Just read an article yesterday saying the same thing, then there was a reply from a Sony Rep saying that Xperia PLAY is still on track for ICS, and that the reason for the missing Xperia PLAY from the list was due to a typo. I am trying to find the article now and will post the link here, but the Rep said that the PLAY was totally getting ICS. The Xperia Arc S and Neo have the same and or similar specs and that there was no reason that the PLAY would not get it.
This is not the article but still wanted to post. Read the last two posts, claiming that a VZ Rep told them that ICS was coming sometime in June/July to R800x....(I smell BullSh!t)
exactly what i thought too.. the play has the same specs as the ray, arc, and neo
sigh
and if they keep telling us the XPlay won't run ICS as good as it runs GB, then why the hell a lower-end phone such as the upcoming Xperia Tipo (at 800MHz and Adreno 200) is getting ICS when it's released? that means the Xplay can handle it well...

Absoultely agree, Tipo has ancient hardware, 3 years old at least for the GPU
Some people argue that the Xperia Play performs worse on ICS when it comes to gaming. Maybe that´s the reason. I´ve read an article on droidgamers.com where the ICS Beta for Xperia Play had problems with some games.
But I think even if it is the case Sony would bring the update. Sony doesn´t prompt us to update to ICS if people don´t want it. Because of that there isn´t an OTA update, just through PC Companion.
if we dont get it on play then can we flash it as a stock rom when it offically comes out by using the ics update on xperia ray. Example?

I don't understand that, here, with the updated Adreno drivers, Fifa 12 runs even faster on ICS. Sure, Gameloft and Rockstar games just crash, but can they be lazy enough for not fixing that?
I love ics to death and I cannot wait for the official version to come out.

