing (IE, can I flash the radio rom) or a hardware thing? If I bought a device from anywhere else would I be able to utilise the speed of the "Next G" network? If not, what features would we be missing?
Cheers
Al
Frequncies is a hardware thing
some phones support that band as it's also used in usa you can check the wiki for the phone in question
if you have a quad band phone with 850 MHz, it should work ontelestra, the only features that might not work on it are features that have been cooked into the rom. Phone and generic features will work as the are standard to all hardware types.
If your phone is 3g capable, yes you will be able to use their updated 3g as the attachment to allow their network to work on your phone will be on a telstra sim card.

Telstra NextG Suitable Rom

Most of the Roms I have tried(lots) all seem to have different radio bands available, I assume to suit the country/location of origin. My question is what Rom would be suitable for the GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(850+2100) which is what I believe to be the full Telstra spectrum. All the roms work OK but as I venture into the outback on a regular basis the NextG(UMTS850) is a must. The full Telstra spectrum is what I need to enable my best chances of reception. Without flashing roms is there a way to determine what bands/combinations are available as flashing is always a worrying process. If not can someone suggest a Rom? My reason for needing another suitable rom is due to locking limitations when another carriers sim is installed. I don't mean simlock but lockout of other providers data/sms and other services, limitation of band selection and others.
goldfinger, if I understand, are you looking at the band frequencies in phone settings and looking for a rom that has the complete Telstra combination GSM/UMTS on one line? My T8285 has Dutty's latest Holy Grail rom, but indeed there is no way to get that combination with one setting. Have you tried setting your Network type and Band Frequency to "Auto" and just let the phone find the appropriate signal strengths and settings for the area? Your phone is capable of that combination whether or not the rom has the correct combination as an option. Outside of the Telstra Rom, I haven't seen a rom with what you are looking for, or for that matter, what I would be looking for either, so I just keep it set on auto and it has never failed to get what I need.
The phone works fine on auto with most of the roms in the cities but without the full Telstra Spectrum there will always be limitations to receiving the strongest signal and as I mentioned I do a lot of fringe area driving so the NextG is important. The standard Telstra Rom Has the following band listings:
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
GSM(1900)+UMTS(850)
GSM(900+1800+UMTS(850+2100)****
GSM(900+1800)+(UMTS(850)
The third band is the complete spectrum.
Where are the bands added in the roms?
I see what you're saying and unfortunately I don't think bands are added. It's just like you said, the roms used by the cooks are area specific because they are area specific releases by HTC. So, essentially it's out of our hands and up to HTC what band settings are included. Ideally, you would need a cooked rom using a Telstra based rom to get the frequencies you need. Now, I'm unsure if you can physically add the combination you need. Perhaps someone out there may know the answer to that. Are you still running the Telstra radio and rilphone, which if I recall I believe it was 1.10. I wish I could be more help to you.
The current Telstra Rom uses Radio 1.14.25.24 and I have also tried updating to 1.17.25.09 but this does not affect the bands at all. They appear to be rom specific as you said. Looks like I may have to learn how to dissassemble the Telstra Rom and cook my own rom with the correct bands. Hate all the telstra branding and limitations using the original rom. I think I better start reading.
Thanks for you help anyways Sean3.

[Q] Radio Question - I couldn't figure out yet

Hello,
I have been reading about HTC Vision Radio around posts here (For both the G2 and the D-Z).
I saw that that the hardware specs for the Radio bands are different between the 2 models and that people can actually flash the Radios from both models into the G2 device (Which I own).
Considering I use an Israeli operator that has 3G network only (known that its bands are 850/2100 here), My question is - Does updating the Radio for my device is actually controlling the bands I can use with it ???
In other words, The main Radio circuit supports all bands and then the Radio Firmware locks it to use the specific band for the specific operator ? (i.e. T-Mobile) ...
I would love to know if that's true, so I definitely need to upgrade/update to a working Radio for my operator since I know right now I'm using only the 2100 Band and I'm getting real reception issues.....
Thanks in advanced,
Amir.
You're asking whether changing radios can change the bands used by the device for calling/data? If so than no it can't, flashing a different radio can't change a Tmo G2 to use at&t 3g bands etc... That's pure hardware.

radio verion

is any radio version compatible with any rom, and what is the difference between at&t and international versions of the atrix. I got my mobile from the US and I am using vodafone Egypt...... does this make me an international or us
So far as I know, the radio version is independent of the rom. So you could have an international Atrix with the proper radio for your version as well as the proper kernel, and a US rom. Most roms do not touch the radio.
When people speak of different versions of the Atrix, they are referring to where the phone was purchased. The us version is slightly different than the rest of the world, and as such requires a different Kernel.
If your version is an AT&T version from the US, then you would use the us based kernel and radio.
so I am a US model...... Can I flash a radio that is not meant for at&t.... as your answer meant that I can but the last sentence in your reply says I cannot
I am shopping around for another radio as I have problems with 3G connectivity. I cannot have data connection whatever I do and I removed the apns and restored defaults and made new ones with the proper settings, turned 2g and 3g on and off and tried putting it in the flight mode and changing the settings for GSM only or GSM prl auto and all the other settings with no effect.
does the us version uses different frequency I checked my operator and found that they are using UMTS 2100 MHz
do you have any ideas............ I ran out of them

before flashing the radio did you make sure your apn is set up properlY?
yes I did and used 2 sim cards from 2 different operators working with the same apn settings flawlessly on other phones (blackberry torch and htc touch diamond 2)
I think, thought I may be incorrect, that you need to stick with the at&t radio if your on the at&t phone? Maybe someone who knows more than me can chime in?
I was just meaning that the radio is a separate thing from the ROM that you have on the phone.
The atrix supports 2100 mhz, so I suspect if you are having problems that it is connected to your APN settings.
When you are in the APN menu, did you try resetting to default before adding your APN? I usually have to do that on mine before I can get data to work properly.
