so everyone says about the customizabilitly of this phone well, now heres a another one a iron man themed paint job, so what do you guys think?
I can't say it looks good because it doesn't. Paint job near the camera isn't complete; the speaker is covered in paint. You can try to clear the holes with a toothpick.
And the plastic looks like wood now
But! I like the idea.
yeah, as i said its not finished those are just the base coats, gonna be cracking out the metallic red for the spray gun in the next few days and that should clear up the woody plastic
Heh i thought you made it like wood on purpose that would be a nice touch. The wood+gold hd2 would look classy once finished.
I liked it a lot

only the gold backcover looks good!
the red paint, how long will it last on the rubber?
well i had to strip back the rubber, as the top layer affected the paint and it caused it bubble up like nothing else, but i didnt mind as i was painting over it

Will you be posting some pics if you're done now? I'd love to see it finished, I think the concept's pretty good (although I have to say that in those images it doesn't look particularly good, sorry) and it should be nice with the metallic paint.
i'll definitly be posting pics when its done, just tryna find the time atm to even go out and get the airbrush kit and what not is a chore

Hi folks, in the past few weeks I slowly tried to pimp my Wizard and this is the outcome
First I took the whole think apart, then I sanded the paint and metall on the front cover off, and painted the whole thinkg as you can see black with car-paint . Yes, there are still a few things that didnt went that well, like on the back the breaking line between the part left free around the camera and the black surface around is not that clear, and I am affraid i took a little bit too much paint (in total around 6-7 layers). I guess this happend during the time the paint dryied. But all in all I think I did not a bad job...
And the Wizard only looks that great cause of zoki's fantastic ROM!
sure looks sweet!
Thanks for the tip, I Think I might do that to mine.
Thanks, if you have any questions, i would be happy to help .
niiiceeeee.. did you sand the thing before paint? there is a similar paint job.. i think it is called the 'white wizard'. very nice too
I think I'll paint mine a litle less bright, I mean your shade of black is like piano black. Maybe I'll paint it Black Dim.
Do I really need to sand it all?
How did you do it, cause mine's got some scratches and stuff...
Hyyy
WOW dude ur wizard is rocking
i wanna do that to mine but i have a couple of questions
can u explain step by step which screws and how to open up the wizard coz im a complete noob
also wat knda paint was it water based or oil based was it spray paint or brush painting and also everything else thanx man
again great foneeeee
one more hting i looked at the pictures and u have the power amera button etc silver but originally on mone they are black how did u get them to be like that
thanx again
for the manual... try here:
http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com/
yeah, i think it also looks great, althougth... nope, i like it
@xusso, and mony114
I thinks depends which parts you want to paint, i wanted to paint the whole Wizard black, exept the buttons, and the circle around the camera as you can see. execpt for those parts, i sanded all other parts.
The sanding was quite easy (althought took some time and patience) exept for the front cover of the cellphone, it is not paint but kind of a metal surface around 0.2 mm think but beneath it is also plastic. Yes, i also sanded this one, but this was a lot of trouble, cause some places of this part are thin and it is dangerous to break them. But i think this is defenitly worth to sand as well.
Around the screen, there is a real mettal grid, this one i didnt and i think you also shouldnt sand. (in my first attempt to paint the Wizard, i left this part out, but afterwards I look in my opinion not so good, so i also painted it).
For the sanding of the plastic parts, i took 220-sand paper, and for the metallic surface on the front cover, i first went with a 100-sand paper over it and finished it off with the 220.
When I finished sanding all the parts i wanted to paint, I put stich over all the places and buttons i didnt wanted to paint black. (altought they also got some paint, it was not so grave, cause with a hard plastic card or screwdriver you can screch (in genearl) the coulor off again).
For painting (spay paint!) I took 'Black Glossy Rallye-Lack'. When you paint it, do it out in the open and for christ sake, take some protecion to cover your mouth!!! I didnt and I can tell you, it is totally not worth no to do. Hours afterwards I still had the bitter taste of lack in my mouth. (not mentioning the healh-danger).
I painted around 5-6 (kind of thin) layers. After every layer wait long enough untill the paint is dry. (I waited around 1 hour). After the last layer I let the parts dry over night for the paint to fully get dry. (it is worth it, otherwise you end up with fingerprints or other nasty stuff sticking on the paint).
et voila when you put i back togheter again dont forget to connect the soundboxes on the side or the keyboard like I did otherwise you have to disassamble the Wizard again .
I hope my small instruction help you further, if u still have any questions i am glad to help...
ps.: can u also post some images when u are finished, I would like to see how others paint their Wizard...
That was a great tutorial, thanks again!
I'll post my pics when I'm done with mine...
Maybe I paint it ...Pink!
Sorry if there's already a "purple stains on my HD2" but I just ordered this one on ebay and apparently the guy's daughter kept a purple case on it.. this is the result.
I don't wanna screw it up trying to clean it with alcohol but does it look like this could come out? or has anyone else used cases that have caused this?
Just get yourself a nice black case and with time the purple might wear down. I would much rather do that than ruin the rubbery finish it has!? But then again..i guess the choice is yours..my guess would be that it was a case with a custom paint job because there is no reason why the finish should have been coming off.