Ive just flashed back to Gingerbread due to a few of the issues with games. Mainly emulators. I had my GBA games backed up onto my netbook and played them on my Play but unfortunately on ICS, no GBA emulators work. It reminds me of Windows XP vs Windows Vista and 7. Some older games don't run on Vista/7 due to compatibilty problems and that appears to be whats happening here with the Play. You want ALL your games to work then stick to Gingerbread. I do however think that Android needs to implement a "Compatibility Mode" type function seen in Windows OSes.
Also, ICS is a memory hog. I always run GO Launcher EX on my Play due to hating the Xperia Launcher but GO Launcher lags quite a bit on ICS roms. Exiting the app draw gives a blank screen (just wallpaper shows) for about 10 seconds before everything shows up again. Scrolling also proves to be very jerky. GO Launcher also provides a handy task killer that is just a 1 press job, making "swipe" task killing pointless.
Im pretty sure as well that ICS is doing away with flash video support. I may be wrong though.
All in all, the cons of ICS outweigh the pros. However, thats just my opinion. I say the Xperia Play should just be a Gingerbread device. If you absolutely NEED ICS, then buy a newer handset.
Has anyone checked if ICS for the Xperia Play is available through PC Companion ?
GBoid (GBA emulator) works on my ICS Rom. Playing Baldur's Gatte Dark Alliance
"Im pretty sure as well that ICS is doing away with flash video support. I may be wrong though."
Flash runs fine on my ICS Tablet..
I haven't been able to check the link (leaving work so a bit rushed) but I'd be shocked, and need more proof then this, that ICS isn't coming. Most of the problems I've heard from the beta sound like.. beta related issues. Code set to Debug, that sort of thing.
Still confident ICS is coming. Better then GB for our device? No idea, but I'd bet (small) amounts of money it's still coming.
Sony did release a Beta rom for the Xperia Play. So they might be working on it to fix the issues or they won't be releasing ICS because it will incompatible.
I really hope the Play doesn't do what the X10 was doing when Froyo was about as old as ICS is now.
I love ICS on my Amaze, but the roms I have tried on my play just don't seem to match up, I'm still running 2.2.4 now, and I think it is running fine.
Was just about to post this, Mentioned on The Verge as well
http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/24/3041799/sony-mobile-drops-xperia-play-ics-upgrade
This news would be horrible if true.
I got fed up waiting for Sony to get their bums in check and yesterday I flashed the true ancestor rom which runs much smoother than stock. I've left my bootloader locked hoping ICS would be here soon so I could experience ICS for the first time when it's official.
First of all, excuse me beforehand for an longer post than I had expect from myself, Secondly, have in mind that I'm sharing my own thoughts about the ICS-update and what I have wrote down is saying why Sony wouldn't, IMO, manage to get the ICS out of beta-stage for the Xperia Play, and this is all my own thoughts, and as always, you who are reading this post are free to agree or disagree to this posts information.
to start the post, this is why I would never read an article or anything like this, and especially not believe it when I'm reading it:
1. I Won't believe that the whole Sony Ericsson/Sony development-team has sent out an beta of ICS to Xperia Play for nothing.
2. Giving us promises about ICS since 1. It's from the 2011 Xperia line, and 2. as long as I have reed, the freaking 2011 Xperia-line will be updated, even if we have "weak" hardware for ICS according to Sony (to be straight forward).
3. KalleD from Sony would never have started an forum especially for feedback in the Xperia-forum without having in mind to get the ICS out of beta-stage to release a full-featured ICS for our phone.
4. The telephone cost to much to not be given the ICS update.
5. It would be REALLY BAD (yes, caps on that) PR(Public Responses) for Sony if they just gave up the development for ICS at an beta-stage with all the promises in mind.
6. The Sony Xperia S from this year is PS-certificated as well so that mean that they also have a reason to develop a fully functional PS-pocket with more added to it for ICS, and get the same experience to Xperia Play isn't that hard seen from a developer-perspective.
7. Have the 6 points before and more in mind, how good-looking and badass would Sony be looking for the big mass if they sold a underpowered hardware with this high price and not be giving us ICS, not that good looking or badass, and neither would they have some of their customers remaining (even if they was foolish about the PS3 and don't gonna get many buyers getting an PS4, especially if it has a feature saying OtherOS (bad yoke).
Even if it comes with big problems during Sony Ericssons article about how ICS needs more RAM to function, and has explained why it doesn't gonna run that smooth as GB for example.
But that's just me, and I gonna stay realistic and not listen to much to news-sites that just wanna release articles without news-values according to myself since they are referring to a page where Sony Xperia S isn't even included in the ICS-updates.
So hey, what about if Xperia S isn't given ICS-update either? OMG OMG OMG!!!!!111 :O some of you may start think about that statement from an unreliable source like me, and yeah, I agree, doesn't sound very true, so let's don't listen to the news to much in this case, since I just played a yoke as well like those news-sites)
So let's just wait a couple of days since May isn't even over yet, and then I didn't even mention that June hasn't been knocking on the door yet, and according to Sony/Sony Ericsson it would be late May, early June for the release.
And as a worst case-scenario we still have the ICS-beta (and even some 4.0.4 builds in the Custom ROM-section), and as well we will see the update for Xperia S, and when the the Xperia S gets the ICS-update with PS-pocket, then the developer-community will be able to pull the trigger of anyhow and manage to get the PS-pocket and features from the Xperia S and push it to the Xperia Play and do some APK-edits and perhaps get a somewhat nice user-experience.

At the VIP event they also confirmed that 2.4 will be available very soon after Google releases it!
After experiencing with X1 and X2 and then X10 and knowing SE's incomplete support of their products, I would like to assume that ARC will come with 2.3 and die on 2.3 and I hope I stay with this assumption without putting any pressure on myself that why my phone doesn't do this or that
This is what SE has been promising over and over for every generation of their phones and they fail to deliver, don't believe it then go back and read SE history. This is their repetitions in failure for every device they put together.
But this won't stop me from buying the ARC.
The new phones are different. Google brings the OS, Qualcomm does almost all drivers, and SE does Timescape, the launcher, and a few smaller apps. Most of the customizations are just some reskins, and Timescape has no real integration with the rest of Android, making it a lot easier to update without causing problems. Sony Ericsson said yesterday in Brussels that they plan to at least keep updating for 1 year after release.
The X10 was different. It was SE's first Android device, and Timescape and Mediascape were heavily integrated with critical parts of Android. They've learned from their mistakes with the X10, the new ones will do much better!
I wouldn't exactly agree with that.. SE promised that they would upgrade from 1.6 to 2.1 and they did.. and in doing that they realised that they had made it inordinately difficult for themselves to do so.. They say that they learned a valuable lesson from this.. and that the arc (and it's siblings) are built in a more modular fashion, allowing them to add their overlay UI etc without a massive coding exercise. I tend to believe that assertion.
Whether or not we'll get 2.5 (or what ever comes after 2.4).. I don't know.. but Android has matured significantly from 1.6 to 2.3 and future updates are less likely to be as significant (IMHO).. so perhaps not so big a deal anyway.. ??
We will be getting 2.4 (which still is Gingerbread but more optimized), after that 3.1 (Ice Cream) should follow, merging 2.4 and 3.0. As long as we get Ice Cream I'll be happy!
couple of points to the OP though.. That article was written in January.. and 3.0 is for tablets.. The next update for phones is 2.4 (Icecream)

