How do I get tablet mode without bricking my phone???
Sent from my GT-N7000B using xda premium

You cannot get it if you are on any TouchWiz based Rom, it is not supported by the TW framework.
On any CM9-based Rom you can change your DPI to 213 or less to get the tablet.
It can be done either editing the build.prop file in /system folder, or by downloading Rom Toolbox from
the market and doing the DPI change from its build.prop tweaks.
However, some of the said CM9 Roms have special procedures for getting the tablet mode. Read the
instructions in the OP.

CM9-based Roms are the only safe ICS Roms ATM. They contain a safe custom kernel built from I9100 source code,
while everything else (including Sammy's offical Roms) has an excellent bricking potential.
So, your safe ICS options would be:
1. official CM9
2. Asylum ICS
3. ParanoidAndroid
4. MIUI
However, read the flashing instructions VERY carefully.

edits to the framework since its TW would need to be done via decompiling the jar files and apk files, doing smali/xml editing, recompiling the jars/apks, pushing them to your device, fixing permissions, rebooting, changing dpi then rebooting again
its not as simple as an app that edits frameworks. its alot more work then you would figure, TW is a b!tch

b-eock: I just want to get some clarification on the installation process. I believe the installation process for getting to MIUI changed a while ago where you no longer need to flash the cm7-initial kernel, efs backup, etc. You just have to be on 2.1/2.2 bootloaders and have CWM installed then flash the MIUI zip (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
Would this process not be the same for GalaxySense or am I missing something?

Which kernel? When you flash MIUI, it includes it's own kernel correct? So would it be the MIUI stock kernel that you need?
And about backing up EFS, if MIUI no longer requires that step, as in it does this as part of the flash process now, why is it necessary to do it before flashing MIUI? Just trying to get clarification. Seems kind of strange to me.
This states using the new CM7/MIUI flashing procedures as well.
I will try this in the night!

GalaxySense has existed since April for the Galaxy S i9000 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044637). This is simply a port to run it on the Captivate (which has also existed since April or May by following the Escapists instructions).
Projects like this is why an AOSP based kernel is so important. AOSP removes all of Samsung's proprietary issues and allows any other ROM that has been ported to AOSP to be ported to the Captivate. CyanogenMod, MIUI, and GalaxySense are all using the same sources to build from..

Yeah, I don't think that's possible, b/c I'm pretty sure you have to deodex to decompile and recompile the framework.apk an other system apks that need modding... may be wrong though.

In that thread someone mentions that nottach did a 1% Mod for a HKTW version of Android that would supposedly work with odexed systems, but I never actually found any posts verifying it. There was a link included, so it's there if you're inclined to look.
I was looking for this mod for an odexed system too, but in the end I just decided to flash a deodexed system.img. Since I was trying to keep my phone as "stock" as possible I was reluctant, but with how many mods are designed for deodexed systems it just seemed like the best thing to do.
You can always flash a recovery from an odexed backup, which I have done with no issues.

It should be compatible with all deodexed firmwares stated in my main post. The one I have tested is KK5 but I see no reason why it shouldn't work on the other ones as all of the files are pretty much the same across firmware versions.

Yeah, my suspicions were right. Your framework files were not replaced. Let me test this...
In the meantime, if you have root explorer, replace your ext.jar, twframework.apk, twframework.jar with the ones in my zip and reboot.
If I am right, your gallery should also be bouncing.
OK, figured out the problem. My ext.jar was the same one as KK5. Doesn't explain why your messaging, gallery and dialler aren't bouncing.
New fixed version, should work now. Going to hit my head against a door if I have made anymore stupid mistakes.
Question is, is this an actual mod that can be reproduced on currently modded apps? Cuz all that gives us is the fact we need to redo all mods around yours... You have a guide on how to reproduce it?

Updating Custom ROMs

Now my question is how do you guys update your respective ROMs instead of flashing newer versions through recovery? I tried GooManager but it didn't work for me :-|

Simple. Set up VM environment there are simple walkthrough video and once your set up you can pull straight out of the devs or any branch. I do my own when I feel I need to add a feature I do. There are a major variety of bases to choose from. Its much easier than many think. In my opinion its safer as I know exactly what I'm getting. Not to mention an addiction lay within too.
