"Samsung Now Says Galaxy S III Won’t Support DC-HSPA" - Galaxy S III General

I couldn't find any other reference to this about turn by Samsung - apologies if it's been posted before.
Source: http://www.itproportal.com/2012/05/23/samsung-now-says-galaxy-s-iii-wont-support-dc-hspa/
My main reason for pre-ordering an SIII to replace my Note was the support for dual channel HSPA; I'm on O2 UK, and use my phone predominantly in central London, so the possibility of support for 42Mbps throughput is appealing - and I would never have agreed a 2 year contract without this 'future-proofing' feature.
I'm not sure whether the change of specification is due to marketing incompetence, production cost, quality control, firmware readiness or something more sinister, but none of these reflect well on Samsung. The fact that this has been quietly removed from the spec just a week before shipping is even worse.

Oh well

Did they ever officially claim they did?

There was a new article somewhere saying it did.

i dont remember reading any spec sheet with dc hspa

DC-HSPA Claims 42 throughout? Or Mbps? A device is only as capable as it can be, or worse. If the hardware is unchanged from what you had signed up for and it is truly incapable of DualCell ... you'd more upset to have it "with" it.
Flip side, a. Device hardware is unchanged, just "support" is removed.... Do some pushups! Is time for a workaround!
Flip b. Hardware change, we're boned for neutrino speed and have to settle for light. ..
Edit: i love that article for one reason, the person that wrote it is not on xda.
Buy the phone, internationally if you have to (we had to do it too, for a lot ), modify it appropriately...
Are we not just talking about dc-? Isn't that rel7 tech? I'm currently trying t... Oh nvm ... That's a pipedream. But I've tripled my WiMAX (you don't want it) speeds using things like "tricking" my phone into thinking i was using cdma and this "LteforCDMAmode" that was in ril.dump but i can't seem to replicate it or find info on it...

T-Mobile U.S. uses DC-HSPA. Their refarming away from AWS so there's a chance their version of the SGS3 will have quad-band support. If so, that could be an alternative.

To be honest i dont really care. The chances of the networks actually delivering anything like that much in real throughput is zero. They struggle to deliver even 1Mbps most of the time for more than a minute without the connection crapping out.

i would suppose the 3.5G is a small step towards 4G really. And since 4G hasnt even begun in the UK, and it will take a while until you are in a position to use 4G in most areas of the country, then id say, we would have to get the next samsung phone in 2-3 years with it.
Besides, LTE tends to drain the batteries quite fast as well, and to me it would be more valuable in a tablet rather than a phone.
How much browsing can you do on a mobile(even 4.8inch screen) before you say: god i have a headache staring at this phone already!

Email from Samsung regarding Source Code request

Read into this what you want. I had made a request for 2.6.35 source code for the SPH-D700 on Samsung's opensource site and this is the response I got this evening. Nothing concrete, might be a couple days, "some days" or couple months.

Yes... But then you are going to have the other "10%" *****ing that 4g was left out. You'd be piecing something together for the sake of well... Not too sure what exactly you'd be piecing it together for. There are already a hell of a lotta existing roms out from fantastic Devs that do everything that the rom is capable of doing sans overclock, battery life and a few extras without leaving out a primary function of the phone Just cuz it's not currently available to everyone doesn't mean that it's not a function that can be removed for the fun of it. IMO we'd be taking a huge step backward.
Not being able to overclock and undervolt to me is a huge step backward. Truthfully, for me, (cause I have 4g in my area) I'm torn between the two. The ONLY reason I don't just go back to 2.1 is because of the hardcoded gps accuracy.

I call BS on this statement. I'm in NYC, the most difficult market in the US for good data speeds due to network congestion, and 4G is consistently, at minimum, 10x the speed of 3G. Not to mention latencly is usually 90% less.

I have poor 4g coverage at home but when I'm about 10-15 miles west of here I pick up strong 4g from Philadelphia. It blazing compared to 3g.. especially upstream speeds. I had pics uploading to Facebook in the blink of an eye.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
When I have 4G, I usually get 6-9mbps down. I even got 4G deep inside a school building yesterday with my Epic. It was very cool. Didn't have 3G at all, but the WiMAX signal was strong and I got 8mbps down on a speed test.
4G is for real.

Who else is of seeing Ginger(everything) on xda for every phone but the fascinate.