That article has no sources, and similar ones have been posted in january too. Sony Ericsson has already got 2.4 running on the Arc, people tried it, and it's not the Gingerbread-Honeycomb merge. 2.4 is still Gingerbread, and if the next release will not be Gingerbread2, we'll be seeing 3.1 next. There will be no more new codenames in the 2.x family.
Everyday.... day by day...... I get disappointed by XDA member ( not all of them )
can't believe that there are people think that Honeycomb will be released for mobile handsets while Google itself stated it's only Tablet's OS. Yes, many developers have ported the Honeycomb into their HTCs' or Samsungs', but have you really tried it? fonts are un-readable, resolution is not that good and you can't read anything from it. Basically it was ported for testing and to play with for a little while.
2.4 is still Gingerbread as many members before me stated and Sony Ericsson already planning to release it when it's available. Regarding the difference, its main idea was to make dual-core applications run on a single core processor, along with minor changes.
please don't believe everything you read, it's really getting annoying how many come here with rumours just to start a useless thread
Best Regards,
Just thought of sharing this, if you don't like it then do us a favour, don't even look into this. Since I saw this on a couple of sites, I thought of sharing it. Even engadget had mentioned such a thing in early Feb I guess.
Yes I know icecream is dubbed as 2.4 which will contain elements from both gb and honeycomb, scheduled to run on non dual core smartphones. I have also seen some arc's testing the 2.4 os
I didn't know that the post was outdated, never the less lets move on, one should not get annoyed with every single thing. There are millions of things out there in this world to do the same. Might sound rude but shouldn't unless you're soft.

I like it. It sounds like they're going to straight-up release it for use with Flashtool. With the work that the developers have done in porting roms to the R800x, chevyowner in particular, it should be a really good development in terms of updates.
please add cdma to this thread title, otherwise a lot of gsm use will get a shock for their life xD
It doesn't really pertain specifically to CDMA. It's a general deal, apparently, that Sony is delaying, and aren't releasing OTAs.
Verizon's Firmware is different from Sony's, so I still believe if Verizon does update your devices that it will be OTA, As of other carriers, I don't know.
The .145 firmware was a UK firmware that supported CDMA variants, which is mostly the Verizon Xperia Play. I believe if Sony could do it then, they can do it again. I'm holding out hope for this one.
I'm patiently awaiting the UK ICS Rom for my r800x.

Yeah... but atleast they've told us that if it'll run on 2011 Xperia devices or not so we don't jump in straight and update to Ice Cream Sandwich which then would be a problem for us.
So, I guess all us with a 2011 Xperia model will have to stay on Gingerbread. Well I don't mind as long as everything runs smoothly which it does on Gingerbread.
I am still a unhappy though cause I was looking forward to ICS I waited so long !
I had a feeling it was a bad sign when Verizon offered me a free upgrade..... Glad they chose to grease the squeaky wheel.... Still sucks though....
You know what? I think sony tells us bullsh*t... my friend has Nexus S with OFFICIAL ICS and it's perfectly smooth. This phones specs are similar to ours - 512 MB of RAM and 1GHz CPU. There aren't any problems on it so it means having nicely optimized ICS on our phones is possible but it seems Sony are sh*tting pants now and telling us right before ICS launch that it won't be running smooth because it needs more resources. I think they are too lazy, there were always problems with their company if we talk about upgrades. X10 has got 2.3 for 8 months and it's still full of bugs. I'm sure I'm not the only one who afraids of this upgrade and not the only one who's mad at them (look at the comments on their blog). They promised great update and now they made us thinking is there a sense of upgrading to ICS if it's so slow in their opinion. Shame on you, Sony.
EDIT: Besides - Sony will soon launch Xperia Neo L in China. The phone with THE SAME hardware specs as our phones. So that means its ICS will be slow too? What's the point in releasing the phone with "slow SQL, low ram and heavy CPU use"?

lol true. It's got nothing to with ICS but it's all got to do with the Sony Delevopers !
And it's good that they actually highlight these possible issues anyway! I would much rather know this than update blindly and find them later by myself. Then again, what people seem to want is to hear that their device is magical. It sells better indeed.

