Can't reactivate EVO on family plan? - EVO 4G General

So, my daughter sent her phone swimming...I was going to let her use the Evo. I went online a could times wondering if I was just drunk or screwing up somehow...I'm not.
Every time I try to ESN swap to the EVO ("HTC wimax bar phone") I get shut down by a plan limitation and it tries to put that line on an indivudual plan.
Has anyone else seen this? I have been busy and not following Sprint news...

I had this trouble when activating online. As far as I know it has to be done over the phone.

Never had online swap issues before.
But, I was coming back to say I had it done over chat. Now I just have to figure out why my data doesn't work yet. Had to flash off MIUI to get the programming menus...I'm sure it's something I can find here on the data.
All good now.

I never had problems swapping phones online with my family plan till a few Weeks ago i had to call them to swap phones, the guy told me that online doesn't recognize family plans...that's funny cause i swapped phones number of times with no problem

Trouble transferring from AT&T?

Got my Evo this morning at 7am, and my number was transferred from AT&T ~35 minutes later. Everything works, but I can't receive messages from anyone on AT&T. I only get messages from friends on Sprint.. I'm assuming I'll have to call AT&T to get that resolved? Anyone else have this problem?
Other than that, everything else is working great. I love this phone! The wait to get it sucked, but it was well worth it..

I will be going through that same exact process after work so... tag for later.
Porting is a process that is rarely instant. Especially on the morning of such a major launch, plus the beginning of the weekend... I'd say to give it a few hours, though it CAN take up to a full day to provision properly. You'll get up and running soon~
Please make sure your At&t phone stays powered off until you can send/receive sms/mms from that carrier. You really don't have to leave it off for 24 hours. The intercarrier has gotten quite a bit faster that what it use to be!
Porting is always a process. Much less during a huge launch. Give it a little time and keep the old AT&T phone off.
Worse case get your msl and enter ##MSL CODE# this will bring up a menu where you can make sure that your new phone number is correctly placed in both those fields. If not you can save the correct number and reboot. Sometimes the phone provisions properly sometimes it will not.

You're probably right. I was actually surprised to see the number transferred so fast.. just figured it was all done at that point. I went ahead and sent Sprint CS an email just to see what they say about it. I'll post an update with resolution (if any) when it starts working..
Just wanted to update that I'm finally receiving texts from AT&T phones. I did have my old phone powered on this morning, so that might have been what caused the delay.
Turn off the phone then back on and go to.the system update menu and update profile. The porting can get hung up so update the profile and you should be good. Also sometimes the first call might say dial a correct area code even though its right. Dial out again and you will be okay after that

I had to make a phone call on my phone for it to complete the activation process. It worked fine after that.
I transferred over from AT&T at around 3PM and I'm still stuck without a working line.
AT&T makes it as hard as possible to switch so people won't leave...jk

This is true. However, I ported at approximately 10:30AM PST from AT&T and my port was INSTANT.
I was in RS for 5 hours trying to port 2 numbers from AT&T on Friday. I sure as hell wasn't going to let them turn me away. I ordered pizza for everyone at the store and we watched ESPN while I was there.
My numbers are ported although my GF is nagging me about not being able to send mms to at&t subscribers.

XD I feel your pain. I apologize for the long wait, since you were either suffering from the Sprint activation tool lagging nonstop, or employees not knowing what they were doing... Or both

Wait, are you saying that you won't ever be able to send MMS to AT&T numbers? Or that it takes a while for it to work?
MMS works on my line but not on her line. Correction: She's having issues sending MMS to her mom on VZW.
RS employees didn't know what they were doing and super lag on Sprints systems. I don't blame them I blame Sprint for not properly training them. I think mines works fine I have no hiccups.

MMS will start working soon, and if it doesn't, a profile update or a call to Sprint will clear it right up.
I wouldn't blame Sprint for not training our employees, per se. There are a lot of factors involved. Were they new? We had to have one of our new employees in my store just to have a body present, and it makes work insanely hard having to watch over and correct him every three seconds. Does that store regularly sell phones? I've seen stores in lacking wireless markets simply not remember how to activate phones. If you don't have lots of practice, you forget. Were they just working there for a job? I can name off tons of RS employees who don't have any business working in our industry, who are only here for the job. Lots of fresh-outta-high-school kids, mainly. One of my pet peeves
I used to work for RS back in high school and I should have went to the same store I worked at the reserve the phones. That store gets a lot of traffic and I used to sell like 50-60 phones a month.
The guys didn't know what they were doing and basically had to hold a piece of paper with instructions in their hands while doing the whole process. I'm very patience so I didn't care since everyone has to learn eventually.

