The trick is getting garmin maps work on android devices... I'll post full details tomorrow (no guarrantee though )
HTC location doesn't have highly detailed maps of all the countries...
Garmin has those, but it's not fully available on android
Offline navigation is a plus too! Garmin have that.
But i'm using another app to read the Garmin maps... As i said, i'll post all the details later...
Keep posting guys! I wanna see more people interested in this

Having offline interests me a lot! I use Google Navigation and Google Maps right now but takes awhile to boot and locate. Not having to use data, I'm hoping, will lead to faster performance. Plus, I'm sure this could be used in other devices as well? I'm looking at my WiFi-only tablet as a 10" GPS if this works out =)

It will work on every android device...
Performance will be a little slower on our dz (if you put details on max). But on faster devices, its really smooth
I think it would be awesome if this post got to android general forum
EDIT: i won't post the guide tomorrow, as i need a pc to make the guide (i have to check some things while writing the guide).
So maybe thursday afternoon, or friday.

Garmin still supports the majority of them... I live in lebanon... Good luck finding an offline map with FULL POI for me on copilot, navigon, and tomtom. Garmin was my only choice, and i ported the first Lebanon map to lebanon.... Selling it for 10$ now

I'm definitely interested. I'm always looking for apps that'll let me get directions without connecting to data or GPS.

I would also be very interested!

why do you let them wait? app is called navitel. it's available on google play and can read gmapsupp.img from garmin. search it on google to know more.

you obviously don't have knowledge in those apps.
Navitel is the app that will be used for navigation. but navitel DOES NOT support .img maps. it does support .nm2 maps, and the key is to know how to convert those maps, and get rid of the errors...

Good Navigation App for 2.2?

Is there a good, working, navigation app out there for 2.2 yet?
JD
I would like to know this as well... Copilot are apparently working on an update, Sygic Mobile Maps 10 hasn't got back to me yet (currently runs but with soooooooo much lag)... and Navigon is reported to kind of work, but looses gps alot?
So far my best option is Google Navigator... it does a bloody good job... only problem is the phone gets very hot - 45c yesterday on a 40 minute drive but I think this is what happens with most apps!?

Just downloaded... looks good so far... I will give this a spin, thanks
NDrive any good?
It's sad that Sygic has lag in 2.2, I wonder if it will be the same when the official release comes out...
I downloaded the Ndrive 7 day trial and its not bad, I like the horizon panning, although the UI is a little more cluttered than Sygic. I'm tempted to buy it at 43 Euro's ($63.28 AU) but the other half of my mind says wait until the official Froyo is release and maybe Sygic will be back to normal. There are rumours that google has OTA'd an update for Froyo to it's employee's :

Nothing!!! thats been 6 days now and no reply
Ndrive seems to work well... I just don't like the announcements... they seem to tell you your next turn around 1/2 mile away from the junction, which is stupid! Personally I'm not buying it and will keep holding out for copilot which I found to be perfect
Is there a comparison chart ? I'M NOT sure wich navigationsoftware is the best and I want the best
Sent from my HTC Desire
I ended up buying Ndrive cause of urgency as it seemed the only option atm. I found this http://gpsreviewer.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/second-and-lastsemifinal-ndrive-vs-sygic-drive/ but a copilot comparison is missing. One the same blog there are a few other comparisons, I'm not sure how relevant they are to android specifically froyo. I also found http://iphonetunes.net/index.php/full_article/comments/routes_compared_-_copilot_vs_navigon_vs_igo_vs_sygic_vs_tomtom/ which compares routing for a few apps, but is for the iphone. Functionality differs slightly between devices, and I would call either comparisons scientific studies, rather reasonable guides.

Yes it works and its really good... especially as its free!
not in many eu countries.
brut maps navigation works in Australia though last I checked, there was a slight lag. As well as that, I don't like the dark background of the navigation app.
Any news about IGO Android for hi res devices (like the Desire)?
does Google Navigation work in Belgium and mainland Europe? And does the phone really gets very hot using Google Nav when driving for example on a 3 hours journey?