From where did you read JB is an upgrade to ICS?
All I read was that JB was to bring in more performance in addition to ICS features, so that basically means you don't need to be on ICS to have JB.
Think of it as GB=WindowsXP; ICS=WindowsVista; and JB=Windows7:
GB is fast but looks like turd, ICS looks awesome but slow, and JB looks awesome but fast. From that analogy, you can always upgrade from XP straight to Se7en, thus, you can always upgrade from GB to JB granting the manufacturer grants it.

He's more on about the reasons of why Xperia Play didn't get ICS, gaming compatibility, JB won't change that, just adds to the problem of fragmentation.
Hardware/Software that's not supported in Vista wouldn't suddenly work in Windows 7.
Ending point is Google need to enforce some damn policies to stop the android fragmentation, I mean Sony launching phones in 2012 with GB is unforgivable.
Nah there we'l be no official jb for play...maybe other xperia phones but not the play so don't be getting your hopes up
Well. The devs of this forum managed to get touchpads to work properly on ics. So, I think that we should get an official update. If the dev's can make a stable rom with working touchpads, then sony can too! It will also perform a lot better on JB. We should make a petition!

Yeah, well, people, don't get your hopes up. ICS being slashed off our upgrade list totally slashes off the possibility of having Jelly Bean.
But with Sony saying again the magic word "ALL," don't you think that would make quite a stir again if they abandon the Xperia PLAY, again, for the second time, after just saying ALL? Now that's cow turd more stale than X10 and Xperia PLAY abandonment issue all put together. (Ssshhh, I see a riot coming...)

I think it's a little rash to assume that because Sony use the word "all" they actually mean all of them. What are they supposed to say, "all but the Xperia Play?" Or maybe list out every single phone that they actually plan on still supporting? All they have to do is say, "Well, sorry guys, we tried, but we didn't guarantee that it would work in the first place."
Honestly, stop expecting/hoping Sony to support this phone in an official manner and support the people in the community that have already done much more than Sony was willing to.
Sony should have at least released a finished version of ICS to us devs here but no.... they were scared away by not as many games working on ICS..... Well guess what? It's My phone and I should decide if I want the upgrade. Not someone else. As for JB, they should have at least come out and said "no we won't upgrade X phones". It would get us mad but not mad upset and angry for taking our hopes away...
I think the xperia play, can have jelly beam because jelly beam has more fluid that ics
That magic word "ALL" is for all Sony phones. Play is SE so don't count.
My missis has Experia Arc and guess what no ICS there either bur Arc S has...
What Sony doesn't realize is, if this gets jb, or even ics, the sales will go WAY up! That means more game companies will update! And they can ALWAYS have a
"we cannot guarantee a solid gaming environment, or that pre owned games will continue to run on your xperia play. Clicking 'I accept' will continue the update."
I would update! All I care about is minecraft (which is still gonna update) and emulators!
Point is, Sony is being stupid. We need to tell them that we want a nice, clean update, and that the game makers will follow their suit. And even if they don't, others will MAKE MORE GAMES! The ONLY thing I want other than jelly bean in general is more app space.
I'm pretty sure Sony will come in for us. I'm running a JB Rom and all games work fine. Sony just needs to work harder. Also yes minecraft does update more frequently now so yes they would add support for 4.0+

Just read this and wanted to share.