If your last name.....

.....is Nelson or you have phone insurance, you might want to read this post.
(Let me preface this by saying I'm a Sprint Premier customer the hard way, 10+ years of service.)
I had to have my phone replaced through the ins. plan via Sprint through Asurion. Their website *specifically* says that if you submit your claim before 11pm, you'd have your phone the next day. Cool, I paid my $100 ded. and submitted it @ 948pm CST. Thurs. rolls around, and still no phone, no email about a tracking number, nothing. So I called and was advised the phone was shipped, and that if I checked back a little later, I'd have a tracking number in my email. True to the reps word, that happened. The phone arrived this morning around 930. It was a BRAND NEW PHONE (2.2) b/c there aren't any refurb'ed EVOs. Heck yeah! So I called and had it activated, and the guy kept calling me by the wrong last name. I didn't think anything of it, I had a BRAND NEW EVO. I made a test call, it went through, and I was on my way.
Fast forward to around 400 this afternoon. My boy told me he called and the phone went straight to voice mail, so he left me a message. Eh? No message notification, no nothing. I called it from my work phone....same thing. I tried to access v/m, and I was unable to, as it kept trying set up v/m, repeatedly. I start flipping through the phone settings trying to figure out what was up. And then I came to the "phone info" screen....and the phone number listed wasn't my phone number, and the "@sprintpcs.com" address wasn't mine either! The last name, Nelson, was the same one the rep kept calling me earlier.
Now, the gist of this is that I can call out on this account (his number appears on the caller id), and I can text out, but I can't receive incoming calls or texts. So I can call anyone, anywhere. On someone else's account.
I called up Sprint to let them know they activated this phone on the wrong account. The rep I spoke to, Kim, couldn't understand what was going on. It took me a good 5 mins before she finally caught on. She forwarded me to tech support to talk to another lady named Kim. She wanted me to do a factory reset, which I did, and reboot, which I did. Checked the info, it was the same. She was stumped, said it was up to Asurion to rectify, so she had a conference call with them. The rep said that they would have to send me another phone. I asked if it would arrive the next day, and he said it wouldn't arrive until *Monday*. Uh, no, that isn't reasonable. I asked to speak to a supervisor, so he transferred me. She said the same thing. I was furious. I asked her how this happened. Get this: the lady told me that it was because HTC ran out of serial numbers and this serial number is the same as Mr. Nelson's EVO, which is active. W.T.H. Do you *seriously* expect me to believe that garbage? Yup, she sure did. Well, I surmised, they're going to re-serial this phone and use it, so my thought process is that I can have them use the serial and ESN from my old phone and transfer it to my *new* phone. She said that I would have to call Sprint to ask that. I'm glad I got transferred to the phone survey after the call, b/c I let them know under *no* uncertain terms how upset I was.
I called Sprint again. The rep listened as I started by the beginning, explaining the whole "port my old serial/ESN to the new phone" so I didn't have to use some stranger's account and I could get phone calls this weekend. She transferred me to her supervisor, Clark. Clark listened intently, and rotated between asking me questions and putting me on hold. He finally came back and said, "So, you want me to turn off your phone number." *sigh*. I again explained that, HELLO, I AM RUNNING UP SOMEONE ELSE'S ACCOUNT. So then I got transferred to a MANAGER (guy sounded like he was on the NE coast). So I went through my situation AGAIN. He said, "Can you call me on a demo number so I can see what number shows?" As I had already done this with my g/f, I told him, it's the other guys phone number. He said okay, that he would notate his account so that they would STOP HIS STATEMENT FROM COMING TO HIM so they could sanitize it of my calls.
So, the long and the short of it is:
1) I won't have a fully working phone until Monday
2) No one did a [email protected] thing to help me get a phone before the weekend
3) I have an outbound-only clone of some strange guy's phone, and can make calls and send texts from this phone and no one cares enough about it to stop me or to notify this man.
4) Oh, and one of the myriad of people I spoke to told me that I couldn't go into the store and pick up another phone. I guess no one thought about letting me pick up a phone there and sending my "on the way" phone to the store to replace the one I picked up.
So, if your last name is Nelson and you have an 815 area code EVO, chances are I'm making calls on your account. I'm trying not to use it, but I'm kinda stuck. Sorry.
Yay.
Wow man, quite a story. Lol.

Fool. I had to call in my phone b/c it was lost/stolen, not b/c it was rooted.
And it has nothing to do with the new phone being rooted. As I stated in my first post, IT IS A BRAND NEW PHONE.

im not saying you rooted the phone for someone else info to be in the phone has to be activated. Just look at my brothwr in law got his phone on thursday tryed to rooted didnt work he got another one today and the phone he return is new where you think that phone is goin to. Asurion.
Rooting does not break a phone. And I would have asked for the manager's boss. It was their fault. They should have arranged a store pick up or overnight you one. A dishonest person could run up a huge phone bill for that guy to pay. I am sorry this happened. Hopefully everything is worked out.