Yeah, I suspect that color is probably actually "Beijing Pink"...classic mark (no pun intended) of a cheap paint job on a cheap case.
I haven't tried alcohol on this phone so I don't know if it'll affect the finish or not. Sometimes you can get that stuff to come up with a pencil eraser, but only in certain situations. Might be worth a try though.
If you can't take it off with an eraser you'll end up buying a cover. If you use alcohol and can't remove it or damage the finish you're still going to end up putting a cover.
I say you just try the alcohol route. If it doesn't come off then that's fine cuz you were going to slap cover on it anyways. I'd try a mr. clean magic eraser sponge, orange citrus cleaner stuff, goo-gone and alcohol being my last resort. Use Q Tips.
Looks like a bit of moisture got trapped between the phone and the case.
Knowing how tough red stains are to get out, in just about any environment, good luck is all I can say.
i had this same problem with a old nokia i had a blue case on it and it somehow stained the battery cover blue . i tried everything to get it off but i was desperate and said hey let me try some black magic spray on tire shine .left it on there for about five min and it wiped off like butter lol also works good for stickers on car bumpers let me know if this helps .

Yes it was :/ the seller sent it with the pink/purple case, looks like it was spray painted (very poorly too). I do have a black rubber case that came with my first one, but i can't see it helping anytime soon..

yeah ill give that a try lol seems safe enough. (and the purple seems to be "soaked' into the finish ..at least thats what it looks like..) thanks!

The eraser didn't seem to work :/ , haven't tried the alcohol yet but I was wonderin if any of you knew about using acetone, nail polish remover, or gunkOff as far as embeded spray paint removal? (like which route is the safest)

I agree it looks a bit bigger in white, but it is very sexy... nice work!
Looks Good, but its not for me
Great!!!.., even better than the iphone in white ^^
MY GOOSH THAT LOOKS SEXY!!! LOL my gf would flip if she heard me referring to a phone like that haha
Very tidy mate makes it stand out from the rest. What did you use to prime it and what type of paint?
Dude that looks pretty sick!! what materials did you use?
Wow. Either you're really good at taping off or you're very patient with taking apart the phone!
http://pocketnow.com/hardware-1/official-htc-hd2-disassembly-assembly-training-videos-leaked
That's a tear down video for the HD2. I just don't know if I have that kind of patience
Yeah it took very long to disassemble the phone because i was very scared to crack the screen.
Then i sanded the whole case, applied spray paint primer and then white paint. It took the whole day because i applied 4 layers of paint.
But you are right, its a bit to white, so i'll apply some black graphics so.
And thanks for your comments.

Did you disassemble the whole back of the phone (removing the audio module and camera etc) or did you only paint the outside?
wow. it looks incredibly good!
Paint the design you want ASAP! the battery cover looks too white haha
some more eye candy
I saw before one brother here posted his HTC Leo, he applied a car vinyl sticker on his battery cover with carbon fiber design. It was quite impressive also.
..
some experiments with paint.net
i´m sure one of you can do that much better. because i´m an absolute n00b in graphics
ohh, carbon fiber is a very good idea, it could look pretty good with the whit case

i agree..i think i'm gonna scrap and paint my phone rite now!
Have you (or anyone else) tried using vinyl dye instead of spray paint?
Spent some time on adding the white carbon fiber vinyl to my battery cover and scratching the black rubber paint from the trim. Enjoy.
I still have to sand down the trim, I might paint it a bit darker red to match the color under the kick stand then add a layer of clear coat on it.
Looks good, though not a fan of a completely white back. but it does look good nonetheless.
love the trim
Looks pink.

which is part of the reason I might re-paint it darker to match the color that is beneath the kickstand. In person tho it doesn't look pink.
dang mite have to swipe ur idea. looks pretty darn good. since mine has a few chips on the corners.

