What the deal with the AOKP rom? - Kindle Fire General

Im upgrading from a previous build of AOKP to the newest version on my kindle fire. Does this act as an upgrade or do I need a complete wipe?

The guys over at AOKP will always suggest that you do a full wipe before any install, that said, most times you can get away with not doing a full wipe, but if you run into any quirkyness or problems its probably a good idea to do a full wipe.
Also from what version are you upgrading?

Cyanogenmod 7 apps disappearing...

My phone, camera, and gallery apps are all missing as of right now. What is going on? Should I do a fresh install? Like wipe everything and flash a nightly? This was not happening until the first stable release 7.0.0.0
I would fresh wipe.
Always do with a major new release.

Having Problems Installing PA

So I just got this Tablet yesterday and noticed that PA was available for it. So after installing CWR, I tried installing, but was meet with a black screen. So I downloaded CM 10 and was meet with success. Was I doing something wrong? I think the problem was that I was going from 4.04 to 4.2, but I'm not sure.

I went from 4.0.4 straight to 4.2.x and my tablet booted up fine. I'm not exactly sure what could've caused that "black screen."
Not that it matters, but the current version of PA is running 4.1.2 (not a reason for black screen)
PA has not been updated to 4.2 for our tab yet

Did you wipe all data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache?
Did you have the right gapps?
PA is 4.12 for this tablet. Only current ROM for gtab2 that I have seen 4.2 or over is cm10.1
Try installing it again, double checking to make sure u followed the instructions to a t....
Your prob used to the devise by now I can imagine the first time u just missed a step.... Try redownloading pa as well, couldn't hurt....

[Q] Nexus 4 Update

Hello, I will get a Nexus 4 now in early May, but I came up with a question about updates. If i leave the phone with the stock rom, I'll lose my apps and settings to replace the future stock Android 5.0? And if you install the Latest build of Cm 10.1 when developed the custom rom Android 5.0, i will need to wipe and lose all? Thanks ;D (Sry for my bad english)
No if you update your phone from stock 4.2.2 to 5.0 you'll lose nothing. Everything stays as it is.
Yes, if you install any custom rom over a stock rom, you'll wipe and lose all. But all of your applications will be downloaded automatically from your gmail account and for like launcher settings or kernel settings you can backup all the info or you can use titanium backup app in order to backup everything.
So there is nothing to worry about.
Edit: By the way i am not really sure about the thing about going from 4.2.2 to 5.0. For minor updates like from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2 you lose nothing. But i don't really sure about 4.2.2 to 5.0.
Hmm i take that, but anyone can tell me if i install the Cyanogenmod 10.1 (4.2.1) When come the Cyanogenmod 5.0 (Assumption), the team of cyanogen make this update with no wipe necessary?

If it is a big update with many changes a full wipe must be done in order to get it working correctly. You can always easily restore user apps with Titanium Backup or adb.

It's recommended to do a full wipe to avoid problems if you're going to install a new rom. The developers will most likely have to wait a couple of weeks or so for Google to release the files for KLP for them to access and use. No rush. No rush. :good::laugh:

New User - Problem with Update after rooting

I'm sorry for having to post here, I'm a new XDA member and I've just started using my tablet and found out I can't post in the dev section. I'm not sure how else to get help and a previous boyfriend told me the xda-developers community was a great place so I thought I would try here.
I have the Nexus 7 (2013 edition) and I used WUG's method of rooting - everything went perfectly, but now I'm getting a notification that there is an update (an OTA update - I think that's what they are called?) and it doesn't apply. I'm not sure if I should have, but I did the bootloader unlock and installed a new recovery (TWRP - I think that's how it's spelled?. sorry again)...
Anyway.... At this point my tablet is working great, but I constantly see this notification for an update and I'm not sure what to do.. It says "touch to install" and I've done that but it just boots into my new recovery. If anybody has access to WUG in the dev forum, could you please ask him what I should do?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have the WiFi only version or the LTE version? Also, under your settings -> about phone, what build number are you currently on? Since you have rooted and installed a custom recovery, OTA updates will not install correctly. You have a couple of options in this regards, and I or someone will go over them once we figure out what version you are running.

Thanks for that:
Here's what you can do to install the update.
1) go to this thread and download either the odexed or deodexed version.
2) Reboot to recovery
3) Wipe Cache/Dalvik Cache
4) Flash the .zip file you just downloaded
5) Reboot your updated tablet.
OR
You can read here and try this.

Oh railed, thankyou so much - I was not sure if I would be able to get any more updates. If I do that, will it delete everything on my tablet? It did that when I did the change to an unlocked bootloader, and I had to reload everything.

All your data will be preserved. Only Wipe the Cache/Dalvik Cache, not the Data. Before you install go to Wipe -> Advance -> Check only Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Typically when an update comes out, someone will post a flashable update within a couple of hours so we can install them as well. Hope it helps.
Edit: As always before flashing anything, make a backup, by rebooting into recovery and selecting Backup (i check all the boxes).

Also.... If I just load the latest cyanogenmod on it, will that take care of it. I have the same old phone from my previous boyfriend and it's running cyanogenmod.. It will update the OS whenever a new version comes out and I don't lose the data like I did with the unlock bootloader thing?

I believe so, Cyanogenmod usually merges the updates pretty quickly into the code and you won't get any update notifications from Google directly any more. There are only nightly releases so far for this device if you feel like going that route.

Thank You! Very Much!!!
Do you think I should go the cyanogenmod route?
I've really liked cyanogenmod on the phone on barnes&noble device they are on, but I've been scared to update this tablet since we've broken up and I don't have anybody that can help.

That's completely up to you and what you prefer... I like the stock android experience so far, but there are many options out there for custom ROMs besides CM. Take a look here and here and figure out if a ROM in there has something you want... the great thing about this is if you don't like it, flash something else until you find exactly what you like... that's how I plan to do it, once the ROMs get more stable with the 4.3 updates.

I use deodexed, as do a lot of people who like to customize. There's not a lot of difference between the two. Here is an article that explains it pretty well: Odexed vs Deodexed

Thank You, I now know the difference between them. I think I'll go with the Deodexed version also.

[CM11] Stable to nightly

I have just installed my first ROM on my Nexus 4 being CyanogenMod 11 (the stable release).
The thing is, in "about phone" I only have "system updates". While a mate of mine has a lot of nightlies showing up there. For me it just shows a normal system update as it was on a normal unrooted phone.
----
My question is: is there a way to go from this stable release to a nightly release so that I'm able to keep updating to nightlies without erasing everything and configuring all over? (like just flash a nightly and it's fixed)
In other words, can I flash the latest nightly over my stable release and continue there without wiping anything?
Any advice is helpful!

Yes, just flash over it. (dirty flashing is what they call it) I would make a nandroid backup first, just in case.

Was kinda scared to do it because I read several contradicting statements.
So thank you for pushing me into that direction!
I did it and now not only the nightly is on there but also the option to update to newer nightlies. Thank you!

No problem. Just a side note, it's usually a good idea to wipe cache and dalvik before flashing the new nightly. Doing a backup also. That new nightly sometime breaks things.

I'll surely keep that in mind for the next time I'm updating to a newer release.
Because ye, thats the risk of sticking to nightlies though. But I've "broken" my nexus so many times that I'm sure I can handle it.
Just for this, after recovering the afternoon I had no intention of doing that again for this