Seriously. Everytime I open up my xda app all I see is Ginger this Ginger that..for every phone but ours. Who else is gets annoyed by this? I know it makes me cringe everytime!
Of course no blame goes to our devs who are fantastic. I applaud them for doing what they have done with Sammy's seemingly awful coding (good luck Kaos!) Wish they spent as much time and money on their software as they do on hardware! (which consequently is brilliant!)
End late night rant.

I hate this kind of response.
When I buy a phone, upgrades and updates are part of my buying decision. They're probably part of yours too. If there's a phone with a 900mhz processor and locked to 2.1, and an identical phone but with an 800mhz processor that will be supported for years, I will choose the latter. Whether you like it or not, when the operating system updates this quickly, updates are a feature.

I think the point here is that there never is any promise or guarantee of that support and I'm sorry but a sales person's word is no indication by any means. When we buy our phones we buy them as they are. To gripe about Samsung or Verizon's lack of promptness is ignorant and really annoying after seeing it so much. Normally you can trust the talented developers here to do better work anyway. The best approach is to wait patiently and support them in anyway you can whether it be logcats or donations.

This is my first Android phone (I'd previously been on an old dumb phone made by Samsung, and it'd been reliable the for all the years), and the reps said that Froyo was coming 'soon', and Samsung had already began rolling Froyo out for the Samsung Galaxy S in Europe a few weeks before- I figured it'd be at most a few weeks, not realizing that 'Galaxy S' did not include any of the phones sold in the US!
I was also fooled about the quality of the GPS, when I was first testing it out, I always thought it locked instantly, because I was always around wifi (and Google's Location services have wifi routers geolocated down fairly well). And when I wasn't around WiFi, I saw the big blue circle and assumed that was the GPS just slowly loading, not Verizon's cellular triangulation doing all the work while the GPS was just robbing my battery and doing nothing with it.
At the time, I was hesitant to go with Android. I knew that the devices were generally fairly low quality, while getting slow updates... but the iPhone hadn't been announced on Verizon, and I wanted to do application development, which is massively cheaper to get into on Android than the iPhone ($25 vs $100 + a mac).
Next device will be from a reputable manufacturer, I've learned my lesson.
I know what phone I bought. Thanks for your concern though. Also our phone actually was guaranteed to be further upgraded quite sometime ago.

I'm not complaining at all, in fact I don't see one word in the OP that looks like a complaint. Just asking a simple question if other people cry a bit inside when they see gingerbread in the "latest" category all the time.. excluding our phone.
As previously stated, for the sake of amazing devs I wish Samsung didn't code things like imbeciles.

I don't think there's anyone who would disagree with this. It's honestly disappointing how much more talented the devs seem to be when compared to Samsung's team. Good for the devs but you'd think a multi-billion dollar company could hire some better programmers.

Where is this "guarantee"?
And like many have said before, sales reps, service reps, and tech reps don't count. They are only trying to sell you a phone and a contract, or placate you with the current setup you already have.
Neither Samsung nor Verizon have officially said the Fascinate will be upgraded.
I'm not complaining about not having gingerbread. Like i said earlier its just annoying seeing it all over the place when opening up my XDA premium app.

I agree with you, but my point to the OP is, did anyone tell you the fascinate would get 2.3? I agree that they had a press release when the phone released about 2.2, but I have not heard anyone at samsung say anything about a fascinate getting 2.3. Would it be nice, ya. But does samsung have some moral resposibility to make non critical updates to the phone? No. I will never argue the froyo point, I was speaking in generalities.

Is The Galaxy Note The Best Phone Ever?

In spite of a few gripes (let's face it, no phone can suit everyone) the Galaxy Note must be the best phone ever made. It has no major issues and is small enough to be used as a phone and big enough to be used as a Tablet. It is also at the forefront technically and will soon be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich.
No. Its just bigger and it has a pen.
And it will not soon be updated to ICS.
But it is the phone I like most, and I have had a few.

You seem very hung up on this point and are using a lack of official statement to conclude that no update will be forthcoming. Has any manufacturer put a time table on updates. HTC announced a few phones today that will be upgraded to ICS, but put no timetable on the process.
I'm willing to be patient and see. At worst, CM9 should be available, and if someone can extract the s-pen apks then that might be good enough.
I think its the fastest/highest resolution phone available at the moment?
Certainly it has the largest screen, but that does not automatically grant it the "best" title. Some would even consider the size a negative.
Its lack of NFC and a notification LED are among its draw backs. The s-pen is awesome and the fact that its optional makes it only a positive.
In the end it all comes down to preference. That said, it would certainly get my vote for best phone ever.