Takes a while to do this so i know the pain it is. Not a fan of the white though, this does add a lot of character to the phone. I have done this with the black phone. The white makes the red look much lighter where the black appears to be darker and it looks much better to me, personally.
Wow, that looks really cool. I've always wanted to do something cool like that to my phone, I've never felt confident enough though.
Edit: meant to quote. That's directed at both the OP and the poster above me.

what grit sand paper did you use? i was thinking something like 220 or higher so not to leave sanding marks. again i must say those phones look pretty dang fresh

When I sanded mine I used 400 to strip off the rubber, and then used 1000 followed by 1500 to get it nice smooth and shiny.
what type of overlays are people using? I was loooking at DiNoc from 3M, but also am tossing around the idea of using real CF fabric and resin... then after it cures i could just use a drill to drill out the stock holes and such...
I'll probably order a pre-made black one (you get another battery cover with it) from this guy here
http://evo.carbonfibermagic.com/Home.html
He's where I got the idea from. I still have yet to sand my trim down but i'll update the pics when I do.
I don't know if this fits in the general thread here, if so mods can move or delete it.
A while ago my GSII felt on the floor and the chrome trim was a bit damaged. Nothing serious, just in one corner the chrome layer chipped off.
Because i'm planning to buy a new phone soon i thought like: nothing to loose lets try to remove the chrome trimming.
So what i did was sanding the chrome off and that went easely and smooth. But dismantle the glass from the frame is almost a no go, and so it was not easy to remove the chrome between screen and the border around the screen.
I used more rough sand paper and removed the the whole border that was sticking out above the screen.
Used 3 types of sandpaper from rough to end with sandpaper 400 to give it a matt finished look.
Here are some pics where you can see that the border is more flush with the screen and not rounded anymore like original.
I actually like that
And wow, you must have some bal, erm, i mean patience
That's cool. It's like having a new phone
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
You would be surprised how easely the chrome comes off. from the damaged corner you can easely chip it of with your nail. Only because the chrome is smooth and slick you think its hard to get it removed.
Getting the chrome of is just a matter of minutes, then you stick some tape on the glass and start sanding with the rough sand paper. Its reallly soft plastic and with the sandpaper 400 it gets smooth in no time.
@ ephraim033, yes it looks like an other phone, the dark border blends with the dark screen and the rounded edge makes the screen more borderless.
I was surprised too with this small mod that phone looked different.
Maybe you can reconsider selling it. After all, it looks nice. Anyway, I'm not worried with mine since the boarder or my phone is black and not silver. I was jealous of the silver part last year but got used to the black one since when it gets damage, no paint will fall off (even if it will, it might not be that noticeable compared to the silver one) .

looks kind of iPhoney.... in a good way
Nicely done.

Wow that's look nice.
I'm planning to do that too; since my chrome scratch by a key but I'm paranoid that I might damage my phone. (I'm really bad at handicraft lol)
After look at this I might doing this too.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Its really not difficult. Or you tape the bottom part or you remove your top part(screen and bezel). Of course you tape your screen too. I made first a plastic template of the rounded corners and each time I did put a tape on that template to get a perfect matching tape to stick in the corners.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Just don't mine... I sanded all my phone with some fine sand paper.. no more chrome just a smooth matt black finish.. love it

Thank you for posting this idea. 3 of my corners were banged up and I always hated the fake chrome look. I've been sanding a bit here and there and almost have it looking perfect, so much better. I love the more "rubbery" feeling I get when I hold it.

Your welcome, As long the chrome trim is in mint condition then the phone looks ok, but like you said the chrome trim is actually looking very cheap.
When you keep your phone in bright light you could even see that the chrome wasn't even smooth.
I didn't drop my phone on purpose but i'm happy the way it looks now.