Sprint Using MSL key for htc evo shift 4g (PG06100)

Hello all
I bought a htc evo shift 4g from ebay. Turns out they didnot pay the bills and so i cant get that transferred to my name. So basically i bought an expensive paperweight.
I had nothing better to do so I rooted it and am using it as my home phone through wifi for my google voice.
It sounds great. and call quality is good too.
Recently i got the msl number for htc evo shift 4g. I also have the MSL code for my other phone.
Is there any way i can change carriers or use that phone with my phone line from sprint.
Is it legal?
What are the ##codes# that i need to know?
I believe the only way you can use the evo shift is if the person before you pays his bills owed, but I doubt that will happen so I'm pretty sure your fudged when it comes to using it back on Sprint. You can get it flashed to metro, boost or cricket but I'm pretty sure its not legal as they switch ESN's from what I believe (mind you, a bunch of people on craigslist offer this service so don't quote me on the legalities of it).

I strongly believe AT&T is cracking down UNLIMITED DATA FOR NON SMARTPHONES trick.
I believe this deserves its own thread. Here's my story.
Bought unlocked .GS3 from expansys USA.
Went to AT&T store as new customer and got GoPlan for $50 everything unlimited. This plan gives you the same data that people can choose for non smartphones $10 a month.
Everything was working fine until this morning. In the notification bar I see data is active. It switches alot from H to H+ and 3G. This was happening when data was working fine. Anyways, now even when it says in the notification bar that it's on and working I can't use internet or do anything that requires data connection. My device is not rooted. All I did was got the phone...got the at&t Go Plan cut the sim with scissors to microsim and it was working fine for few days. NOW HERE IS WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING.
Called AT&T and spoke to several reps. Some of them obviously had no clue but the last rep made me kinda worried. She asked me for IMEI number. Before when I gave my .GS3 IMEI number they would tell me it comes up as an unknown device. This Chinese lady told me after I give her my .GS3 number it comes up as SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 ....WTF???? I thought ATT couldn't detect this when international phone is used ? Of course I denied and told her I was using old cheap Nokia which is not a smartphone. I don't know what she did but told me she would update it to make sure it's not a smartphone.
So how did they know I was using .gs3. Why is my data not working....what are my options here....

I can confirm that I had the exact same thing happen to me. Data worked fine until this morning. I can send and receive MMS, so the internet is definitely working. I called AT&T customer service and updated my number from my old, unlocked EVO 3D to my new GS3. They immediately recognized that it was a Galaxy S3. Data still didn't work. I had them change the IMEI in the system back to an unknown IMEI, but I'm still not getting any data services.

same goes with an international i9100 on my other line
if you ever call 611..dont ever tell them what phone you have! just say "oh its some samsung"
Just don't do the go phone plan meant for go phones only. It probably comes up as a red flag when you change the SIM where is the normal plans you call in and ask them to change the IMEI and you tell them which phone it is.

Hm, hopefully you didn't get a phone that was returned or something because another person got it flagged somehow.
There was another user here that was the "3rd" owner of his SGS3. And his phone was flagged in the system as a SGS3.

can you elaborate on that? do you call in with any dumb phone with your SIM card in it, tell them to switch the data plan by giving them the # of the S3, and then switch the SIM?
A few wks ago, I got a text from AT&T stating that I went over my data limit & I checked my ATT account online to see whats up. It showed that I had a non-smartphone & 100mb data plan. I've been on a grandfathered unlimited plan forever & I had to call ATT to get my old plan back. It took over a hour to get things straighten out.

No, once you call in they will see you are on an old dumb phone. Tell them you want the unlimited data plan for it. If they ask for an IMEI number, just give them the one from the phone you are calling in with.
After they set up the plan, take the SIM out and put it in your GS3. Good to go.

I've been on the $10 plan for almost 2 years. I had them change it at my local store. No problems. I got the AT&T One X, switched to a normal plan. Got my GS3, went back in and had them switch me back to the $10 plan. They knew, they laughed, all was well.
Go to a store. If they ask to see your phone, you don't have it with you, its a generic flip phone. Done.
update:
I seriously think AT&T is catching up on this trick. I spent one hour on the phone with a lady who knew what she was doing. She put my device under UNKNOWN made sure I had data for non smart phones and we did everything and no connection. The only time I was able to connect was when she applied data for a smartphone. She tested out $5 50mbps of data and as soon as she applied this it worked. Since I'm on a prepaid goblin I had to get 1.GB for $25 unless I sort this out....what should I do....buy old at&t phone...get a new sim card and use it then put it in .gs3? I think as soon as u put sim card in on a smartphone it will detect. I can't pay $75 a month and get 1.GB of data

Bought a Verizon PrePaid Moto G Today...