Google maps has all the NYC subways available, you just have to turn it on in the "layers" section in the gmaps settings. It will even give you travel directions using the trains/buses.

I'll point out too that gmaps has mass transit info like that in most major metro areas. We don't have subways here, but I use the city busses all the time, and every single stop and schedule is available to me in real-time with just a few clicks...it's probably been the #1 most useful app out of all of them on my HD2!
I love it when someone at the bus stop asks me "do you know when the XXX bus comes?" or "do you know which bus I need to take to get to _____?"...just so I can say "no, but I can look it up for you!" as I whip out my magicbox with the 4.3" viewport...it always wows them
yeah , just the same i'd liek to see a subway map app which shows nyc. it is one of the largest, most impressive as wellas misunderstood subway systems in the world yet there is no map app of any sort for it; at least that i can find.
i'd love to hear if anyone knows anything regarding this...
thanks

The google maps app on your phone has a transit option that does exactly that. I've used it many times and it has all of the NY Subway info. It's never failed me. Check it out. Gives you very detailed directions to the subway from where you are on foot, then which trains to take, the foot directions to get to your final destination once you get off the train.

You download the info before you leave or get into the subway. The program will stay running and you can look at your phone even if you don't have a signal...
It's not a step by step GPS function. It's just directions. Or just download the info, email it to yourself and look at the directions via email...
Get Directions-->Transit tab--> Type in your start and end points and you get the info...

Thats what I do, but the Subway maps have just been updated (Effective June 27), so get the latest maps at MTA.Info With all the budget cuts with the MTA, the new maps are a must have (bus maps also).
Also, before Googlemaps had transit info, I would use HopStop.com
thanks guys. these are all fine work-arounds and i use them already however, this does not really address my question.
i am looking for, or would like an actual nyc subway map application.
does anyone know if any?
thanks

Galaxy s GT-i9000 [europe] with Ndrive 11

Dear members:
I have Ndrive 11[gps software] in my galaxy s ,if you have any questions about it please feel free to ask away.
pros:
new interface, simplified
super fast gps lock ,less than 5 seconds!
Weather forecast
new share feature for facebook ,favorites,my location, etc
support for foursqare.
google places search within app.
cons:
The above features in blue text crash the app when trying to log in,not a deal breaker but never the less i would like it to work.
But compared to the versions that i have in windows mobile devices it is miles better.
greetings! i have Ndrive 10, i can't find Ndrive 11 on android market...how does it work? can i upgrade using the same maps or i have to pay again? thanks!

it is available to Italy, just use the Ndrive word in the market not ndrive 11,
a list of contries\regions will come up.
about the facebook problem etc....
Ndrive support just told me that a fix will be out inthe coming days.
lucky for me a use ndrive 10 in other device, but it should be an upgrade option, i must stress that when i bougth the app it was not listed on ndrive website yet.
how do u like ndrive? im thinking of trying it
i see, this time main program is given together with maps...again they should give an upgrade option with a discount to whom already bought Ndrive 10 (in my case i bought all europe maps). i will not give my money for ndrive 11 to pay again for ndrive 12 and so on wtf. thanks for your answers OP.

To be honest the reason i got it is that Ndrive is the only gps software for android that offer the most features at the moment plus it is the only one that has maps for the island i come from, Madeira.
personaly a love Igo8 but so far is only available for windows mobile.
I also trying Aura sygic, now this software is allot more polished than ndrive but it does not have the google feature that i love in ndrive.
Sorry ... but IGo MyWay is available for Android. Try a search for "iGOMyWay v8.4.2.139242 for Android"
I've using NDrive (10) on my SE Xperia X10i since last summer.
I find the gui a bit clumsy, but still I think it's ok.
I agree with regards to their upgrade policy!
I received the following answer today:
Dear Costumer,
Thank you for contacting NDrive Support.
While acquiring a NDrive product, the customer acknowledges that is acquiring a life-time licence for the product as it is presented in the date of purchase. The licence is only valid to a unique device (non-transmissible) and any map update or software upgrade may have costs associated to it.
We will soon have available a free V11 upgrade (software only), which will be available through Android Market. When it is available, you will be notified on your device.
Cumprimentos / Best Regards

That is a ridiculous policy and I'm not sure it is legal. When you buy software independent of hardware you should then have the right run it on whatever device you want. You should be allowed to reactivate the software when you get a new phone. I would never buy Ndrive if that is the way they operate.
I've tried Aura, Mobile Maps and Ndrive but the one i prefer is Copilot live, it just seems more stable than the rest.
Good, I'd like to know how to use the Ndrive folder on the SD, since many use maps, maps have 6GB of internal memory to occupy! Does elguem can help me!?

