Clockworkmod vs 4ext recovery? - Desire HD General

I recently heard of 4ext recovery and I wonder how it stands to clockworkmod recovery?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD

I think 4EXT Touch Recovery works better than ClorkWork. Even ROM such as Android Revolution HD included 4EXT Touch as a stock recovery.

Yeah I like that it checks the md5 checksum before flash and a lot more.

4ext

I use Clockwork for every single Rom i've ever used.....as for Md5 etc.....i ain't got a clue what it is or never been interested....i simply download whatever Rom I like, whack it on SD card, wipe davlik, battery stats...factory reset and cache partition etc etc....then go into clockwork and instal from there.
Never had a problem and prob flashed 100+ Roms to my desire...lol.

The scripts that you find will do it for you. I prefer doing it manually. I use 4ext touch.

4ext is built on Clockworkmod and adds a lot of extra and awesome features. Everything you can think of and more. Madmaxx82 has done a great job with it. If your device is included in the list of 4ext supported devices, then install it. It's much better than CWM. Especially the touch recovery. CWM backups are fully compatible with 4ext and vice versa (unless you enable tar backups). Md5sum check is important to prevent flashing a corrupted backup. Just this morning as backup of mine was messed up because of a filesystem error on my SD card.
mike1986's super wipe wipes boot, system, data, cache, and .android secure. 4ext recovery has a built in super wipe function to choose before flashing a ROM.

4ext has a lot more features than clock work mod like ext4 converter etc but i dont know for me both work similar

4ext ,the best

When I rooted by DHD, it installed CWM. So I flashed my first ROM with CWM (ARHD 6.3.3). It did not install the O/C Deamon, since I did not realize I needed Ext4 to get it working. ARHD installs Ext4 if you don't have it, so I re-flashed ARHD 6.3.3 this time with Ext4. It is amazing how much easier it is to use (touch interface), and builds in all the tools you will need for a safe recovery (MD5 and log file basically).
There is a free Ext4 updater and I updated my Ext4 to the latest version. You can even get Ext4 control in the market which allows you to start the process from the phone UI. Small thing like reboot into recovery from Sense, rather than power down and power up with volume down, make it much nicer to use.
Ext4 hands down.

so why user take a lot of feautures, when he wants only to flash rom ? please, give a link with ext4 recovery feautures.

My volume-buttons told me that 4ext is a livesaver :good:

Noob question, but if I install 4ext can I still use ROM Manager? (automates everything, makes life a while lot easier)
EDIT:
Another stupid question but what's the difference between an aroma install and a normal one?

[Q] Restoring my mt4g

I think I am in the same boat as the OP.
I rooted the Mt4g, backed up stock Sense Froyo with Clockworkmod 3, then installed Cyanogenmod 7 with Clockworkmod 3.
I want to revert back to the stock Sense Froyo. I simply did a restore in Clockworkmod 3 to my Sense Froyo backup, and now all it shows is the white Mt4g screen.
Will clearing the cache and data before restoring the Sense Froyo be my fix too?
Thanks. OP, didnt mean to take over your thread but I think we are having the same issue so didnt want to make another thread.
The version of ClockworkMod Recovery you are using MATTERS. It MATTERS VERY MUCH.
Froyo based ROMs, including Stock and Iced Glacier, must be backed up, restored, and installed with CWMR Version 2. Gingerbread based ROMs such as CM7 must be backed up, restored, and installed with CWMR Version 3.
A higher number does not mean better. There are filesystem differences between Froyo and Gingerbread that require the correct tools.
There is a custom version of CWMR for the MT4G that can handle both types of filesystems (assuming you haven't already used the wrong tools) -- it is called version "3.0.0.6" -- you can look for it on the Development Sub Forum.
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I did not know that information at the time when I created the restore file.
When restoring with Clockworkmod 3 failed, I flashed Clockworkmod 2 and restored the recovery made by 3 using 2. Its working so far... It did show one or two errors when I restored.

So i'm new to all of this.
I don't want to make the wrong move.
I've got CWMR v3.0.0.5
Just to be clear. I go into CWMR. Do i wipe cache partition, then wipe dalvik cache, wipe data.. then restore again? or reboot system now?
OR do I need to flash CWMR 2 or 3.0.0.6? If so. How do i do that without going through rom manager? I'm noob.
Thanks!