So let me tell you how this went down...
First, I go to a local Best Buy Mobile store to check out the Moto G for my girlfriend. They tell me they can't sell me one in the store until Jan. 9th, but if I purchase one online and choose to pickup in the store, I could get one. So I stand in the store, buy the phone on my GS4, and pick it up at the counter. Weird process, but whatever.
So I bought the phone. The lady at the register assured me that I would be able to use this on her line (which is a contract line). Go to activate it, and find out that it can't be done until the 9th. That's cool, no problem. Once I get home, I find out that the phone will only work on a prepaid line and BestBuy did not inform me of this. I go back up to the store to return it, but they won't take it back because it's opened. Oh, I forgot to mention, the lady at the damn counter was the one who opened it!
So, is there ANY way that I could get this to activate on a contract line without having it activated on a prepaid line for 6 months, or am I screwed? If not, is there a good way to bypass the activation and use it solely as a wifi "tablet" (for my girlfriend's kid)?
If I actually am screwed, anyone want this thing for $80 shipped in the continental US?
That's a lie about it being opened. I have returned prepaid phone there on several occasions. There is something either shady about your story or the person working but something isn't adding up here.

Yeah, I thought something was fishy about that too. I'm going to try and take it back when someone else is working.

You can bypass the activation easily, simply hit next 1 time, pull down the notification center, click on the multitasking button and swipe away the activation screen quickly, and boom! You have a $100 iPod touch alternative (which is why I bought it) I recorded a short video to show you, wiped it real quick because I just got it yesterday anyways

It doesn't make sense to buy device without SIM slot...

Why? CDMA phones have never used SIM slots. It's only with LTE now that Verizon and Sprint have used SIMs in their phones

uhm it was my impression that with bestbuy you can return prepaid phones opened within 14 days, the part you left out of your story is how long you waited to return the phone!

The Verizon phone has only been available for 3 days. He's no way near the 14 day limit. Love the attitude.

Cool story, brah. Nonetheless, I guess you missed the fact that he bought this for his girlfriend who is under contract with Verizon which is a CDMA carrier. You can't buy a GSM phone and use it on a CDMA carrier. The only time one would need a SIM card slot is if you're using it on Sprint or Verizon's LTE network and since this phone doesn't have LTE....
Thanks for the responses guys! I'll try the unlock method later tonight when I have the phone in hand again (girlfriend still has it at the moment).
As for the return policy, I agree with y'all. I probably should be able to take it back, but the lady at the counter seemed like she might have been new or something. I actually tried to take it back about 4 hours later, so way within the 14 day window mentioned earlier.
On a side note, I won't be using the phone either way as I just went ahead and bought a like-new GS3 from a friend that she is going to use (wish I would have known he was selling it PRIOR to all this). If I can use it as a tablet, I'll just let her kid have it, but if not, I'll try and take it back again.
Will keep everyone posted!
keep us posted guy, I might take you up on that offer.
Good luck.

Can you use this phone with other CDMA carrier?
So I can buy one at best buy at 99 usd and use or not? No need anything like an active line or anything else?

Correct. After being told they didn't have any at my local store I was happy to inform them that they had 8 of them in stock which was very easy to find out online, and a little arguing about whether or not they could sell it yet, as well as a call to their Verizon rep, I finally was able to procure a Moto G without activating it. Hoping to find out this will work immediately with PagePlus.
Good news everyone, I was able to bypass the activation screen and unlock the phone for "tablet" use (using the methods mentioned in this thread). After playing with the phone for a little while, I gotta say, I actually like the thing! While we won't be using this as a phone, I will probably keep it to use as a MP3 player for the house.
I played around with the features a little and the only real disappointment that I saw was the camera. Maybe I'm use to the 13MP on the GS4, but the picture quality just didn't seem very good. Better than my girlfriend's old iPhone 4, but lacking nonetheless.

Let me know how that works out. I tried and the pageplus rep said that the phone was unable to work, and it needed to be 'unlocked.' I wonder if I just got someone who didn't know what to do.
I returned my Verizon prepaid moto g today to BB. I did not have any issues. They did check to see if it had been activated. They turned the phone on and seeing the activate wizard appear turned it off. They only thing I didn't get back was the $0.70 for a 911 fee.