"Sony has some new firmware on the horizon for the 2011 Xperia handsets. Firmware version number 4.1.B.1.13 is likely to be a new version of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has been certified for all 2011 handsets apart from the Xperia PLAY. We have no idea what improvements it will bring over the current firmware (4.1.B.0.587), but as it’s the first new firmware in months, we expect bug improvements and maybe some significant enhancements too. "

A pity it won't be for the xperia play.
I've just learned to live with Gingerbread on this phone.
Went out and bought a 32GB microsd card and loaded it up with PS1 roms, stuck in the extended battery, and using it as a pure gaming device, with occasional phone calls

The only good I can see from these updates woudl be in porting some of the new features (or all) to our phone. Otherwise I would agree with you. Plus, its nice to know that Sony is releasing a update for 2011 phones at the end of 2012.
"If" they do hav a stock Ics for our Play then it "should be" the best ics we can get. Coz its thier job & duty to giv the best to all sony consumer. I'll take it.

Pissing me off the fact that we're stuck on gingerbread, I hate sony and will never buy another Sony again after they abandoned us on year old firmware.
Even though it is understandable with ICS being worse for gaming than GB..

This.
Honestly, we can get panoramas, notification toggles, data management, lock screen widgets and many other "improvements" of 4.x without 4.x... so I'd rather just keep the integrity of my gaming intact.

So we have had unofficial versions of jellybean for a while now. All the way back to the jbx think tank. Now I hear there is a possibility for a Jellybean update(POSSIBLE. Please don't spam this thread saying "Jellybean never! Muahaha! And ect.) now that firmware has been finally certified for the first time in many months! Now let's get discussing! What are your thoughts on these things? Not just an official update but Jellybean in general.
They might release jellybean 4.1 (or 4.2 because theyre a bit late )
Because it has better performance and they already had some full ics builds
But i think itll last some time until theyre out
I expect a good performance because theyre getting paid for this stuff.
I think it will be possible if Sony will work with devs to get everything too 100% mainly the touchpad though

Just a theory, but i also hope that theyll release jb
Sorry but I don't think an official jellybean update will happen. They just announced their update plans concerning jellybean and some newer and more powerful devices ( arc s for example) won't be updated. More info on xperiablog.net.
So the new firmware might be for a superlate ICS update or just nothing really.
But I don't care because xda devs have made an amazing job to bring jellybean to our devices. Cosmicdan, cj360, farenheith and all the others, you guys worked very hard to get the most of this abandoned phone. Many devs naturally moved on to other devices, but you stayed for this very special and unique device which did not receive the official support it deserved.
So thank you guys, I won t be buying another Sony phone before long I think because of their catastrophic update policy ( and it doesnt seem it gets better), but you made me and still make me very happy with my phone.

You think sony's update policy is bad? You should see Nokia's, they are notorious for abandoning devices within months of their release. Probably why they've all but disappeared from the cellphone competition. Coming from Nokia handset's, N-gage, N900 etc, I'd say sony is a God Send.
Actually from my experience they are all bad in term of updates. I can only recommend Google Nexus devices, although Samsung devices come close because they don't lock their bootloaders, if it is, its usually Verizon or ATT.
For now I will only buy a Nexus device or an Xperia Play 2.

Very interesting stuff here. I don't really care if we get offical Jellybean. Ill probably switch to a Nexus phone since Im not much of a gamer and use this to play minecraft.

I'm not a big fan of either verizon or s.e. for the lack of support for this underdog of a phone. but the devs here obviously showed both of them that when you work together as one you can give people what they want...& thats the freedom of choice.

I am coming from iPhone 4, I have 3 android tablet so I am familiar with android. I was waiting for the Nexus 4 but decided to get Xperia instead. I was surprised at how cheap it is, I just bought it for $90 unlocked GSM. Its a tremendous value. I want to use it for emulation.
Anyways, I have spent the past few hours reading this forum trying to come up with a play of what to do when I comes in. I want to put ICS or Jelly Bean on it mainly because I want to have the virtual back and home buttons. I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

If u want emulation, remember that FPSe and Mupen64 got touchpad support ONLY on ICS and +.
So just flash last CM9.1 FXP 152 + farenheit fix and you're done.
Unfortunely, JB is still no go for us, because touchpad causes lag, nobody knows the reason. Except touchpad, JB is 100% funcional tough..
Jelly bean it will be like a gift in christmas for me xD come on developers work more on it!!!!!!!

The best rom thus far...
The best one I tried so far is this one
The gapps work (when flashed)
The SIM Card works (nice)
Relatively Stable
Fast Bootup
CyangenMod Based.
You do need an unlocked BL
I tried others like SlimBean but it was too buggy and the gapps kept failing on me.
Recommend giving this a try.