That is incompatible with Iced Glacier. You can't use 3.0.0.5 with Iced Glacier, or with the Stock ROM. Ever.
In addition, clearing /cache and /data and the Dalvik cache (which is inside of the /data partition, so won't actually do anything if /data is also reformatted) will not solve your problem. Because ....
The partition with the problem is /system -- which is where the ROM lives. That partition is now in EXT4 format, which a Froyo-based ROM cannot access. The Froyo kernel boots (from the /boot partition) and gets errors when it looks in /system.... and reboots. Hence, your boot loop.
Your easiest fix would be to install CM7 so that you have a functional Android OS on your phone. THEN ..... after getting CM7 running, flash a version 2 image of CWMR from ROM Manager (included in CM7), then boot it, and install Iced Glacier.

Sounds like that's the course of action. Any threads leading to how to install CM7 in my situation? I'm watching youtube videos on different things trying to learn the best option. But I don't really want to trust tho
From Recovery 3.0.0.5, mount your SD card for use with USB (in the mounts and storage menu) and transfer a CM7 .zip to the card. Get it from http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=glacier
Factory wipe / System Reset from the main menu of Recovery, and install the .zip as you did Iced Glacier.
----
CM7 does not include Google Apps. If you were intending to actually =use= the ROM instead of using it temporarily as part of a rescue process, you will likely want them. The .zip can be found at http://android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/gapps/gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip -- install from Recovery after installing CM7.
----
Boot CM7. You'll find ROM Manager in the App drawer. Use it to Flash a version 2.x CWM Recovery -- look under "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" at the bottom of the ROM Manager main screen.
Long press the power button. Select Reboot. CM7 will prompt you for what kind of boot. Select Recovery.
Do another full wipe/factory reset. Install Iced Glacier .zip as you did previously, and reboot.

So the second zip is only if I want to keep the CM7 ROM? If I do, then I use that zip to get Google Apps?
Also, before I look under "All ClockworkMod recoveries" will I have to install CWM recovery 3.0.0.6 or 2.x first?
In that case. I'll do some research on CM7 too. Idk if iced glacier is better or CM7. Maybe it just depends on preference?

3.0.0.6 could be used instead of a 2.x version. But it requires its own manual install. Based on the questions in this thread, I'm not recommending CWM Recovery 3.0.0.6 at this point, as you folks do not have a functioning Android system and would have to modify the 3.0.0.6 install procedures. There's only so much knowledge a person can absorb at once. Get your phones working, first.

It is =entirely= a matter of personal preference. There are plenty of people who prefer one over the other. There are also those who prefer neither, and are using yet again another ROM. Poke around in the forum threads here to get a feel for what people think.

sweet. So i'll go with the 2.x version then. In that case, I won't have to install it? it'll just be there?
I'm not at home so I can't try any of it out yet. Just trying to learn as much as i can first
ROM Manager should be able to pull the image from the Internet. CM7, even without Google Apps, should automagically connect your phone and its number and its data plane to T-Mobile's network.
zomg. this is sweet. Thanks for all your help!!! I'm gonna keep CM7 for now. I installed the google app zip. Any suggestions on where to start exploring? The main thing that i wanted to root my phone for was to take screenshots. threads? Bah. so much to explore!
So if on 3.0.0.6 and wanting to go from CM7 to IG, you recommend going into "all clockworkmod recoveries", switching over to a 2.0 version (does it matter which?), and then doing backup, wipe, install?
No. 3.0.0.6 is a unique, one-off version that supports both ext3 and ext4 file systems, and deals correctly with both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs.
If you were on 3.0.0.5, and wished to install a Froyo ROM, you would back up first, before flashing a 2.x Recovery. Think about it.

Hoe do I remove the encryption?

I encrypted my tf101 and it works great...
I didnt it because I am testing apps for work and I deal with sensitive info..
now I want to remove it and before you say reflash it that doesnt work..
I can reflash and the encryption stays which is nice to know...
Says in the encryption menu the only way to undo it is to factory reset.
Anyone figure out how to do this with a custom recovery installed? I tried from the settings menu but it failed due to cwm installed. In cwm I am unable to mount and format /data.
Do we need to install the stock recovery? I'd hate to have to do that just to remove the encryption.
TIA
If you go to the HD Revolution thread in development you can download 'full wipe' with formats the encrypted partition. You should then be able to install a stock rom from recovery. Please be careful and have search as there are other threads on this with more detailed info than I have.
This method did work for me.

If you're going to use Super wipe script. Make sure you have a recovery that read from the micro sd card or ADB is working. If not you'll find a wiped tf with nothing to flash.

Of course that doesn't work if you have a SBK2 (B80 or higher) system.