Because I get my cell service through work. If I switch it means I pay for it. I would pay for the phone if it was compatible with T-Mobile. I could really use a new phone too, so I'm hoping someone else comes out with a similar type phone.

I am using it on T-Mobile. Wondering if the modem changer I used with my Galaxy Tab will give me 3G .. I really don't care if it does or does not ..

Samsung full of BS

So today i seen a review of the new kyocera rise. Whats very baffling is that the rise has the same specs of the epic and yet it has 4.0? its a shame that samsung has to lie to us.

Samsung never stated our phone cant run 4.0 It needed to run mtd and there would have been too many issues with that official update. Get yo facta str8 gangsta

Besides, forget specs, it was 100% an economical decision. Why allocate dev hours to a 2+ year old phone that isn't selling on store shelves any more?

However, does it really and truly matter? We have 4.0, we have 4.1 as well as others. Why? Because of the developers in this community that keep our phone from fading away. Who cares if it's official or not. If it was, don't ya think it would probaly be loaded down with bloatware and nonsense to begin with? Official means more stuff i gotta delete to make room for apps i will use! lol.. Just my thoughts on the thing. I love my OG Epic.

No doubt, I have a buddy that went from his Evo, to an iPhone 4s, to a Nexus, and now back to a 4s (work required him to switch this time).
I told him I was running Jelly and he didn't say anything at first until he remembered I'm still rockin' the Epic 4G, then he flipped. Haha he said "my theory is that you'll have that phone the rest of your life". Maybe he's right =]
Just hoping something fails before December so I can make claim for a new refurb before my insurance expires =]
What is BS about our phone & samsuck. Is the fact the GPS is kinda useless. GPS will not work/get lock outside of CDMA coverage. IMA that makes GPS useless! Drive from New York to LA & tell me that its all 100% CDMA covered:banghead:
Not to mention if you take your epic out of North America and want to use the ****ing GPS on it your **** outta luck
**** SAMSUCK!! I love this phone but I still have NOT BOUGHT one thing samsung after finding out the GPS is just totaly ****ed on our phone & there seems to be no fixing it with software.

No that does NOT WORK! I did a lot of testing with that.
If you Jam the radio bands for CDMA you can not & will not get a GPS lock. Samsung sucks ass! I mean how about if WiFi or bluetooth just refused to work out of CDMA coverage zones!

If you are say out on Lake Michigan or the Ocean or you have the Epic 4G with in a Jamming field of CDMA bands used in the U.S. the GPS is rendered useless. That is proof that the GPS is somehow tied to the cell radio reception and is not an independent true Sat based GPS.
Samsuck ****ed it up totally & never admitted it's falt:banghead: IMA its wrong to say the SPH-D700 Has GPS the Epic 4G's GPS is only going to work in parts of the world that have CDMA so forget trying to use this thing some day as a backup nav unit on a boat, survival bag, in the middle of bum **** NV or AK WI or Off shore, maybe an Oil rig or a fishing boat to log you fishing trip fun in the golf.

It wasn't a dumb answer. It's the correct answer. Not my fault you can't understand the difference.
I hear at&t gets it first around the end of april. The rest follow suit in early may.

AT&T might have awful customer service, but things like this are the reasons I stick around. AT&T seems to be very happy with the sales of the Galaxy devices and is becoming pretty fair with their updates, so it doesn't surprise me that they'll probably get the S4 first. Also, I'm sure that Samsung loves AT&T.

I believe on contract it will be $200. Or has things changed because of the LTE.

If it is 200 thats even better. Im not sure about lte pricing myself. About to upgrade from s2
I dropped AT&T after 10+ years when they refused to offer Android because they had their noses up Steve Jobs' sphincter.
But I went to T-Immobile which was a real mess.
Am on Verizon now, but will be back to AT&T for the S4 so I can have an unlocked global phone. No more CDMA for me. And there is no way in Hell that I would ever lock myself into a contract. Kind of like playing Russian Roulette just to drive a car you can't really save for.

You get called out for being an an obnoxious tool, but instead of fading away you decide to reply with something even douchier. Just stop.
You are not funny, so stop trying.

But I love unlimited unthrottled LTE

Whenever we go in to ATT store i run Speedtest on one of their 4g phones- usually around 8mb. Then i run it on my VZW and it's like 18mb. So i think verizon wins in that category.