AGPS Patch - Need some testers for Official support

Well, my goal for the upcoming v2.0 of my aGPS Patch is to bring support to five more devices. This is one of the devices I selected!
I'm looking for some testers to see if the patch will effectively work.
It simply replaces gps.conf in /etc/ to be much better performing.
You can download v1.3 by clicking here.
To install, use Root Explorer or ES File Explorer to copy the new one over. Reboot. Give GPS a try! I recommend GPS Status. If your device uses ClockWork Recovery, you can simply flash the ZIP.
A reference thread can be seen at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250226.
Also, I'd love for someone to send me the gps.conf currently on their device.
Thank you for assisting me in the determination if this version works.
Better performance? You mean faster located or accuracy?
It is just the aGPS?

Yes, and stabilized results. Users who would lose signal while traveling or at higher speeds, this tends to keep the lock consistent and constant.
Also, if you would send me your /etc/gps.conf I would appreciate it. Custom ROM's tend to not do much in the way of making a crappy situation better, but I'm curious.
Thanks for your interest in assisting!
This is my gps.conf from GDX.
I will test it in later 2hours time, still in the office now.
and i have no problem on the old file, i can get the location with 20secs,(normally within 10secs) with my Papago Navigator in open air.But yes, my GPS device is NEVER turn off.
Just the information how i use the GPS.
* I saw your another post, is this patch only for North America?
I am from Malaysia.

No, this is worldwide. I did two versions but that ended and I am only offering worldwide patches now. So, should work no matter where you're at.
I simple tried the new gps.conf. I don't have any positive feedback for you nor the negative. I don't really feel any useful compare with the original one. Maybe 2secs faster, i am not sure.
But in conclusion, it can be used and no problem for a short test. I might give more opinion for a longer try.

At least we know it's compatible, then. It didn't kill your phone's GPS. Didn't think it would anyway. If you have time, play with it. If not, thank you for helping.

GPS Program, especially in India

I just bought MapMyIndia which is powered by Sygic 10 interface, the GPS itself is fantastic and the maps seems good. Although the interface isn't all that great, it's kinda laggy to scroll. What do you guys use?
I shelled out another 30 euros for sygic indian maps and they work far better than mapmyindia's android version, mainly because the sygic is a version ahead of the one provided with mapmyindia.

Free is only Google Map (world navigation activated version), but it needs active data connection. Many are saying if you pre cache data, it can works offline. But make it clear, it won't work, though it will not fetch map data, still you need active data connection to start navigation, otherwise it will voice masg ' data connection lost'
but i think this is the best, B'coz 2G pack in india <2$/month, you can use wifi to precache map, where you are travelling and then use it, will not consume much data.
Paid version working good, i have tried almost all available and i giving details as per my expperience
1. Sygic Aura 11.2.3 - Best interface, Good map, working nice on high end device
2. Navigon,v6.0 Good interface, Good map, Working Flawless in most device
3. NDrive , Good map, n interface, but not as good as Navigon
4.Sygic MapmyIndia, Average interface, Map n FC many times
But google maps does not have voice navigation in India. How will it work ?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
It does have, I am using.
If you concern about voice only - You need Sound synthesis if not installed(TTS). But i think it is installed in Note already, when i have switched from SGS to Note, it was working without installing it.
you can check it ,setting - voice input n output - text to speech setting.
And If
You are saying that navigation not supported in india, Then you need world activated navigation, Not with market google map. I have mention in bracket it in earlier post.
Stock OR Market google Map restricted navigation to work for few countries only.