I just realized that CWM has a problem on Nexus 7. Can't delete old backups!! You can't delete files in the CWM backup folder thru file explorer, terminal with SU or ADB. For that, and so many other performance reasons, I dropped CWM faster than drunk girl in stilettos. TWRP is what I use on my Galaxy S2 and I just love it. You can queue up several zips for install in order, like: 1) TDJ cache wipe, 2) install ROM, 3) install Gapps, 4) TDJ cache wipe again. then, come back 2 minutes later, and you're ready to reboot. ALso, TWRP has a file manager in recovery, so you can actually delete those annoying backup folders that CWM won't even let you delete. TWRP FTW.
I also notice that TWRP has the nice backup options for "System/Boot/Data" backup only. So I can clean backup my rom without all those apps(which is HUGE)
guess I'll need to put back TWRP in my Nexus 7 again.
TWRP. I tried the latest CWM but even the touch version is not that good for me. Also the De duplication backup of CWM is just not quite right in my opinion. In my experience, leaving thousand files in the sd card is causing performance problems compared to just few large files.

If I flash Clockworkmod Recovery in Rom Manager and then Reboot into Recovery from Rom Manager, I go right to cwm recovery. I have tested making and deleting nandroid backups there and it works just fine. My backups consist of a folder containing 5 files including an md5 checksum so I don't know what people are talking about with 'thousands of files'. I think the people criticizing CWM don't know how to use it. I just make sure I flash Clockworkmod Recovery in Rom Manager before I Reboot into Recovery. Works every time. I don't use the Touch version, just plain old Rom Manager v5.0.2.1 and CWM 6.0.1.0.
I had installed CWM first, but now I changed to TWRP and I like it much more. With an USB-stick connected you have the possibility to backup / restore ROMs from there directly, which makes much more sense than backing up to internal memory. Also the other options provided for install / backup / restore are well done. Really nice work!

Help me understand alternative recovery twrp an 4ext

I can't seem to get twrp or 4ext recovery to work I understand that they are flashable I've tried just to lose cwm will someone explain this to me thank in advance
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda app-developers app
i did it this way...
i got the 4ext recovery, took the .img file, named it recovery-raw.img
installed the nand toolkit, dropped the recovery-raw.img file in
E:\HD2 nand Toolkit\data\ref
overwriting the one that's already there, and now, so long as i choose 'custom' when selecting a system partition size in the nand toolkit, it uses the 4ext recovery.
Alternatively, I'm pretty sure its flashable as a zip, just like a rom, meaning you enter cwm as normal, choose install zip from sd, select the recovery .zip (which you already moved to the sd card), and voilà, next time you boot and enter cwm, it will be 4ext recovery, and your current rom hasn't been touched. HOWEVER, , I've got a feeling the 4ext recovery .img may be bigger than the standard one, so your recovery partition may not be big enough, meaning a full wipe anyway, , but I'm not certain of that.
Don't know anything about twrp.
How do I over rite the image file how much partition size for flashing every time I flash it deleted cwm thanks the reply your the first one that's even tried
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda app-developers app
Also what do I do in custom partition size when installing 4ext
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda app-developers app
The size you choose drowns on what rom you want to flash. It will tell you in post1 of any rom thread what size it needs.
So, say it needs a 160mb system partition,, you enter magldr, chose USB flasher, run the toolkit (which you modified by changing the recovery-raw.img file) on the left, in the column of numbers, choose ’custom’ then click re partition, ,a box comes up asking what size, type160 and OK.
Okay I think I understand the partition sizing...I tried to change the image file in the tookit I don't think I was doing it right I don't know how to overwrite so I renamed the image file like you said removed the one in toolkit an moved the one I renamed back to toolkit is that right or is there something I did wrong I ran the daf. File it didn't work so I'm assuming at the risk of making an ass out of us...that I didn't do it rite
Edit: I got it i noticed that the .img wasn't in hd toolkits file name thank you, thank you, thank you it worked i wonder if you flash twrp they same way thanks again
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda app-developers app
I'm so grateful for this if it works (I'm going to try it when I get in from work)
I've been looking everywhere for someone just to explain how to get this on my HD2. So far this is the only place I've seen it explained.
Installing the 4Ext zip doesn't seem to work via CWM recovery and just wipes out CWM recovery so you have to reinstall that.
Sometimes people on here have a really problem with explaining things, especially if they already know and think you're being dumb for asking and wasting their time. Thanks again for taking time to explain.

the other way is to get the cwm that is installed by daf.exe, and swap out the recovery.img file for the 4ext one. The flash.cfg will take care of the partition size. Thats all my workaround in the toolkit is doing.
